SEVIERVILLE — A Myrtle Beach man appears headed to a trial on charges he caused a multicar wreck last Labor Day that resulted in multiple injuries.

Randy D. Zlobec is in the Sevier County Jail awaiting trial on charges including DUI, vehicular assault, failure to stop and render aid, Zlobec reckless driving, criminal impersonation, failure to wear a seat belt and four counts of aggravated assault.

On Tuesday, Zlobec’s attorney told Judge Rex Henry Ogle that Zlobec planned to stand on his plea of not guilty. His trial was set for Aug. 25. Police say he was driving south on Highway 66 when he came upon cars that had come to a halt in the congested holiday traffic. Zlobec, however, apparently failed to stop or even slow down, police said, striking one car and causing a six-car chain reaction wreck that sent

18 people to area hospitals. He then allegedly fled the scene as police and emergency responders came to the scene. Authorities caught him after he crossed the Little Pigeon River. After that, he sent a letter to The Mountain Press from jail claiming his innocence. He said he wasn’t drunk at the time of the wreck, but had fallen asleep after taking a prescribed antianxiety pill the previous night. See zlobec, Page A4

New facility receives first books in 1920s re-enactment By ELLEN BROWN Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — Just as Sevier County’s first library received its first shipment of books nearly 90 years ago, the King Family Public Library received its first books with the arrival of a hearse on Tuesday morning. Fred Rawlings, founder of the Sevierville Public Library, was a mortician with Rawlings Funeral Home. In the early 1920s, he drove to Knoxville to fill his hearse with books to stock the new library’s shelves. He was asked to use his hearse again to transport the books in 1968, when Sevier County Public Library System opened a new building. “We thought it would be really special to re-enact the moving of the books again,” SCPLS Director K.C. Williams said. “We had staff here today who have been with us for the past 25 years, some of the library’s first employees and some of the past directors.” See library, Page A5

was armed and demanded narcotics. The employee gave her several bottles of medication and she left the building. Store personnel quickly called authorities, and Sevierville Police Animal Control Officer Dave Clinton saw Lewis in the parking lot as she got into a car.

Officer Robbie Nelms and Sgt. T.C. Faulconer approached the car and apprehended Lewis before she could leave, police said. They recovered the medication, and a toy handgun. Lewis is being held in the Sevier County Jail. n jfarrell@themountainpress.com

GATLINBURG — Though the stars of the show had been on stage and wowing audiences for about a week and a half, the folks at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies officially drew the curtains back on their new Penguin Playhouse exhibit with some fanfare Tuesday. Grand opening festivities brought a host of dignitaries from across the state and a flourish of rain, something several speakers felt was appropriate. “It’s a great day to be a penguin, I think. It’s cold and raining,” Ripley’s General Manager Ryan DeSear joked. If the jesting sounds a little familiar, it’s because officials at the Titanic Museum Attraction similarly made light of precipitation that foiled the day as that ship set sail, while just a few weeks earlier Dolly Parton wasn’t laughing as she canceled a number of events at the 25th opening of her namesake park. Though the penguin party became the third major opening in just a few weeks to face the broken record of rain, the spirits of both the officials and tourists who turned out Tuesday to see the little birds weren’t dampened any. “I love penguins,” 8-year-old Jordan Williams, a fan of the television show, “The Penguins of See penguin, Page A5

CHRIS CLEPPER: Our County Commission needs to keep a close eye on the gross receipts and other financial indicators and take appropriate steps to adjust our budget before any problems occur. If any budget cuts are needed they should not come from our school system and our children’s education.

