SEVIERVILLE — Attorneys started laying out their cases Wednesday for the jury that will decide whether a local physician sexually mistreated his patients or whether he was conducting proper medical examinations that four male patients misinterpreted. In opening statements, Assistant District Attorney General Steve Hawkins told the jury that Dr. Rodney Carter gave unrequired prostate exams, touched the genitals of patients and asked them to touch themselves for his own pleasure. “This wasn’t a medical procedure,” Hawkins said. “It was done for sexual gratification.” Defense attorney Bryan Delius countered that the first alleged victim to come forward lied about his exam, and that led to the charges against his client. “The lies of (that man) put Dr. Carter here,” Delius said. The Mountain Press does not typically identify the alleged victims in sex crimes. Carter is charged with four counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault. Hawkins said the alleged victims — none of whom had met each other before they began testifying about this case — tell similar stories of Carter performing prostate exams that weren’t required or of touching their genitals and saying it was part of an exam, when that was not the case. Delius said during opening statements that all of the actions described were proper responses to complaints medical records show the alleged victims made to the doctor or his staff. In addition to testimony by the victims, both sides are expected to present expert witnesses to bolster their positions on whether Carter was following proper procedures. The court spent the morning seating the jury,

SEVIERVILLE — Sevierville Mayor Bryan Atchley and Fire Chief Mike Rawlings could be called as witnesses for the defense in the trial of Dr. Rodney Carter on charges he had improper sexual contact with male patients at LeConte Family Practice. Defense attorney Bryan Delius mentioned their names as potential defense witnesses Wednesday morning as he, Circuit Judge Richard Vance and Assistant District Attorney Steve Hawkins worked to empanel a jury. Delius didn’t elaborate on the nature of their potential testimony. They selected a panel of eight men and 12 women to hear the case against Carter, who is charged with four counts of rape and three counts of sexual battery involving male patients at his office. The jury will be reduced to 12 after testimony is complete. Carter owns LeConte Family Practice, where he worked as a physician prior to the charges. His

believe he could stomach the graphic nature of the case, which will involve testimony that Carter had improper sexual contact with the victims during prostate exams. “(It) gives me the creepy crawlies,” the potential juror, who was excused, said. “’I’ll do my best, but I’m going to have a strong emotional response.”

Sevier County residents have the opportunity to participate in the nation’s largest one-day food drive on Saturday — and they only have to walk as far as their mailbox. The Letter Carriers’ Food Drive will have postal workers picking up nonperishable food items at mailboxes during regular mail time, then delivering them to Sevier County Food Ministries in Sevierville or CROSS Ministries in Seymour. “It’s their biggest fundraiser of the year,” Sevierville Postmaster Lynn Poarch said. “We’ve been doing this for 18 years, and each year it gets bigger and bigger. We get a lot of other people in the community involved, too, like motorcycle ministries and Girls and Boy Scouts. It’s become a family thing here.” The drive is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, as well as fellow national partners See FOOD DRIVE, Page A4

Reckless driver sentenced to 6 months Submitted report A 21-year-old Virginia man has pleaded guilty to reckless driving and been sentenced to six months in jail after he accelerated at high speeds to elude national park rangers. Nathan O’Quinn of Clintwood, Va., was involved in the incident that occurred around 12:30 a.m. Sept. 19, 2009. Park rangers attempted to stop O’Quinn’s motorcycle on the Foothills Parkway Spur (U.S. 441) for excessive speeding. O’Quinn, who sped away at speeds up to 114 mph with a female passenger on the back of his Suzuki 600 motorcycle, crossed

double-yellow lines, passed on curves and nearly struck another vehicle head-on. Chief ranger Bill Wright said, “We have been seeing an increase in the number of individuals who are fleeing to elude arrest over the last few years. This type of behavior presents enormous risks, especially in the park with its narrow, curving roads and heavy traffic. “There seems to be a growing perception that fleeing into or through the national park will allow the offender to escape.” Wright said. “However, due to the limited number of exits from the park, those individuals are nearly always caught. Their actions prior to being stopped

seriously jeopardize the safety and well-being of unsuspecting visitors and fellow motorists they encounter, and place the eluder in great risk of injury or death.” Park managers stress that each instance is different, and in some cases, the subject may not be pursued at high speed for reasons of safety. However, due to good communications with rangers throughout the park, and continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies surrounding the Smokies, those individuals fleeing apprehension will still be caught and will face penalties that are often far stiffer than what they would receive for their original offense.

