Census consensus: Returns average
INSIDE
Those who haven’t returned questionnaires may be mailed a second form By JEFF FARRELL Staff writer

The response rate for the 2010 census in Sevier County currently matches the national average, but that doesn’t mean people who haven’t returned their questionnaires shouldn’t expect to see a second form in the mail. Sevier County’s return rate as of Tuesday afternoon was 62 percent, same as the national rate, according to the U.S. Census 2010 Web site. The numbers are tabulated by location at 2010.census. gov/2010census/take10map. Local officials have taken note of the return rates, as census data can
impact requests for grant funding, marketing information and business plans. “I think our rate has gone up in the last few days as people sent them in at the last minute,” said Judy Fortner of with the Sevierville planning department. “If folks do still have their form in the house then they can go ahead and send that in.” While the county’s response rate matches the national average, the rate in the cities was lower. Sevierville came in at 59 percent, while Pigeon Forge had 57 percent, Pittman Center had 53 percent and Gatlinburg had 45 percent, according to data from the Census
Bureau. The average for the state of Tennessee is 64 percent. Everyone should already have received the census questionnaire in the mail, along with a return envelope. The questionnaire includes a set of 10 questions about each member of the household. The forms are to be filled out with information based on the situation as of April 1, 2010 in each home. The U.S. Census Bureau is now in the process of sending additional forms to all homes in areas that had below-average response rates in the 2000 census, as well as to all remaining households that have not returned the 2010 question-
naires. People have until the middle of the month to return the forms before census taker start going door to door at residences that didn’t respond. “We understand that people lead busy lives and may not have gotten around to sending back their forms yet,” Census Bureau Director Robert Groves said. “The replacement form gives them a second chance to get counted and help ensure their community gets its fair share of political representation and federal funds over the next 10 years.” n jfarrell@themountainpress.com

Verdict is given on lesser charge By JEFF FARRELL Staff writer SEVIERVILLE — A Sevier County jury was left with little doubt Wednesday that Warren Mastaw fired a shot that passed through both legs of William “Uncle Buck” Buchanan on Easter Sunday of last year, but lots of questions as to what happened to lead up to it and to Mastaw’s state of mind. As a result, the jury convicted Mastaw of reckless endangerment, rather than attempted first-degree murder, the most serious charge he was facing for the incident. Buchanan told the jury that Mastaw walked into his store, Uncle Buck’s Rustic Treasures, and shoved a gun in his face as they stood in the back room that doubled as his home. “Immediately he put a (handgun) in my face and said, ‘You’ve got three seconds to sit down,’” Buchanan said. “I thought he was kidding.” He and Mastaw knew each other, he said, and Mastaw was very drunk when he came to the store. Mastaw had been calling him all that day. Wednesday, he said Mastaw had been calling to ask him for the number of a married woman, and he had refused to provide it. Mastaw counted to

When a friend who’d been outside knocked on the door shortly after that, Buchanan told Mastaw he was going to answer
the door, but managed to get out a side door and run outside, where he jumped on his friend’s motorcycle. A police officer saw them fleeing and tried to stop them because he noticed they were speeding and that Buchanan wasn’t wearing a helmet. By the time they’d told the officer
what happened, Mastaw had left the scene. Detective Sam Henson of the Sevierville Police Department told the jury police later caught Mastaw when the man tried to return to his home. He left out the details of the pursuit and arrest — Mastaw allegedly led police on a chase and
fought officers, leading to a number of additional charges that he will face in a separate trial. Buchanan’s own testimony may have damaged his credibility to the jury. Defense attorney Dennis Campbell pointed out that he had given difSee shooting, Page A5

Business owner Hill said to be critical By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — Local automobile dealer Larry Hill was reported to be in critical condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center late Wednesday after he was found shot early in the day at his GMC dealership on Dolly Parton Parkway. A hospital spokeswom-
an said Hill was brought into the f a c i l ity Wednesday morning by heliHill copter and went through surgery to address his injuries. He was report-
edly in the center’s intensive care unit. The Mountain Press independently confirmed Hill was the victim in the incident. Sevierville Police Department spokesman Bob Stahlke would not confirm or deny the victim’s identity. He said only that officers are investigating what happened to the “victim.” “Basically we went to the
dealership at about 7:30 after we received a 911 call that there was a shooting victim there,” Stahlke said. “Our investigation is ongoing and is in its early stages, but it does appear the gunshot wounds were selfinflicted. There are still a few people we want to interview.” There were employees at the dealership at the time
of the shooting, though it’s unclear where Hill was found. Stahlke would not comment on any of the specifics of the incident, including why the shooting may have happened. News of the incident spread quickly, given Hill’s popularity in the community. He has spent nearly five decades selling cars locally, See hill, Page A5

