Bank is offering a $300 reward for information leading to the conviction of the responsible parties. Gatlinburg police are investigating a break-in at GatlinburgPittman High School, and the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office is looking into another at Seymour High School. Both involve ATMs supplied to the schools by Tennessee State Bank. In both cases, sources say it appears the perpetrators broke into the schools and then into the ATMs

and took an undisclosed about of money. The burglary at GatlinburgPittman High School apparently happened March 14, while the break-in at Seymour apparently occurred later last month. Video surveillance from Gatlinburg-Pittman High School shows two people breaking into the school and taking cash from the machines, but the perpetrators covered their faces, Gatlinburg Detective Rodney Burns said. The perpetrators appear to be

male, Burns said, but the surveillance footage didn’t offer any additional information as to their identity. A spokesperson for Tennessee State Bank said the bank began offering ATMs at county schools in February of 2010. Burns can be reached at 4361435 or 436-4212. Detective John Brown is handling the case for the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office; he can be reached at 428-1899. n jfarrell@themountainpress.com

SEVIERVILLE — The broken record had another skip Monday and, once again — the foreclosure auction of Dennis Bolze’s massive estate on Campbell Lead Road in Gatlinburg was delayed. The move, announced by Regions Bank trustee Walt Winchester, was expected as court hearings on who should get the proceeds from the sale are still pending. The new date set is May 3, though whether the sale actually goes ahead then will again depend on the status of the legal proceedings. It has now been nearly a year since Winchester started trying to sell the home on behalf of Regions, which is one of several lienholders on the home who claim a total debt more than $5 million. Though several interested parties showed up the first time the house was set to hit the auction block, since then Winchester’s monthly ritual at the Sevier County Courthouse has been to stand alone at the top of the east side steps, reading aloud to no one that the sale has been postponed. Though the practice is required by law, Winchester has admitSee BOLZE, Page A4

GATLINBURG — ILM Rentals L.P. plans to build a $3 million parking facility at 120 Historic Nature Trail. Currently, the site is home to Shade Tree parking lot. The site sits adjacent to the Gatlinburg Convention Center. ILM currently operates several other surface lots in addition to the Bearskin Parking Garage, a 535-space facility located next to TGI Friday’s on the Parkway. The new garage facility will house over 300 spaces on three levels, tripling the existing space of Shade Tree lot. Jim Ogle, managing partner of ILM, noted the strong demand for parking at the location and the need for a garage facility, “Shade Tree is perhaps our best parking facility in terms of revenue per space, and we’ve had plans to do this for quite a while. We’ve just been waiting on the right opportunity and timing.” Ogle said. “Given the slow recovery of the construction market, we feel like it is a great time to get competitive pricing on the prefabricated concrete decking.” Construction is set to begin in the fall.

State tea party activists split on GOP relations By ERIK SCHELZIG Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Hundreds of young people spilled into midtown Manhattan near Times Square early Monday, brawling and shooting guns after the New York International Auto Show in an annual night of mayhem the mayor called “wilding.” Four people were shot and 33 were arrested, mostly on charges of disorderly conduct on the streets not far from the Jacob A. Javits Center, where the auto show is held. Three men and a woman were arrested later Monday on gang assault charges related to one of the shootings, police said. It wasn’t clear whether anyone who fired shots was among those arrested. Another 23 were issued summons for disorderly conduct or were given juvenile reports and released. It’s not clear why the annual event often leads to violence in neighboring areas, but the police department had additional officers on patrol because of problems during past shows dating to 2003, chief spokesman Paul J. Browne said. Last year,

Priest accused of U.S. abuse still working in India ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A Roman Catholic priest was in his native India in 2007 when he was charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl at his former post in Minnesota. His bishop said Jeyapaul handles paperwork for schools in the diocese office and does not work with children. “We cannot simply throw out the priest, so he is just staying in the bishop’s house, and he is helping me

