SEVIERVILLE — The Sevier County School Board of Education unanimously approved a 32-acre tract of land off of Highway 66 in Kodak as the site for the new Northview Academy on Monday. Estimated cost for the school, which will be located between Swaggerty Sausage Company and A&W Concrete, is $3.8 million. Board member Stanley Moore made a motion to approve the site. “Our no. 1 concern is to ease the overcrowding at Sevier County High School,” said Jack Parton, director of schools. “It’s up to 1,800 students in a building that was built for 1,200 students. Local men and women serving with the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment should be home from Iraq by September at the latest. The regiment was due back in December, but Maj. Gen. Max Hutson, the state’s adjutant general, announced Monday that it is coming home early. About 250 members of the regiment, which includes more than 3,400 soldiers from throughout Tennessee, are already in Camp Shelby, Miss., for demobilization and are due back in state Wednesday. The 278th ACR includes soldiers from the Pigeon Forge armory, and other locals who serve with the guard are based at other local armories. The first units to return include soldiers from armories in Maryville, McKenzie and Henderson. More arrival times will be announced as they become available, but officials said the latest they should arrive at Camp Shelby is the end of August. “In order to meet the National Command Authorities time line of less

Fireflies’ mating ritual Well-deserved break a flash for park tourism By JEFF FARRELL Staff Writer NATIONAL PARK — More than 1,000 people per night came to Elkmont this year to see the synchronous fireflies perform their mating ritual. The lightning bugs take 2 years to reach adulthood, but last only 21 days as adults, and during that they use their flashing displays of light to attract mates. The synchronous fireflies — Photinous carolinus — are the only species in America whose individuals can synchronize their flashing light patterns, making for a light show that’s become popular with park visitors, especially over the last few years. The peak time for watching them is typically a two-week period in June. The park started setting up times where visitors are ferried to Elkmont in 2005, to alleviate traffic congestion in the area, which is now closed to See tourism, Page A4

Robinson pushing for a new Forge wastewater plant By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer PIGEON FORGE — As city officials approve the budget for the coming fiscal year, at least one of their number thinks not enough is being done
on building a new wastewater plant, something everyone agrees is crucial for the city’s future. Already the current sewage treatment facility is near capacity, a position it’s been in for years, with city leaders putting conditions on requests
from large developments looking to tie onto the system and rejecting annexation requests at least in part on those grounds. With the potential of a moratorium on new building looming if things get too tight and a state requirement that
the effluent from a new facility be pumped out to the French Broad River rather than the Little Pigeon River, there’s a real crunch on to get moving on the project. City Commissioner Randal Robinson says he doesn’t think other lead-
ers are heeding the direness of the situation, a claim they deny but he continues to hammer on. Robinson’s questions at times have been deferred, with the advice that he raise them again when See wastewater, Page A4

Youth charged with aggravated battery By JEFF FARRELL Staff Writer SEVIER COUNTY — A tip that a juvenile had a handgun that didn’t belong to him led deputies to charge the 16-year-old with aggravated burglary. Sheriff Ron Seals said his department started an investigation May 29 after a homeowner on Mutton Hollow Road reported several items
had been during after a break-in. Sunday, deputies received a phone call saying that a juvenile on the same road was in possession of a stolen handgun. When deputies went to the juvenile’s house he attempted to flee, but he was apprehended a short time later, Seals said. They found the weapon, along with other items allegedly taken in the break-in, in possession of the youth.
He now faces the aggravated burglary charge, and is being held at the Sevier County Juvenile Detention Center until a hearing date can be set. The juvenile’s name was not released. Anyone with additional information on the crime should call Detective Stephanie Hodges at 4281899. n jfarrell@themountainpress.com

Jackson doc to keep license in California
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A doctor charged in Michael Jackson’s death will keep his California medical license after a judge ruled Monday he didn’t have the authority to revoke it. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor declined a request by California authorities to suspend the ability of Dr. Conrad Murray to practice medicine in the state. Pastor said there were no circumstances that warranted revisiting the conditions of Murray’s bail. California authorities have sought the suspension since Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in February. Murray is accused of giving the pop star a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol last June. He has pleaded not guilty. He showed no reaction to Pastor’s ruling‘.