Dolly parade lineup is set

Flames destroy remote-area trailer By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer

Submitted report PIGEON FORGE — Pigeon Forge’s annual springtime salute to Dolly Parton marks its 25th anniversary with Friday’s homecoming parade. “Interest started bubbling up as early as January,” said Sherri Kirby, special projects coordinator for the Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism. “People really want to be part of a silver anniversary.” This is the 25th year of operation for the Dollywood theme park. A color guard from Boy Scout Troop 110 will lead the way along a 2.5-mile Parkway route. Behind the Boy Scouts will be more than 100 entries. The most anticipated float will carry Parton, who grew up in Sevierville and is the namesake of Dollywood, the area’s largest seasonal employer and Tennessee’s most visited tourist attraction. The theme for the 2010 parade is “Celebrate the Dreamer in You.” Marching bands from Pigeon Forge and Sevier County high schools are among the music providers, while Shrine groups from London and Shepherdsville, Ky., and members of the Red Hat Society will be entered. Entertainers from many of Pigeon Forge’s theaters will ride on special floats. Other entrants include the Knoxville Zoo, Zorb Smoky Mountains, the Foothills Antique Tractor and Engine Club and a Wells Fargo stagecoach. The parade will start at 6 p.m. at traffic light 6 and end at light 3. “Each year’s Dolly Parton homecoming parade is a grand celebration of what’s great about America. It’s Pigeon Forge’s way to publicly thank Dolly, and it’s also a way to celebrate family, neighbors and fun,” said Leon Downey, executive director of the Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism. Crews from two fire departments were too late to save a doublewide mobile home that went up in flames Wednesday morning in a remote part of the county. Trucks and personnel from the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge departments were sent to the scene after emergency dispatchers received a pair of calls shortly before 9 a.m. from passersby who first noticed smoke hanging around a hill off Mill Creek Road, then confirmed a structure fire. The home at 1210 Laurel Lick Road was already completely claimed by the flames before the trucks got to the site, though. “It was really burning by the time we got the call and got up there,” Pigeon Forge Fire Department Chief Tony Watson said. “A large part of that is it’s just such a sparsely populated area. It’s going to take a while even for somebody to notice something’s going on and then it’s going to take us a long time for us

to get out there.” The response to the scene was slowed further by the fact Laurel Lick is essentially a one-lane road through that area and the trucks had trouble getting up the driveway. Even before the calls came in, emergency officials were gearing up because they could see smoke rising from the hillside where the home was located, Pigeon Forge Fire Inspector Roger Price said. “There was smoke visible in the hollow already,” he explained. “In fact, the initial call we got was just to check on thick smoke in the area.” Fortunately, no one was home at the time the blaze broke out and, while the home was ruled a complete loss, there were no injuries. The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of Wednesday afternoon. Also responding to the call were crews from the Sevier County Ambulance Service and Sevier County Sheriff’s Department. n dhodges@themountainpress.com

which consists of 12 men and four women. Four members will be eliminated after the case is ready for deliberation; until then all are considered full-fledged jurors, Judge Richard Vance said. The first victim who came forward — the same man who Delius said set the case forward — spent much of the afternoon on the witness stand. He said Carter was his family physician and he had been going to LeConte Family Practice — Carter’s office — regularly because he was being treated for attention deficit disorder while in his teens. He and his mother also knew Carter because he attended the same school as Carter’s daughters, he said. When he was 15, he went on a visit where Carter gave him a prostate exam while no one

case through media coverage or discussion with acquaintances who were familiar with the case. Some were also eliminated because the jury will be sequestered during the proceedings, which are expected to last until Friday. The questions gave some early indications of the course both sides could take. Hawkins told the jury the state will try to prove that Carter presented his actions as part of a proper

continuing. As he left, the doctor told him before his next monthly visit he should not gratify himself for 24 hours prior to the appointment. The doctor then told him they should keep that matter between them. “That’s when I knew I’d been molested,” he said. He told his mother, and talked to a counselor about the incident without revealing the identity of the doctor, he said. His mother eventually took him to another doctor, where he saw a nurse practitioner who had worked for Carter and told her about the incident. She told the physician, who was obligated to tell police, and that started the investigation. Delius, during crossexamination and during opening statements, indicated Carter was concerned the teen was sexually active because of ailments he complained of to the doctor, although the alleged victim maintained on the stand and