Our department heads are very aware of any financial changes. They are going a great job of holding to their specific budgets. 5. The county has no nepotism policy or a policy that limits county employees from holding office. Should there be a policy that addresses this issue? CHRIS CLEPPER: As a general principle I think it is probably not a good idea for a county employee to also be a county commissioner; however, I need to

Raymond “Jim� Ferrenberg Raymond “Jim� Ferrenberg, 90, formerly of Gibsonburg, Ohio, died April 13, 2010, at his home in Fallbrook, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a life member of the VFW. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he lived in Gibsonburg and worked for Paul’s Plumbing for 43 years, retiring in 1990. Joseph Paul McMahan

Joseph Paul McMahan, age 49, of Sevierville, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, after a courageous battle with illness. A scientist, teacher, community organizer and naval veteran, Joseph was born in Morristown, Tennessee on August 6, 1960, the oldest child of the late Joseph Lee McMahan and Betty Collins McMahan of Sevierville. Joseph attended Sevier County High School. Having served as a hospital corpsman for the U.S. Navy, Joseph completed his education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (MSc Entomology/Plant Pathology, 1996; BA Economics/ Business, 1991). After working in California as a plant pathologist developing disease-resistant strains, Joseph returned to Tennessee in 2001 to commence a teaching career. He worked tirelessly to help organize Sevier County’s first parade observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day (2006) before being diagnosed that fall with an extremely rare brain tumor, requiring surgery. Joseph was a member of Boyds Creek Church of God and a former member of Rock of Ages Baptist Church (Morristown). Joe was preceded in death by grandparents Odie and Henrietta McMahan, Paul and Ophelia Collins; father Joseph; and infant sister Ophelia Ann. He leaves to cherish his memory: devoted wife Phyllis McMahan; his loving mother Betty; sons Jermaine Chandler, Isaac McMahan and Joseph Quentin McMahan; granddaughter Zaria Chandler; sisters Lisa Faye McMahan of Knoxville, and Tammy McMahan and brother-in-law Anthony Allison of Las Vegas, NV; sisters-in-law Roslyn Kyle, Breatrice (Dan) Wilkerson of Jefferson City, Tanja Weatherspoon, Carmen Chandler; brothersin-law Jerry Chandler, Kent (Deanna) Chandler; faithful aunt Lillie in Atlanta, Ga.; uncle Bob and aunt Rosemary of San Jacinto, Calif.; cousins Charles (Diane) Treece of Murfreesboro, Carl (Jackie) Bragg from Morristown; Joseph’s church family at Boyds Creek Church of God, and a host of other relatives and friends around the globe. The two were accompanied by family who came down from Jonesborough to check out the new exhibit. They were among the tens of thousands who have already done just that in the roughly week and a half since the exhibit opened. Those who have come have seen a habitat for the African blackfooted penguins that puts the human guests right into the birds’ world, with perfect-for-children tunnels that probe into the 35,000gallon tank and an acrylic bubble that allows visitors to pop up in the middle of the display. “This new exhibit is interesting, it’s thrilling and it’s fun,� Assistant Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development Phyllis Qualls-Brooks said. “This bird habitat is just another feather in the aquarium’s hat.� The aquarium, which hosts more than 100,000 exotic sea creatures, is the No. 2 paid attraction in Tennessee, just behind Dollywood, with its about 1.3 million visitors last year. Additionally, it generated more than a half-billion dollars in revenue for the local tourism industry in 2009, Qualls-Brooks said. She wasn’t the only one who noted how important

the aquarium has been for the local economy. “We are thrilled to see this day come,� Gatlinburg Mayor Jerry Hays said. “We never thought we’d see anything like this ever in Gatlinburg. I know it’s going to be a real success. It can’t miss.� Certainly penguins are far from native to the mountains, and it took a lot of work to construct their $5 million home at the aquarium. “It was quite a project to be able to do this in this area,� said Steve File, who oversaw the construction effort. “We had our challenges going through this project.� Among those were the fact the aquarium had to continue business as usual while the work went on and, ironically for construction of habitat for an animal usually associated with frigid climes, the temperatures. Though a glass awning protected workers from the winter’s constant precipitation, little could be done to keep the cold out. “It froze everything,� File said with a laugh. “We had these heaters going full blast but they could only heat 15

