Bilbo: Belle Island could open by end of December By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer

PIGEON FORGE — The effort to revive the stalled Belle Island Village project took another step forward Tuesday morning as the Sevier County Industrial Development Board voted to serve as a funding conduit, with the developer making the bold projection the long-promised center could open at the end of 2010 or in early 2011.

The group, which works to recruit large-scale economic development to the area, agreed to allow Bilbo to issue up to $70 million in bonds in its name to fund the completion of the project, which went belly-up more than a year ago. However, officials are quick to point out that move in no way obligates the county to pay anything nor does it expose it to any liability. “We are simply acting as the conduit for these bonds,” Sevier County Economic Development Council Executive Director Allen

Commission look to change By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — It appears there will be at least four new faces on the County Commission later this year after a trio of upsets and one open seat race decided Tuesday. Commissioners Max Watson, Kenneth Whaley and Tommy McGaha all lost their re-election bids in the Republican Primary, while realtor Marty Loveday

was set to claim a place on the board after getting the most votes in the race to fill Seat 4C, which Commissioner Jimbo Conner opted not to pursue again. McGaha’s loss came as the first upset of the night, with results from his District 3 among the first to come in. He trailed challenger Randy Williams, the manager at

Sevierville’s Food City, from the time the first results came in. When the totals were released, preliminary numbers showed Williams defeating McGaha 529 to 396. Many at the courthouse speculated McGaha’s 2009 vote against rezoning a piece of property for an industrial development cost him. As for Williams, he made no guess at why he won, only pointing out that he lost by only 30 votes See COMMISSION, Page A4

County mayor wins re-election with ease By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — County Mayor Larry Waters coasted to an easy victory in a primary battle for his ninth term as the county’s executive Tuesday, besting challenger Howey Reagan by a nearly three-to-one margin. As the results were announced in a room at the courthouse Tuesday evening, Reagan trailed from the first tallies and ended the night down 6,054 to 2,279 to the incumbent. The political novice was not surprised. “I feel good. I really do,” Reagan said as he took a breather out in the cool night air after the results were announced. “For the first time running, I’m not one bit disappointed. I knew I was going to lose. Larry Waters is a good man and he’s always done a fine job. I’m not upset to lose to him.” For his part, Waters congratulated Reagan on the clean fight and invited him to lunch one day soon. “I appreciate the tremendous vote of confidence I got today from the people of Sevier County,” Waters said. “I appreciate that Howey ran a good, clean cam-

paign. I’m looking forward to the next vote in August and I ask the people for their continued support.” Waters said he looks forward to tackling some big issues in his ninth term, including wrangling the upcoming budget to a manageable position and continuing efforts to recruit new jobs to the county. Reagan offered further high praise for Waters, pointing out accomplishments like job recruitment and keeping property taxes low. For a man who just lost a heated contest, he seemed in a very positive mood — a symptom, he said, of a campaign that stayed cordial throughout. Waters has even remarked on the fact that Reagan lauded him in a public forum. “It was a good, clean campaign, and I’m proud of that,” Reagan said. “I’ve thanked Larry for that. He ran a good campaign.” n dhodges@themountainpress.com

School board candidate King, mayor’s mom in altercation Gatlinburg chief says no charges will be filed By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer GATLINBURG — Law enforcement officials were called to the polling place in Gatlinburg after an altercation between a candidate for school board and the mother of County Mayor Larry Waters. Police Chief Randy Brackins said his officers arrived to find the candidate, Gatlinburg resident Clark King, no longer on the scene and Barbara Bradshaw, 75, “very scared” after the incident in which she says the much-younger King yelled at her and wagged his finger in her face. King, meanwhile, denies the claim, saying he did nothing to provoke Bradshaw and stating she “laid her hands” on him. According to police reports filed on the incident, witnesses claim King came up to a group of Waters’ supporters and told one he shouldn’t back the mayor’s re-election bid because Waters professes to be religious but isn’t. King concedes he went to the gathering to speak to one among them about his concerns with Waters. “Now I’ll admit I went over and told Bill Gibson, a longtime friend of mine, that Larry Waters wears religion as a sports coat and takes it off when he wants to,” King told The Mountain Press Tuesday evening. “That might have provoked the confrontation, I don’t know, but she came up to me and laid hands on me. She just started going off.” In her statement, Bradshaw denies there was any physical contact between the two and claims the confrontation was mostly one-sided, though not the way King describes it. “Apparently they started arguing back and forth with each other, and she said he started yelling and acting vicious,” Brackins said after reading the incident report. “She said he was shouting at

her that her son is a liar and a thief and that he’s not a Christian. One of the witnesses said she was very scared and told Mr. King she was going to call the police. Mr. Gibson eventually stepped between Bradshaw and King, and that’s when the woman called us.” King again takes issue with the record of the events. “I told her if she touched me again I would take out a warrant on her,” he said. “I did not shake my finger at her. I never touched her. She demanded that I leave the premises. I have the right to express my political views. She’s just lying about it, but that runs in the family.” Whatever happened, by the time police officers arrived — Brackins said it took them no more than a couple of minutes to make the short trip around the side of the building — King was gone. He said that’s because he saw no reason to stick around the polling place, having spoken his piece with the Waters’ supporter. “I wasn’t out at the polls campaigning,” King said. “I see no reason to campaign. I already proved in my lawsuit that the voting machines have modems and can be manipulated from outside.” King lost a case against the city of Gatlinburg and the county calling for the revocation of results of a city commission vote several years ago. King’s bid for a seat on the board came up short, which he attributes to his belief local officials have rigged the voting machines to produce the outcomes they want. He and Waters have several times since found themselves at odds as King made allegations Waters is corrupt. No charges will be filed in the incident, Brackins said. King was beaten by incumbent Mike Oakley on Tuesday.