Bank officials argue the liens must be cleared and maintains the home will likely sell for less than the $5.1 million Bolze’s creditors claim on it. That means, they insist, the financial institution and the other lienholders should get all the proceeds off the auction. Bolze has been held in

a Blount County jail since he was picked up by local and federal authorities in Jersey Shores, Pa., in March 2009. Though he initially pleaded innocent to the six felony wire fraud and money laundering charges against him, Bolze has since admitted he ran a fraudulent investment scheme out of the Campbell Lead Road home. Bolze was scheduled to learn his fate at a sentencing hearing previously set for April 15 but, like the house auction, that has been delayed. The new date for the proceeding announced last week is May 19 in U.S. District Court in Knoxville. n dhodges@themountainpress.com

seized on the case as another example of what they said is a practice of protecting child-molesting priests from the law. Jeyapaul was one of many foreign priests brought to help fill shortages in U.S. parishes. Last year, about one-quarter of the newly ordained priests in the United States were foreign-born, according to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University. Jeyapaul, 55, came to Minnesota in 2004 and was assigned to work at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Greenbush, a town of fewer than 1,000 people just south of the Canadian border. nearby Times Square, where an armed street hustler was shot dead by police after exchanging gunfire on the street in December. “You know it’s the cost of doing business,” said Angus McIndoe, owner of the restaurant bearing his name next to Broadway theaters. “It’s not the first time there has been nutty activity in Times Square.” Auto show spokesman Chris Sams said no one stood

out as suspicious Sunday at the show, which runs until April 11 and attracts more than 1 million people. “We had an amazing crowd, a very family-oriented crowd. The type of person who makes an auto show great, people listening to the presenters,” he said. Security at the show is tight, and officials work with police, Sams said. Visitors are checked when they arrive. Most of the people arrested were men in their 20s from boroughs other than Manhattan. At least two were known gang members, Browne said; the four people arrested on gang assault charges — three men ages 17 to 23 and a teenage girl — were not believed to have fired any shots, police said. Mayor Michael Bloomberg described the night’s events as “wilding,” using a word created by the media during the notorious 1989 rape of the woman known as the Central Park jogger. Five men were charged with gang-raping her, but their convictions were thrown out in 2002.

MEMPHIS — The tea party movement in Tennessee is a mosaic, and some pieces of the picture aren’t fitting together comfortably. Some seek close ties to Republicans, others want to foster independence. Some are skeptical of moneymaking ventures tied to the movement, while others endorse the capitalism. Competing groups in the Memphis area, the Mid-South Tea Party and the Memphis Tea Party, illustrate the diverging interests among activists groups around the state. “We don’t want to become ’Teapublicans,”’ said Mark Herr of Memphis, an activist with the Mid-South Tea Party. “Our objective is not the party’s; their responsibility is to find candidates and get them elected,” said Herr, 40, an Air Force retiree who considers himself a political independent. “The purpose of the tea party is to create a well-informed electorate.” The Mid-South Tea Party was formed after its founders felt the original Memphis Tea Party group was taken over by radio talk show host Mark Skoda, who later gained national attention as the spokesman for a high-priced national tea party convention in Nashville that featured a speech from Sarah Palin. Grass roots activists criticized the hefty cost to attend and organizer Judson Phillips’ leadership of the Tea Party Nation, which he has designated as a for-profit organization. Phillips in an interview was critical of tea party activists who want to shy away from the Republican Party. “If they want to sit there and be outside of the party, they can do that,” he said. “But all that means is they’re going to be sitting on the side of the road, holding their signs, wondering why nothing is happening to change the country.” The Nashville convention has led to a lawsuit against Phillips by a businessman and Republican Party supporter who claims he was libeled after helping cover a deposit on Palin’s $100,000 speaking fee. Phillips has said the lawsuit was meritless and “hurts the movement.” Over breakfast recently at a family restaurant in Germantown, members of the Mid-South Tea Party were dismissive of Phillips’ group, along with the affiliated one run by Skoda, for what they say are too-close relations with the GOP. “When we see someone that is attempting to turn the tea party movement into their own little moneymaker, that’s a red flag for us,” said Carmon Heilmann, 50, of Germantown.

6 dead, 21 missing in West Virginia coal mine blast MONTCOAL, W.Va. (AP) — Six miners were killed and at least 21 unaccounted for Monday in an explosion at an underground coal mine, the state mining director said. Ron Wooten said the blast was reported around 3 p.m. at Massey Energy Co.’s Upper Big Branch mine in Raleigh County, about 30 miles south of Charleston. The company did not provide details on the extent of the damage or if other miners had been rescued. A Boone County ambulance dispatcher also said he has the same number of fatalities and missing miners. One injured miner is in intensive care at Charleston Area Medical Center, spokeswoman Elizabeth Pellegrin said.