In 1921, Rawlings obtained an indefinite loan of 200 books from the War Surplus Department of the American Library Association to start the first library in Sevier County. He received $233.50 from 54 local citizens for the purchase of books and also donated books from his private collection. Rawlings had also talked the Sevierville Masonic or 20 degrees, so when it was 5 degrees outside, we could only get it to about 25 inside.� Through it all, folks like File and DeSear held to the dream of opening a worldclass, interactive penguin exhibit, something they knew would be a massive

A group of library volunteers worked at the main desk during the two afternoons each week it was open to the public. In January 1966, the library board created the Sevier County Library Foundation, chaired by John B. Waters, to raise $100,000 to build a new library. It opened on Nov. 24, 1968 at 321 Court Ave., in Sevierville with a collection of books, records, art prints, periodicals and newspapers. The King Family Library’s grand opening is set for 9 a.m. Friday, May 14, at 408 High St. Tours will be given to the public through noon. The $11.5 million, 45,000square-foot library will offer traditional library services as well as historical and genealogical resources, meeting space and a reading room.

Trial begins in Palin e-mail hack

Jurors at the trial of a former college student charged with hacking Sarah Palin’s e-mail account heard opening testimony that he “didn’t believe in” what Palin wanted to do in 2008. After 22-year-old David Kernell’s attorney told a federal jury seated Tuesday that his client had no criminal intent and guessed his way into her personal e-mail, Kernell’s former college roommate testified to open the trial. Palin has been subpoenaed to testify and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Weddle said in court Tuesday for the first time that Palin’s husband, Todd Palin, and their daughter, Bristol, are also potential witnesses. n

Inmate’s son pleads for her life

A man whose mother, Gaile Owens, was sent to death row for his father’s contract murder 25 years ago made a public plea Tuesday to Gov. Phil Bredesen to spare his mother’s life. Stephen Owens said he had not seen Gaile Owens in more than 20 years when he walked into the Tennessee Prison for Women last year and told her he forgave her for his father’s slaying.

Cops: Shooter mentally ill, had grudge KNOXVILLE (AP) — A mentally ill gunman who killed a hospital worker and wounded two others was upset with a doctor he thought had implanted a monitoring device during an appendectomy in 2001, police said Tuesday. Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen IV said gunman Abdo Ibssa (AB’-doh IHB’-sah) first entered a medical tower near Parkwest Medical Center and asked for the doctor who performed the appendectomy. After being told the doctor

wasn’t there, Ibssa went to another area where patients are discharged and opened fire with a revolver. He killed himself after shooting the three women who work at the hospital on Monday, a day before his 39th birthday. “There was less than 5 seconds from the time of the first shot until the last shot,” Owen said at a news conference. Investigators found a note at Ibssa’s Knoxville apartment in which the gunman said the doctor

had implanted a chip that was being used to track his movements, Owen said. Haloperidol, an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia and Tourette syndrome, was also found at his apartment, but investigators believe he hadn’t been using it, Owen said. Owen said relatives of the naturalized citizen from Ethiopia had him committed for mental treatment in February. Also found during the search were a second

handgun, a bag of marijuana and a copy of the book “The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception” — a reproduction of a Cold War-era CIA handbook on the use of illusion and deception for acts of espionage. The gun used in the shooting had been reported stolen in March, while other one had an altered serial number but wasn’t reported stolen. Police were not sure how Ibssa obtained either gun and said he did not have a handgun permit.