forward to working with my fellow board members for the betterment of our schools and community.” When it comes to the screening process for hiring school personnel, Strange favors an advisory panel made up of one or two parents from each grade for dealing with complaints and problems that “fall through the cracks.” While he doesn’t favor attendance zones, he believes parents should be encouraged to send their children to schools closest to their homes. Like Moore, he believes one of the most pressing needs for the school system is solving overcrowding. Kodak resident Strange is a 1982 graduate of Sevier County High School. He and wife Kellie have two children. He will begin his term in September. Moore could not be reached for comment Tuesday night. Oakley, a building inspector with the City of Gatlinburg, has served as a school board member for the past 11 years, most recently as the board’s chairman. While he supports the current hiring process for new teachers, Oakley does not support attendance

He also believes that while a school for Appalachian culture and the arts is “conceptually a novel approach” to pre-

when he challenged McGaha four years ago. “I’ve been hearing a lot of good things,” he said Tuesday night. “It was a good race. I respect Tommy. I was running for a seat, not running against another candidate.” The numbers announced are unofficial until the Election Commission certifies them and don’t include a handful of paper ballots in each district, though election officials said those won’t turn the results of any races. If Williams was a bit confident in the outcome, Deputy Sheriff Tim Hurst said he was nervous up to the end in his bid for Seat 7B. His race was decided by only 15 votes. Hurst barely edged out fellow county employee Duane Dodgen 251 to 236, though both men handily eliminated incumbent Kenneth Whaley, whose 139 votes may also be a reflection of his vote against the Lisega project. “I’m very surprised,” Hurst said as he celebrated with family and friends in a courthouse hallway. “I really felt I could win, but that’s about as close as you can get. I’m just honored the people of the 7th District gave me this chance again.” Hurst held the seat for 16 years before Whaley took it over by a narrow margin. Hurst said he’s looking forward to working with the other commissioners. “I don’t know who all has won, but I know there were some upsets,” he said. “There’s a great bunch of county commissioners, though. They care about the county and I really believe they want to do what’s best for the county.” Fellow Deputy Tommy

Watts wasn’t sure the incumbent in his race for Seat 1B has had the best interests of his constituents in mind in recent years. Watts beat Watson 489 to 230, with Jim Bishop (122) and Greg Bullock (116) rounding out the pack. Watson has professed himself a “proud member” of a group that has filed a number of lawsuits against the county and the commission. Watts said those actions did Watson in. “The people of the 1st District are just tired of that. They’re tired of the lawsuits and all the negative,” Watts said. “We’ve got to get rid of all this negative stuff and start working to help people and lift people up, instead of costing the taxpayers money with these lawsuits. When your commissioner sues himself, it’s pretty bad.” Watts, like several other candidates, bemoaned the low turnout, with just over 9,000 voters casting ballots. Still, he said he’s honored to have been elected. “We had a good support group out in the community and I think people really are ready for a change,” he said. “I’m just happy to serve and sit in the people’s seat.” Loveday came out on top in a three-man race to replace Conner. He got 450 votes to 334 for Roger Radel and 227 for Leonard Waring. Several of those who won in the Republican primary will have to face challenges from Democratic and independent candidates in the Aug. 5 general election. On the Democratic side of the ticket, only four candidates qualified and none of them face opposition in the primary.

Huffaker winner over incumbent in constable race Maples, Ayers win re-election By STAN VOIT Editor

on the Republican side, incumbent Jimmy Maples defeated two opponents to win reelection in the 1st District, Seat A, and Sam Ayers won another term as constable in the 2nd District Seat B. Maples got 935 votes to defeat challengers Dale Noland with 342 and Delmar Spence with 461. Ayers bested his lone challenger, Jerry Stoffle, 807-476. Constables are officers of the state judicial system under the Tennessee Constitution. They are sworn and bonded peace officers with full powers of arrest throughout the state, although they generally only operate within the county where they are elected. Constables receive no pay beyond a stipend for serving warrants. They have the option of using a marked vehicle in their duties, but must provide the vehicles themselves.