“We are preparing for other patients,” she said. Five highly trained mine rescue teams from Conso Energy and Massey were on the scene as well as part of the state Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training team, MSHA spokeswoman Amy Louviere said. The mine is operated by Massey subsidiary Performance Coal Co. It has caches of extra oxygen along emergency escape routes and airtight refuge chambers designed to provide enough air to keep miners alive for four days if they can’t make their way out, according to Randy Harris, an engineering consultant who oversees installation of hightech gear. The large mine produced 1.2

million tons of coal in 2009, according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and has about 200 employees, most of whom work underground. They would not have all been working the same shift. Gov. Joe Manchin was out of town, but working to get back, according to his office. Chief of Staff Jim Spears was headed to the mine. At least three fatalities have happened at the mine in the past dozen years. In 1998, a worker was killed when a support beam collapsed, dumping bags of cement mix and other materials onto the man, according to a report from the federal Mine Safety & Health Administration. Federal investigators blamed poor welding and

construction. In 2001, another worker at the mine died after a portion of roof fell in on him, and an electrician died after being electrocuted while repairing a shuttle car there in 2003. Massey Energy is a publicly traded company based in Richmond, Va., that has 2.2 billion tons of coal reserves in southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, southwest Virginia and Tennessee, according to the company’s Web site. Massey ranks among the nation’s top five coal producers and is among the industry’s most profitable. It has a spotty safety record. The federal mine safety administration fined Massey a then-record $1.5 million for 25

violations that inspectors concluded contributed to the deaths of two miners trapped in a fire in January 2006. The company later settled a lawsuit naming it, several subsidiaries and Chief Executive Don Blankenship as defendants. Aracoma Coal Co. later paid $2.5 million in fines after the company pleaded guilty to 10 criminal charges in the fire. The United Mine Workers labor union said it has personnel nearby and would help non-union Massey if the company asks. The UMW said it also is ready to help families of workers at the mine. Massey is virulently non-union and CEO Blankenship’s television set with a UMW fired bullet in it still sits in his office.

the most amazing rescues in the history of mining anywhere,” said David Feickert, a coal mine safety adviser to the Chinese government. Some miners told rescuers of eating tree bark and drinking the filthy water to survive. Some had strapped themselves to the shafts’ walls with their belts — or similarly suspended themselves using their clothes — to avoid drowning while they slept. Some climbed into a mining cart that floated by. One miner “showed us the sawdust from his pocket. He told me it was hard to chew,” the leader of one of the rescue teams, Chen Yongsheng, told reporters. Chen gave the most detailed, firsthand account of the rescue efforts and his thrill at reaching the miners. When the rafts got stuck in the narrow shaft, Chen said his team floated bags of a nutrient solution down the tunnel to provide sustenance for the trapped miners. Work crews had been racing to pump out the flooded

mine since March 28, when workers digging a tunnel for the new mine accidentally breached an old shaft filled with water. A graphic on state TV showed water inundating the V-shaped tunnel, blocking miners who were on higher ground but deeper inside the shaft from escaping. Rescuers had no signs the miners were alive until April 2, when tapping sounds from deep underground were heard on a metal pipe lowered into the shaft. They sent milk, glucose and letters of encouragement down the pipe to sustain the miners. But the high murky waters turned back rescuers Saturday, seemingly until more pumping would clear enough space to use the inflatable rafts. The rescue teams spotted lights from miners’ headlamps swaying in the tunnel. Then one by one, the first survivors were floated by raft toward the mine entrance early Monday, where medical teams waited by the water’s edge.

“They could answer questions and use simple speech,” said Dr. Qin Zhongyang, who checked the men as they were lifted from the rafts. “When I saw the first survivor, I felt so happy.” Within hours, the trickle turned into a wave of rescues. Dozens of miners emerged, put on stretchers — their bodies wrapped in blankets and their eyes covered to shield them from the light — and carried to waiting ambulances. One miner clapped and reached his blackened hands to grasp those of his rescuers on either side of the stretcher. “This morning, we wished for a miracle to happen again,” said Liu Dezheng, a spokesman for the rescue operation. “Six hours later, miracles have really happened.” Liu Qiang, leader of the rescue effort’s medical team, described the rescued miners as weak, dehydrated, malnourished and with unstable vital signs.

