Ceremony honors all veterans By JEFF FARRELL Staff writer SEVIERVILLE — Sevier County’s Memorial Day ceremony was moved inside the County Courthouse Monday due to the showers that rolled through the area in the morning, but the weather didn’t dampen the turnout. People crowded into other County Commission meeting room to join in the ceremony to honor veterans and people currently serving, and in particular those who died in the line of duty. The ceremony moved back outside for the playing of Taps and a salute by a local honor guard. The hour long service included a traditional ceremony for those missing or killed in action, a roll call of deceased Sevier County veterans and an address by retired Air Force Col. Stephen Holbert. He urged the crowd to reflect on the veterans who aren’t here, but who are remembered on Memorial Day with flags at their graves. “Each of those American flags represent not only their service to this nation, but to each and every one of us,” Holbert said. “They picked up the check so the rest of us can enjoy the land where we live.” He also urged everyone to stay informed and question authorities whenever they’re preparing to send the military in harm’s way. There were veterans in the crowd from World War II up to the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and from each branch of the service. Ray Gray, a retired senior master Sgt. from the Air Force, said he’s been attending the ceremonies in Sevier county since moving here almost 30 years ago. “I think it’s a very moving service,” he said. SEVIERVILLE — Memorial Day might be the unofficial start of summer, but it’s the official start of the season for the Sevierville Family Aquatic Center. The pool opened Saturday, and officials there said they’ve already had a good turnout. Ciara Campbell was relaxing while her son, Skyler, played in the pool. It was already here second trip, she said. “We were here yesterday,” she said. “He loves it here.” Holly and Bruce Wilson came from Chattanooga to visit Bruce’s family over the long holiday weekend. They brought their three daughters to play at the pool. “It’s a good deal, and we can keep an eye on them,” Holly said.

A Gatlinburg man died Sunday in a single vehicle accident on Highway 321. A passerby noticed a Jeep Grand Cherokee had crashed along the road at about 3:36 p.m. Sunday, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Investigators found that John E. Ramsey, 28, of Gatlinburg, died in the wreck. It appeared Ramsey had lost control of his vehicle and gone off the road, according to a THP report. The Jeep went about 170 feet before striking a tree. He was not wearing a seat belt. Authorities believe the accident happened early Sunday morning, but was not discovered until a passing motorist noticed the Jeep and called 911.

Vouchers available for computer training Submitted report The Tennessee Career Center at Gatlinburg is offering free technology training as part of Gov, Phil Bredesen’s Elevate America-Tennessee partnership. In a public-private venture, anyone can receive training in Microsoft skills, beginning with computer basics and ranging up to Information Technology professionals. When training is completed, free certification testing is also available. For more information, contact Donna Mullholland at 436-4381. Those seeking training do need to act fast. Vouchers to participate must be claimed by July 26. Training can continue for 12 months. Vouchers for certification, though, end July 26. The usual cost of certification training and testing can be up to $1,000. “This is a great way to boost your technology skills, said Melissa Reynolds, assistant director of WIA Career Center Services for Walters State Community College. Most people will qualify for training that leads to a Microsoft Business Certification, Reynolds said. Reynolds says that everyone in Tennessee who does not already have a certification is eligible to participate in the program. Tennessee is the 16th state to participate in the program, which is sponsored by Microsoft.

While many who are participating in the program have been part of the workforce for years, Reynolds and her colleagues are hoping to get the word out to a different group – recent high school and college graduates. “Many young people today grew up with computers and would be ready for the certification test immediately or after a few short lessons. I hope those students will take advantage of this.

You can do all of it but the actual test at home. Or, if you don’t have a computer, you can do it at a local career center. “This certification is proof of your skills. When you apply for a job, every applicant may claim to have Microsoft skills, but this certification will prove to the employers that you have those skills, Reynolds explained. Vouchers may also be obtained at http://elevateamerica.tn.gov.