nation/world briefs Half of households avoid income tax
WASHINGTON (AP) — Tax Day is a dreaded deadline for millions, but for nearly half of U.S. households it’s simply somebody else’s problem. About 47 percent will pay no federal income taxes at all for 2009. Either their incomes were too low, or they qualified for enough credits, deductions and exemptions to eliminate their liability. That’s according to projections by the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research organization. Most people still are required to file returns by the April 15 deadline. The penalty for skipping it is limited to the amount of taxes owed, but it’s still almost always better to file: That’s the only way to get a refund of all the income taxes withheld by employers.

American gets 8 years in N. Korea
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea sentenced a Boston man to eight years of hard labor and ordered him to pay a $700,000 fine for crossing into the communist country illegally earlier this year, state media reported Wednesday. Aijalon Mahli Gomes, 30, was the fourth American detained by North Korea for illegal entry in less than a year. Journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee were held for five months before their release last August, and activist Robert Park was expelled some 40 days after crossing into the country last Christmas.
By GREG BLUESTEIN Associated Press Writer MONTCOAL, W.Va. — High levels of dangerous methane gas made it impossible for rescuers to venture inside a coal mine Wednesday to search for survivors of an explosion that killed 25 workers. Crews drilled holes to release the gas, but by late Wednesday afternoon the levels were still far too high for searchers to safely enter the Upper Big Branch mine to look for four people still missing in the worst U.S. mining accident in more than two decades. Workers planned to drill another hole so they could lower a camera into a rescue chamber to see if anyone was inside, Kevin Stricklin of the Mine Safety and Health Administration said at a briefing Wednesday. He said relatives of those in the mine backed the decision to hold off on sending in
rescue crews for now. “We’ve asked the families to be patient, Stricklin said. The disaster has brought new scrutiny for Massey, which has been repeatedly cited for problems with the system that ventilates explosive methane gas and for allowing combustible dust to build up. The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration on Wednesday appointed a special team of investigators to look into the blast, which officials said may have been caused by a buildup of methane. Like many other mine operators, Massey frequently sidesteps hefty fines by aggressively appealing safety violations at the mine, according to an Associated Press analysis of mine safety records. Rescuers hoped the four miners might somehow have reached a chamber where they could survive for four days, though they acknowledged the odds were against them. Rescuers
Panel rejects local gun bans for bars bill NASHVILLE (AP) — A House panel on Wednesday rejected an effort to allow local governments in Tennessee to decide whether they want to ban guns from being carried in bars. Democratic Rep. Jimmy Naifeh of Covington tried to attach the local option provision to a bill that would allow people with handgun carry permits to bring their guns into any establishment that serves alcohol. “We normally allow our local governments to have a say-so in issues of this magnitude, Naifeh told the House Budget Subcommittee.
The proposed amendment was defeated on a 9-6 vote. It would have mirrored a state law passed last year that gives city and county governments the ability to opt out of a law allowing guns in parks. The bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Curry Todd of Collierville was introduced in response to a Nashville judge’s ruling that a similar law enacted last year was constitutionally vague. Todd said Naifeh’s proposal was an effort to kill the bill. The panel ultimately voted 8-7 to advance the measure to the House Finance Committee.
VW adds 80 jobs at Tennessee plant
CHATTANOOGA (AP) — Volkswagen’s plant in Chattanooga has a new contract with a company to provide outbound yard management and other vehicle processing services that executives say will provide about 80 jobs. A statement says Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics will create the jobs in Chattanooga. The company, with headquarters in Norway and U.S. operations based in Woodcliff Lake, N.J., has contracts with Volkswagen at other locations. The Volkswagen plant at Chattanooga plans to begin production of a new mid-size sedan in early 2011 and to eventually hire about 2,000 VW employees. A VW spokesman in Chattanooga said the 80 jobs are separate from 500 jobs that VW executives

