Three new principals have been named in Sevier County schools. Kim Grosser is the new principal of Boyds Creek Elementary; Scott Hensley has been appointed to lead Pigeon Forge Middle; and Tony Ogle got “interim” removed from his title at Jones Cove Elementary. “I feel sure that Kim, Scott and Tony will exhibit strong and dynamic leadership in the
months and years ahead,” said Director of Schools Jack Parton. “They individually possess skills, strengths and talents to lead effectively and to challenge each student to reach the highest levels of achievement.” Grosser will become principal of Boyds Creek Elementary on July 1, following John Wade’s retirement. A Boyds Creek native, Grosser began her teaching career in 1990 at Pigeon Forge Middle where she taught fifth, sixth, and
seventh grades and eventually computer technology. Upon the opening of Boyds Creek Elementary, she became a middle grades science teacher and in 2006 was named assistant principal. She has a bachelor of science degree from Tennessee Technological University and a master of science degree in supervision and administration from Lincoln Memorial. Hensley will become principal
at Pigeon Forge Middle on July 1. Troy Kelley resigned as principal earlier in the summer. A Pigeon Forge native, Hensley began teaching physical education in Tazewell in 1993. In August 1993, he became a teacher at Catons Chapel Elementary where he later served as assistant principal for six years. In 2009, Hensley transferred to Pi Beta Phi Elementary where he See principals, Page A4

King Family Library unveils John Sevier likeness By ELLEN BROWN Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — A crowd of local dignitaries, officials and residents attended the unveiling of the John Sevier Statue and dedication of named spaces at the King Family Library Tuesday night. The statue of Sevier — Tennessee’s first governor — in the building’s downstairs lobby was commissioned and sculpted by Zenos Frudakis, who has created works in public collections in the U.S. and abroad for 20 years. “I’m thankful for this opportunity — libraries have always been very important to me,” said Frudakis, who has been creating art since he was a child. “Much of (the statue) came from research. I wanted to get in as much of his character as I could. I based it on a painting by Charles Willson Peale, an artist and contemporary of George Washington’s.” Several descendants of Sevier were on hand for the unveiling, including Sarah Ussery and Bill Yett, both of Sevierville. “I can remember my

Ussery grew up in Knoxville and still has many cousins who live in
the area. Her children live in Middle Tennessee. Yett is a descendant of Sevier through Sevier’s brother, Valentine Sevier. “My mother let me know real quick that I was related to John Sevier,” he said with a smile. “When I was little, I can remember going
to Sevier family reunions. Thirty years ago was the last one, when John Howard Sevier passed away.” Sevier County Public Library Director K.C. Williams has enjoyed watching visitors enter the new library every day, “simply stopping and looking up in amazement.” Many patrons have also commented on the namesakes of each of the building’s dedicated rooms as they discover them. “Thank you for sharing your stories with the people of this community,” Williams told the crowd. County Mayor Larry Waters said the image of Sevier was “a great addition to the library.” “This is also a special opportunity to honor the families who are a part of this,” Waters added. Judge Rex Henry Ogle noted that in a time of uncertainty and chaos, it was refreshing to come and celebrate “a place so special that will serve generations long after we’re gone. “I don’t know how anyone can walk into this building and not be inspired,” Ogle said. n ebrown@themountainpress.com
PIGEON FORGE — City officials are motoring ahead on a plan to put a traffic signal at the intersection of the Parkway and Music Road, home to tourist draws such as WonderWorks and Titanic Museum Attraction, but the fact they’ve taken their last step on the matter doesn’t mean drivers will soon be seeing red or green. The City Commission voted unanimously during its session Monday evening to submit an application for $225,000 in state transportation money. The award would cover the entire tab for installation of the light, with no local match required. That should be very good news for Pigeon Forge leaders and motorists, as well as the owners of the Music Road businesses, who have been calling for some time for a signal to improve both access and safety in the congested area. However, their joyous reaction may be delayed by as much as a year or more thanks to a backlog in projects funded by the state’s Surface Transportation Program. “This won’t be any time soon, though,” Public Works Director Mark Miller said. “It will take a while for you to see the light. I’ve talked to other cities that are using this money and it’s taking a long time, unfortunately.” That translates in most cases to several months to as much as a year before things actually get rolling when they’re funded by the state, which is actually passing on federal transportation dollars from the fund the city is See signal, Page A4
Wamp: Race intensifies with finish line in sight By JEFF FARRELL Staff Writer Congressman Zach Wamp says interest in the gubernatorial primary is growing even as he and the other candidates are entering the final legs of the campaign to win the Republican nomination to be governor of Tennessee. Wamp has been the representative for the third congressional district of Tennessee since 1994, but is seeking the GOP nod in the gubernatorial race, along with Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam
and Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey. In an interview at The Mountain Press office on Tuesday, Wamp said he’s seen growing interest in the campaign, Wamp including at a debate earlier this week in Johnson City. “Over 400 people came in the middle of the afternoon on a Monday so that was evidence to me that people are really keying
in on the choices,” he said. One of the major new issues that has arisen in recent months centers around a law from another state, he said. Arizona’s new law on illegal immigration has been a major topic among voters. Wamp said he supports initiatives to pass a similar law in Tennessee; the statute would allow Tennessee law enforcement officers to detain and remove people who are discovered to be in the country illegally. “All Arizona has done is pass
a statute saying people in this country illegally can be removed by the state if the federal government doesn’t do their job,” he said. He also supports efforts to bring e-Verify to Tennessee; the software allows for comparison of employment eligibility verification forms to the federal government’s database to verify employees aren’t using false identification. “I’m all for enforcing (immigration laws), but I’m not for See wamp, Page A4