Stupak’s sin: Agreeing to a compromise

What follows is a fail-safe test on whether membership in a political party is growing or shrinking: Is that party spending time, energy and effort courting and welcoming converts, or is the party hunting down heretics within its ranks to banish them for lack of purity? In 1980, make no mistake about it: Republican Ronald Reagan was openly — and successfully — seeking converts who even got their own designation as “Reagan Democrats.” More recently, Barack Obama did exactly the same as he told the nation: “There is not a liberal America and a conservative America — there is the United States of America.” But the smashing campaign victories both Reagan and Obama won have not inhibited today’s “purists” in either party from equating dissent with disloyalty and demanding that these infidels be purged from elected office. The Republicans brand the heretic who deviates from the Party line a “RINO,” for a Republican in Name Only. You almost expect some conservative court martial cross-examination of an allegedly independent Republican politician with the damning indictment: Are you now or have you ever been — a maverick? Make way for the new guys in town, the DINOs — the Democrats in Name Only. Ignoring that the Democrats largely by backing moderate (often pro-life and progun) nominees captured 52 House seats from the Republicans in the last two elections, the witch-hunters forget the first rule of elections: Politics is a matter of addition, not subtraction. Consider this real-life House Democrat whose culturally conservative, blue-collar district George W. Bush twice handily carried. This Democrat voted in the House against the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq, against the Bush tax-cuts, against drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, against a constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage. He earned the enmity and the campaign opposition of the National Rifle Association by voting for tighter background checks on weapons buyers at gun shows. He was for dropping the economic embargo against Cuba and providing debt relief for beleaguered Third World countries, and against the Patriot Act and warrantless wiretapping. Yes, he voted with his party over the past decade, according to the authoritative Congressional Quarterly, 90 percent of the time. But Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., also voted to outlaw the late-term procedure he and other opponents called “partial birth abortion” and which the late New York liberal Daniel Patrick Moynihan called “infanticide.” But the heresy that brought down upon him the all-out opposition of Planned Parenthood, NARAL ProChoice America (formerly the National Abortion Rights Action League) and the National Organization for Women (NOW) was Stupak’s successful sponsorship of the amendment to the health care bill in the House that reinforced the prohibition of government funds to pay for abortions. What the unequivocally pro-choice House Speaker Nancy Pelosi understood was that without the Stupak amendment (which won the votes of 64 House Democrats), health care reform would never have passed the House. Bart Stupak committed the sin of crafting a legislative compromise that eventually enabled the U.S. Congress to extend health coverage to 32 million fellow Americans. But he departed from the Democratic orthodoxy. The purist Democrats have gotten their wish. Bart Stupak will not run for a 10th House term. The chances are good that the Democratic nominee in the enormous First District of Michigan, which includes the Upper Peninsula (the UP) and almost half the land area of the state, will be a Connie Saltonstall, a pro-choice former county commissioner. Republicans are openly giddy about “flipping the seat “ to the GOP. Stupak’s predecessor in the House was a seven-term Republican. If Republicans do win the UP seat in 2010, then the House Democratic caucus will have lost a dependable and effective ally. But the Democratic purists will have proved their purity and that hunting down heretics can be more emotionally satisfying than seeking converts. — Mark Shields is a veteran political campaign manager and frequent television talk show commentator. Finishing the job Yet another reason emerges to feel optimistic about Belle Island Once again there is hope and expectation that we may finally see Belle Island Village finished and opened. A new development group is back in control, it appears, and this time they are asking for the county’s participation to make the project a reality. Glen Bilbo is in charge of the new group, Southern Destinations LLC, and that may give pause to some who otherwise are optimistic over a new deal. Bilbo was in charge of the group that developed Belle Island to its current status. He blamed the recession and the attitudes of lenders for the development’s failure. We’ll see if he can produce magic this time. Belle Island is the $100 million-plus project just off the Parkway in Pigeon Forge. It was to be anchored by a NASCAR attraction headed by Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond, and a Debbie Reynolds Hollywood museum. The project fell into bankruptcy a year ago and has sat unfinished since then, a

beacon to failed investment and opportunity lost. But it may be on the comeback trail under a new investment group. Bilbo attended the County Commission meeting on Monday night asking that the panel declare the county a federal recovery zone, which means it can apply for bond money available from the stimulus act passed in Congress in 2009. Southern Destinations has the Belle Island property under contract, Bilbo said, but he’s not saying much else about things. He did say there are several groups and individuals at work to save Belle Island and make it a reality. The new investors are asking the county to help them secure up to $70 million in bonds, insisting the county would not be at risk by doing so. That’s a claim that local officials must confirm before even considering such a request. Ron Sharp, the attorney who represents the county’s Industrial Development Board, says there would be no liability