David Huffaker says there is no real secret to his success in Tuesday’s constable race. Just hard work and going door to door to meet a lot of prospective Huffaker voters. Huffaker easily defeated incumbent Bryan Lee Ogle 1,021 to 547 to win the Republican nomination for constable, 3rd District, Seat A. He has no Democratic or independent opponents in the August general election. Huffaker had never run for office before. “It’s not that anybody felt they needed change or wanted change,” he said Tuesday night. “I tried to meet a lot of people. I am pretty fortunate that I did so well. Everything worked out.” In the other two contested constable races

experience” on the island. Also there was developer Glen Bilbo, who was at the helm in late 2008 and early 2009 when the project went bankrupt and who leads the new group working to complete the effort. Bilbo told the group the development, which sits on a 17-acre island in the middle of the Little Pigeon River, is about 80 percent complete and work could start again in early July if everything goes according to plan. He also said contractors on the site have estimated there remains about six months’ worth of work to be done on the site, meaning a July start could equal an opening in December or January. Other details of the deal to revive the massive project were revealed publicly for the first time Tuesday. That includes the fact Regions Bank — which took ownership of the mixed retail, lodging and entertainment complex in foreclosure proceedings last summer — and Bilbo’sSouthernDestinations LLC have agreed to a firm closing date of June 30. Additionally, it was noted that the purchase price is likely to be around $21 million. That’s a bargain considering Bilbo told the IDB members there’s probably about $70 million to $80 million in build-out on the island already. Regions has also agreed to set aside some of that money to pay subcontractors, including a host of local companies left holding the bill after the project stalled. Many of those suffered crippling loses after investing labor and mate-

rials in the project, only to be told the Southern Venue Development, the previous owner, had gone bankrupt. The deal provides for each to get some portion of what they’re owed, though no one will get the full amount. Bilbo told the group around half of the companies have already reached agreements for the amounts they’ll take, though at least one has gone bankrupt. It seems Bilbo has proven to Industrial Development Board (IDB) officials’ complete satisfaction that the project’s previous failure was the result of the bank collapses of late 2008, rather than any bad decisions he or anyone else in the development group made. “It appears to me, looking at the documents, that everything was in order,” IDB legal counsel Ron Sharp said after the meeting. “It was a failure of financing, not a failure of the management.” Southern Venue Development apparently had a deal, according to what Sharp called a “simplified summary” of the circumstances, under which work on the project would be funded by Countrywide and then the mortgage would be maintained by Regions. That deal fell through when Countrywide went bust as the banking crisis ensued. Unfortunately, that also meant the funding for Belle Island Village dried up, forcing Southern Venue to declare bankruptcy and leading to Regions’ decision to foreclose, Sharp said. The group stopped paying subcontractors working on the project in November 2008 and all work on the site stopped in December. Bilbo will still have to

EPA proposes coal ash regulations CHATTANOOGA (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday proposed regulating coal ash, possibly as a kind of hazardous waste, while phasing out wet storage impoundments. It would allow coal byproducts to be used in concrete, wallboard and other building materials. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said one proposed option would regulate the ash and its disposal as “special waste” under the hazardous waste section of the federal Resource Recovery

and Conservation Act. The other would regulate it in the non-hazardous waste section of the law. Jackson said power plant coal ash, which contains arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, selenium and other substances defined as hazardous, has never before been regulated federally. “Both proposals reflect a major step forward,” she told reporters in a telephone conference call. The announcement came 16 months after a huge coal ash spill at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Kingston

commentary

Political polling has firm grasp We have serious shortages of jobs, of dollars in the federal treasury and of registered nurses. But when it comes to polls, there is not only no shortage — there is a glut. Every cable show, neighborhood weekly shopper, AM radio station and Website seems to have its very own public opinion poll. Humorist Bob Orben once asked, “Did you ever get the feeling that the only reason we have elections is to find out if the polls were right?” Do not get me wrong — I like polls. My personal favorite is the exit poll, which is conducted every four years on Election Day when we choose a president. Unlike surveys before Election Day, these are not interviews of people who intend to vote and then don’t vote for some reason. No, the exit poll is composed of real live voters fresh from having cast their ballots and free of any post-election “winner bias” (nobody interviewed knows who has won -- and not surprisingly, more people often “remember” having voted for a popular winner). The other appealing feature about exit polls is that because of the large number of completed interviews (17,836 in 2008), you can find out how just about any subgroup in the electorate — probably including lefthanded agnostics opposed to same-sex marriage — voted. For example, we found out on Election Day 2008 that a grand total of 7 percent of voters thought the condition of the collapsing U.S. economy was either “excellent” or “good,” and they the voted for John McCain by an almost three-to-one margin. But there is one kind of poll that sets my blood boiling. This is the alleged “poll” that is mailed to you personally by a political party committee or some advocacy group and which features questions that are so loaded that Mickey the Dunce could give you every answer. One such questionnaire arrived at my home the other day. The accompanying letter, with several “Mr. Shields” sprinkled throughout, told me that our “senators in Congress” needed to learn from me “the priorities and concerns ... during this uncertain time for our nation.” It was clearly a matter of some urgency that I answer the enclosed poll and return the completed form to Capitol Hill, where national leaders were waiting to forge a bold, new national agenda. I was asked to check one of five boxes — agree strongly, agree moderately, disagree moderately, disagree strongly, uncertain — after each of several statements. Here are a few of them: “The federal tax system is too complex,” “Balancing the budget should be an important priority for Congress,” “I believe special interests have too much influence in Washington” and “I do not support an energy plan that will cost American jobs and hurt our economy.” Just how many “disagree strongly” answers do you think those probing inquiries drew? Of course, these are not polls. Similar “questions” to these are intended only to flatter and engage the reader by supposedly soliciting his valued advice. There is an old fundraising maxim that holds: If you want money, ask for advice; if you want advice, ask for money. This is not polling. It is fundraising -- and such obvious questions are frankly insulting to anyone with an IQ at or above room temperature. While I will continue to support any and all legitimate public opinion polls, this message is for all political committees and advocacy groups that send phony “polls” with loaded questions. I care not how noble your cause might be or how much I might agree with it — all such correspondence goes directly to the recycling bin. — Mark Shields is a veteran political campaign manager and frequent television talk show commentator. Hacked off