Mimirichi’s 57th high school reunion Paper World set to debut at Dollywood Submitted Report PIGEON FORGE — The Paper World Show by Mimirichi makes its U.S. debut at Dollywood’s new Adventure Theater, just one element of the park’s annual KidsFest celebration. A winner of numerous international awards, The Paper World Show by Mimirichi stars a cast of Ukrainian clowns in a production that blends comedy, slapstick, audience participation and not one word of dialogue. The English translation of Mimirichi means “rich for mimics. Spontaneously and unexpectedly, clowns tear down the house, transforming the paper remnants. Four shows are performed Tuesday through Sunday in Showstreet Palace Theatre, and all shows are included with park admission. “For my new Adventure Theater at Dollywood’s KidsFest, I’ve invited some of the most popular and entertaining comedians, jugglers, clowns, ventriloquists and magicians that you’ll see anywhere this summer, Dolly Parton said. The remaining Adventure Theater lineup: n Mark Nizer, June 22-27: The comedic juggler balances a running electric knife, a burning propane tank and a 16-pound bowling ball, all at once. n Curtis Adams, June 29-July 4: This magician does stunts, illusions, visual effects and comedy. n The Gazillion Bubble Show, July 6-11: Lasers, lighting effects, and bubble artistry. n The Passing Zone, July 13-18: The five-time Guinness world juggling record holders juggle torches and knives — even audience members. n Mad Science Productions “Star Trek Live, Still, city leaders welcomed the news the project will be completely paid for, given what they consider a pressing need and a desperate budget year. “This is going to help us out a lot, Vice Mayor Kevin McClure said. Among the costs that will be paid by the award are those for the design, engineering, purchase of equipment and installation. During Monday’s session, the group also agreed to select Wilbur Smith and Associates as the consultant engineer for the installation of the signal. Miller told the group his department received qualifications from three companies and settled on the Knoxville firm. The company did the design work on the light at the other access to the Music Road development zone, Miller said. They shouldn’t have much trouble getting a plan drawn up for the other entrance since it was originally built with the intention of putting in a signal, complete with double turn lanes on Music Road and the Parkway. The group also voted to approve: n Ordinance 907 to keep the property tax rate for the 201011 fiscal year at $.1242 per $100 valuation (first reading) n Ordinance 908 making and fixing the annual appropriations for the several departments of the city for the coming fiscal year (first reading, with a public hearing and second vote on both to follow during the second meeting of the month on June 28) n An agreement with the Thomas Group for sales promotion and production of ads for the city’s 2011 Travel Planner, 2011-2012 Destination Guide, 2011 Pigeon Forge Value Card and any other co-op authorized by the Department of Tourism n Completing an inventory trade with Dalmatian Fire Equipment for SCBA bottles n A sublease agreement with New Cingular Wireless for the rental of tower space for communication equipment. n dhodges@themountainpress.com
Former Blagojevich aide leaves stand visibly shaken CHICAGO (AP) — Rod Blagojevich’s defense attorney tore into the credibility of a key government witness Tuesday, repeatedly accusing him of lying about the ousted Illinois governor’s role in alleged corruption in hope of securing a more lenient sentence for himself. Alonzo Monk, Blagojevich’s onetime law school roommate and friend, appeared shaken and disoriented at times as he completed a fourth day of testimony and finally was excused from the witness stand — but only after a relentless and blistering cross-examination. As fiery defense attorney Sam Adam Jr. hammered at Monk, getting him to admit he lied repeatedly to the governor and lobbying clients who were paying him $150,000 a year, Blagojevich shook his head and smiled perceptibly. “As my old friend was testifying and saying things that he knew weren’t true, I couldn’t help but think about the times we spent together, Blagojevich told reporters afterward. “I couldn’t help but think about his mother and his father —