Ramsey denies playing politics

NASHVILLE (AP) — Republican Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey says his gubernatorial aspirations aren’t a factor in his insistence on ridding the state budget of local projects that he calls pork barrel spending. And yet in explaining his opposition to spending $16 million on a fish hatchery in Carter County or $5 million on the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Ramsey draws back to his campaign motto in his gubernatorial TV ads. In the Blountville auctioneer’s words: “This is a symbol of running things the Tennessee way, and not the Washington way.

Proton therapy coming to state

NASHVILLE (AP) — A planned Knoxville cancer treatment center is set to become the first place in the state to offer proton therapy. The state’s Health Services and Development Agency approved an application last week from Knoxville-based ProVision Trust to build a $118.8 million center and fill it with proton therapy cancer treatment equipment. ProVision has lined up support from the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Meanwhile, the Tennessean reports, a Franklin group is looking for a medical institution partner for a second planned center.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The economy trudges ahead yet debt dogs many Americans, stressing them out even as they firm up their own financial foundations. There are new jobs produced but old worries persisting for people despite belt-tightening and boosted savings, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll. About 46 percent of those surveyed say they’re suffering from debt-related stress, and half of that group described their stress as “great deal or “quite a bit. On the other hand, about 53 percent say they feel little or no stress at all. That’s in line with findings from last year, even though times seem better today: The economy is growing and generating jobs, and households have made progress in repairing their financial footing, trimming debt, watching spending and saving more. It’s a big turnaround from a year ago — a shrinking economy, jobs jettisoned as businesses struggled to survive the deepest recession since the 1930s. So why aren’t the stressed — and the notso-stressed — feeling better? For starters, it just doesn’t feel much like a recovery to many people. Unemployment is stubbornly high — 9.9 percent. The jobless face fierce competition for work. Those with a job are watching their paychecks shrink. A growing number of people are at risk of falling into foreclosure, and only those with the most stellar credit probably can get a new loan. AP-GfK polls show that only 20 percent say the economy is good, compared with 15 QUALITY EYEWEAR AT AMAZINGLY LOW PRICES!

percent last year. Cynthia Bryant, 73, feels stress from her bills — much of that heartburn related to medical expenses. “I need a different car. I can’t afford it. I have to watch every penny that comes in, says Bryant, who worked as a purchasing agent for a computer company before she retired. Bryant, who lives in a Denver suburb, gets by on a fixed-income that hasn’t budged, although her expenses — rent, groceries and other basics— have risen. Ken Goldstein, economist at the Conference Board, a research group that keeps close tabs on consumers, says it’s people’s individual circumstances — more so than their sentiment about the economy — that shape their confidence and their stress over debt. “It’s about what happens to me — my house, my car, my job, he says. Christina Standridge, 33, of Milwaukee, says she’s stressed about her debts, including car payments. Laid off twice in the past two years, Standridge has watched her income drop. She worries about losing her current job as an administrative assistant for a company that designs and builds waste water control systems. Standridge and her husband, who works at a factory fixing machines, have one daughter. The family is watching the pennies. “We’re trying to spend less and pay off the bills, she says. “We’re cutting corners wherever we can. We’re trying to do things that are relatively cheap, she adds, such as having a backyard barbecue rather than going out to eat or to the movies. “Bills gotta be paid, she says. MEMPHIS (AP) — Two Memphis Police officers with the Air Support Unit were injured when they were forced to make an emergency landing in their helicopter. WMC-TV reports the accident happened on Sunday during a training exercise. Both the pilot and his instructor were able to walk away, but complained of numbness in the back. The instructor was taken to the Regional Medical Center in noncritical condition. Maj. Venell Steper said the helicopter was about 500 feet in the air when it had to make an emergency landing. Steper said the reason for the landing is unknown and there was no engine trouble.