Young David Kernell deserves proper punishment for his e-mail prank It’s hard to know what would be a fair punishment for young David Kernell. It’s for sure he’s going to spend time in jail. Any plans he may have had for a life of public service have been derailed. He messed up big tine. What he thought was a clever prank turned out to be a big-time crime that gave him a profile he didn’t want. Kernell, the son of a Democratic Tennessee lawmaker, was convicted last Friday on two charges in the hacking of Sarah Palin’s e-mail account while she campaigned on the Republican presidential ticket in 2008. The federal court jury reached its verdict against Kernell, 22, after four days of deliberation. He was found guilty of obstruction of justice and unauthorized access to a computer, but was acquit-

ted on a charge of wire fraud. The jury deadlocked on a charge of identify theft. The charge of obstructing an investigation carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and unauthorized access to a computer is a misdemeanor with a maximum one-year sentence. U.S. District Judge Thomas Phillips did not immediately set a sentencing date. Kernell was a college student at Tennessee when he came up with the password to hack into Palin’s Yahoo e-mail account. What happened next made lots of people angry and fearful. The information Kernell obtained was widely distributed, including the posting of Sarah and daughter Bristol’s cell phone numbers. The Palins suffered harassment, annoyance, disruption

of their lives and embarassment as a result of what Kernell did. He deserves to be punished. There must be consequences for bad behavior, and Kernell was no kid when he did this. He was a responsible, presumbly mature college student who knew right from wrong and, like so many other young people, didn’t think through the consequences of his actions. That cannot be an excuse for a light sentence. Whatever happens to young Mr. Kernell, let’s assume he has learned a lesson that, it’s hoped, is a lesson learned by many other would-be hackers and computer gurus. Mind your own business. When you mind other people’s, there can be trouble, and you won’t find a lot of sympathy when you get caught.

Public forum Postal Carriers Food drive needs support of community

Editor: Each year, the need for supplemental food assistance seems to grow, which means this year’s Postal Carriers Food Drive is even more critical to helping to feed the hungry in Sevier County. This Saturday, May 8, is the annual Postal Carriers Food Drive, when letter carriers across the country collect canned food left at the mailbox and bring it to the post office; then it’s taken on to the local food pantry. With demand up and giving down, I know how much Sevier County Food Ministries is counting on your donations to carry it through the summer. To help out, select a half-dozen or so nonperishable food items at the store or out of your cabinets, put them in any plastic grocery bag (you might double-bag for strength) and leave it hanging on your mailbox Saturday. Or you can just bring it by your post office this week or next. It doesn’t matter if you donate a jar of pea-

nut butter, a couple of tins of tuna, two cans of soup or a can of fruit or vegetables, as long as you donate. If your neighbors are doing the same thing, a few cans add up quickly. The food drive starts with your letter carriers, and they deserve the credit. He or she has mail to deliver and only so much space in the vehicle for food donations, yet your carrier is willing to support the food drive. Some carriers come in on their day off and run routes just to pick up food and take some load off substitutes. Without the postal carriers, there’s no food drive. Since 1995, Sevier County Food Ministries has averaged 11 tons of donations each year, which has helped get the food bank through the hot summer months, when monetary donations wane a bit. C.R.O.S.S. in Seymour receives everything that is donated through the Seymour post office. It takes a lot of people to make this drive a success, and I thank all who participate, from the carriers and post office administration, to

the scouts and Christian bikers who always turn out to help. Want to volunteer? Stop by the food ministry near the fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon. Somebody will put you to work. Call 428-5182 for more information. When we started this drive back in ’95, SCFM served 150 families. That number is now well over 1,200 families weekly. There are a lot of people hurting and hungry. You’ll find a postcard in your mailbox this week reminding you about the food drive. Please take time to fill a plastic bag up with cans and contribute. Better yet, just write a check to SCFM or CROSS in Seymour and make a difference by letting the administration buy in bulk and stretch your contribution. You can buy a lot of macaroni for 14 cents a pound. Remember, every can and every dollar and every prayer counts. This year, that statement is more true than ever. Thanks for doing your part, Jim Davis Gatlinburg

Bears lock down regular season crown SCHS cements 1st regular season title with extra inning win over Patriots By JASON DAVIS Sports Editor DANDRIDGE — It took until the last inning of the last day of the regular season, but the Sevier County Smoky Bears can finally call themselves regular season district baseball champions. Now, the real fun begins. With a 9-8 extra innings win over Jefferson County Tuesday night, SCHS earned District 2-AAA’s No. 1 seed for the district tournament, which will begin this Friday at Sevier County’s Cliff Davis Field. The Bears (25-8, 11-3 in district) will play the nightcap Friday with tournament eight-seed Cocke County, following a contest between No. 3 Morristown East and No. 5 SouthDoyle. While Sevier County knew they had the oneseed wrapped up going into play Tuesday, a loss would

have made the Bears regular season co-champs with No. 2 Seymour. A timely trick play in the top of the eighth inning made sure the Bears were the lone team atop the IMAC Conference standings. With the score knotted at 8-8 in the eight inning, Sevier County got a huge lead-off double from center fielder Charlie Fields, who’d already had a whale of a game with a 3-run homer and the defensive play of the night. “Charlie bats right after Zach Flynn, and teams aren’t going to let Flynn beat them,” coach Lance Traywick said. “Charlie’s been warming up at the plate and tonight you saw that pay off.” After Fields moved up to third on a Dillon Cate fielder’s choice, Traywick got creative. Tigers run down Gibbs, win regular season title Guinn’s boys beat Gibbs 3-2 for 3rd straight regular season 3-AA championship By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer

Cobey Hitchcock/The Mountain Press

Pigeon Forge senior short stop Bret Gallihugh, who signed last month with ETSU, runs down a Gibbs runner for an out in the bottom of the second inning Tuesday night at District 3-AA rival Gibbs Eagles. The Tigers came out 3-2 winners, securing their third consecutive regular season district title.

KNOXVILLE — He didn’t have his best stuff, but he had enough when it counted. Pigeon Forge freshman pitcher Wil Crowe (6-0) remained perfect this season in a 3-2 Tigers win Tuesday night at District 3-AA rival Gibbs Eagles, securing the Orange and Black’s third-consecutive regular season district title. The Tigers (27-4, 11-1 in 3-AA) avenged an early season 4-0 loss against

Gibbs (21-10, 10-2 in 3-AA) in March, Pigeon Forge’s first district loss in three seasons. Tuesday night’s win not only secured the Tigers’ district title, it also means Gibbs will have to travel to Pigeon Forge for what is likely to be the district tournament championship showdown next week. “I have the utmost respect for Gibbs and their entire program,” said Pigeon Forge coach Mike Guinn. “We have a great relationship with Gibbs. What you saw (Tuesday night) was some healthy competition and the way high school baseball is supposed to be played. “Both these teams respect each other.” Crowe went five innings in the win, allowing one run on three hits with six

Ks and five walks. He found himself in some tight spots throughout the night, but he minimized the damage each time. In the bottom of the second, Gibbs had runners at the corners with no outs. But Crowe finished off the inning with two Ks and a pickoff of a runner who jumped the gun on his steal attempt, keeping it scoreless heading into the third. Gibbs loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Crowe again found his composure, ending the Eagles threat with two Ks and an inning-ending flyout to center and keeping it knotted at 0s heading into the fifth. “Wil did not have his See TIGERS, Page A10

Eagles clinch 2nd with win, will have home field in tourney Seymour, Smoky Bears will host entirety of 2-AAA tournament By JASON DAVIS Sports Editor MORRISTOWN — IMAC Conference, welcome to Sevier County. The Seymour Eagles defeated the Morristown West Trojans Tuesday night 6-2, guaranteeing the 2-AAA District Baseball Tournament would be played in its entirety in Sevier County. Not bad for the two local teams’ first year in the Inter-Mountain Athletic Conference. The Bears and Eagles finished one and two in the district’s regular season, thanks to both teams’ wins Tuesday night. “We knew if we won tonight we’d host, but if we lost we could fall all the way to fourth,” Seymour coach Scott Norman said. And they played like it.

“We’re hosting. Finishing one or two, wherever we finish, we wanted to host, and we got that. And we did it with our pitching intact.” Seymour coach Scott Norman

The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the homestanding Trojans, thanks to big hits from sophomore Ben Whisler and junior Logan Sawyer. Whisler had a three-run double in the second inning to push the squad up 3-0, while Sawyer delivered a two-RBI hit in the fourth as part of a three-run rally. The six runs were plenty for Seymour’s army of pitchers, who held the Trojans to just one earned run. “We came up here and we more or less did a committee type-thing,” Norman

said on the Eagles’ pitching approach. “(Corbin) Weaver threw an inning and he did well. We went to (Brandon) Timmerman, he had a fivepitch inning and a 10-or-12 pitch inning, then we went to freshman Hunter Neff, who came in and got them for an inning. “We tried to get him into the fifth, but he walked the lead-off hitter so we went to (Keegan) Newport,” Norman said. Newport closed the door to earn Seymour the win, and he’ll still be ready for the district tournament.

“Newport can throw on two days rest, and he’s going to kind of be our closer,” Norman said. The Eagles will host one side of the 2-AAA tournament bracket, and will open with an 8 p.m. game at Don Doyle Field against seven-seeded Cherokee. Jefferson County and Morristown West will play in the site’s early game, which begins at 5:30 p.m. The winners of each side of the double-elimination bracket will play at Sevier County High School next Wednesday at 6 p.m. for the tournament championship. Blake Jones looks to make his mark on the racing world As a high school teacher I can say that many teenagers have not made plans for the very distant future. Blake Jones, however, knows exactly where he wants to be in a few years. “NASCAR here we come! he declares. While there may be many folks, young or old, who would like to claim that they will make it to NASCAR someday there are few who have the credentials that Blake has. At 13 years of age, he has already been racing for eight years. In that time he has won over 100 races. Jones has raced a variety of cars in his career including bandolero, legends and now late models. He can be found racing at the Lonesome Pines Speedway in Virginia on a regular basis but he also ventures to other tracks such as the Newport Raceway where he finished 3rd this past weekend. “We raced him in a legends car last year, explained father Teddy Jones. “He won 17 races and was the state of Tennessee champion.