He said a list of possible moneymaking schemes they could pursue, using Blagojevich’s newfound power as governor, was written on a blackboard. But Monk admitted on cross-examination he could remember few details of the meeting. “Tell us the name of it! By JENNIFER LOVEN Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON — Dedicating new urgency to the Gulf oil spill, President Barack Obama accused BP of “recklessness in the first Oval Office address of his presidency Tuesday night and swore not to rest until the company has paid for the damage it has caused to lives, businesses and shorelines. He announced that he had asked former Mississippi Gov. Ray Mabus to develop a long-term Gulf Coast Restoration Plan — to be funded by BP PLC — in concert with local states, communities, fishermen, conservationists and residents “as soon as possible. Obama did not detail what this plan should include or how much it might cost, a price sure to be in the billions of dollars. Whatever the bottom line, he declared to his primetime television audience, “We will make BP pay. Still, eight weeks into the crisis, oil continues to gush from the broken wellhead, millions of gallons a day, and Obama has been powerless to stem the leak. The sad episode has raised doubts about his leadership and his administration’s response to what Obama has called the nation’s worst environmental disaster. A new Associated PressGfK poll shows for the first time a majority of Americans disapproving of his handling of the situation. A government panel of scientists said earlier Tuesday that the undersea well is leaking even more oil than previously thought, as much as 2.52 million gallons a day — or enough to fill the Oval Office more than 22 times. The total spilled so far could be as much as 116 million gallons. BP has had only modest success so far in stemming the flood of oil, but Obama said that within weeks “these efforts should capture up to 90 percent of the oil leaking out of the well. Later in the summer, he said, the company should finish drilling a relief well to stop the leak completely. Much of the president’s speech was devoted to a recitation of steps his administration has already

President Barack Obama is photographed after delivering a televised address from the Oval Office of the White House in Washington on Tuesday. taken — “from the very beginning, he said — to clean the oil, help the distraught people of the Gulf and prevent another environmental crisis. “We will fight this spill with everything we’ve got for as long it takes, Obama said. Likening that process to a long epidemic instead of a single crushing disaster like an earthquake or hurricane, he said the nation could be tied up with the oil and its aftermath for months “and even years. Looking ahead to his showdown Wednesday morning with BP executives, Obama said he would “inform them that the company must set aside whatever resources are required to make whole all local residents and businesses hurt by the spill and to repair the immense ecological damage wrought by the oil. That meeting was to be followed by a presidential statement — his fourth planned remarks on the spill in three days. Later in the week, BP leaders take the Washington hot seat again, appearing before more congressional hearings. However, Obama said that the new Gulf restoration plan would go beyond
just repairing the effects of the crude on a unique, teeming ecology that was already battered by the 2005 hurricanes Katrina and Rita. “We must make a commitment to the Gulf Coast that goes beyond responding to the crisis of the moment, the president said. Obama also urged the nation and Congress to get behind his goal of passing sweeping energy and climate change legislation, a key domestic priority of his presidency that had become
a long shot. Though Obama supports placing a price on heat-trapping carbon emissions, he did not directly state that. “The tragedy unfolding on our coast is the most painful and powerful reminder yet that the time to embrace a clean energy future is now, he said. “I say we can’t afford not to change how we produce and use energy - because the longterm costs to our economy, our national security, and our environment are far greater.

New kids’ hospital opens in Memphis MEMPHIS (AP) — Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis celebrated the grand opening of its new facility on Tuesday with a promise to bring technologically advanced medical care to children in the mid-South region. The 255-bed, $340 million hospital is geared to care for the more than 130,000 sick and injured children who come to the hospital from within a 250-mile radius each year. Patients will be transferred from the existing hospital to the newly built facility
starting in September. Le Bonheur’s expansion also enhances Memphis’ status as a center for child medical care. The widely respected St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is nearby. The celebration, which marked Le Bonheur’s 58th birthday, was celebrated with a parade featuring marching bands, floats pulled by pickup trucks, and three special young grand marshals. The parade was narrated by Roscoe Orman and Sonia Manzano — “Gordon” and “Maria” from “Sesame

Street” — and the 1 1/2hour ceremony was attended by several hundred people who braved temperatures above 90 degrees. One of the marshals, 12-year-old Chandler “Chance” Futrell of Monroeville, Miss., was treated at Le Bonheur after suffering an accidental gunshot wound to his leg in November 2009. He underwent 13 surgeries and still uses crutches, but the procedures saved his leg and his life. “To have a national, premier center like this,
right here in our backyard, for us as Memphians is incredible, and it’s good for the whole mid-South,” said Robert Wilson, whose 3-year-old daughter Mary Quay receives care at Le Bonheur for spina bifida. The project was somewhat of an anomaly: a large commercial construction project built in a difficult economic climate. The decision to build was made in 2005, and groundbreaking was in February 2008. A $103 million contribution from the Memphis community helped with construction costs.