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — With a shake of the head, a pregnant Colorado woman pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge of helping foreign terrorists who authorities say were plotting to kill a Swedish artist. Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, 31, entered the silent plea to avoid giving prosecutors a sample of her voice. The government evidence includes hard drives and other computer files that may contain voice recordings, and her lawyer did not want to provide a sample for comparison.
Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen vetoed the bill, but both chambers easily voted for an override. Republican Rep. Richard Montgomery of Sevierville called Todd’s measure “business friendly legislation because it still allows restaurant and bar owners to post a ban on guns in their establishments. Nashville Chancellor Claudia Bonnyman ruled in November that the law Chapter 7 ,

4 kids, adult die in Kentucky mobile home fire SULPHUR WELL, Ky. (AP) — An overnight fire killed four children and an adult Wednesday in a rural Kentucky mobile home with 14 people inside. Kentucky State Police Capt. Greg Baird said the blaze destroyed three mobile homes owned by the same family — one used for living space, the other two for storage. Neighbor Janet Heuer said she heard a big boom about 2 a.m., then looked outside and saw the fire. She says the family had lived on the property for three decades. State police say seven people were treated and released from an area hospital in Glasgow and two were flown to University Hospital in Louisville, where one was treated and released and the other is listed in stable but critical condition. State police Detective Andy Olson says five bodies were found and sent to Louisville for autopsies.

ferent testimony about the nature of the calls previously, and Buchanan attempted to tell the jury an item in his home was a tool he used in his wood crafting. Henson identified it as a crack pipe, although he also testified no crack was found in the house and there was no evidence the pipe had been used recently. Harry Owens, the man who helped Buchanan get away, also told the jury he had been outside and had seen Mastaw go into the store shortly before Buchanan came running out. He said he didn’t recognize the sound of the gunshot because he had

including 28 years at the lot that bears his name. “We are all just in disbelief. He’s such a good guy, said Ryan Burgin, who with Hill is part of Thomas-Hill-Burgin Chrysler Jeep Dodge. “It’s very somber out here today. We’re praying for him. And it wasn’t just Hill’s coworkers but also his business competitors who were offering intercessions for him. Just down the road from Hill’s dealership, the folks at McNelly-Whaley Ford Lincoln Mercury were also thinking about him. “Right now we’re all just in shock about the whole situation, Joe Whaley said. “He’s a hardworking man. To go to work at a GM store and end up owning it, you know he had to be working hard to get to that point. Like Whaley, Sevier County Bank President R.B. Summitt said he’s had plenty of business dealings with Hill. “My dad was Larry’s banker and friend and confidant for many years, Summitt said. “I’ve bought a few cars from him over the years. Larry always does what he says he’s going to do. He’s a good man and a good family man. We hope and pray for the best. Though Hill’s dealership, like almost every other business, has suffered through the ongoing recession, Summitt said his understanding is sales there have not been down as much as at some dealerships across the country. In fact, Hill recently reassured Summitt the lot would be staying open, despite the fact GM is closing a number of its locations nationally. He also had plans to add Buick, Summitt said. “Everybody’s hearts and prayers go out to the family, Summitt said. “I could not believe this when I heard it this morning. Ray Johnson, owner of Johnson’s Pest Control, said he and his wife Tammy became friends with Hill and his wife Karen through Sevierville First Baptist Church. Tammy Johnson, who is in a prayer group with Karen Hill, was at
pulled on his helmet and was getting ready to leave; he went back and knocked on the door to tell Buchanan he was going. Campbell spent much of the day focusing on the fact that the only evidence showed that Mastaw shot Buchanan in the foot; he maintained that didn’t reflect an intent to kill. Further, he noted Mastaw let Buchanan go past him to get out, and that Buchanan himself had said Mastaw appeared to be highly intoxicated during the incident. “You don’t go to kill someone by shooting them in the foot and letting them run away, he said. He also hammered home that Buchanan’s story changed. “He’s given a different story, twisting it a the hospital through the day Wednesday. “It’s just a sad, sad day. We’ve known him for a long time through church and all, Ray Johnson said. “We just have to rely and trust in the Lord that he’s going to take care of this situation. Like Summitt, Johnson praised Hill for being “a good family man, saying the cancer survivor was proud to have three of his four children working in the business with him. Johnson also said he’s driven a few new cars bought at the Larry Hill lot. “We do business with him because he is the kind of guy you really want to do business with, Johnson said. “He always gave good, personal service. When I did business with him, I knew I was going to be taken care of. n dhodges@themountainpress.com
little every time, Campbell said. Prosecutor Barry Williams told the jury Buchanan was consistent in saying Mastaw pointed the gun at him and said he would kill him if he didn’t comply with his orders. “Just because he didn’t finish the job, doesn’t mean it wasn’t an attempt, he said. The jury ultimately decided there wasn’t enough proof to show that Mastaw intended to kill Buchanan, They did find several enhancing factors that Judge Rex Henry Ogle will consider in deciding on Mastaw’s sentence June 2. The class E felony carries a sentence of up to two years. n jfarrell@themountainpress.com