From near-death to degree UNION CITY (AP) — James “Trey” Hamilton III, a 1997 graduate of Obion County Central High School, completed work on his second college degree May 15 from the University of Tennessee at Martin. Earning two college degrees is quite an accomplishment for anyone, but it is especially so for Hamilton, who could not even open his eyes four years ago — much less attend class — due to a terrible boating accident that left him in a coma. In 2002, he earned his first degree at UT Martin in international studies with a minor in Spanish. His second degree proved to be

much more challenging. On Nov. 13, 2005, he hit his head on the aluminum step of the boat in which he was a passenger after the boat hit a tree at high speed. He was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City and then airlifted to the Vanderbilt Trauma Center in Nashville, where he had to be revived. A few days later, a trachea tube was placed in his throat and a feeding tube was sewn into his stomach. Shortly after that, a shunt had to be placed in Hamilton’s skull to relieve the pressure from the swelling in his brain. Doctors diagnosed him as being in a persistent vegetative state

with very little hope of recovery. A few days later, doctors discovered the shunt in his brain had caused him to develop two different bacterial infections. As efforts were made to treat these infections, he developed a staph infection. Finally, the infections were cleared and he was moved from the Trauma Center to a long-term care unit in Milan. On Dec. 15, 2005, Hamilton miraculously awakened from the coma he had been in for 32 days. However, the road to recovery would not be easy as he would have to relearn everything from walking and talking to eating.

Bullying Arizona will not succeed It’s open season on Arizona. A Kennedy compared Arizona’s law to the slave trade. Boycotts of Arizona by governments, convention-goers and girls basketball teams have been declared. A former Phoenix Suns basketball star who is now the mayor of Sacramento put the repulsive logic of the Arizona boycott in shocking clarity. “I still have many friends in Arizona, and know the state is not a land filled with hatred. But sometimes Arizonans need a reminder of their foolishness. If we shun them, maybe they will get it.” If we shun them, maybe they will get it. Or maybe not. The boycott will cost Arizona $90 million in hotel business, the mayor of Phoenix predicted. He opposes the law and the boycott, which will hurt all Arizonans including illegal aliens. Why is the president of the United States and his party acting this way? To jack up the Democratic vote. Let’s be clear about one thing: The attempt to humiliate Arizona is not about solving the immigration issue. If anyone wanted to actually solve the problem, they would not begin by bullying Arizona. Sixty percent of Americans support Arizona. People who were serious about actually reforming immigration would begin by defusing, not inflaming, the racial issues. Americans are pro-immigration. It is part of our DNA. We are also pro-rule-of-law, and pro-powerful-leaders who care what we think. We believe racial understanding is a two-way street. I cannot speak for all Americans, but I can tell you about this American: I am sick and tired of the way working-class folks are treated as objects beneath contempt when they react the way any normal human being would react to uncontrolled immigration. (Imagine dumping 1,000 hardworking, law-abiding, illegally immigrating Iowans in a small Mexican village -- how would the locals react?) This is a generous country. Millions of Latinos are not rushing to our borders because we are such a racist society. Serious immigration reform must begin by refusing to play the race card, by attempting to conciliate the legitimate concerns about immigration’s sometimes serious local costs. It is not that racism doesn’t exist -- of course it does. But when ordinary Americans have normal concerns — when they object to their children being bussed an hour across town in order to pursue cultural elites’ visions of statistical racial harmony, or to a border so porous that the rule of law appears a joke — they get told in no uncertain terms by powerful culture makers to go stand in the corner, like bad children. When people in my presence criticize Arizona I ask them: “Did you know the week the bill passed, an Arizona deputy sheriff was shot in the stomach by a suspected illegal immigrant with an AK-47?” They get quiet. They hadn’t heard about Louie Puroll. The relative lawlessness of Mexico is spilling across our borders. “Border Patrol agents have been told at daily musters that the Mexican drug cartels have put a $250,000 bounty on their lives,” reports the Examiner.com. One agent said, “We were warned about this recently at several musters, and we were advised to take this threat seriously and to take precautions.” The lawfulness of American society is a precious commodity. Our tradition of welcoming immigration and the idea of racial equality are both precious commodities too. There is no easy answer. But right now, American sheriffs are being gunned down with machine guns in the Arizona desert. The governor of Arizona is pleading in vain with the president of the United States to send more National Guard helicopters to help secure the borders. And the president of the United States is standing with the president of Mexico criticizing the very hardworking, law-abiding Americans who are trying to do the job that the president of the United States doesn’t want to do. — Maggie Gallagher, president of the National Organization for Marriage, is known for her conservative social policy analysis of social trends and conditions. United we stand Tom Newman just the guy to return United Way to its former success The hiring of Sevier County native Tom Newman to run the United Way could be just the tonic to jumpstart an agency that has really hit the skids in recent years. United Way fund drives have barely reached half their goal in the last couple of campaigns, and that has a trickle-down effect on the member agencies that rely on their United Way funding to meet their own needs. Of course the sour economy was a major factor to the campaign shortfalls. Most United Way agencies around the country have suffered over the last two years as people cut back on giving to meet their own household and business situatons. However, things are turning around now, and the Sevier County United Way needed the right full-time person in charge to get things moving again. In Newman they appear to have found their man. He has been an executive for several years with the