Reid contest a blueprint for Democrats
Basically, there are two ways that an elected politician can run for re-election: A) The High Road approach, where the incumbent candidate reminds the voters of the positive changes in their lives the incumbent’s actions and policies have made. B) The Not-So-High Road route, when voters are unable to see positive changes in their lives during the incumbent’s term so the candidate for re-election seeks to focus the electorate’s attention on the defects and weirdness of his opponent. This, I call the “I May Be No Day at the Beach, but the Other Guy Is No Month in the Country.” For too many obvious reasons, Democrats running for re-election in 2010 are generally skipping Option A and going directly to Option B. Understand that on the eve of the most recent midterm election in 2006, when the Democrats were about to win control of the U.S. House for the first time in 12 years, voters — according to the Gallup Poll — held a favorable opinion of the Democratic Party by a 52 percent to 38 percent margin. Today, just 43 percent of voters feel favorably toward the Democrats, while 52 percent harbor unfavorable feelings. True, the Republican numbers are worse. They have actually fallen slightly from their 2006 low of 37 percent favorable and 55 percent unfavorable to 36 percent favorable and 58 percent unfavorable today. But that is of no consolation to the Democrats, who — as dyspeptic voters all know — are in charge, controlling the White House and both the House and the Senate. If real estate is all about location, location, location, then midterm elections are all about turnout, turnout, turnout. There is no more reliable predictor of voter turnout than the relative enthusiasm and interest of both parties’ voters. With less than five moths until Election Day, the enthusiasm gap among voters is decisively in the Republicans’ favor. Not surprisingly, the GOP wants 2010 to be a straightforward referendum on the Democrats’ stewardship. Voters who just 14 months ago saw the nation headed “in the right direction” rather than “off on the wrong track” by 50 percent to 48 percent, in the most recent Washington Post-ABC News survey now see the U.S. headed “in the wrong direction” by 60 percent to 37 percent. Democrats, who cannot win a referendum, have to instead make the 2010 campaign a choice between the two parties and their respective records and allies. There is probably no more representative race of the 2010 election year than the Nevada Senate race, where Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, with jobapproval numbers in the 30s, is seeking a fifth Senate term. The state’s unemployment rate has just set a record high at 13.7 percent, and Nevada leads the nation in both bankruptcies and foreclosures. Reid could not win an up-or-down vote on whether he deserves another six years in Washington. But just because Reid cannot “win” reelection, do not bet against him. In last Tuesday’s Nevada primary, Reid got the Republican opponent he most wanted to run against, Sharron Angle, an unreconstructed conservative with tea party backing. Maybe Reid cannot win, but Sharron Angle can most certainly lose. She advocates a “free market alternative”’ that “phases out the Social Security system” and the abolition of the IRS code, the U.S. departments of education and energy, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency. But challenger Angle’s greatest liability may turn out to be her plan to convert Yucca Mountain into a “profitable center for reprocessing” nuclear waste. This, in a state where candidates from both parties have pledged to keep their state from becoming a repository for spent nuclear fuel. Harry Reid’s unstated campaign premise: I may be no day at the beach, but she is most definitely no month in the country. That will be the blueprint for Democratic candidates in 2010 trying to avoid a Republican wave. — Mark Shields is a veteran political campaign manager and frequent television talk show commentator. Homeward bound We’ll get the 278th back in the states early, and that’s good news What a nice piece of good news this week. Members of Tennessee’s biggest National Guard unit are coming home early. The 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, mobilized last December and deployed to Iraq in February for a year, will be arriving home this summer — some of the soldiers as early as this week. As you know, a number of these men and women are stationed out of the Pigeon Forge armory. Sevier County claims several of these Guard members. We want them back as soon as possible. The first units of the regiment will have approximately 250 soldiers from armories in Maryville, McKenzie and Henderson who are scheduled to arrive in two flights today. The return will be carried out in phases over two to three months. The first soldiers arrived
at Camp Shelby, Miss., in mid-June. The remaining troops will demobilize through Camp Shelby in groups through the end of August. Why so early? It’s to meet the military’s plan for reducing troops in Iraq. “In order to meet the National Command Authority’s timeline of less than 50,000 combat troops in Iraq after Aug. 31, soldiers of the 278th have begun leaving their Iraqi bases and heading back to the United States,” Maj. Gen. Max Haston, Tennessee’s Adjutant General, said. “We are extremely pleased to welcome these brave soldiers home earlier than planned.” So will we. These brave men and women have served their unit, their Guard and their country well. Some have been deployed three times to Iraq
and/or Afghanistan. They have worn the uniform with pride, even with the knowledge they left behind loved ones at home and were in dangerous situations while in service. Nearly 20,000 Tennessee soldiers and airmen have deployed since Sept. 11, 2001. The 278th is headquartered in Knoxville and is composed of more than 3,400 soldiers from across the state. These are no weekend warriors, as members of the Guard and Reserve used to be known. In these troubled times we have called upon them time and time again, to serve in faraway danger zones. The send-off from the armory last December and again in February was special. Let’s make sure their return is equally as special.