Teaching of gay relationships bill killed NASHVILLE (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker opposed to legislation that would prohibit teaching about gay relationships in Tennessee public schools told the Republican sponsor on Wednesday that the practice is a “figment of his imagination.” The proposal sponsored by Republican Rep. Stacey Campfield of Knoxville was sent back to the State Board of Education for further study by the House Education K-12 Subcommittee. It’s at least the second year that
the same panel has killed the measure. Campfield claimed to have proof that some state counties could be headed toward such teachings. For instance, he said one school system has reportedly removed filtering software from its class computers. However, Democratic Rep. Ulysses Jones of Memphis said Campfield’s claims are not factual. “What we’re dealing with is a figment of his imagination,” Jones said. “This is not based on any

commentary
Libertarian philosophy is explained I used to be a Kennedy-style “liberal.” Then I wised up. Now I’m a libertarian. But what does that mean? When I asked people on the street, half had no clue. We know that conservatives want government to conserve traditional values. They say they’re for limited government, but they’re prodrug war, proimmigration restriction and anti-abortion, and they often support “nation-building.” And so-called liberals? They tend to be anti-gun and pro-choice on abortion. They favor big, powerful government — they say — to make life kinder for people. By contrast, libertarians want government to leave people alone -- in both the economic and personal spheres. Leave us free to pursue our hopes and dreams, as long as we don’t hurt anybody else. Ironically, that used to be called “liberal,” which has the same root as “liberty.” Several hundred years ago, liberalism was a reaction against the stifling rules imposed by aristocracy and established religion. I wish I could call myself “liberal” now. But the word has been turned on its head. It now means health police, high taxes, speech codes and so forth. So I can’t call myself a “liberal.” I’m stuck with “libertarian.” If you have a better word, please let me know. When I first explained libertarianism to my wife, she said: “That’s cruel! What about the poor and the weak? Let them starve?” I recently asked some prominent libertarians that question, including Jeffrey Miron, who teaches economics at Harvard. “It might in some cases be a little cruel,” Miron said. “But it means you’re not taking from people who’ve worked hard to earn their income (in order) to give it to people who have not worked hard.” But isn’t it wrong for people to suffer in a rich country? “The number of people who will suffer is likely to be very small. Private charity ... will provide support for the vast majority who would be poor in the absence of some kind of support. When government does it, it creates an air of entitlement that leads to more demand for redistribution, till everyone becomes a ward of the state.” Besides, says Wendy McElroy, the founder of ifeminists.com, “government aid doesn’t enrich the poor. Government makes them dependent. And the biggest hindrance to the poor ... right now is the government. Government should get out of the way. It should allow people to open cottage industries without making them jump through hoops and licenses and taxing them to death. It should open up public lands and do a 20th-century equivalent of 40 acres and a mule. It should get out of the way of people and let them achieve and rise.” David Boaz, executive vice president of the Cato Institute, took the discussion to a deeper level. “Instead of asking, ‘What should we do about people who are poor in a rich country?’ The first question is, ‘Why is this a rich country?’ ... “Five hundred years ago, there weren’t rich countries in the world. There are rich countries now because part of the world is following basically libertarian rules: private property, free markets, individualism.” Boaz makes an important distinction between equality and absolute living standards. “The most important way that people get out of poverty is economic growth that free markets allow. The second-most important way -- maybe it’s the first -- is family. There are lots of income transfers within families. Third would be self-help and mutual-aid organizations. This was very big before the rise of the welfare state.” This is an important but unappreciated point: Before the New Deal, people of modest means banded together to help themselves. These organizations were crowded out when government co-opted their insurance functions, which included inexpensive medical care. Boaz indicts the welfare state for the untold harm it’s done in the name of the poor. “What we find is a system that traps people into dependency. ... You should be asking advocates of that system, ‘Why don’t you care about the poor?’” I agree. It appears that when government sets out to solve a problem, not only does it violate our freedom, it also accomplishes the opposite of what it set out to do. — John Stossel hosts a show on the Fox Business Channel and is the author of “Myth, Lies, and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel — Why Everything You Know is Wrong.” (C)2009 JFS Productions Inc.