at the time that he was not active when the incident occurred. It was those complaints, combined with the patient saying he wasn’t sexually active, that led Carter to perform the examination which led to the charges, he said. Delius indicated that Carter’s staff had problems with the alleged victim before the alleged incident. During his opening statement, he also indicated that on one occasion after the alleged incident the man was interviewed by a psychiatrist who asked him if he’d been molested, and the alleged victim did not say anything about the allegations at that time. Wednesday’s testimony concluded with testimony from the alleged victim’s mother, who recalled the day he told her he thought the doctor had molested him. Court is scheduled to resume today at 9 a.m.

medical exam, when in fact they were not. “They went there and had what they thought were standard medical procedures, but our position is that was not the real motive (for the contact),” he said. They would not have consented to the contact if they had understood Carter’s real motive, he said, and he will argue that means Carter obtained consent by fraud. Delius indicated he will argue that the alleged victims misconstrued contact that was part of a standard exam. “These medical procedures were done with

the consent of the four patients. Everyone understood what was to be done.” He also asked if the potential jurors understood different doctors could disagree on what action to take when a patient presents different problems. “Medicine is an art,” he said. “Everything’s not exact.” Vance already ruled on one legal question that arose during the trial. An attorney representing a doctor called by the defense asked the judge to quash the subopena calling for his client to testify.

Delius indicated his questions will center around an alleged victim’s involuntary commitment to a psychiatric ward after the alleged incident. The attorney argued that anything the victim said to his client would be privileged. Vance eventually ruled the testimony was admissible, but only on the limited grounds of asking if the alleged victim mentioned Dr. Carter when asked if he’d ever been molested.

else was present in the room. Carter used a glove and lubricant when he performed the exam, although the witness said he thought it was painful and lasted “quite a while.” Delius, during cross examination, asked him if Carter told him he was experiencing tenderness in his prostate gland; he said he didn’t recall that. He mentioned the exam to his mother, but they returned a month later. On that visit, Carter performed a similar examination, but then said he needed a semen sample. The doctor asked him to touch himself, and when the patient didn’t become aroused, the doctor fondled him, the alleged victim said. He told the jury he asked if he could go into a bathroom for privacy, but that Carter told him this was normal procedure. Eventually, the victim said, he told Carter he wasn’t comfortable

Musicians lose millions in gear NASHVILLE (AP) — Brad Paisley’s H2O Tour is all wet. Really, really wet. Paisley is one of hundreds of Nashville’s top stars, working musicians and tour support company owners who lost what will likely be millions of dollars in gear due the historic floods in Music City. Paisley was poised to start rehearsals for the water-themed tour when record rains inundated the area. His staging and props are under water, most of his guitars, amps and equipment are destroyed — though his

favorite guitar was spared — and he’s scrambling to find replacements and suitable rehearsal space with the first stop on the tour at Virginia Beach, Va., just two weeks away. “I sent a Tweet the other day that basically told people that when they come to the show just know that what you’re seeing has been fully tested under water,” Paisley joked in a phone interview Wednesday with The Associated Press. “You’re talking about total cred. commentary