WASHINGTON — For decades after gunmen shot down his brothers, Sen. Edward Kennedy lived under constant assassination threats of his own, sometimes chillingly specific, as he became a target for extremist rage, previously private FBI documents disclosed Monday. Five years after President John F. Kennedy was killed and shortly after Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was shot, one letter warned that the third brother was next: “Ted Kennedy number three to be assassinated on Oct. 25, 1968. he’s never given a copy of that to anyone, to my knowledge, she said. Fellow commissioners have denied hearing any such offer from any of the owners of the properties being considered and doubt such a cheap price could be had from any. Further, they bristle at the claim nothing is being done to move forward with the wastewater plant, insisting efforts are constant and Robinson either ignores or misunderstands them. They cite information and studies of the sites in consideration from engineers who have been working on the project for years. As that information has been prepared, the bigger work of finding ways to fund an effort that the engineers have estimated will likely run a tab of $45 million or more. That number’s higher than the city’s entire budget for this year and is likely insurmountable without some outside help, Mayor Keith Whaley has said. “There’s no way a city of 4,000 or 5,000 residents is going to pay for a $45 million wastewater plant to serve 10 million tourists, Whaley said. “We have got to find some funding sources or we’re not going to be able to do it. Our current revenues can’t cover that. That has led officials like Teaster and Assistant City Manager Eric Brackins to consider alternatives such as federal stimulus money, state revolving loan awards and even congressional earmarks. Unfortunately, none of the billions spent on infrastructure out of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act went to the project, the city’s application was beaten out by projects deemed “more deserving for the state money and the push for cash from Washington was blown out of the water by a fit of fat cutting. “We were told it was in the proposal submitted by one of our congressmen, but when all the Tennessee Republican lawmakers made a pledge not to make any earmarks this year, he had to take it out, Teaster told the group in May. “We’ll have to wait until next year if we want to try that route again.

traffic at night during the peak season. “It’s interesting how this activity has grown over the years, said Nancy Gray, spokesperson for the park. “Everybody started catching on that the national park had the synchronous fireflies and I think that publicity and word of mouth had taken hold probably a decade ago. That word had started to grow in the late 1990s, she said, and by 2005 it had reached the point where they decided to start a pilot program for taking people up to the site. They had hundreds of cars driving to the Little River trail head, which is a day use area, she said, and the small parking area couldn’t hold the number of cars coming to see the beetles. It was worse when everyone tried to leave at night, she said, and it was becoming a problem and a hazard for the visitors. So, they started using trolleys from the Gatlinburg to carry people from the Sugarlands Visitor Center to Elkmont. When they started doing it in 2005, they had a total of 8,000 people over a 14-day period. This year, the service lasted nine days,
but had more than 11,000 people show up, according to estimates. They’ve already got so many people coming that they have to limit parking for the vents to the visitors center, she said. Even then, they had many people showing up well before the first trolley came to the parking area. There seem to be some visitors, she said, who don’t know just how late the fireflies start their shows. They wait until it’s gotten pretty dark, so it’s typically around 9:45 or 10 p.m. before they really get started, she explained. The park service continues to tweak the program, she said, but she credited the volunteers and staff who worked extra hours to organize the transportation and logistics for the event. It wouldn’t be possible, either, she said, without the city of Gatlinburg allowing the park to use its trolleys for transportation. While they’ll continue to look for ways to improve the experience, Gray said she thought most of the visitors enjoyed the trip. “I think for the most part everybody had a great experience, she said. “I can say that this year it was so intense the flashing behavior was really wonderful. n jfarrell@themountainpress.com
the group was working on the budget since they deal with allocations. Robinson pointed out the contradiction during recent budget work sessions when he was told some of his questions should again wait because the group needed to get through the fiscal documents so the city doesn’t have to go into emergency mode and pass a late financial plan. “I’ve been told I should bring these up at budget time, but now that it’s budget time I’ve been told we don’t have time to talk about it, Robinson said during one meeting. Specifically, Robinson is concerned city leaders aren’t working urgently enough to satisfy the growing need for a new wastewater facility, pointing out there aren’t funds set aside in the new budget for any new work on the matter. “I feel like this isn’t being taken seriously enough, Robinson has cautioned. “We need to get somewhere on this because this is crucial. To me it seems like we’re not doing anything on this. Robinson has pushed several ideas of ways to get the project moving, from issuing bonds to moving forward on purchase of property for the facility. The city has been considering for several years three sites, with the majority of the discussion centering on a large tract on River Divide Road. The price for that land has been given at several million, though no official negotiations to nail down a price have been held, city attorney Jim Gass has said. However, city officials like the site because it has plenty of space for expansion, provides a clean route for running an output pipe to the French Broad and also could offer land for other activities, including recreational fields. Robinson has claimed in recent work sessions he has a letter from the owners of another piece of property under consideration offering their land for $1 million if the city’s interested. He has declined to publicly release n dhodges@themountainpress.com the name of the author of the letter and, though he promised to give copies of the document to other For Tickets city leaders, City Manager Earlene Teaster reported Monday that hasn’t happened yet. “I’ve never seen it and Call:

Blagojevich aide tells of pressuring track owner CHICAGO (AP) — A former top aide testified at Rod Blagojevich’s corruption trial Monday that the ousted governor pressed him to collect a $100,000 campaign contribution from a racetrack owner while he delayed signing legislation that would send millions of dollars into the coffers of the racing industry. In his grueling third day on the stand, a haggard-looking Alonzo Monk admitted that he was under so much pressure from the governor to get the campaign money and the racetrack owner to get the bill signed that he repeatedly lied to make it sound as if he was doing more than he was for both sides. “I wanted them to think I was more aggressive than I was, said Monk, who went from being Blagojevich’s chief of staff to becoming a lobbyist for the racetrack industry and others. Monk, Blagojevich’s former law school roommate, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to pressure the racetrack owner and is testifying in hopes getting a lighter sentence. As he began cross-examining Monk, Blagojevich’s attorney Sam Adam Jr. asked him about his early days with Blagojevich when the two of them were law students at Pepperdine University in California.

Obama optimistic about Gulf By ERICA WERNER Associated Press Writer THEODORE, Ala. — In a newly optimistic tone, President Barack Obama promised Monday that “things are going to return to normal along the stricken Gulf Coast and the region’s fouled waters will be in even better shape than before the catastrophic BP oil spill. He declared Gulf seafood safe to eat and said his administration is redoubling inspections and monitoring to make sure it stays that way. And his White House said Monday it had wrested apparent agreement from BP PLC to set up an independent, multibillion-dollar compensation fund for people and businesses suffering from the spill’s effects. He declared, “I am confident that we’re going to be able to leave the Gulf Coast in better shape than it was before. That pledge was reminiscent of George W. Bush’s promise to rebuild the region “even better and stronger than before Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Bush could not make good on that promise, and Obama did not spell out how he would

new building will take care of us for the next 8-10 years — this is just a ‘guesstimate.’ Appraised cost of the land, owned by M&A Enterprises Inc., is $140,000 per acre. The selling price was $120,000 per acre and the land purchase was $3.8 million. There is no cost for site preparation, with water, gas, sewer and other utilities already in place. Northview Academy will include grades 7-12. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2011, and

President Barack Obama speaks during a visit to the Theodore Staging Facility in Theodore, Ala., on Monday. fulfill his. With Obama hoping to convince a frightened Gulf Coast and a skeptical nation that he is in command, he is marshaling the tools at a president’s disposal: a two-day visit via Air Force One, helicopter and boat in the region, a prime-time
speech Tuesday night from the symbolically important stage of the Oval Office and a face-toface White House showdown Wednesday with the executives of the oil company that leased the rig that exploded April 20 and led to the leak of millions of gallons of coast-
devastating crude. From an enormous waterside staging facility here, one of 17 where cleanup crews ready themselves and equipment to attack the spill, Obama mixed his optimism about the ultimate result with warnings that the recovery could take a while.
Phase 1 of the project — including classrooms and core facilities, library, cafeteria and administration offices — is expected to be completed in May 2013. Classes will begin in 2013 with grades 7-9 and culminate with the first graduating class in 2017. “From what we understand, a large growth (of students) is going to be coming from the north part of the county, Parton said. The board also reviewed two other tracts of land. Tract 1, which was 98 acres adjacent to Catlettsburg Elementary School and owned by Buckingham LP
and W.T. Atchley Et. Al, would have cost $3.6 million with a $5.2 million site prep. Tract 3, which was 85 acres adjacent to Northview Elementary School and Northview Middle School and owned by Southview Development and Northside Properties, would have cost $3.4 million with site prep costing $8.1 million (due to many closed depressions, or sinkholes). The board voted to apply for the Qualified School Construction Bond Program, requesting the Tennessee State School Bond Authority for a loan of $14.7 million, the amount for which Sevier
County is eligible. If approved, the Local Education Agency agrees to use 100 percent of the proceeds of the loan for “qualified construction, rehabilitation or repair of a public school facility; or for the acquisition of land on which such a facility is to be constructed with part of the proceeds of such issue; or for equipment to be used in connection with the portion of the facility being constructed, rehabilitated or repaired with proceeds. The first round of candidates for the grant will be announced on July 7.