squeeze play, a daring call with Cate — who hasn’t batted as frequently for SCHS this year as in years past. But the junior made the most of his chance and dropped down a perfect bunt, pushing his team ahead 9-8. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in Zack Cate to get that done, he’s been a team-guy this year, he’s grown up a lot, and I had no doubt in my mind that he was going to get that done, Traywick said. SCHS hurler Brandon Houser, in the game in relief, got two quick outs before allowing back-toback singles in the bottom of the frame, only to strike out Jefferson County’s sixth-place hitter to end the game. The Bears allowed the Patriots to make a real game of it, despite having an early 6-0 lead. A first-inning three-run homer from Fields, along with an RBI-single from Flynn put SCHS up 4-0 after one. The Bears tacked on another pair in the second thanks to back-to-back run-scoring singles from Fields and Flynn with two outs. But the Pats stormed back into contention in the third, scoring five runs off starter Charlie Gavaghan. By the bottom of the fifth, Jefferson County had rallied to tie the margin at 7-7. That’s not the only high level accomplishment for the young driver. He once won the bandolero championship at the Atlanta Motor Speedway becoming the youngest champion ever at that facility. The previous holder of that honor had been Sprint Cup driver Joey Logano. “I really love racing the late models, Blake said in reference to the 3,100 pound full bodied cars he will campaign this year. “I get to do double duty by running in the crate class and late model class every Saturday night. His love for the late model machines showed very quickly. He finished 3rd in his first ever outing in one of the powerful cars. “There is no substitute for experience, interjected crew

chief Wade Day. “The more laps we can get for him the better. Day should know. He comes with his own impressive set of credentials as a driver and a crew chief. “Wade Day is the best in the business bar none, Teddy

Jones said. “At the track everybody flocks to Wade to get advice and see what he’s doing with his cars. Blake has wasted little time in capturing the attention of the right people as he has built his already impressive resume. The side of his

ing to extra innings, but Jefferson County nearly won it in the bottom of the seventh. A lead-off triple gave the Pats the winning run just 90 feet away from the plate with no outs. Their next batter laced a flyball to center field, that looked like it might score the game-winning run. Enter Charlie Fields. The senior, who’s regularly playing center for the first year in his high school career, snagged the fly cleanly and threw a strike to home plate, nailing the Patriot runner for

the inning’s second out. “The game was on the line and Fields does what a senior does, he made the big play when it needed to made, Traywick said. Now the Bears will host the district tournament, which begins Friday. “The community needs to come out and support these boys, Traywick said. “This has been a great year for athletics at SCHS, it was started by the football team this fall, it was continued by coach Wright and the basketball team and we’ve continued the tradition of excellence. With soccer, that makes

championships in all four of the major team sports in this district. It’s a great achievement. Friday’s Senior Night needs to be not only an appreciation for our seniors and the time they’ve spent in building this program, but a celebration. It’s time for our community to turn out en mass and support these young men, because they deserve it. We need to show the IMAC what home-field advantage is all about.

car bears the name of soft drink maker Mountain Dew and the team has reached an agreement to have the National Guard offer sponsorship on a limited basis this season with the possibility of that deal expanding

next year. Also, at least one prominent NASCAR team has had a representative watching his progress. Those who have interest may well get an opportunity to see Blake race at a very high level. “We hope to run either the full UARA or Pro Cup schedule next year, he said. “We’ve got big plans if it all comes together, Teddy Jones declared. Blake Jones adds that the formula for his success is simple. “We just try to work harder than everybody else. Another reason for this New Center 7th grader’s success has been the support he receives from his family. His dad Teddy and mother Kristy have made sacrifices on his behalf. command the way he should, and the big game kind of swallowed him up early, said Guinn. “But he made the pitches when he had to, and that’s what you have to do to be successful. Gibbs senior pitcher Benton Bates, who went the distance in Tuesday’s loss, helped his own cause with an RBI single to left in the bottom of the fifth to draw first blood for the Eagles, 1-0. But the Tigers answered immediately in the top of the sixth, scoring all three of their runs in the inning. Crowe and senior Hayden Whaley got things started with back-to-back singles, putting runners at first and second to lead off the sixth. Freshman Drake Byrd came through with an infield hit that was somehow knocked down by the Gibbs short stop to keep the Tigers from scoring momentarily. Freshman Colt Buchanan stepped up with the bases juiced and hit a dribbler back to Bates, but the Gibbs pitcher’s throw sailed over the catcher’s head on a force play at the plate, allowing

Crowe to score and tying the game at 1s. Senior Trevor Matthews and junior Hunter Baker followed with back-to-back 4-3 fielder’s choice RBIs to make it 3-1 Tigers heading to the bottom of the sixth inning. “I thought Drake’s infield hit was huge for us to load the bases with no outs, said Guinn. “Drake is such a versatile player for us as a freshman, and he set the plate for those grounders to second that scored our runs. “We preach those grounders to second base in that situation. Those were the kinds of things we weren’t doing earlier this season, but we’re starting to do them now, and that’s huge for us. Senior pitcher Justin Carter took the mound for the final two innings, and he allowed things to get interesting for a moment in the bottom of the seventh. After retiring the Gibbs side in order in the bottom of the sixth, Carter suddenly found himself in a 3-2 ball game with runners at the corners and two outs. He got the final batter to ground out harmlessly, however, as the Tigers bench rushed the field to briefly celebrate the regular-season title. “I told the guys to enjoy