Obama says unpaid interns are exploited Do you employ unpaid student interns — college students who work in exchange for on-the-job training? If so, President Obama’s Labor Department says that you’re an exploiter. The government says an internship is OK only if it meets six criteria, among them that the employer must get “no immediate advantage” from the intern’s activities. In fact, the employer’s work “may be impeded.” Impeded? No immediate advantage? I’m in trouble, then. I have an intern, and I’m getting immediate advantages from her work all the time. I’ve had interns my whole career and gotten lots of immediate advantage from them. Occasionally, I’ve been impeded — but the better interns did the research that made my work possible. I’d asked my TV bosses to pay for research help, but they said, “You think we’re made of money?” So I asked colleges if students wanted internships. Many did, and from then on I got much of my best help from unpaid college students. Did I exploit them? Obama’s Labor Department says it’s hired 250 new investigators to catch exploiters like me. I tried to get the department to answer my questions, but it declined. So I spoke with Village Voice writer Anya Kamenetz, who wrote a column titled “Take This Internship and Shove It” in The New York Times. (http://tinyurl.com/2anss9s) “We have minimum wage laws in this country for a very good reason,” she replied. “We had them to avoid exploitation like child labor. But what’s wrong with a free internship if a student learns something about the career he wants to pursue? I was a little stunned by Kamenetz’s answer: “Employers could say we cannot afford to pay anybody, so why should we be forced to pay the guy who cleans the floors?” Because they wouldn’t get people to clean floors if they didn’t pay. But I guess I shouldn’t expect a New York writer to understand markets. “Interns are people that come in and work for below minimum wage,” she said. “They pull the bottom out of the labor market, and it’s less fair for everybody.” So it should be banned? “There are a lot of ways to fill in the need for interns and the need for college students to get experience. One way is for colleges to pay stipends.” But they won’t. “They will if the law is enforced. Another way is for companies to hire students that are eligible for federal work-study.” Oh, I see. The taxpayers should pay for my interns. “Nobody is saying that these interns should go away,” Kamenetz added. “What they’re saying is a company should put money in their budgets to pay people the minimum wage to work for them, and that is just the basic issue of fairness. If you start working for free, where’s it going to end?” Give me a break. It would end when the interns have the skills to earn market salaries. Minimum-wage law and union rules already killed off apprentice jobs on construction sites. Contractors say: If I must pay high union wages, I’ll hire experienced workers. I’d lose money if I hired a kid and helped him learn on the job. My interns often told me that working — unpaid — at WCBS or ABC was the best learning experience of their lives: “I learned more from you than at college, and I didn’t have to pay tuition!” It was good for them and good for me. Kamenetz said, “Studies show that when companies pay their interns, they design the internships better.” Please. A few years ago, my old employer, ABC, started paying our interns. That was good for well-connected students who got internships, but bad for those who were turned down. ABC cut the number of interns by more than half. There’s no free lunch. What’s happened to the rights of contract and free association? If student and employer come to an agreement, both expect to benefit or it wouldn’t happen. The student is no indentured servant. If the employer “exploits” the student, the student can quit. The contract ought to be nobody’s business but theirs. Butt out, federal bullies. Grown-ups can take care of ourselves. — John Stossel hosts a show on the Fox Business Channel and is the author of “Myth, Lies, and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel — Why Everything You Know is Wrong.” (C)2009 JFS Productions Inc.

Stay-at-home voters Apathy abounds in primaries, but other factors evident in choices Several things are evident in looking at the results of Tuesday’s primary election. Voters don’t favor candidates who are relentlessly negative and don’t have the best interests of the county at heart. They don’t seem to mind if candidates work for the county or have a perceived conflict of interest, if those are considered the best candidates running. And people in Sevier County are much too apathetic about a local election. Let’s talk about apathy. There are roughly 52,000 registered voters in Sevier County. Only about 9,000 voted in both the Republican and Democratic primaries. That’s about 17 percent. Was it a lack of interest? Lack of knowledge? Indifference? A disconnect between the voters and the officeholders? Maybe some of all those things. Whatever the explanation, we simply have to do a better job of encouraging people to vote in elections. We make it easy for them, through early voting

and a quick in-and-out at the polls on election day. Those who don’t vote are certainly not silent when it comes to opinions and attitudes about what elected officials do. Those who vote have more entitlement to sound off. All the candidates associated with those endless lawsuits and cheap shots at local government were defeated on Tuesday. People appreciate opposing points of view, when they are presented in a respectful, mature, rational manner. What they simply won’t abide — as they showed in their choices Tuesday — is opposition lacking those essential principles. We need candidates and officeholders who will be prickly, who will ask tough questions and not go along to get along every time. When all members of a governing body are in lockstep on everything, we lose something, But that opposition has to have some basis in fact and logic, and it has to be grounded in reason. When it’s not, voters reject the people behind such

actions. Mark Strange was an outsider who challenged an incumbent school board member in the Northview/Kodak district and won. He was successful because he worked hard, presented his ideas in a mature manner and represented change voters could believe in. Much will be expected of him as a member of a school board dominated by long-serving members. The number of county commissioners who are members of the sheriff’s department grew by at least two. There are understandable concerns about this, to be sure, but absent laws or rules to stop it, voters get to decide if that bothers them. They chose two deputies to join the County Commission. We will see if the two are willing to be detached from their jobs when it comes to making tough decisions about the budget and other issues. Congratulations to all who won and all who ran.