State cutting teen driving deaths NASHVILLE (AP) — A state official says Tennessee has made some headway in reducing traffic fatalities among teens. Phillip Doss, director of the state’s Offices of Research and Educational Accountability, commented as a national campaign pushes for 16 as the minimum driving age. In Tennessee, teens can apply for a learner’s permit six months after their 15th birthday. They can be licensed at 16 with restrictions. According to The
Tennessean newspaper, the state ranked sixth in the nation for fatal crashes involving teen drivers in a national study by Allstate Insurance in 2008. A recent state study of the effectiveness of Tennessee’s graduated driver’s license law concluded that states with higher minimum driving ages have lower rates of teen driving-related accidents and deaths. “This is a major public health problem,” said Jacqueline Gillan, vice

Agriculture monopolies cause harm By Timothy A. Wise Guest columnist Has Big Ag gotten too big? And do consumers really benefit from the low prices farmers earn for selling livestock and grain to food giants like Cargill, Smithfield, and Tyson? After two decades standing idly by while those companies and seed behemoth Monsanto swallowed their competitors, a new Department of Justice anti-trust team is vowing to bust up companies that have gotten so big they’re thwarting competition. And a new sheriff is taking the issue to the people. In the first of five public hearings, Justice took its anti-trust rodeo to Ankeny, Iowa. The unprecedented public process has struck a nerve in the heartland, where family farmers and independent ranchers have watched as corporate mergers and takeovers left them with fewer buyers for their crops and animals, and fewer suppliers of basic inputs like seeds and fertilizer. Justice received more than 15,000 public comments before the hearings, and some 800 farmers jammed the community college auditorium in Ankeny on March 12, for a session that took aim at Monsanto and the seed conglomerates. Monsanto is a textbook case of monopoly selling power. It controls seeds globally, including an estimated 93 percent of the U.S. soybean seed market. U.S. seed prices overall have risen an astounding 146 percent since 1999, and 64 percent in just the last three years. An Iowa grain farmer told the crowd that he had no choice but to buy Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds, and that their rising prices eroded any gains he gets from higher output. Other farmers told of legal threats from Monsanto for planting its patented seeds without a license. These hearings are also highlighting a more insidious type of monopoly power: the kind that drives down farm prices. “When agribusiness purchasing power is reduced to a small number of companies, does that create such an unlevel playing field that it compels those in the middle to either get bigger or get out?” asked U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack in Iowa. U.S. anti-trust law has always recognized buyer power as an anti-competitive practice, but authorities have rarely taken the issue seriously when reviewing the agribusiness mergers that in the last two decades have placed the majority of the world’s food in the hands of a small number of corporations. Wal-Mart and other ever-larger supermarket chains force down prices from their giant suppliers, which in turn demand rock-bottom prices from theirs. Farmers are at the bottom of this food chain. This race to the bottom squeezes the life out of farms, particularly the smallest farms. And it hurts rural communities not just by lowering farm prices, but by forcing down wages for agricultural laborers, packing workers, and others in the food industry. The issue is particularly urgent for independent livestock farmers, who have seen the meat conglomerates gobble each other up with the government blessing the carnage. The Justice Department did a pro-forma investigation of pork giant Smithfield’s 2007 takeover of Premium Standard Farms, a merger that fattened the largest U.S. hog producer and pork packer by feeding it the country’s second-largest producer and sixthlargest packer. In the Southeast, the merger left 2,500 independent hog producers with just one regional buyer. Smithfield could say to the hog farmers who weren’t under contract to the company: Here’s the price and, if you don’t like it, good luck selling your hogs. Despite Agriculture Department studies showing that Smithfield already wielded excessive buyer power in the region even before the merger, Bush-era Justice officials ruled that “the merged firm is not likely to harm competition, consumers or farmers.” Bon appétit, Smithfield. Is there a new anti-trust sheriff in town? Let’s hope so. Our farmers shouldn’t be gouged by input suppliers and buyers. Small businesses shouldn’t be run out of town. Consumers shouldn’t see grocery prices go up while farm prices go down, as they have with dairy products. By putting the teeth back in anti-trust enforcement, Obama can strike a blow for free and fair capitalist competition. The government can’t keep standing idly by as enormous agricultural monopolies squeeze the lifeblood out of the nation’s farmers by dictating prices that don’t cover their costs. We just can’t afford that kind of cheap food. — Timothy Wise is the policy research director at the Global Development and Environment Institute at Tufts University.