Tone it down
Sen. Coburn has good advice on attitudes, news sources Adults are supposed to set a good example for children. So what kind of example are some adults setting in the way they have acted during the health care debate? The country seems divided over the health care bill, although depending upon where you live you might not realize that. Yet in the weeks leading up to the vote in Congress, and in the days after that vote, some adults acted as if they had checked their manners and rules of decorum at the door. Phoned-in threats to congressmen. Mean-spirited signs waved at members of Congress. Ugly protests. Namecalling. Yes, this was a spirited, passionate issue, but not one that called for this kind of behavior. U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has seen all this play out and is bothered by it. While members of Congress may go at each other with fierce determination on the floor of the House and Senate, in fact they are friendly and cordial with each other. Democrats and Republicans are
not enemies in Washington. Coburn has seen some of the overthe-top reaction aimed at those who supported health care reform, and he doesn’t like it. Coburn, who is a doctor, was one of the most outspoken critics of the health care bill, but is disturbed by the way some Americans behaved during and after the discussions, and the way some news outlets, especially Fox, have reported on the issue. In particular, he has been upset over comments and actions directed at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. During a recent town hall meeting, he defended Pelosi and hit back at some people’s actions. “Come on now, she is a nice — how many of you all have met her?” he said to groans from the crowd, according to a CNN account of the town hall meeting. “She is a nice person. Let me give you a little lesson here. I hope you will listen to me. Just because somebody disagrees with you doesn’t mean they aren’t a good person.”
Coburn still dislikes the bill, but he also warned his town hall audience to be wary of the information they get on the bill from Fox News. “What we have to have is make sure we have a debate in this country so that you can see what’s going on and make a determination yourself. So don’t catch yourself being biased by Fox News that somebody is no good. The people in Washington are good. They just don’t know what they don’t know.” When someone in the audience said the health care bill is aimed at putting people in prison who don’t buy health insurance, Coburn shot back. “The intention is not to put anyone in jail,” he said. “That makes for good TV news on Fox, but that isn’t the intention.” Coburn advised people to get their news from a broad range of sources, not just Fox or CNN. “Watch them both,” he said. “I read two papers a day. I get perspective.” Good advice from Sen. Coburn. In fact, it’s good advice in general.