Public forum Postal Carriers Food Drive needs support of community

Editor: Each year, the need for supplemental food assistance seems to grow, which means this year’s Postal Carriers Food Drive is even more critical to helping to feed the hungry in Sevier County. This Saturday, May 8, is the annual Postal Carriers Food Drive, when letter carriers across the country collect canned food left at the mailbox and bring it to the post office; then it’s taken on to the local food pantry. With demand up and giving down, I know how much Sevier County Food Ministries is counting on your donations to carry it through the summer. To help out, select a half-dozen or so nonperishable food items at the store or out of your cabinets, put them in any plastic grocery bag (you might double-bag for strength) and leave it hanging on your mailbox Saturday. Or you can just bring it by your post office this week or next. It doesn’t matter if you donate a jar of pea-

nut butter, a couple of tins of tuna, two cans of soup or a can of fruit or vegetables, as long as you donate. If your neighbors are doing the same thing, a few cans add up quickly. The food drive starts with your letter carriers, and they deserve the credit. He or she has mail to deliver and only so much space in the vehicle for food donations, yet your carrier is willing to support the food drive. Some carriers come in on their day off and run routes just to pick up food and take some load off substitutes. Without the postal carriers, there’s no food drive. Since 1995, Sevier County Food Ministries has averaged 11 tons of donations each year, which has helped get the food bank through the hot summer months, when monetary donations wane a bit. C.R.O.S.S. in Seymour receives everything that is donated through the Seymour post office. It takes a lot of people to make this drive a success, and I thank all who participate, from the carriers and post office administration, to

the scouts and Christian bikers who always turn out to help. Want to volunteer? Stop by the food ministry near the fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon. Somebody will put you to work. Call 428-5182 for more information. When we started this drive back in ’95, SCFM served 150 families. That number is now well over 1,200 families weekly. There are a lot of people hurting and hungry. You’ll find a postcard in your mailbox this week reminding you about the food drive. Please take time to fill a plastic bag up with cans and contribute. Better yet, just write a check to SCFM or CROSS in Seymour and make a difference by letting the administration buy in bulk and stretch your contribution. You can buy a lot of macaroni for 14 cents a pound. Remember, every can and every dollar and every prayer counts. This year, that statement is more true than ever. Thanks for doing your part, Jim Davis Gatlinburg

Ex-Lady Vols assistant DeMoss returns to Tennessee By BETH RUCKER AP Sports Writer

KNOXVILLE — Mickie DeMoss is returning to Tennessee, where she previously spent 18 years as a Lady Vols assistant coach and was a part of six national championship seasons. DeMoss left coach Pat Summitt’s staff seven seasons ago for the head coaching position at Kentucky. Four seasons later she abruptly resigned from Kentucky

“It is just great to be coming back to Knoxville,” DeMoss said. “The University of Tennessee, the Lady Vol family and the Knoxville community have always been such a big part of my life. I was honored and excited when Pat asked if I would be interested in coming back to Tennessee.” A 33-year coaching vetMickie DeMoss eran, the former Louisiana and later joined coach Tech point guard will fill Gail Goestenkors’ staff at the vacancy created when Lady Volunteers speTexas as an assistant.

cial assistant Stephanie Glance was recently hired as the Illinois State coach. Glance spent much of the 2009-10 season working as an assistant coach in place of Daedra CharlesFurlow, who has been dealing with an unspecified illness. “I guess Mickie had the seven-year itch,” Summitt said. “Seriously, we are thrilled to have Mickie back in the Lady Vol program. She is tied in to so much of our championship success throughout