Boy Scouts, which gets funding from United Way. He understands fundraising. He meets the public well. He has deep roots in the county. He believes in paying his civic rent. And he displays an excitement and enthusiasm that can translate into succeed as he plots his strategy for moving the campaign drive back to the heights it once enjoyed. Let’s not forget the key role Citizens National Bank has played in this. The bank has given United Way a 2,000-square-foot office in the bank’s Gatlinburg branch on Highway 321. After being practically homeless for a couple of years — at least with no permanent place in which to operate — the bank stepped up to give the agency the space it had to have. United Way has room to bring in clients and representatives of the agencies. United Way will continue to rely on volunteers to be successful. Newman

will have just one other full-time person on the payroll. All United Way agencies count on volunteers, and this year ours will really be on the hunt for people who want to help and understand the critical role the agency plays in meeting community needs. The member organizations serve some of our neediest residents — the elderly, the sick, children, victims of domestic violence, the mentally and physically challenged. A successful fall campaign is essential for many of these agencies to return to the level of service they offered before the downturn. Newman has his hands full, but he has some good ideas for righting the ship. It will take hard work, dedication and perseverance. And it will take you. Let’s resolve now to assist Newman in making United Way of Sevier County the driving force it once was and should be again.

Editor: The recent black bear incident near Laurel Falls in Great Smoky Mountains National Park highlights the challenge of managing an estimated 1,600-1,800 black bears along with approximately 9.3 million annual park visitors. There is always the issue of public safety in the park, concurrent with a mandate for protection of the park’s natural resources. Therein lies the challenge. When black bears get habituated to human food and lose their natural fear of mankind, a dangerous situation arises. When people feed bears from misguided concerns about the bear’s welfare or when they leave food unattended so the bruins can access it, the difference between a wild animal and a “nuisance” or problem bear narrows. Almost always, a nuisance bear loses, as park management policies allow for them to

Public forum be captured, relocated elsewhere in the park, or destroyed depending on the incident. Some have wondered why the bear involved in the incident around Laurel Falls couldn’t have been relocated to a national forest or to the Appalachian Bear Rescue (ABR) organization. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and other resource management agencies such as national forests do not want “nuisance” bears from the Smokies, since these bears involve a risk of possible bear/ human encounters on their own turf. And relocating bears outside the park costs money, money that is not there. Additionally, Appalachian Bear Rescue’s mission is to accept bears that are orphaned, injured or in need of other medical attention, and able to be returned to the natural environment as truly “wild” bears (ABR does not take in bears that have become accustomed to humans). So, bears that frequent human areas in the Smokies (campgrounds, picnic areas, backcountry campsites, high visitor use areas), always face the probability of being tranquilized, relocated to a remote part of the

park, or destroyed for public safety concerns. In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the nation, human/bear encounters always have the potential to occur. Bears are opportunistic feeders and people don’t always follow laws and regulations. The way to reduce the possibility of these encounters is for park visitors to follow park laws and not approach bears, not feed them, not leave food unattended, and put trash in proper receptacles. Otherwise, we will periodically see bear incidents similar to what happened recently. In those instances where bears can be relocated back into the wild, Appalachian Bear Rescue is an exemplary organization. I encourage everyone to visit their Web site at www.appalachianbearrescue.org to learn how to join their efforts, and plan to attend the upcoming Black Bear Expo at the Townsend Visitors Center on Saturday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s free. Kurt Busch, center, celebrates in victory lane after winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 auto race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday night.