SCHS track 2nd at Big East Meet By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer JEFFERSON CITY — The Sevier County High School Smoky Bears track team finished second to DobynsBennett in the seven-team Big East Meet at Jefferson County High School on Wednesday morning, while the Bearettes earned a fifthplace finish. In boys’ action, SCHS totaled 119 points, 19 off the D-B pace of 138. What makes the Smoky
Bears second-place finish even more impressive is the fact that Sevier County does not compete in the pole vault, and several team members were not in attendance at the meet, including discuss and shot put guy Ross Heatherly. The Bears missed out on 48 potential team points due to those facts, yet finished a close second against the tough competition. In girls’ action, the Bearettes scored 56 points, behind Science Hill’s 146,
D-B’s and Jeff County’s 111 each and Bearden’s 81. Top Smoky Bear finishes include Jeremiah Foster’s wins in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Alex McCandless won both the 1,600- and 800-meter races. And the boys’ 4X800 relay team of Jordan Whaley, Mikey Hutton, Zac Carlson and Nathan Hays took home a first-place finish. Top Bearette finishes include Madison Pickle’s record-breaking day. Pickle won both the 200- and 400-
meter events, breaking her own school record set in the 200 earlier this season with a 26.84-second time. The Bearette 4X400 relay team of Alexis Conner, Kaycee Dixon, Brittney Lister and Courtney Kirby finished in second, as did the Bearette 4X800 relay team of Maryann Jackson, Lisa Burke, Dixon and Kirby. assaulted her at a nightclub, police said Wednesday. Milledgeville police Chief Woodrow Blue said in a statement that his department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation handed the investigation report and witness statements to local District Attorney Fred Bright Tuesday evening. Blue said his department would have no further comment on the case. Bright’s office on Wednesday acknowledged receiving the report and said he wouldn’t make any comment until he had reviewed it. Authorities were investigating the claim that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted the woman early March 5 at a club in Milledgeville. No charges have been filed, and Roethlisberger’s lawyer, Ed Garland, disputed the claim and hired his own team to investigate. It was the second time in a year the two-time Super Bowl champion had been accused of sexual misconduct. Roethlisberger also faces a lawsuit filed in July by a woman who says he raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel and casino, an allegation he denies. Roethlisberger has not been criminally charged in either case and has claimed counter-damages in the lawsuit.
KNOXVILLE — Matt Simms is doing his best not to think about where he might fall on Tennessee’s depth chart. That doesn’t mean his teammates and coaches aren’t constantly considering who the next Volunteers quarterback will be. “You really can’t think about it. This is spring football. We’re not going into the season. We have plenty of time before we have to worry about that,” said Simms, a junior college transfer. For the third spring in a row, Tennessee has no clear starting quarterback as offensive players work to grasp a new offense. First-year coach Derek Dooley doesn’t plan on naming a starter before the fall, but senior wide receiver Gerald Jones is looking forward to the day that changes — regardless of whom will be under center. “You need that one guy to consistently be in there for timing. You want to know what he’s thinking on a certain route and what he’s thinking in a certain coverage. So when you can finalize your quarterback and actually pick who you want to start, it helps everybody else because you can get on the same page with them,” Jones said. This year Simms and incoming freshman Tyler Bray are locked in a competition with rising senior Nick Stephens, a player who’s been around for all three offensive transitions. Dooley is making sure each of the three gets their shot in practice to prove what they can do. Stephens has spent most of the time practicing with the first team, while Simms has played with the second team in practice. Stephens split starting duties in 2008 with Jonanthan Crompton as the pair struggled and then lost the starting role last season to Crompton under coach Lane Kiffin. He struggled during Tennessee’s first spring scrimmage on Thursday, finishing 3-of-9
for 6 yards. The 6-foot-4, 231-pound Flower Mound, Texas, native admitted after the scrimmage he feels a little bit of pressure. “Everything starts with the quarterback, and I’ve got to pick it back up,” Stephens said. “I think I’m putting too much pressure on myself right now. I’m going to be the first person to say that, no matter what anybody else says.” Meanwhile, Simms has been gaining the confidence of his teammates, and Bray has impressed coaches with his throwing arm. Simms had 83 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 6-of-20 passing in Thursday’s scrimmage while Bray was 8-of-13 for 69 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Their performances have earned Simms time practicing with the first team and Bray a shot at the second team. “We’re going to keep evaluating every couple of weeks,” Dooley said. “Right now we’re going to increase the reps of Matt and Tyler and back down Nick a little bit. We’re giving everybody equal opportunity.” Jones said Dooley’s pro-style offense is tough scheme to learn for anyone but said the quarterbacks are making progress and don’t usually make the same mistakes more than once. He said Stephens is very focused and benefits from his strong throwing arm while Simms earns his teammates’ respect with his confidence. Bray has a strong arm too, but struggles a little more than the other two because of his youth, Jones said. The 6-foot-3, 209-pound Simms spent last season at El Camino Community College in California, where he completed 159 of 269 for 2,204 yards and 17 touchdowns. The Franklin Lakes, N.J., native also spent two seasons — one with a redshirt — at Louisville, where he appeared in two games. For now the Franklin Lakes, N.J., native is glad to be back playing on a big stage like Neyland Stadium and is trying to have fun.