the years. “Her resume is so much richer now as a result of her experiences over the past seven years,” Summitt said. DeMoss was named the 2005-06 Southeastern Conference coach of the year after leading Kentucky to a 22-9 record, their first NCAA tournament appearance in seven seasons and a win over Summitt’s Lady Vols during the regular season. TKA soccer team picks up 10th win GATLINBURG — The King’s Academy Lions soccer team improved to 10-5-1 on the season with a 2-0 win over GatlinburgPittman Tuesday night. The Lions outshot the Highlanders by a whopping 32-3 margin thanks to a defensive strategy employed by the Highlanders. “We couldn’t put more than two goals in,” TKA coach Paul Mobley said. “They forced us to take a lot of outside shots, and our shooting was atrocious. “They packed their defense well, they basically played defense the whole game and had a couple of counter attacks.” Jordan Smith scored the Lions’ first goal unassisted, while Young-Woo Cha nailed a second half goal, assisted by Jonathan Rose and Smith. The regular season is now done for the Lions. They will have a postseason play-in game on Saturday, but details on the match are still undetermined. From submitted reports

G-P baseball plays for its life tonight By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer KNOXVILLE — The GatlinburgPittman Highlanders hardball team has been snake bitten more than once this season, but the Blue and Gold are hoping for a little postseason spark and some signs of life from their bats to keep their season alive for at least another day. In order to do just that, the No.6-seeded Highlanders will first have to defeat the No.7-seeded Austin-East Roadrunners 5 p.m. tonight at Fulton in a District 3-AA Tournament play-in game. A Blue-and-Gold win would guarantee at least one more day of G-P baseball this season. If G-P manages to win over A-E tonight, they’ll advance to a 7:30 p.m. clash against the No.3-seeded Fulton Falcons, also scheduled for tonight at Fulton. The winner of that game would advance to play the No.2-seeded Gibbs Eagles 5 p.m. Friday night at Gibbs, with the loser sliding to the loser’s bracket for an elimination battle 7:30 p.m. Friday, also at Gibbs. On the other side of the bracket, the No.1-seeded Pigeon Forge Tigers first play a tournament game 5 p.m. Friday at Pigeon Forge, against the winner of Thursday night’s match-up of No.4-seeded Union County and No.5-seeded Carter. chitchcock@themountainpress.com

Texas’ recruiting efforts while coaching the Longhorns’ post players “In her three years with us, Mickie has helped build a strong foundation for the future of Texas women’s basketball,” Goestenkors said in a statement. “We understand her desire to return home at this stage in her career, and Tennessee is where she considers home after previously spending 18 years of her coaching career in Knoxville. We wish her the very best.”

SCHS senior Thomas Garreau, center, had this shot blocked by the South-Doyle goal keeper in a recent match, but the keeper paid a price with a shot to the ribs. Garreau scored two goals Tuesday night in a 3-1 win over Karns.

SCHS soccer Bears stay hot By JASON DAVIS Sports Editor SEVIERVILLE — The Smoky Bears earned another soccer victory on Tuesday, tying their own school record of 13 wins set last year. The Bears topped Knoxville school Karns 3-1. “It was a good win tonight on Senior Night,” coach Bryan Atchley said. The Bears first goal came by way of senior Thomas Garreau on an assist from Cory Brewer and Erick Flores. “Erick played it in from the corner, Cory got a flick on it and Thomas finished it,” Atchley said. In the meantime, Sevier County was playing a whale of a game on defense. “They didn’t get a lot shots on us, the defense played really well again tonight,” the coach said. “Seniors Doniminic

(Kendall), Thomas (Garreau) and Sam Collett were all playing well.” Early in the second half the Bears added another goal to the scoreboard. “We came out really well, got a corner early,” Atchley said. “Erick put a nice ball to the front post and Thomas got a header — that gave Thomas two goals on senior night, and made it 2-0.” The defense loosened up some with the two-goal lead, and Karns made the most of the opportunity. “We got a little lax there,” Atchley said. “Karns did a nice job of controlling the center, and they got a goal that should have been cleared. “But we responded, Erick Flores scored unassisted halfway through the second half and made the final 3-1.” The coach commented on his other two seniors, who

also showed nice effort on Senior Night. “Alex (Byrd) probably played the best game of the year, and Jeiryn Villalobos got a start and did a nice job for us tonight,” Atchley said. The JV also picked up a win, 3-0, with goals by Luke Trentham, Corey Ramsey and Seth Powers. The JV finished 2-1-4 on the season. Now SCHS will turn its attention to the district soccer tournament, which they’re hosting. Play starts Monday night with Seymour facing Jefferson County at 5 p.m. and Morristown East and West playing at 7. Sevier County earned a bye and will first play on 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The opponent will be determined during play on Monday. mpsports@themountainpress.com