XIANGNING, China (AP) — Rescuers paddled the rafts with their hands in the dark, flooded mine shaft, letting out air so the inflatable vessels could squeeze through tight passages. From deep in the tunnel came the call: “Can you get me out of here?” Replied a rescuer: “Since we got in, we will definitely be able to take you out of here.” And they did, pulling 115 miners to safety Monday, their eighth day trapped in the northern China mine. Emergency teams were trying to reach 38 others still in the Wangjialing mine as of Monday night. Even so, the rescue was a rare piece of good news for a coal-mining industry that is notoriously the world’s deadliest. Chinese officials called it “a miracle.” State TV repeatedly broadcast images of cheering and crying rescuers — a cathartic moment for the country observing “grave-sweeping day,” a traditional time for remembering the dead. “This is probably one of

Haslam’s new ad gets limited play By ERIK SCHELZIG Associated Press Writer NASHVILLE — RepublicanKnoxvilleMayor Bill Haslam’s first television ad of the Tennessee governor’s race made a big splash, but also drew some criticism. His second effort is far more modest. The 30-second spot touting Haslam’s devotion to his family and Bible study is only running on Fox News through the middle of this month, according to public records maintained by Comcast Spotlight.

Haslam is spending about $9,500 in the Nashville market to run the ad 58 times. His total expenditure to run the ad in the state’s four largest cities is about $23,000. By contrast, Haslam spent about $140,000 to run the previous ad on a variety of cable channels and far more to run it on broadcast television during the Winter Olympics. The first ad trumpeted Haslam’s professional background with the family-owned Pilot Corp. But his claim to have created

The Leaf-Chronicle quoted Fire Marshal Ray Williams who said the blaze broke out Saturday night in the toilet paper aisle where there was no obvious ignition source. Dennis Hopper

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge says Dennis Hopper’s estranged wife and daughter will be allowed to live on the actor’s property while the couple engage in a bitter divorce. A judge alsoordered the ailing actor-director to pay $12,000 a Hopper month in spousal and child support costs. The 73-year-old is battling prostate cancer and his attorney repeatedly described him during a hearing Monday as being “desperately ill.” The “Easy Rider” star did not attend the hearing, but his estranged wife, Victoria, and his adult children were present. Judge Amy Pellman sternly admonished them to try to work together to ease the impact of Hopper’s likely death on the couple’s 7-year-old daughter.