Public forum Service aboard a submarine was exciting, but sometimes harrowing
Editor: I read, with pleasant surprise, Editor Stan Voit’s Sunday column describing my experiences in the Submarine Service of the Navy. It was very well written. Thank you very much. I would like to add a few comments: Although I was instrumental in starting Smoky Mountain Sub Vets, the real credit for starting our organization goes to George Parker, our first Base Commander. Our current Base Commander is Marlin Helms. From the 1960s to the 1980s there were many exciting, and sometimes harrowing, events that occurred, mainly to the fast attack submarines (SSNs), most of which are still classified. And many of the members of Smoky Mountain Sub Vets experienced those events. For example, one of our members served on the USS Lapon (SSN661) with the renowned CDR “Whitey” Mack and his stalwart crew, who were known for playing “chicken of the sea” with Russian submarines. You will find an unauthorized account of the adventures of the Lapon and other submarines that took place during this time period in the book, “Blind Man’s Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage” by Sontag & Drew. Another of our members was a reactor operator on the first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus, (SSN-571). The Nautilus made the first transit beneath the North Pole submerged, an account of which is described in “Nautilus 90 North” by CDR William R. Anderson, its
commanding officer during the voyage. Our oldest member, Charlie Odom, is a 94-year-old retired Navy chief engineman who survived a number of depth charge attacks by the Japanese navy during WWII. One such attack upon the USS Billfish (SS-286) is described in great detail in “War Beneath the Waves” by Don Keith, in which Chief Odom figures prominently and whose actions were one of the major reasons the boat was not sunk. Most of our members “have been there and done that,” as we like to say. Finally, I’d like to emphasize that our organization, United States Submarine Veterans Inc. (USSVI) exists so that those who have gone before us, especially those who have given their life in the service of our country, are not forgotten. This is the USSVI creed: To perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of duties while serving their country. That their dedication, deeds, and supreme sacrifice be a constant source of motivation toward greater accomplishments. Pledge loyalty and patriotism to the United States of America and it’s Constitution. Smoky Mountain Sub Vets meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Bass Pro restaurant. For more information: http://www.smokymountainbase.com. Thank you, Mr. Voit, for your attention. Your excellent column was greatly appreciated. Stan Mize Sevierville

PREP BASKETBALL
Bears have gone 10-0 in summer camps By JASON DAVIS Sports Editor
Jason Davis/The Mountain Press
Rising senior Zac Gonzalez will have to be a leader for next year’s Smoky Bears basketball team. Gonzalez and fellow seniors Josh Johnson and Dakota Cogdill have been filling into that role nicely so far in summer camps, according to SCHS coach Ken Wright.
SEVIERVILLE — The graduation of eight seniors hasn’t hamstrung the Sevier County High School basketball resurgence, if the results from two summer team camps hold up. The team went 10-0 at the camps, beating teams such as Greeneville, David Crockett and CAK, despite a lack of size in the middle left void by the graduation of 6-foot-9 center Jordan Henrickson and fellow post players Austin Nave and Alex Pate. Using a faster-paced brand of basketball, the Bears, led by rising seniors Zac Gonzalez, Josh Johnson and Dakota Cogdill, have continued the Purple and White’s upswing that was started by last year’s IMAC championship team. “We’ve had a great summer. I’m really pleased with our progress,” SCHS coach Ken Wright said. “We’ve gotten tremendous leadership from three of our seniors, They have that winner’s mentality.” That mentality, Wright said, was thrust upon the younger players by those team leaders. “We’ve got a lot of young guys