Penske-backed Busch takes Charlotte flag CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — It was only fitting to have Roger Penske and Chip Ganassi cars chasing each other for a victory in a Memorial Day weekend race. That it happened at Charlotte Motor Speedway in a NASCAR race, and not at their beloved Indianapolis Motor Speedway, likely didn’t matter to either team owner. And when Kurt Busch held off Jamie McMurray over the closing laps of Sunday night’s race, it gave two of the top owners in American motorsports victories on one of the most storied days of racing. “Roger, this one is for you,” Busch said from Victory Lane. “I thought about the Ganassi car behind me. He wasn’t getting by us.” Earlier Sunday, Ganassi became the first owner to win both the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500 in the same season when Dario Franchitti won the open-wheel race. After a short celebration, Ganassi hopped a flight to North Carolina to catch the second half of NASCAR’s longest race of the season. He arrived just in time to see McMurray, the Daytona 500 winner, begin a charge

Penske, whose highest finishing driver in Indy was eighth, didn’t make the trip and watched the NASCAR race on television. The owners were treated

to a 19-lap sprint to the finish in which McMurray simply ran out of time to catch Busch, who swept the May races at Charlotte. Busch last weekend won the $1 million All-Star race. “The first person I think about is Roger Penske,”

Busch said. “To win the 600 and All-Star back to back, this is something that will be front and center in Roger’s NASCAR trophy case. I was happy to deliver.” Ganassi didn’t seem to mind the defeat.

“It was a great race, Jamie did a great job,” he smiled. “My old buddy Penske beat me tonight.” Busch, who led 252 of the 400 laps, and McMurray were the class of the field late Sunday night and it was McMurray who held

a healthy lead as the laps wound down. But a late caution for a Marcos Ambrose crash with 24 laps made it a crapshoot. McMurray led most of the leaders down pit road, but was beat back onto the track by Busch and Matt Kenseth. Jeff Gordon was the first of three cars not to pit, and restarted as the leader with 19 laps remaining. Busch blew past the three lead cars and steadily pulled away from the pack. McMurray, in a Chevrolet, quickly moved into second, but ran out of time to run down Busch, who won in a Dodge. “I don’t know about the last stop, I think we didn’t have a great stop,” McMurray said. “It just wasn’t perfect. I knew whoever came out ahead on that last pit stop between Kurt and I, if somebody didn’t screw up, that would be the race winner.” Kyle Busch rallied from a mid-race crash on pit road to finish third in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. Mark Martin finished fourth — the highest finishing Hendrick Motorsports car — and defending race winner David Reutimann was fifth for Michael Waltrip Racing.

Australian Stosur upsets Justine Henin in tourney PARIS (AP) — Needing one point for an upset win over Justine Henin at the French Open, Sam Stosur wavered, hitting a doublefault. The Australian took a deep breath and tried again. This time she launched a confident serve into the corner, setting her up for an overhead slam to seal the biggest victory of her career. Stosur sidelined Henin 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth round Monday, ending the four-time French Open champion’s streak of 24 consecutive victories at Roland Garros. Stosur’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be top-ranked

Serena Williams, who beat Shahar Peer 6-2, 6-2. Another four-time champion, Rafael Nadal, advanced by beating No. 24-seeded Thomaz Bellucci 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. No. 3-seeded Novak Djokovic eliminated the last American in the men’s draw, beating Robby Ginepri 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Henin’s defeat was her first in the tournament since 2004. She was seeded 22nd playing at Roland Garros for the first time since ending a 20-month retirement, and looked like a title contender in the early rounds. “I just wanted so much that the adventure could keep going,” she said.

But after taking a 4-3 lead in the final set against the No. 7-seeded Stosur, Henin showed signs of nerves and was betrayed by her elegant backhand. Serving at 4-all, the Belgian double-faulted to reach break point, then yanked a backhand wide. In the final game she pushed three backhands into the net, including a potential putaway on the first point. “My nerves were simply not strong enough today,” said Henin, forced to play for a fifth consecutive day because of weather interruptions. “I felt very nervous, very upset, which is normally not the way I

chances. “I knew what I had to do,” she said. “I kept going for it and I believed in myself.”