The media are now asking whether Pope Benedict ought to have defrocked a Wisconsin priest accused of molesting a minor in the 1950s, a case which the police declined to prosecute in the 1970s and was brought to the Vatican’s attention only as the priest lay dying in the 1990s. Well, it’s a fair question. But what about the rest of us? Defrocking a priest will purify the Church (and we owe thanks to all those who have helped make this happen). But taking off the Roman collar will not prevent the man from abusing children. Only the law can do that. How serious is the law about sexual abuse of children and teens? I spent an afternoon trying to find out. I found out, for example, that according to a 2006 study by the Florida Office of Economic and Demographic Research, the majority of adults over the age of 24 who had sex with a minor over the age of 15 escaped jail. In fact, almost one out of six adults convicted of sexually battering a child under 12 received no prison sentence at all. The media have also rightfully focused some attention on a San Diego man, John Gardner III, who raped and murdered a teen girl after serving just five years for molesting a 13-year-old neighbor girl in 2000. But that is just one of many similar cases hitting Google News in recent weeks. For example: In North Carolina, Christopher Oden hosted a party for his teenage son that turned into a drunken orgy with the father filming teen girls having sex with each other and then having sex with at least one of them himself. He had multiple rape and domestic violence allegations in his file (although no convictions). He was sentenced to time served and three years probation. In Auburn, N.Y., Maxwell Coapman was arrested for assaulting a 13-year-old. In 1990, Coapman was convicted of rape for molesting an 11-year-old. Yet by 1994 he was a free man. A Loveland, Colo., 30-year-old named Jason McCarty was charged in March with three counts of molesting a toddler -- abuse that occurred while he was living with the child’s family in 2007. In 2007, McCarty was also arrested and charged with multiple counts of Internet exploitation of a child. His harsh sentence? Five years probation, which left him free to continue his sexual assaults on an infant. For a little variety consider the case of Mark Genetiano, a 26-year-old male nursing assistant, who was convicted of sexually assaulting four elderly women patients. His sentence? Just one year, with six months off for time served. He’ll be out in June. Jeff Anderson, the trial lawyer leading the current charge against Pope Benedict, is an interesting man. As of 2002, he said he had earned at least $60 million personally from this litigation. He told The Associated Press this week that his adult daughter had been molested as a child by a therapist that she was seeing as a result of the trauma brought on by Anderson’s divorce from his first wife. The kicker? That therapist was a former Catholic priest. Why is Jeff not leading a charge to uncover sexual abuse of minors by therapists? A study by the journal American Psychologist found that one-quarter of family therapists said they had treated a patient who had been abused as a minor by a therapist. Divorce is also a major risk factor for sexual abuse of minors. A crusade to reduce divorce might be a better (albeit less lucrative) way for Mr. Anderson to atone for inadvertently failing to protect his own daughter. Strangest of all is that Jeff Anderson did not learn from his own experience that defrocking Catholic priests for sexual abuse of minors (while a great service to the Church) does not actually prevent these men from abusing children again. We have lived through a horrifying period where we learned that too many priests and too many bishops were committing sexual sins and crimes instead of behaving like the fathers they are supposed to be. As Cardinal Ratzinger, Pope Benedict was a leader in the efforts to stop sex abuse by Catholic priests. When will the rest of us get serious? — Maggie Gallagher, president of the National Organization for Marriage, is known for her conservative social policy analysis of social trends and conditions. Pigeon Forge’s Cody Davis earns well-deserved national honor Being the first at something is either an honor or a curse. For Cody Davis, it’s definitely an honor. The Pigeon Forge High School sophomore has earned All-America honors from the National High School Coaches Association for his skills and talents as a wrestler. The award came after Davis participated in the national wrestling championship in Virginia last month. Davis wrestles at 171 pounds. At the national event he won five straight matches and finished sixth overall. The top eight finishers earn All-America recognition. Thus, Davis becomes the school’s first sports All-American. Competitive wrestling — not the professional variety you see on television — is a demanding, physically grueling sport that relies on skills, not

theatrics. Ever see these amateur guys? You won’t find stronger students walking the halls of any school or college. To be good at it requires lots of training, hours of gym work and a mental toughness probably unmatched in any other sport in which athletes go oneon-one. “In the wrestling world the event he went to is the best of the best in the country,” Pigeon Forge coach Greg Foreman said. “There are two pinnacle events in the world of wrestling that are true All-American status. This is one and then the freestyle nationals at the end of July is the other.” Davis is Sevier County’s first AllAmerica wrestler. Only a sophomore, he has two years to get even better, to return to

the national events and impress the dozens of college scouts who attend looking for new talent. Wrestling could be Cody Davis’ ticket to a college scholarship. While the SEC has abandoned college wresting as a scholarship sport, many other universities haven’t. Davis plans to move up in weight class to 189 next season, but may drop back to his current class as the season goes along. Whatever weight at which he wrestles, whatever success he enjoys in the future, Cody Davis has a story to tell his children and grandchildren. It’s a story of success few can claim ownership of. Congratulations to the Pigeon Forge student, his coach and others who made this possible.

Public forum Litter falling off uncovered trucks causes chronic problem

Editor: I read with delight a few weeks ago how there is going to be a crackdown on littering in the area. I must say that much litter comes out the windows of cars but there are much bigger offenders. Those offenders are the rental companies that do not require their cleaning people to cover or tie

down their truckloads of trash. Every week I see bags of trash that have fallen off of trucks from cleaning companies. Last Sunday and almost every Sunday there will be trash that has fallen off of a truck somewhere on Waldens Creek Road and/or Wears Valley Road. Even in my own development I saw two pickups with bags of trash piled higher then the roofs of the cabs that were not covered or netted. I followed a truck this past week where a trash bag in the bed was open and

the debris was being scattered down Wears Valley Road. There are some stiff fines for littering now, and these fines should be imposed on the cleaning firms that don’t cover their loads and the rental companies they work for who don’t insist that cabin rental trash be tied down. Like many people,I am sick of the litter that is along our roads in these beautiful mountains. Denny Bailey Sevierville