PREP BASKETBALL
PF hoops working through summer to overcome lack of experience By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer PIGEON FORGE — The young Pigeon Forge Tigers boys’ basketball team will have their work cut out for them this coming season in arguably the best prep hoops district in the state, but as always under fourth-year coach Jonathan Shultz, the Orange and Black will not go down without a fight. “Our district is going to be just as tough as last year,” said Shultz. “With Fulton, GatlinburgPittman, Austin-East and Carter, I don’t think there’s any team — in AA at least — that can match up with those four teams. “We’re going to be young. We’ve got some talent, but we don’t have a lot of experience or size. Our biggest guy is (rising sophomore) Wil Crowe at 6-foot-2 in a district of giants. We have a lot of work to do.” The Tigers have already began that work with their first summer camp action last week at Maryville College, coming away from that tournament with five wins and seven losses. After losing seniors Justin Carter, Ben Cave, Billy Hewett,
Justin Kilgore and Ryan Crowe to graduation, the Pigeon Forge team has very little starting experience returning to this year’s squad. Rising senior point PF coach guard Aaron Jonathan Shultz Justus, who has five games of varsity starting experience, will be counted on to step up as a team leader. Benton Tinker and Caleb Ownby will be the only other senior leadership on the 2010-11 Tigers team, so rising sophomores Kaleb Black and Wil Crowe along with rising juniors Andy Barnett and Curtis Jordan will also be counted on heavily, as will a handful of other unproven varsity underclassmen. “We lost about 80 percent of our scoring and rebounds, so we really don’t know what the future holds,” said Shultz. “These guys I’ve got were successful in junior varsity, but varsity is a whole other level... especially in our district.
“I think that we’re better at the one-on-one, taking our man to the rim and scoring game. But we really have to improve our effectiveness in the half court offense. We don’t execute as well in the half court as last year’s team, because we don’t have the experience yet.” The Orange-and-Black team will continue to build team chemistry later this week with a trip to a Grainger tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Before the TSSAA dead period for prep teams ended recently, several of the Pigeon Forge players worked through the spring in AAU action. Barnett plays for the God’s Chosen Few 16U team, which lost the AAU state championship game last weekend in Nashville in overtime. Barnett’s team will next travel to Orlando for nationals in July. Most of the other Orange-andBlack players competed as a high school squad coached by the recently graduated Cave at local AAU tournaments from March through May. chitchcock@themountainpress.com

SOUTHERN LEAGUE BASEBALL
Chen delivers for Smokies in 2-1 win
Rennie Leon/Tennessee Smokies
Hung-Wen Chen pitches in the Smokies’ 2-1 win.
SEVIERVILLE — In arguably his biggest start to-date this season, Tennessee Smokies RHP Hung-Wen Chen came through with his most clutch performance by holding the hot-hitting West Tenn Diamond Jaxx at bay over six scoreless innings during Monday night’s 2-1 win at Smokies Park. Chen’s strong performance led the Smokies to the series-clinching win, which also puts Tennessee (39-25) in the driver’s seat over West Tenn (36-27) with a 2.5-game lead in the race for the first half Southern League North Division title. Before Chen could put Monday night’s performance in the win column, he and most of the 3,389 in attendance had to sweat out a tense ninth inning.
With the Smokies leading 2-0 heading into the final frame, West Tenn’s Johan Limonta doubled off the left-field wall off Tennessee reliever David Cales. After Scott Savastano singled to put runners on first and third, Carlos Triunfel drove a sacrifice fly to deep center to bring in Limonta and cut Tennessee’s lead to 2-1. West Tenn’s Jeff Dominguez, who victimized Cales with a solo homer one day prior, hit a ground ball to 2B Tony Thomas with all the makings of a game-ending double play. SS Marwin Gonzalez’s throw to first was just a split-second late, however, keeping West Tenn alive with the tying run on first and two outs. A grounder by West Tenn’s Kuo Hui Lo hit
between first and second that Thomas couldn’t quite reach moved Dominguez to second and put the tying run in scoring position. Cales (S, 6) reared back, though, and struck out Brandon Haveman to end the game. Chen (7-5) continued his impressive 2010 campaign Monday night, allowing just four hits and three walks while striking out four. The win was his fourth straight, lowering his ERA to 2.43 on the year. Tennessee relievers Luke Sommer and Alex Maestri played key roles in the win, holding West Tenn scoreless over 1-2/3 innings. Maestri needed just five pitches to get three outs in the seventh, while the two outs Sommer registered brought his scoreless-inning total with the
Smokies to eight. Both runs scored by Tennessee came from two of the team’s hottest performers over the past week. Brandon Guyer doubled and then stole third, putting himself in position to score on a Josh Vitters high chopper to give the Smokies the early 1-0 lead. Thomas’s leadoff double in the eighth ended with his crossing of home on a Steve Clevenger RBI single, proving to be the game-winner for the Smokies. After a travel day Tuesday, the Smokies will play a five-game series against the Mobile BayBears, starting 8:05 p.m. tonight. Tennessee returns to Smokies Park 7:15 p.m. Tuesday for five games against the Carolina Mudcats.