New York Yankees Nick Swisher looks on as Cleveland Indians pitcher David Huff lies is attended to after being hit by a line drive by Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez during the third inning of a baseball game Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

Cleveland Indians’ pitcher David Huff greets teammates in the dugout before their game at Yankee Stadium Sunday. Huff was removed from Saturday’s game after being hit in the head with a line drive by the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez.

Pitchers always vulnerable to line drives NEW YORK (AP) — CC Sabathia watched in horror as Cleveland Indians pitcher David Huff lay motionless on the mound after being nailed in the head by Alex Rodriguez’s line drive. “That’s always your fear as a pitcher, Sabathia said. A half-inning after Huff was carted off the field, a grounder up the middle caromed off the New York Yankees ace’s foot and rolled to the grass in right field for a hit. Perhaps ruffled by the succession of plays, Sabathia went from breezing through the Indians’ limp lineup to losing the strike zone and giving up

three runs in the inning. Working 60 feet, 6 inches from home plate, where a batter can send balls screaming toward the mound at speeds in excess of 100 mph, the pitcher might be the most vulnerable player on the field. Pitchers are rarely hit in the head, but when it happens it unfolds in a terrifying instant. “You never hear a baseball stadium that quiet, said Pirates right-hander Chris Jakubauskas, struck near the ear by Lance Berkman’s liner April 25 and still out with a concussion. “When you can hear a pin drop in a stadium, it’s usually not a good

thing. Several hours after being rushed to the hospital strapped to a board and wearing a neck brace, Huff returned to Yankee Stadium and was seen laughing in the clubhouse. He hopes to make his next start. Others have not been so lucky. Last season, the Dodgers lost Hiroki Kuroda for several weeks with a concussion and San Francisco Giants rookie Joe Martinez was out four months after Mike Cameron’s liner gave the righty a concussion and three hairline fractures in his skull. In 2000, Boston righty Bryce

Florie’s vision was impaired when he was tagged in the right eye. He tried to make a comeback the next season but never succeeded as a big league pitcher again. Herb Score, the Indians’ American League Rookie of Year winner in 1955, never fulfilled his promise after being hit by a shot off the bat of a New York Yankee that broke several bones in his face in 1957. Fearful of getting hit again, Score altered his motion and was never the same. “If you think it’s going to be difficult to come back, I don’t think you’ll ever be able to come back, Kuroda said Saturday

night. Minnesota’s Nick Blackburn, who was struck in the face by a drive off Bobby Abreu’s bat in 2008, said the key to getting back on the mound is having a short memory. “You can’t really go out and be scared and be worried and thinking about that, Blackburn said in Minneapolis after Huff was hit. “But it’s not easy to not think about it. Especially after I got hit, it was always in the back of my mind. You can’t let that be your main focus or you won’t be able to do your job. He added: “The more you get out there, the easier it gets.

Deepwater mystery: Oil’s loose in the Gulf NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Streaming video of oil pouring from the seafloor and images of dead, crude-soaked birds serve as visual bookends to the natural calamity unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico. But independent scientists and government officials say another disaster is playing out in slow motion — and out of public view — in the mysterious depths between the gusher and the coast, a world inhabited by sperm whales, gigantic jellyfish and diminutive plankton. More than a month after the BP PLC spill began, the disaster’s dimensions have come into sharper focus with government

estimates that more than 18 million gallons of oil — and possibly 40 million gallons — has already poured from the leaking well, eclipsing the 11 million gallons released during the Exxon Valdez spill. “Every fish and invertebrate contacting the oil is probably dying. I have no doubt about that,” said Prosanta Chakrabarty, a Louisiana State University fish biologist. The deep Gulf is an area where light can’t penetrate and researchers rarely venture. Yet what happens there can ripple across the food chain. Every night the denizens of the deep make forays to shallower

food chain suffer. Larger fish are more resilient, but not immune to the toxic effects of oil. The Gulf’s largest spill was in 1979, when the Ixtoc I platform off Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula blew up and released 140 million gallons of oil. But that was in relatively shallow waters — about 160 feet deep — and much of the oil stayed on the surface where it broke down and became less toxic by the time it reached the Texas coast. Since BP’s Deepwater Horizon exploded and sank more than five weeks ago, scientists said they have found at least two sprawling underwater plumes of what appears to be oil, each hun-