SOUTHERN LEAGUE

NCAA HOOPS: MARCH MADNESS ENDS IN APRIL

Duke does it, in 61-59 thrill over Butler

Walters State to play Smokies tonight SEVIERVILLE — Before the Tennessee Smokies begin 2010 Southern League play with a Thursday night season-opening trip to the Mississippi Braves, the Walters State College hardballers will visit Sevierville 7:15 p.m. tonight for an annual exhibition contest. The Smoky Mountain Showdown will bring home a pair of Sevier County boys for the fourth-annual event at Smokies Park, namely former Pigeon Forge star Adam Guinn and former Seymour Eagles standout Wes Walker. The respective freshman and sophomore are both having success with the Senators (17-6) this season.

Tiger says he’s coming back to win at Augusta By PAUL NEWBERRY AP National Writer AUGUSTA, Ga. — While acknowledging he made some “incredibly poor decisions” in his personal life, Tiger Woods still thinks he can win the Masters — even coming back from a fivemonth layoff. “Nothing’s changed,” Woods said Monday during an extraordinary 35-minute news conference at Augusta National. “I’m going to go out there and try to win this thing.” In his first full-fledged session with the media since his life fell apart, Woods entered the interview room with a smile on his face and stopped to hug one of the green-jacketed club members, Ron Townsend. Woods again took full blame for his personal failings, but stopped short of providing many new details. He wouldn’t say why he entered rehab for 45 days nor would he go into specifics about his infamous Thanksgiving night car crash, other than to say it took five stitches to close a lip wound. “All I know is I acted just terribly,” said Woods, sporting the makings of a goatee. “I just made some incredibly bad decisions, decisions that hurt so many people close to me.” He said his wife, Elin, would not be at Augusta. marriage has been in limbo since revelations that he had multiple extramarital affairs during their 5 1/2-year marriage. Woods thanked his fellow golfers for the support he’s received since announcing his return to the PGA Tour and said he was pleasantly surprised how well the fans treated him during a practice round Monday. The outing was his first before a gallery since the sex scandal made him a tawdry tabloid fixture. He even flashed a bit of uncharacteristic charm, stopping to sign autographs — something he rarely does — while heading to the practice range to get in a few extra swings. “The encouragement I got, it blew me away,” he said. “It really did. The people here over the years, I know they’ve been extremely respectful. But today is just something that touched my heart pretty good.” During the news conference, Woods said: — He never used human growth hormone to recover from knee surgery, never took any illegal drug and hasn’t undergone treatment for addiction to prescription drugs. — He plans to tone down his reactions — good and bad — on the course, and hopes to interact more with his fans during practice rounds. — He “followed the letter of the law” after slamming his car into a fire hydrant and a tree outside his home, including not talking to police investigators. In New York, adult film star Joslyn James, one of more than a dozen women who claims to have had an affair with Woods, watched the golfer’s news conference with her attorney, Gloria Allred, and a room full of reporters and television cameras at the Friar’s Club. James has asked for an apology from Woods, saying he had not been truthful to her during their three-year relationship. “I think he’s still a big, fat liar,” she said. As for Woods’ assertion that he gained perspective after the birth of his two children, James claimed the golfer was with her 10 days after his daughter was born. To his insistence that the last few years of deception were no fun, she said, “He was having a good time from what he told me.” See TIGER, Page A9

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Duke won its fourth national championship Monday night, forcing Butler’s Gordon Hayward to miss with 4 seconds left to hold off the Bulldogs 61-59 and end the tiny school’s run at the title one game short of the perfect ending. Kyle Singler had 19 for the Blue Devils and Brian Zoubek rebounded Hayward’s miss and hit one free throw with 3.6 seconds left to give Duke a two-point lead. Hayward rebounded Zoubek’s intentional miss and threw up a desperation heave at the buzzer, that hit glass, bounced off the rim and out. The win gave Mike Krzyzewski his first national title since 2001 and fourth overall, tying him with Adolph Rupp for second on the all-

time list. But life is never going to be quite the same for the little guys. Butler may have lost to Duke by two points on Monday night. By hanging with Duke and making the Blue Devils work for every last bit of their fourth national title, though, the Bulldogs reminded everyone that heart, not size or status, is what matters most. It wasn’t quite “Hoosiers.” But Butler’s run will be one for the ages. As Hayward’s desperation 3 bounced off the rim at the buzzer, Matt Howard collapsed at halfcourt, covering his face with his hands. Howard played despite being knocked loopy by a concussion in Saturday night’s semifinal win over Michigan State.