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 â—† The Mountain Press RACING WITH RICH
Late race caution fails to produce desired result It seems pretty amazing that after so much has been written and said, jokes have been made and criticism has been levied that NASCAR continues the practice of the mysterious late race debris cautions to bunch the field for a final dash to the checkered flag. One would think that race officials would take a couple of weeks off just to allow the conspiracy theorists to lose some credibility. However, in Sunday’s Heluva Good! 400 at the Michigan International Speedway an event as surprising as a hot July day in Texas occurred once again. Just after all the final round of green flag pit stops had been completed debris was ‘spotted’ on the back stretch of the 2 mile track and the
yellow flag waved. Last week in Pocono the late race caution did exactly what was intended, it produced a number of highlights for the various Sunday night sports shows. Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano got together on the track and later on pit road with Logano’s father and Harvick’s wife eventually playing roles in the conflict both directly and indirectly. And, A.J. Allmendinger aggressively blocked Kasey Kahne which sent Kahne
sideways up in front of about half the field. After the crashing was over on the track Kahne did little to spare the feelings of his teammate in the garage area. Those are the kind of things that get NASCAR air time on SportsCenter when it has to go up against other sports. This week, however, Logano and Harvick did not have any meetings. No cars were sent sliding in front of the pack to create those slow motion impact shots of metal being ripped away. No real wars of words occurred. Instead, Denny Hamlin just did what he had done for much of the day. He drove away from the field as he cruised to a comfortable
win. In victory lane Hamlin let NASCAR’s cat out of the bag. “I knew a caution was coming, so I might as well back off and save my tires, he said. “I knew that debris caution was coming. We’ve got to do what’s right for the fans, and they need to see a great race at the end. The best car won — and that’s all you can ask for. As if that wasn’t enough, Hamlin added still more later. “No, I didn’t see any debris, if that’s what you’re asking, he declared. “I mean, we typically get them every single week. I’m not going to say it’s accepted, but what can you do? “I’m all for some of these cautions, Hamlin went on. “You know, if I don’t win the race because maybe I
get a bad restart or something, then probably I’m angry because I feel like NASCAR changed the outcome of the race. “But, you know, we did everything. It was still on me to do my job to win the race. I feel like I got a good restart, got clear of those guys. You know, I understand this is show business. Show business, huh? Aren’t most things in show business scripted? The purpose in sport, or at least the stated purpose, is to determine a legitimate winner. So much for legitimacy. To be fair, Kasey Kahne, who was running second at the time of the caution, said he did see debris. It is also fair to point out that the driver with the big lead has reason to say there is
no debris while the trailing driver has reason to see debris everywhere he looks. And perhaps one other point that might cause some to doubt Hamlin’s ability to spot debris on the track. When he got out of the car he thanked the fans and claimed this was one of the biggest crowds he had seen at Michigan. His eyesight must be failing. All in all, in a week in which much of the sports world will be focused on the World Cup, college conference realignment and the NBA playoffs, the desired result of the late race caution did not materialize, whether there was any debris on the track or not. — To contact me please visit my website at RacingWithRich.com.

I call them my fist-shakers — they’re the ‘we’re not losing this game’ guys, and you’ve got to have that. “They took the bull by the horns and molded these guys. While the Bears won’t have a lot of size in the post, they do have a bull of player with the enough knowledge and hustle to off-set opponents’ height advantages. “Our starting post player is Dakota Cogdill, who hates to realize that he’s 5-foot-11, but that’s what he is. But he’s a warrior. He’s one of those guys that wears his heart on his sleeve and he understands positioning and quickest to the ball. It’s not all about size, it’s about want-to, and he held his own. He did a great job for us in the post. The smaller post size has changed the Bears’ strategy from last year’s plodding half-court game to a more fast-paced type of basketball. “We’ve had to change and be more of an up-tempo team and we’ve worked on that this summer. Up-tempo but in control. It’s not runand-gun. I thought we did a great job of pressure defense and understanding that we’ve got to hang our hat on defense. It’s got to be our forte. The only thing I worry about without size is defending the post. Still, in a game against David Crockett, who’s got a 6-foot-11 prospect in Zach Garland, the Bears did fine. “We did alright, we held our own against him, and we were able to beat him, Wright said.
“You’ve got to do it with running the court and getting the game to be fastpaced instead of a half-court game. Which is completely the opposite of last year, but in high school basketball you’ve got to adapt your system to your players. It’s not my system, my system is based on what I have for talent. “Our spring and summer is based on figuring out what we can do to be successful. While most that success will count on good seasons from Johnson, Gonzalez, Cogdill and junior Bentley Manning, who missed the camps due to family obligations, three younger players figure into the Bears’ plans in a big way. Jake Moore and Jon Gonzalez, two juniors, will see lots of minutes. “(Moore) got a lot of playing time this summer, and I’m really pleased with his progress, Wright said. “And (Gonzalez) is ready to step in and give us some good minutes in relief of Zac. Perhaps the biggest new contribution to the Bears could come from 6-foot-1 sophomore Devin Schmidt. “I knew he had the talent, but at times Devin was the best offensive player on the court, Wright said. “He’s got great athleticism, he knows how to finish at the rim and take the ball to the hole. He just has that air of confidence about him that you don’t usually see in a sophomore. Once he learns consistent effort, he’s got a chance to be the best offensive player on the court. He’s got the strength, he’s got the speed. He’s got everything to be a successful player. I was really pleased with how well he played this summer. He’s just got to learn consistent effort, when he does that he’s got the chance to be a great player here at Sevier County High School. Wright also said the team had a “great freshman class coming in. “They’ve got a chance to be one of the best classes to go through Sevier County, he added.