Rescuers pray for no more victims not drive on flooded streets were hampered by power outages. As the water began to recede, bodies were recovered late Monday from homes, a yard and a wooded area outside a Nashville supermarket. By Tuesday, the flash floods were blamed in the deaths of 18 people in Tennessee alone, including 10 in Nashville. Hundreds of people had been rescued by boat and canoe from their flooded homes over the past few days. Those rescue operations were winding down in Nashville on Tuesday, though emergency management officials were checking a report of a house floating in a northern neighborhood, trying to determine if anyone was in it. It remained unclear how many — if any — people were missing in Tennessee. Authorities in southcentral Kentucky searched Tuesday for a kayaker who was last seen Monday afternoon in the swollen Green River. “Those in houses that have been flooded and some of those more remote areas,

do we suspect we will find more people? Probably so,” Nashville Fire Chief Kim Lawson said. “We certainly hope that it’s not a large number.” The Cumberland River also deluged some of Nashville’s most important revenue sources: the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center, whose 1,500 guests were whisked to a shelter, the adjacent Opry Mills Mall, and the Grand Ole Opry House. Parts of the hotel remained flooded on Tuesday, and officials estimated it could stay closed for three to six months

with more than $75 million in damage. At the Grand Ole Opry, which is moving its shows to alternate concert halls, water reached the stage and the first floor of the Minnie Pearl building was flooded over the doors, said customer service representative Rita Helms. The Acuff Theater had four floors flooded, and the Gaslight Theater also was under water, she said. Floodwaters also edged into the Country Music Hall of Fame and LP Field where the Tennessee Titans play, though the Ryman Auditorium — the longtime former home of the

NASHVILLE (AP) — The dark waters of the Cumberland River slowly started to ebb Tuesday as residents who frantically fled the deadly flash floods returned home to find mud-caked floors and soggy furniture. Rescuers prayed they would not find more bodies as the floodwaters receded. The river and its tributaries had flooded parts of middle Tennessee after a recordbreaking weekend storm dumped more than a foot of rain in two days, rapidly spilling water into homes, roads and some of Music City’s best-known attractions. At least 29 people were killed in Tennessee, Mississippi and Kentucky by either floodwaters or tornadoes. Water submerged parts the Grand Ole Opry House, considered by many to be the heart of country music, and the nearby Opryland Hotel could be closed for up to six months. The flash flooding caught many here by surprise, and efforts to warn residents to

Advice

Parents must walk fine line after widowed son delivers ultimatum

Zits

Blondie

Baby Blues

Beetle Bailey

Dear Annie: My daughter-in-law took her own life a few days after Christmas, leaving behind our son and 10-year-old grandson. “Jane” was only 33, but we loved her like our own daughter. The marriage had been in trouble for a while. The last time I spoke to Jane, she suspected our son had been unfaithful and was thinking of divorce. Instead, she died of a drug overdose. Now, just a few months later, our son has announced that he has “someone special.” This girl is 23, and apparently, he’s been seeing her for quite some time. My husband and I are still grieving for Jane. When I told my son that it might be a little too soon for him and especially for our grandson, he became unglued. He said, “I’m not dead, and neither is my son. We need to keep on living.” Our son intimated that if we don’t accept this relationship, he will keep us from our grandson. He says the boy is fine with the new girlfriend and her family, and we should be, as well. But we know the boy doesn’t have a choice. We are still grieving, but if we don’t give him our blessing, we worry we will lose out completely. What can we do? -- Grieving in the Midwest Dear Grieving: Your son sounds like a real charmer. Still, you have to be very careful, or he will cut you out of his life altogether. It is not necessary to give your blessing, but you must stop criticizing the relationship. Tell your son

that, yes, he is entitled to live his life as he chooses. But you know he loves his child, so you hope he will consider counseling for the boy, who is surely having difficulty accepting his mother’s sudden death whether he shows it or not. Then ask how you can help your grandson. (We recommend extra time with the grandparents.) Dear Annie: After 20 years of marriage, my husband and I have separated. We seem to love each other, but we have grown apart. For the past year, my husband has detached himself from the rest of us, and when he is with the family, he is miserable. The truth is, it’s been so nice and stress-free since he left. The kids and I get along better than ever, and they seem much happier. I have told my husband that it will take time to work through our differences, but he says it isn’t happening fast enough. He made the decision to move out, and now it’s still not good enough for him. What am I supposed to do? -- Married Dear Married: Both of you seem happier apart, and it may be the “limbo” situation that is creating the problem. So decide. You can divorce. You can remain separated indefinitely, but see a lawyer so it is legally binding regarding financial support and child visitation. Or, if you