Augusta chairman says Woods disappointed fans By PAUL NEWBERRY AP National Writer
AUGUSTA, Ga. — The chairman of Augusta National Golf Club had harsh words for Tiger Woods, saying the world’s best golfer disappointed everyone with his sex scandal and didn’t live up to expectations as a role model. Billy Payne said Wednesday that Woods won’t be judged in the future solely on his performance as a golfer, but by the sincerity of his efforts to change as a person. “As he now says himself, he forgot in the process to remember that with fame and fortune comes responsibility, not invisibility, Payne said during his annual state of the Masters news conference. “It is not simply the degree of his conduct that is so egregious here. It is the fact that he disappointed all of us, and more importantly, our kids and our grandkids. Woods is returning to competitive golf for the first time since a Thanksgiving night car crash unleashed reports of a secret private life that included numerous extramarital affairs. He was dropped by several major sponsors and spent 45 days in therapy. “Our hero did not live
up to the expectations of the role model we saw for our children, Payne said. “I hope he now realizes that every kid he passes on the course wants his swing, but would settle for his smile. Woods will tee off in the next-to-last group Thursday afternoon with K.J. Choi and Matt Kuchar, in pursuit of his 15th major championship and fifth Masters title. “We at Augusta hope and pray that our great champion will begin his new life here tomorrow in a positive, hopeful and constructive manner, but this time, with a significant difference from the past, Payne said. “This year, it will not be just for him, but for all of us who believe in second chances. “Is there a way forward? I hope yes. I think yes. But certainly his future will never again be measured only by his performance against par, but measured by the sincerity of his efforts to change. After two years, woman still not able to move on after breakup

Dear Annie: I’ve been divorced for five years. Immediately after the papers were signed, I met “Matthew.” We dated for a few months. The chemistry was perfect, but then he shocked me with an e-mail saying he didn’t have feelings for me. Annie, this was two years ago, and I’m still depressed. I’m sure Matthew has no idea it still bothers me that we got along so well and now we don’t see each other anymore. However, we still e-mail once every few months or so, just to catch up. I can’t seem to move on. What would make my life meaningful is a relationship with a guy just like him. But there is no one else in the world like him. The past two years have been like death. I wake up every morning thinking about how he doesn’t love me, and I go to bed every night knowing he’ll never be there for me. Can you give me any advice? -- Just Me Alone in Texas Dear Texas: You have given Matthew a tremendous amount of control over your life. There’s no way to know whether he was Mr. Right, but you have romanticized him into perfection and created an object of obsession. You have convinced yourself to pine away for someone who isn’t interested in you. Two years of being stuck in this rut means you will need professional help to get out. Ask your doctor to refer you to a therapist. And stop e-mailing Matthew. It’s only pouring salt on your wounds. You need to make a clean break. Dear Annie: I am
a 58-year-old woman, married to “Herb,” age 73 and retired. The last time I spoke with my younger sister (divorced and living with our mother), she said, “As long as you live with Herb, I am going to divorce you from the family.” She feels Herb is demeaning and controlling. I’m disabled. Prior to my medical condition, I had a successful career. When I was on life support last summer, my family tried to take over the decisions of my care and ignored my husband. Apparently, it’s their way or the highway. What should I do? -- Confused Dear Confused: It seems that everyone in your family is trying to control you. What about you? Don’t let your sister or anyone else dictate your life. If you are happy with Herb, stay with him. Try to keep in touch with your sister and mother, but if they refuse to speak to you, so be it. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Worried Friend,” who expressed concern that a single male has been acting as a surrogate father to a neighbor’s daughter. Now that the girl is 13, he thinks this adult male may have a sexual interest in her. He goes on to say, “It is highly abnormal for a single adult male to develop a close relationship with a young girl.” Oh, really?

Your reply seemed to bolster this ridiculous notion by saying he could be a sexual abuser. As an adult male, I find this highly offensive. It seems men are assumed to be sexual predators until proven otherwise, and even then, we are apparently prone to abuse if the right situation arises. There are plenty of adult women, i.e., middle-aged juniorhigh teachers, who will have sex with underage boys. You need to stop perpetuating this highly biased and offensive stereotype. Let’s see whether you have the fairness to print this. -- E.W. Dear E.W.: My, my, you seem a bit sensitive on the subject. We are not condemning men in general, or even in particular. We said this situation bears watching because the male neighbor has no adult relationships and seems especially interested in the girl’s developing body. It would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge that those factors indicate a possible problem. You are entitled to disagree, but we’re sticking with our original advice.