G-P’s Ron Durbin works to squat 335 pounds while coach Larry White shouts words of encouragement to the athlete.

G-P, Pigeon Forge hold yearly weightlifting meets By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer District and county rival football programs from Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg-Pittman held their respective annual weightlifting meets last week. The Orange-and-Black Tigers squad saw three new school records established. There were 14 Tiger players to join the 1,000-Pound Club this season, shattering the previous high of nine a year ago. Seth Munasque set two individual records, including a total of 1,380 pounds in the squat, bench and deadlift events combined. Munasque also came through with a record 530-pound deadlift. The Blue-and-Gold Highlanders had nine players reach the 1,000-pound goal in the three lifting events combined, but they believe three to five other players would have topped the millennium mark if not too injured to lift in all or some of the events. Pigeon Forge’s Chris Ellison won the team’s Poundfor-Pound Champion award, lifting 6.41 pounds per

pound of body weight for a total of 1,000 pounds exactly. G-P’s Ty Smith won the Pound-for-Pound award for the Highlanders, lifting 6.15 pounds per pound of body weight for a total of 1,015 pounds. Pigeon Forge 1,000-Pound Club members are Munasque with 1,380, George Sunderland with 1,240, Corey Hampton with 1,220, Michael Lombrana with 1,150, Oscar Aleman with 1,120, Shane Ball with 1,070, Brett Stelzer with 1,065, Steve Huskey with 1,020, Chase Travis with 1,015, Honre LeBar with 1,005, and George Gazetas, Patrick Barbieri, Ellison and Zakk Romans with 1,000 pound each. G-P 1,000-Pound Club members are Bill Huskey with 1,315, Bill Bales with 1,200, James Spearman with 1,150, Ron Durbin with 1,065, Turner Merritt with 1,020, Jacob Davidson and Ty Smith with 1,015 apiece, and Mahavir Patel and Terry Phillips with 1,000 each. Woods has won 82 times around the world, including 14 major titles, but he speculated that he might have been even more successful if he had shown more control in his personal life. “I would like to say yes, Woods said. “I would be more centered, more balanced, and that’s where I’m headed towards. That’s what I’m working towards each and every day. Woods acknowledged reports that he was prescribed two drugs: the sleep aid Ambien and the painkiller Vicodin, the latter to deal with four knee operations and an Achilles’ injury. “Most of the time I was on the Ambien was when my dad was sick and when my dad died. That was a tough time in my life, he said. “I was still taking some of those things to help me sleep. Woods said he’s never received treatment for either drug, but wasn’t forthcoming when asked if Ambien played a role in his car crash. “The police investigated the accident and they cited me 166 bucks and it’s a closed case, he said. Woods also addressed his dealings with Dr. Anthony Galea, a Canadian sports medicine physician who’s been linked to performance-enhancing drugs and a disputed recovery treatment known as “blood spinning. “He’s worked with so many athletes, Woods said. “There’s a certain comfort level to that when a person has worked with athletes. During his practice round, Woods heard shouts such as “Welcome back, Tiger! and “Go get ’em, Tiger! There were no boos, though the applause when he approached each green was a bit more tepid than he received in previous appearances at Augusta National. Still, it was a solid start in the process of restoring his image with fans and sponsors. Woods clearly was intent on mingling more with the fans than he did before the scandal. First, he putted a couple of balls to some kids watching alongside the 18th green. Then, a real surprise: Woods stopped to sign autographs while heading to the practice range. Ashley Hawkins was beaming as she showed off an Augusta National flag that Woods signed. The golfer can only hope that most fans feel the way she does.