The video of a 17-year-old fan being chased around the field and finally Tasered at a Philadelphia Phillies game drew laughs as it became an Internet sensation. Around the major leagues, though, many players and managers aren’t joining in. While some question the use of force on a teen who ran on to the field as a lark, plenty of players, baseball officials and security officers say it’s difficult to make that determination in the moment. Recalling the stabbing of tennis star Monica Seles in 1993, and the beating of Royals first base coach Tom Gamboa in 2002, they stressed the need to feel safe on the field. “You’ve got to do whatever you think is necessary to stop some of these fans,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “It’s a wacko fan. I’m all for it.” It says something about the distance that has grown between fans and players, but also about the concern that’s developed about security among everyone at the ballpark. Some of baseball’s enduring images come from fans on the field — like the two kids in Atlanta patting Hank Aaron as he rounded second base after breaking Babe Ruth’s career home run record in 1974. Then there was Morganna, “the Kissing Bandit,” who made a tradition of sauntering onto the field and plopping red-lipsticked smooches on players’ cheeks in the 1970s and 80s. But there also is a darker side to fans getting in on the action, particularly in the last 20 years or so. Gamboa was mugged by two fans at a Royals-White Sox game in Chicago. The Houston Astros had to rush to the aid of outfielder Bill Spiers when he was attacked by a fan in Milwaukee in 1999 and the NBA’s Indiana Pacers brawled with Pistons fans in Detroit in 2004. “I think it’s important that the players are protected out there,” Houston manager Brad Mills said. “You never know what’s going to happen.”

Pennsylvania fireworks store has video of New York bomb suspect

Giant box being loaded on barge bound for Gulf PORT FORCHOUN, La. (AP) — A 100-ton contraption to help funnel out oil spewing from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico was loaded onto a barge Wednesday so it could begin its journey to the leak site about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast. The giant-concrete-andsteel box is the best shortterm solution to bottling up the disastrous oil spill that threatens sealife and livelihoods along the Gulf Coast. BP spokesman John Curry said it would be deployed on the seabed by Thursday and hooked up to a drill ship over the weekend. The barge was expected to start its trip later Wednesday. The box is the latest idea engineers from oil giant BP PLC are trying after an oil rig the company was operating exploded April 20, killing 11 workers. It

sank two days later. BP is in charge of the cleanup and President Barack Obama and many others have said the company also is responsible for the costs. BP capped one of three leaks at the well Tuesday night, a step that will not cut the flow of oil but that BP has said will make it easier to help with the gusher. Two satellite images taken Wednesday morning indicate oil has reached the Mississippi Delta and the Chandeleur Islands off the coast of Louisiana. It’s not clear whether the oil is on shore, but it’s very close, said Hans Graber, director of the University of Miami’s satellite sensing facility. U.S. Coast Guard Lt. James McKnight said crews remained at the Chandeleurs on Wednesday after officials

got a report of oil coming ashore, but they have not located it. “They’re sitting there, basically, waiting for the first signs of any kind of a sheen to touch the islands, he said. Graber said the images also show oil drifting south, toward the Loop Current, which scientists say could carry it toward Florida and the Florida Keys. The northern edge of the current may have already picked up some oil.

believe he is not involved with the attack, the official said. Police have not interviewed the man. Authorities said Shahzad was not expected to appear in federal court on Wednesday. His appearance was canceled Tuesday in part because of Shahzad’s continuing cooperation with investigators, but authorities said they had shed little light on what might have motivated him. Until recently, his life in the U.S. appeared enviable. He had a master’s degree from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, a job as a budget analyst for a marketing firm in Norwalk, Conn., two children and a well-educated wife who posted his smiling picture and lovingly called him “my everything on a social networking Web site. But shortly after becoming a U.S. citizen a year ago, he gave up his job, stopped paying his mortgage and told a real estate agent to let the bank take the house because he was returning to Pakistan.

on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the case. Authorities say Shahzad has admitted his role in the botched bombing plot and is cooperating with investigators, but don’t yet know whether others were involved in the plan to blow up the SUV. U.S. officials in Washington said Wednesday they’ve been unable to verify statements that Shahzad trained at a Pakistani terror camp, according to the complaint against him, and haven’t linked him to any terror group. Meanwhile, the official told the AP that the video police released right after the botched bombing of a man shedding his shirt near the SUV had the unintended effect of falsely reassuring the real suspect he wasn’t a target. The unidentified man was never referred to as a suspect, but Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in his first briefing after the failed bombing that police sought to interview him. Investigators