Some imagination
Dolly Parton’s book program has introduced reading to millions We may never be able to quantify the impact of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library on the children of Tennessee and the rest of the country. Since the program started in 1996, millions of books have been given away, with children from newborn to age 5 getting books regularly. Last week Dolly Parton gave away the 25 millionth book. The program that began modestly in East Tennessee has spread to hundreds of counties throughout the United States as well as three countries. Kumar Stewart of Birmingham, Ala., received book No. 25,000,000 from Parton herself as she kicked off KidsFest at Dollywood. Parton launched Imagination Library
in 1996 to benefit the children of Sevier County. She wanted to spread a love of reading among the county’s preschool children and their families. She, like so many others who worry our children are not reading enough, wanted kids to be excited about books. She wanted every child to have books regardless of their family’s income. She decided to mail a new, age-appropriate book to every child under 5 in Sevier County. The first book is always the classic “The Little Engine That Could.” Books keep coming until the child turns 5. As word of Imagination Library spread, Parton’s foundation asked a panel of experts to select just the right
books and got Penguin Group USA to be the exclusive publisher for the Imagination Library. In March 2000 she stood at the podium of The National Press Club in Washington and revealed the plan for other communities to provide the Imagination Library to their children. The program has spread, and Dolly Parton is the big reason why. Children have books in their home — you’d be surprised how many didn’t before this program — and parents can read to and with their kids. It’s a good feeling to know it all started right here in Sevier County, her home county. The enormous success emanated from our back door to the world.
Political view
Public forum New library offers ways for people to provide assistance
Editor: When, almost eight years ago, Chair Janet King of the Library Board and K.C. Williams, our librarian, asked for the creation of a supporting, non-profit foundation, few of us had any idea how much time and effort would be required to plan, finance and build a facility that, together with the other libraries in the county, met state square footage standards for a county with our population. But, inspired by the adage that “all great communities have great libraries” and encouraged by the support of county and city government, a host of volunteers committed time, talent and treasure (about 40 percent of the total cost was donated by very generous people in our area) to the cause. The end result, a state of the art structure at an accessible location, has received a great deal of praise, but has not been immune from modest criticism: “It’s too nice,” some say, which is both the ultimate compliment and the ultimate complaint.
Indeed, we do have a nice, even beautiful facility and, furthermore, it’s also quite large. But people like to hang out in nice places, and I can think of few better places for my grandchildren (and those of my friends and neighbors in Sevier County) to spend their time than a public library. Yes, there are some empty shelves, but it’s been about 45 years since the county last built a main branch, so I compliment the leadership demonstrated by local governmental officials for planning for the future. The county will save in the long run, and available space is a precious commodity. The new library is approximately 7.5 times the size of the old facility (imagine moving family and furniture from a 700-square-foot apartment into a 5,000square-foot home). While it will take time to adapt, the experience should be pleasureful. Meanwhile, there are some real opportunities for people who love libraries to help. First, the foundation will continue, more as a “friends” organization, raising funds annually and offering to add bells and whistles to basic operations — perhaps you
can become a friend? Second, purchase a mosaic tile for the terrific new exhibit which will trace our county history. Third, our librarian has asked the county to fund a volunteer coordinator, as Blount County did with its new library, to take advantage of people who have the ability and the time to contribute to basic operations — so, volunteer some of your time. Finally, and as correctly pointed out by letter appearing in Sunday’s edition, there is (and always will be) a need for quality circulation materials (books, books on tape, movies, and other such items); keeping the library relevant as time and technology changes will always be a challenge. The bottom line is, that everyone can help shape our future by somehow, some way investing in our new library. To paraphrase a former president, ask not what your library can do for you, ask what you can do for the library — to help make operations live up to our remarkable facility. Gary Wade Sevierville