“I’m excited that he’s here, Hawkins said. “I’m really rooting for him to win. His personal life is his personal life. I still think he’s a great golfer. That’s all that matters. Several big-name sponsors dropped Woods, while Procter & Gamble Co.’s Gillette unit distanced itself from the golfer by no longer including him in its ads. But the company said in a statement Monday that it looks forward to seeing Woods return to the course — and took note of his new facial hair. “The goatee is part of a wellgroomed look, the razor and shaving cream company said. John Sweeney, director of sports communication at the University of North Carolina’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, said the news conference did little to help or hurt Woods’ marketability and is unlikely to change the minds of the companies that dropped him, including Accenture and Gatorade. “He’s doing some proper things to repair an incredibly damaged legacy, but it’s going to take a couple of years here, Sweeney said. Woods, who practiced with Fred Couples and was joined for the final five holes by Jim Furyk, said he felt at peace when he stepped on the course. “I’ve had some great years, Woods said. “Unfortunately, what I’ve done over the past years to my family was just terrible. The fact that I won golf tournaments is irrelevant. Couples said it might be too soon to expect Woods to be a contender in the first major of the year. “His intimidation factor is always there, but you have to play good golf and he hasn’t played much, Couples said. “It would be crazy for me to say he’s not going to do well. But it would be crazy to say he’s the guy to beat because he hasn’t played a competitive round of golf in five or six months. “If he’s in the lead on Sunday, he’ll have no problem. If he’s not, he’ll say, ’Here’s what I need to work on. I came out, I played, I saw everybody and now I’m ready to start golfing.’ Win or lose, Woods is clearly thrilled to be back on the course. “It feels fun again, he said. “That’s been missing. ——— AP Sports Writer Rachel Cohen in New York and AP Business Writers Emily Fredrix in New York and Sarah Skidmore in Portland, Ore., contributed to this report.

Woman worries future husband can’t break mom’s apron strings

Dear Annie: After four years, I finally got engaged to “Thomas.” I love him with all my heart. Thomas is 50 years old. Until last year, he lived with his widowed 68-year-old mother. She treats him like a husband. When we became engaged, Thomas seemed afraid to tell her, and when he did, she just stared at me. His friends have joked that I will never pry him from her grip. She treats me coldly and has told friends that Thomas was perfectly happy with her until I came along. Thomas bought all the furniture and appliances in her home, does all the repair work, and pays the mortgage, taxes and homeowners insurance. Mom has created ever more debt and complains constantly about not having enough money. Thomas and I rent a small house together and are struggling to make ends meet. I resent being saddled with her debts. The deed to his mother’s house is in both of their names, with right of survivorship. Thomas has a brother and sister who are always looking for a handout. Could they get the house when she dies? After we marry, would I be responsible for this house debt? Am I making a mistake by marrying Thomas? -- Waiting To Hear Dear Waiting: If Thomas and his mother own the house jointly, with right of survivorship, his siblings should not be able to get their hands on it. As for being responsible for Mom’s debt, every state is different. We recommend you talk to a lawyer

about protecting yourself in advance. After all these years, Thomas and his mother have a very tight bond, and she is going to resist your efforts to change it. How that plays out is up to Thomas and the way he handles her. We also urge you to make a friend out of this lonely woman, or she will make you miserable. Dear Annie: My wife and I have been married 19 years. In all that time, she has not updated her wardrobe. She purchases a new item from time to time, and I make sure to tell her she looks great. But for the most part, she still wears things that are out of style, ill-fitting or just plain old. Worse, these clothes are not flattering. My wife is in great shape. I would love for her to have a wardrobe makeover so she looks like the classy lady she is, and not like the “Frumpelstiltskin” she appears to be. Money is not an issue. How can I inspire her to clothe herself according to the 21st century? -- Wardrobe Malfunction Dear Wardrobe: How refreshing to hear from a man who actually wants his wife to spend money on clothes. Many women get stuck wearing the same comfortable outfits. Take some pictures so she can see how she actually looks, and then talk to her about it. Tell her how beautiful

she is and that an update would make her feel vibrant and contemporary. Then give her a gift card to a nice boutique and arrange for a sibling or friend to go shopping with her. Good luck. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “M.F.,” the flexitarian who is worried about dinner engagements at other people’s homes. What an insult to normal, mature adults who eat what is served to us. This person is 49 years old and acting like a spoiled brat. How sad. I have never had a bad meal in my life. And I have always cleaned my plate and been thankful for all my blessings. -- R.W. Dear R.W.: We understand your impatience, but those with eating restrictions often find meals a challenge. If someone were allergic to shellfish, for example, it would be rude to knowingly serve it as the main course. “M.F.” does not expect everyone to cater to his needs, but it is not unreasonable for family members and close friends to be more accommodating.