NEW YORK (AP) — A man accused of trying to detonate a car bomb in Times Square was videotaped buying consumer-grade fireworks at a Pennsylvania store that a company official said were not nearly strong enough to make a powerful bomb. Bruce Zoldan, president of Ohio-based Phantom Fireworks, said Faisal Shahzad, 30, was captured on surveillance video buying fireworks from his company’s Matamoras, Pa., showroom, within the last two months. “The M-88 he used wouldn’t damage a watermelon, Zoldan said. “Thank goodness he used that. Shahzad was charged Tuesday with trying to blow up a crude gasoline and propane device inside a parked SUV amid tourists and Broadway theatergoers. He was in custody after being hauled off a Dubaibound plane he boarded Monday night at Kennedy Airport despite being under surveillance and placed on the federal no-fly list. “I was expecting you. Are you NYPD or FBI? Shahzad told customs officials who came aboard the jet to arrest him, an official with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press Wednesday, speaking

Advice

Sister feels like an afterthought in siblings’ family vacation plans

Dear Annie: My sister “Justine” has invited me to go on vacation with her three times. The problem is, she consults with my other two sisters and their husbands to come up with the date and place without any input from me. She just phones with the information and expects an immediate reply. Given the short notice, my husband and I have not been able to go. I don’t understand why Justine can’t give me a little more choice in the matter. Last time, she called on my cell phone and expected a “yes” or “no” answer while I was in the car. She had airline information up on her computer screen and was ready to book the flight. Annie, I have seven grandchildren that I help take care of. I needed to consult with my daughters and check my calendar at home. I feel like an afterthought. Or maybe she doesn’t want me to go and is hoping that the short notice and lack of options will make me decline. I am the youngest of four sisters. We also have three brothers, who are never asked to go. Sometimes I think that might be less hurtful. There have been other occasions when Justine has said derogatory things to me in front of others. I am so taken by surprise that I never have a good comeback. I don’t want to cause any family turmoil, but would like to be treated with some respect. How do I do that without causing hard feelings? -- Left Out Dear Left Out: Justine is accustomed to bossing her baby sister around. Talk to her, as well as to your other

sisters, and explain the vacation problem. Ask if they could please give you more options when selecting a date because you would love to go. And when Justine insults you, call her on it. You don’t have to be clever. Practice the phrase, “Why would you say such a hurtful thing?” and repeat as needed. Dear Annie: My stepdaughter, “Hannah,” is getting married soon. The problem is, her mother is pushing Hannah to let her stepfather walk her halfway down the aisle. Her father will then walk her from there to the altar. My husband is devastated that when people turn around to see the bride, they will see her with the stepfather first. What are the guidelines for such a situation? My heart breaks to see my husband try to deal with this without sharing his thoughts with Hannah. -Sad on a Happy Day Dear Sad: It is not uncommon for stepfathers to walk the bride partway down the aisle. It is how a bride can show gratitude to someone who helped raise her. And Dad still gets to take Hannah to the altar. Mom, however, should not be pressuring Hannah one way or the other, and neither should Dad. Brides are under enough stress. Support your husband by helping him accept Hannah’s decision, whatever it is, and by assuring him that it does not detract from his importance in his

daughter’s life. We hope Hannah will tell him this, as well. Dear Annie: I read the responses to “Still the Mom,” but I guess I’m in the minority. I wish I had never met my biological mother. She was quite pretty but terribly vain, and believed a woman was defined by how many men she could attract. She was a gossip and a troublemaker with a sordid past, which took years for me to detach from my own identity. Despite it all, I tried to have a friendship with her, but she wasn’t interested. I was rejected all over again. Worse, I was 18 when I found her, and my adopted mother blew a gasket. She thought I didn’t love her and made my life miserable. -- Not Always Greener Dear Greener: Doing a search for a birth parent is always a risk because not every situation works out as anticipated. What is truly sad, however, is your adopted mother’s inability to be supportive when you needed her. We hope things are better now.