in doing what the developers are asking. The developer has to sell the bonds. That’s reassuring. There can be no risk to the county’s bond rating or financial stability by any action it may take regarding Belle Island Village. The future of the NASCAR attraction, the Debbie Reynolds museum, the Knoxville Zoo area, the restaurants, the shops — all to be determined. With the project between 80 percent and 90 percent complete, coming in and finishing it for a fraction of the original cost seems like a good deal. If consumers respond and make it a success, it will have been a boon to the tourist industry, the city of Pigeon Forge and the people who find jobs on the island. There is a lot to work out on this front, a lot of detail yet to be revealed and considered. However, despite high hopes over the past two or three years, this time there is some reason to feel good about the development finally opening one day soon.

Editor: The people who dumped their unwanted items on my property on Lost Branch Road should come and retrieve it. For the life of me, I cannot understand why someone would do this. Printers and/or computer parts were just dumped down the bank and into the little creek. We are senior citizens who find it hard to clean on the side of a bank. That is true regarding all the trash that is blatantly thrown out for property owners to clean up. Editor: On an Internet report of April 12, Fox News reported that President Obama said on Sunday, April 11, that “the single biggest threat to security, both short term, medium term, and long term, would be the possibility of a terrorist organization obtaining a nuclear weapon.” If he had a terrorist in custody who had information on a pending nuclear attack, would he take all necessary measures to get the information, or would “political correctness” take priority? Actually, he has already answered this question — he has stated that our government will no longer use any means necessary, including torture, to obtain information. Gallihugh signed with East Tennessee State University, while Carter inked with Tusculum College. And according to their high school coach, both players have the ability to take their games to the college level and beyond. “I’ve been through a lot with these two guys, I’ve watched them grow

and I’m really happy for them,” said Pigeon Forge coach Mike Guinn. “And they both have the potential to go on past college if they continue to work hard and stay on track.” But for now, Gallihugh is just focussing on becoming a Buccaneer, and Carter a Pioneer. “I’m pretty excited,” said Gallihugh, who is considering a major in business or as rehab therapist. “ETSU is a great school to go to, and they have a great baseball program. They’ve got great facilities, and I’m sure it’s going to be a great experience.” Carter echoed the sentiments in regards to Tusculum.

“I’m pretty excited, and I can’t wait to begin another career in baseball,” said Carter, who is considering a major in psychology or sports therapy. “Tusculum has a great campus, a good baseball program with good coaches, and everybody has a good code of ethics they go by, so it’s just a great program.” Gallihugh was courted by a number of teams, including Vanderbilt, Maryville and even the University of Tennessee. NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans will play twice under the lights in 2010, and the team that opened last season playing away from home four of its first six games is staying in Music City for the first two this time around. The NFL released the 2010 schedule Tuesday night. The Titans already knew they had a schedule tied for the league’s toughest based on how teams finished last season with four opponents reaching the playoffs in 2009 but learned when those games will be played. From the get-go Seymour looked in control, dictating possession from the beginning by controlling the midfield. But both teams played good defense for the first 30-plus minutes of the contest, as dual goose eggs showed on the scoreboard. 411 winner Layne Clifton doesn’t even have a driver’s license For most 13 year olds driving a car is a dream still far off in the distant future. For Seymour’s Layne Clifton that is not necessarily the case. While he is still almost three years away from satisfying the state of Tennessee’s minimum requirement for a driver’s license, he is proving to be a more than capable driver every Saturday night at the 411 Motor Speedway. This past Saturday, Clifton scored his first feature win in the track’s topless modified division. That division is primarily for cars with an older chassis and a crate engine. It is meant to be somewhat of a lower cost way for folks to get into racing. And, as the name of the class implies, the cars do not have a roof although they are equipped with roll bars and other safety features. The drivers are clearly visible at work inside the machines.