want to reconcile, get into counseling, together or separately, and see whether those differences can be worked out. But please pick one already. Dear Annie: “Still Miss Him” said her father died and she could never forgive her mother for remarrying. She should accept that her parents had a marriage that her mother honored by wanting another one. My father died at age 68 after 49 years of marriage. Two years later, my mother married a widower. The two daughters from each marriage considered it a tribute to their happy first marriages that they wished to marry again. The benefits: I gained a second father, our children have grown up with a grandfather, and our grandchildren have a great-grandfather. My mother passed away in January, but I am blessed to have my wonderful second dad alive and well at 100 years old. -- A Lucky Gal Dear Lucky: Thank you for sharing your family “love” story. Gulf Coast watches, waits for oil spill path By HARRY R. WEBER Associated Press Writer NEW ORLEANS — The sea calmed Tuesday, helping efforts to fight a massive oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico but providing scant comfort for people along beaches and bayous waiting anxiously to find out when and where the mess might come ashore. So far only sheens have reached into some coastal waters, and the oil’s slow progress despite an uncapped seafloor gusher has given crews and volunteers time to lay boom in front of shorelines. That effort was stymied by choppy seas into the weekend, but officials were optimistic Tuesday as the sun came out and winds eased. Coast Guard spokesman David Mosley said Tuesday that rig operator BP PLC would continue trying to cap the leak and authorities hoped to dump chemicals from an airplane to help break up the sheen. The uncertainty has been trying for people who live along a swath of the Gulf from Louisiana to Florida. The undersea well has been spewing 200,000 gallons a day since an April 20 explosion aboard the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon that killed 11 workers. The rig was owned by Transocean Ltd. “You mentally want to push it back to the west, and then you feel guilty for doing so,” said Jan Grant, manager at the St. George Inn on St. George Island, Fla., about the path the spill might take. BP has been unable to shut off the well, but crews have reported progress with a new method for cutting the amount of oil that reaches the surface. They’re

using a remotely operated underwater vehicle to pump chemicals called dispersants into the oil as it pours from the well, to break it up before it rises. Results were encouraging but the approach is still being evaluated, BP and Coast Guard officials said. The latest satellite image of the slick, taken Sunday night, indicates that it has shrunk since last week, but that only means some of the oil has gone underwater. The new image found oil covering about 2,000 square miles, rather than the roughly 3,400 square miles observed last Thursday, said Hans Graber of the University of Miami. Fishing has been shut down in federal waters from the Mississippi River to the Florida Panhandle, leaving boats idle Monday in the middle of the prime spring season. A special season to allow boats to gather shrimp before it gets coated in oil will close Tuesday evening.

Shahzad, 30, had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan, where he had a wife, according to law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation into the failed car bombing. Shahzad became a naturalized U.S. citizen last year shortly before traveling to Pakistan, a federal law enforcement official in Washington said, speaking on condition of anonymity amid the ongoing investigation.

John Pistole said. President Barack Obama said the FBI was investigating possible ties between Shahzad and terrorist groups. Obama said “hundreds of lives” may have been saved Saturday night by the quick action of ordinary citizens and law enforcement authorities who saw the smoking SUV parked in Times Square. “As Americans and as a nation, we will not be terrorized. We will not cower in fear. We will not be intimidated,” Obama said.

NEW YORK — A Pakistani-born U.S. citizen was hauled off a plane about to fly to the Middle East and will face terrorism charges in the failed attempt to explode a bombladen SUV in the heart of Times Square, authorities said Tuesday. One official said he claimed to be acting alone. Faisal Shahzad has admitted his role in the botched bombing attempt and is talking to investigators, providing them with valuable information, Attorney General Eric Holder said. The investigation stretched to Pakistan, where intelligence officials

said several people had been detained in connection with the Times Square case. Shahzad was on board a Dubai-bound flight that was taxiing away from the gate at Kennedy Airport late Monday when the plane was turned around and federal authorities took him into custody, law enforcement officials said. Federal officials had placed him on a “no-fly” list hours before his arrest. Shahzad, scheduled to appear later Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan, will face terrorism and weapons of mass destruction charges, Holder said. “Based on what we know so far, it is clear that this was a terrorist plot aimed

Infiniti G35 recalled because of air bags WASHINGTON (AP) — Nissan Motor Co. said Tuesday it will recall nearly 135,000 Infiniti G35 sedans and coupes to address a problem that could lead to the air bag not deploying in a crash. Nissan said the recall involves G35 Coupes from the 2005 to 2007 model years and G35 Sedans from the 2005 to 2006 model year. The automaker says the air bag unit’s wire harness under the front passenger seat could wear down and interrupt the air bag’s signal. In a crash, the air bag may not deploy and could increase the risk of an injury. Nissan spokesman Colin Price said there have been no injuries reported. Price said Nissan would provide NHTSA with information on the repair in May and begin notifying owners of the recall in June. Price said if a vehicle’s red air bag warning light had turned on, the owner can bring their car into their dealer for repair. For more information, owners can call Infiniti at (800) 662-6200.

N. Korea leader making rare trip BEIJING (AP) — North Korea’s reclusive leader Kim Jong Il was making his way Tuesday to China’s capital on a rare overseas trip meant to be so secret that Beijing refused to confirm it — despite videos shot by foreign media showing him leaving a Chinese hotel. Kim is expected to meet with President Hu Jintao and other top Chinese leaders just as South Korea inches closer to blaming the North for the recent sinking of a navy ship that killed 46 sailors.