Thomas grand slam lifts Smokies to 1 1/2 game lead SEVIERVILLE – It may have only been his second home run of the year, but Tony Thomas’ grand slam Sunday might prove to be the biggest of the season’s first half for the Tennessee Smokies. His blast off Diamond Jaxx reliever Luis Munoz in the seventh inning erased a tworun deficit and powered the Smokies to a 7-5 win over West Tenn in front of 3,228 at Smokies Park. The win puts the Smokies back in front of the Diamond Jaxx by 1 1/2 games, with only six games to go in the season’s first half. Hitting .360 during the Smokies’ current 10-game homestand, Thomas was the guy Tennessee wanted at the plate in two crucial situations Sunday. Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth and with Josh Vitters on first, Thomas lined Steven Hensley’s pitch to the gap in right-center to bring Vitters home and put Tennessee up on the board. Thomas would score himself on a Marwin Gonzalez RBI single off Hensley
Tony Thomas
(6-3) to tie the game at two. After West Tenn regained the lead in the seventh with two runs off Tennessee reliever Ryan Buchter to go up 4-2, Thomas again came to the plate representing the Smokies’ best chance to put a dent in the Diamond Jaxx lead. He did that and then some, blasting Munoz’s pitch over the left-field wall to give the Smokies their first lead of the game at 6-4. Tennessee’s offense would score an insurance run in the eighth on a Matt Spencer RBI single to go up 7-4, and then turn over the game to their bullpen in the ninth. Having closed out the eighth by striking out two of the three
hitters he faced, Smokies reliever David Cales looked to close out the Diamond Jaxx in the ninth. West Tenn’s Jeff Dominguez had other ideas, belting a Cales pitch over the right-field wall to cut Tennessee’s lead to 7-5. Tennessee manager Bill Dancy summoned Luke Sommer (S, 2), who retired all three batters he faced to secure the win. While getting the no-decision, Tennessee starter Chris Carpenter pitched well for the home team. He allowed only two runs on four hits, striking out five and walking three. Buchter (4-0) picked up the win. mpsports@themountainpress.com