This is young Clifton’s first year to compete in that division at 411. “We had a really fast car on Saturday,� Layne Clifton said. “In the heat race I didn’t think we had anything for (2009 track champion) Josh Driskill, but the car came to us as the night when on.� Clifton, who will turn 14 in June, is an 8th grader at Seymour Middle School. He has played basketball and baseball in the past but the majority of his time goes toward building his racing career. However, he does allow some time for a little ridin’ and ropin’ as a rodeo cowboy when not racing. According to Layne’s

In his typical humble manner, Berry doesn’t credit his own ball-hawking and tackling skills for making him so draftable, instead thanking players like Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu and Baltimore’s Ed Reed for paving the way for him. “I just hope regardless of position or whatever they say about safeties not going high, I hope someone recognizes the talent I can bring and not just on the field,” Berry said. It’s been kind of hard not to recognize the talent of the do-it-all player who won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top college defensive back. Berry has an instinct for being where the ball is. He was named the 2008 Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year after posting a Football Bowl Subdivision-best seven interceptions and returning them for a single-season Southeastern Conference record 265 yards. He holds the SEC career record with 494 career return yards interception return yards and was just 8 return yards shy of breaking Terrell Buckley’s NCAA career record. When he wasn’t picking off passers, he was hitting tailbacks, receivers and sometimes quarterbacks. Clips have been widely circulated on YouTube.com of two of his more memorable hits: a shoulder-toshoulder hit on Knowshon Moreno in 2008 that had the Georgia tailback sitting out a few of the following plays and a head-on collision with Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. Blake Beddingfield, scouting coordinator with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, said Berry’s versatility can really impact a team. “I think that’s why Eric is thought of pretty highly. He’s a good cover guy. He’s also good in the run game. He’s been a good player for three years at Tennessee and really had a good career at Tennessee and should go on to the league as well,” Beddingfield said. Berry is hoping NFL team officials notice what he’s done off the field as well, especially at a time when teams are cracking down on misbehaving players. He was chosen as a captain at Tennessee his sophomore year. He was a captain throughout high school while starting as quarterback and safety at Creekside High School in Fairburn, Ga., for four years. “I’ve been a captain all my life in football. That just comes naturally to me,”

Berry said. He was one of the first players to talk with Kiffin when the coach was hired at Tennessee in December 2008 to replace Phillip Fulmer, the man who recruited Berry. Instead of rejecting Kiffin, Berry did his best to encourage his teammates to accept the new coach. The 21-year-old is already trying to set an example for kids in Fairburn by using some of the money earned by signing with an agent to install new turf on the field where he played football as a kid. Berry is also doing his best to take care of his family, who has done so much to take care of him. His father, former Tennessee tailback James Berry, recently had surgery and his mother, Carol, lost her job last year. Now he’s enjoying watching them relax, and he bought his mom a brand new Land Rover to show off to her friends. Berry hasn’t completely passed on his dream of being a dentist and still keeps in touch with White to talk about life after football. “We talked about post career, what he could do,” White said. “He can still be involved in the dental field. I showed him an article of a football player who went to medical school after the NFL.”