A plume reported last week by a team from the University of South Florida, was headed toward the continental shelf off the Alabama coastline, waters thick with fish and other marine life. On Sunday, BP’s CEO Tony Hayward disputed the existence of the plumes, saying testing by the company showed no evidence that oil was being suspended in large masses underwater. Hayward said oil’s natural tendency is to rise to the surface, and any oil found underwater was in the process of working its way up.

In turn, several species closest to the surface — including red snapper, shrimp and menhaden — help drive the Gulf Coast fishing industry. Others such as marlin, cobia and yellowfin tuna sit atop the food chain and are chased by the Gulf’s charter fishing fleet. Many of those species are now in their annual spawning seasons. Eggs exposed to oil would quickly perish. Those that survived to hatch could starve if the plankton at the base of the

Advice

Wife upset with husband who makes hurtful comments

Zits

Beetle Bailey

Dear Annie: I have been married for 35 years to a man who, at any moment, will bring up things from our past that are very hurtful to me. And he knows exactly what he is doing. Two weeks ago, he threw something in my face that goes back to before we were married. He had loaned me a small amount of money — less than $100. At the time, I was a single mom working a full-time job without the benefit of child support from my ex-husband. I guess I never paid him back. I had totally forgotten about it and couldn’t believe he remembered — and apparently is still upset about it. We are now the parents of three grown children. On the outside, we appear to be the perfect couple, but his continual badgering has left me feeling like a knife is being stuck in my heart. He knows how I feel about this. The only time he stops is if I start to cry. Why does he do this? — Hurt in the Midwest Dear Hurt: Has your husband always been like this, or is it a fairly recent development? The fact that he hangs on to these grudges and uses them to make you cry is a form of bullying and an effort to exert control. If this reflects a change in his personality within the past few years, he may have a neurological problem that requires medical attention. Unfortunately, if it goes back 35 years, it will be difficult to modify his behavior, especially if he isn’t willing. It is not, however, impossible. Get some counseling — on your own if he won’t go with you — and learn

how to respond in a more productive way. Dear Annie: Why do people feel the need to offer advice that is unsolicited and unwanted? Isn’t that completely out of line? A friend of mine sends me e-mails telling me that nearly everything I do is wrong. I have not asked this person for their opinion. I am not hurting or offending anyone, and I do not welcome the criticism or want her input. Ultimately, it is insulting. Why does she know better than I do? If someone asks for advice or an opinion, it is OK to give it. Otherwise, please tell people to tread lightly. You never know when a foot will be inserted in the mouth or feelings will be hurt. — Ft. Wayne, Ind. Dear Indiana: Being in the advice business, we know how useless it is to direct our suggestions to someone who hasn’t asked for our help. Unsolicited advice is often resented. There is no reason you cannot delete this person’s e-mails unread or, at the very least, not respond to the parts that are insulting. (On the other hand, when it’s your motherin-law, sometimes it’s best to simply turn a deaf ear.) Dear Annie: You were way off base in your response to “Devastated and Frustrated,” whose

son and daughter-in-law didn’t invite her to her grandchild’s birthday party because the ex-husband and his fifth wife were there. She’s also not allowed to stop by and visit without calling. Now she’s been cut off entirely because she told her daughter-in-law’s aunt on Facebook to MYOB. That woman has a right to see her bloodrelated offspring. That daughter-in-law needs to learn her place, and that is to respect her son’s grandmother. That fifth wife has no business being at a birthday party. Someone needs to come down on that son and daughter-in-law with a lead balloon. You should have told her how to access her grandparents’ rights. — Angry in Connecticut Dear Angry: Grandparents’ rights are not recognized in every state, and there are often restrictions. The fact that “Devastated” ought to be able to see her grandchildren doesn’t mean she will. We’ll say it again: The best way to resolve the problem is for Mom to find a way to get along with her daughter-in-law.