Smokies’ Chris Carpenter tabbed SL’s Pitcher of the Week SEVIERVILLE – Tennessee Smokies pitcher Chris Carpenter was named today by the Southern League as its Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 7-13. The award is Carpenter’s first of the season, second for the Smokies’ pitching staff, and fourth league award for the Smokies in 2010. Carpenter’s two starts this past week played a key role in the Smokies’ stay atop the Southern League North Division. Last Tuesday, he held Huntsville scoreless over 6 1/3 innings in Tennessee’s 3-0 win,
striking out six. And while not factoring in Sunday’s decision against West Tenn, Carpenter kept the Smokies in the game as he allowed only two runs. Tennessee would eventually win 7-5. On the year, Carpenter is 5-2 with a 3.40 ERA. Longhorns decline Pac-10’s offer, will stay in Big 12 AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas says it is staying in the Big 12. Shortly after Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott confirmed to The Associated Press in an e-mail that the University of Texas had declined an invitation to join his conference, the Longhorns put out a statement saying they would “continue competing in the Big 12.” University president William Powers Jr. wouldn’t give any details about why the school decided to stay put when asked by the AP. Texas has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday morning. A person with direct knowledge of discussions among the Big 12’s remaining members said earlier in the day that the University of Texas would be clear to set up its own TV network and keep all proceeds in exchange for remaining in the Big 12. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity, stopped short of flatly predicting
“Everybody is feeling much more confident the Big 12 is going to survive. Everybody’s going to be making more money.” Unnamed AP source
the league would survive, adding that details were still being worked out. “Something could still happen,” the person said Monday afternoon. The fate of the conference born in 1996 when the Big 8 merged with four members of the Southwest Conference has been at risk for days, and Texas emerged as the key to the Big 12’s survival when Nebraska (Big Ten) and Colorado (Pac-10) decided to leave over the next two years. The Pac-10 has courted Texas and other Big 12 South Division schools, while Texas A&M reportedly expressed interest in going to the Southeastern Conference
barring a better offer. Both Texas and Texas A&M are now leaning toward staying in the Big 12, the person told the AP. “Everybody is feeling much more confident the Big 12 is going to survive,” the person said. “Everybody’s going to be making more money.” Big 12 officials have told member schools that the loss of the Denver television market and Nebraska would not weaken the league’s negotiating position with TV networks as much as feared, the person said. Texas, the biggest and most lucrative of the Big 12 members, has been the pied piper in the
league discussions, with other schools seemingly ready to line up behind the Longhorns once the school decides where it wants its cash cow football program to compete. Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe has reportedly told his remaining members that new television deals with a 10-team league would give league revenues a huge boost. Beebe did not return messages seeking comment Monday. Texas A&M has represented another wild card, with school officials meeting with Pac-10 and SEC officials in recent days. If the Aggies are serious about leaving for the SEC, no matter what Texas and the others decide, would that prompt the Longhorns, Sooners and the rest to decide the Big 12 is not worth saving with only nine members? Texas A&M regent Gene Stallings said Monday he wants the Big 12 to survive and would
vote to keep the Aggies in the league if they don’t get a much better offer. Stallings told The Associated Press that keeping the Big 12 together “would tickle me to death.” Stallings coached Alabama to a football national championship in 1992. He has said that if Texas A&M does move, he’d rather see the Aggies go to the SEC than the Pac-10, but his comments Monday suggested that would be a last resort. Regents at Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have scheduled meetings Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss conference allegiances. Stallings says he expects Texas A&M regents to meet later this week. more effective team leader in his fifth NFL season. Young said the person who provoked him did make a downward Longhorns sign that was disrespectful. He said more went on, but he wouldn’t go into any further details. Asked what would happen if he broke his throwing hand with a punch, Young said it wasn’t a punch but a push. Despite his poor decision, Young said he has matured. He said he is handling this situation differently than when he was injured in the 2008 season opener. During that game he had been booed after being intercepted twice and apparently refused to go back into the game before being hurt. The next day police were called to search for him when his mother worried about how he was
handling the injury. He lost his starting job to Kerry Collins after the injury, and the Titans went 13-3 with Young on the bench. “I didn’t know how to handle it at first. I’m more accustomed to it now. I made my mistake. I’m owning up to my mistake,” Young said. His teammates support Young, but some had not seen the video of the incident. Fullback Ahmard Hall said Texas Longhorns often are hassled by Oklahoma fans when visiting Dallas. Fisher is disappointed how Young handled the situation. The coach had
to discuss the incident Sunday night trying to raise money for charity, including Nashville flood victims. “He’s walking on his own on this one,” Fisher said. “This was a decision he made. It was not a good decision. He’s not one that typically does this, but he put himself in a bad situation and we just move on.” Notes: Tulloch faced a midnight deadline to sign his $2.5 million tender or have his offer trimmed to $588,000, 110 percent of his pay last season. Fisher said he doesn’t know yet if that means the starting middle linebacker will return.