Afterward, first-year Seymour coach Drew Payne reflected on the victory. “It was only our second shutout of the year,� Payne said. “We got a shutout the first game of the year against Clinton, and that’s something that we’ve been striving for, but haven’t been able to do, but we got it tonight.� Chris Ballard didn’t have to do much work in goal for Seymour on the night, but he did make a couple of nice saves to secure the shutout. Still the coach thought his team could have done more offensively. “We probably could have put a few more back in the net, but at the end of the day a win is a win. Pigeon Forge is a solid team and we needed that momentum. “We’ve been struggling to put a complete game together. We play excellent one half and don’t the next half. Some games we’ll play well technically, but won’t play with a lot of heart. Other games we’ll show a lot of heart and make stupid mistakes the whole game. I thought tonight we finally put it all together and did all those things well. “We’ve still got a little improving to do, but if we can finish this week strong, we’ve got a huge week next week. Surprise Smokies are 10-2 ZEBULON, N.C. — Fueled by early runs and a bullpen that didn’t blink through the final three innings, the Tennessee Smokies won 6-5 in the second game of the series against the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory, the Smokies sport the best record of any minor league club above Class-A, as Tennessee is 10-2 to begin the season. Baseball America’s No.1 Cubs prospect Starlin Castro shined at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer that gave Tennessee a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Fresh off the disabled list, starter Chris Carpenter allowed just one run on two hits in three innings of work. The Smokies added runs in the second and third to take a 4-1 lead going into the fourth inning. After a scoreless fourth, Tennessee scored two in the fifth. Submitted report NATIONAL PARK — Seymour High School science students are volunteering to spend Earth Day — Thursday — cleaning up a section of streams in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park 9:3011:30 a.m. Approximately 80 students, teachers, and adult volunteers and sponsors will participate in this third year of this event. Seymour High School science teacher Charlie Householder makes arrangements with school personnel and science club members. Dana Soehn, Volunteer Coordinator for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, chose the stream along the Spur to be cleaned up this year. Ms. Soehn will give an informational talk about environmental stewardship and voluntarism, along with safety instructions, to students at 9:30 a.m. at the park’s Welcome Center on the Spur. The event is sponsored by the Tennessee Clean Water Network, a statewide organization that organizes Tennesseans to claim our right to clean water and healthy communities, www.

Dear Annie: I’m 24 years old and confused. I have been in an on-andoff relationship with the same woman for the past eight years. A year ago, I discovered “Samantha” had been having extended, all-night conversations with “Andrew,” the same guy she cheated on me with in high school. I was so hurt that I broke off our relationship. We got back together a few months later, but during the break, I got involved with “Ava.” Ava recently had a baby boy and told me I might be the father. I have asked for a DNA test, but in the meantime, I’ve become really attached to the child and told Ava she can call on me any time. Even if the baby is not mine, I would still want to be part of his life. The other potential candidate for fatherhood changed his phone number and moved out of town. No child should grow up without a father. Am I wrong to want to be a father to this boy even though I’m back with Samantha now? -- A Man with a Good Heart Dear Man: Becoming a father to another woman’s child could profoundly change the relationship you have with Samantha. If the child is biologically yours, you have a legal obligation to care for him. If you are not the father, it is kind and generous of you to want to be part of his life, and we hope you will be. But if you intend to stay with Samantha, we recommend you let her be part of the decision.

Otherwise, you may have to choose between them. Dear Annie: My sister, “Crissy,” has been married eight years and has two young children and a third on the way. The problem is, Crissy bombards the entire family with pictures of her kids. I have two kids, and my brother has three. We all live in close proximity and see each other often. The only gifts Crissy ever gives anyone are huge, framed photographs of her children. It has become a family joke. My mom has complained to me that she has run out of room to put up all the pictures of Crissy’s children that she sends every birthday, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Annie, is it in good taste to constantly give framed photos of your family to others and expect them to display them in their homes to the point that it is intrusive? We love Crissy and her kids, but we are -- Running Out of Room Dear Running: You do not have to display every large photograph Crissy gives you. Exhibit the most current one, and put the others in a box or scan them into your computer. If Crissy asks where the pictures went, simply tell her you don’t have the space to display all of her photographs, although you’d

love to have the pictures without the frames. She may be relieved. It’s expensive to keep doing this. Dear Annie: I share the fears of “Scared to be Alone,” who thinks someone may break into her house. I agree she may need therapy to deal with her phobia. But I also think she should engage the services of a licensed locksmith to see what additional security measures could be put into place. There are newer technologies now, such as light sensors around the border of the roof. With good security, her fears might go away. -- Worth Looking Into Dear Worth: Thanks for the suggestion. Readers also recommended she invest in a state-of-the-art alarm system. These things should indeed help, but if she has a true phobia, no security measure may be enough.