Dear Annie: I’m 35, a loving family man and a successful teacher who can’t get over my childhood. When I was young, I lived with constant anxiety due to my mother’s moods. Some days, she would be gentle and caring, but other days, I would wake up to her screaming and tearing apart the house. She would become violent and abusive and always make it my fault. No matter what I did, it wasn’t good enough for her. My father was weak willed, and his work kept him away constantly, so he never helped me. When he was home, he, too, suffered her abuse, but when things got too hard to take, he would just leave the house and come back later. As I grew into my teens, my mother became more violent, punching and slapping me and daring me to strike her back. I never once raised a hand against her, and after a while, her hits stopped hurting. In fact, she once fractured her own wrist and broke a finger while slapping me. The hospital suspected I abused her. She blamed me for the cast she wore and brought it up constantly. Of course, my parents acted so kind and caring in public that no one would have believed how they were in private. During my freshman year of college, my mother had a stroke and died. By then, my father had developed early dementia and spent the rest of his life in a special care home. I was on my own. I no longer speak to any relatives because they constantly told me what great parents I had. I now find myself reliving childhood moments in the middle
of the night. I fantasize about beating my mother. I have never told anyone, but sometimes my wife asks why I clench my fists. I do not attend church and cannot afford counseling. I’m not sure I could admit my feelings to anyone. I had to force myself to write this. Is there a way to let the past go? -- Texas Dear Texas: Our hearts are breaking for the little boy who had to live with a mother who was undoubtedly bipolar and a father who repeatedly abandoned him so he could escape the abuse. You are a testimonial to the resilience of the human spirit. There are people who can put the past behind them by confiding in a spouse or close friend, but if that is not possible, please reconsider talking to a professional, in person, online or over the phone. There are many affordable places. Start with your local hospitals, university psychology departments and graduate school counseling departments; United Way and the YMCA; The Samaritan Institute (samaritaninstitute. org) at 2696 S. Colorado Blvd., Suite 380, Denver, CO 80222; and the Abraham Low Self-Help Systems at lowselfhelpsystems.org, 1-866-2210302. Dear Annie: My dad has started to smoke pipes, and I am worried. His dentist told him to stop because of gum cancer. He says he doesn’t inhale so he can’t get

addicted or develop gum cancer. How can I get him to stop? Can he get some sort of cancer by smoking pipes? -- Concerned Kid in Kansas Dear Kansas: According to the American Cancer Society, pipe smokers have an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and chronic lung disease, along with dying from cancers of the lung, throat, esophagus, larynx, pancreas, and colon and rectum. However, you cannot stop your father from puffing away if he refuses. Give him the information, tell him you love him, and then try to steer clear when he’s smoking. Dear Annie: “Grieving in the Midwest” said her 33-year-old daughter-in-law recently died from a drug overdose and her son already has a new girlfriend. Maybe I watch too many crime dramas, but when a young woman in a rocky marriage dies of a drug overdose, the husband is a prime murder suspect. -- Suspicious in Kentucky Dear Kentucky: Yes, that struck us, too, but we’re not the police, and we assume if there was something to investigate, they would have done so. Crews find 20th flood victim floating in Little Missouri River LANGLEY, Ark. (AP) — Crews on Monday found a 20th victim of a flash flood that swept through a popular campground, but they continued searching because authorities don’t know if the body belonged to the last person thought to be missing. State police declined to identify the victim, who was found floating in the Little Missouri River. But Capt. Mike Fletcher said searchers weren’t sure if the body matched the description of the last person they were looking for. Dozens of people were feared missing after the pre-dawn Friday flood, but authorities on Sunday narrowed their search to just one person known to have been camping at the Albert Pike Recreation Area. They said they believe many others first feared missing were camping in other parts of the state, without cell phone coverage. A heavy storm sent a wall of water rushing down the river while most camp-
ers were sleeping, leaving them scrambling in the dark for safety amid the area’s steep terrain. Floodwaters rose up to 8 feet per hour, pouring through the remote valley with such force that they peeled asphalt from roads. Cabins along the river banks were severely damaged, and mobile homes were tossed on their sides. Forecasters had warned of the approaching danger in the area during the night, but campers could easily have missed the advisories because the area is isolated and cell phone service is poor. By Sunday evening, crews had searched some fifty miles of river and tributaries at least twice, and three or four times in some areas, Forest Service Incident Commander Mike Quesinberry said. The terrain made it impossible to bring in heavy equipment to unlock some of the huge debris piles that collected along the river. One measured 30 feet high and more than 100 feet long, he said.

Flooding strands dozens of drivers in Oklahoma City OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Flash flooding across the Oklahoma City area stranded motorists on their morning commutes Monday, prompting at least a half-dozen rescues and at least three interstate closures, authorities said. No injuries were immediately reported but drivers were being warned to stay off the roads, Oklahoma Police Lt. Gamille Hardin said. Portions of interstates 35, 44 and 235 were closed, as were numerous smaller thoroughfares in and out of the metro area. “There are cars where you can see just the rooftops, they’re totally submerged in water, Hardin said. Footage from KOCO-TV showed a person bailing water out of the passenger-side window of a half-submerged car before being rescued by crews on a boat.