MSU’s Izzo rejects chance to coach Cavs By LARRY LAGE AP Sports Writer EAST LANSING, Mich. — Tom Izzo is staying at Michigan State, turning down a chance to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers and perhaps LeBron James. “I’m pleased to say I am here for life at Michigan State, Izzo said in a statement released by the school on Tuesday night. For the past nine days, Izzo has been trying to decide whether to leave the place that has been his home since 1983 and jump to the NBA to perhaps make $6 million — doubling his salary — and possibly coaching one of the best basketball players in the world. “Just as I decided to stay
home, I hope a 6-8, 270pound forward in Cleveland decides to stay home, Izzo said in a statement. James’ uncertain future will make for a difficult decision for any prospective Cavs coach. The 25-yearold superstar is unlikely to tip his hand publicly before free agency begins July 1. “It’s been an agonizing week as I tried to make a decision about a once-in-alifetime opportunity, Izzo said in a statement. “I apologize for the time the process has taken, but sometimes there are opportunities that come about that must be thoroughly examined. The Spartans have scheduled an 8:30 p.m. ET press conference with Izzo, school president Lou Anna Simon and athletic director Mark

for the Cavaliers, who are weeks away from knowing if James will be back with them. Since losing to Boston in the second round of the playoffs, owner Dan Gilbert fired Mike Brown, the most successful coach in team history; general manager Danny Ferry left after deciding not to renew his contract following five banner years; and now Izzo, a friend of Gilbert’s, doesn’t want to be in the Cavs’ future. James’ decision hangs over all of it. Without knowing if he’ll return, the Cavs’ pursuit of a coach has been nearly impossible. They can’t promise candidates that No. 23 — soon to be No. 6 — will be around to make another run at a title.

Hollis. This past season, Izzo led the Spartans to the Final Four for the sixth time in 12 years. Only the late John Wooden at UCLA and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski also have done that. “It’s a great day, knowing he’s coming back, said Mateen Cleaves, perhaps Izzo’s favorite player and one of the stars from his 2000 national championship team. “It put the biggest smile on my face to know he’s coming back. Milwaukee Bucks guard Charlie Bell, who played on the 2000 national championship team, was also glad to hear Izzo’s staying: “Izzo is Michigan State basketball. Financial issues causing problems within family

Dear Annie: I am 32 and the youngest of three children. My parents have always been generous -- refinancing our homes, sending each of us to the college of our choice, as well as graduate schools, and offering financial help. All of us are now married with children of our own, and my parents still help us out. Mom and Dad have no hope of retiring anytime soon. While we are all extremely grateful, where does it end? I don’t begrudge my parents how they spend their money, but I worry that they are burdening themselves too much and can’t say “no.” There also seems to be some sibling rivalry developing. Does one child deserve more because she has more children and a lower salary? How about when my wife lost her job? Or when my nephew needed a car? We are all extremely close, and I hate to have financial issues dividing us. Is it possible to avoid these brewing battles while still accepting financial aid from our parents? -- Figuring Out Finances in the Family Dear FOF: None of you should be accepting financial help from Mom and Dad unless it is an emergency. Since you are a close family and are grateful to your parents for their help, perhaps you could initiate a sibling conference and discuss the issue calmly. Explain that the folks aren’t getting any younger and eventually
will need this money. Your siblings should make the effort to wean themselves from their parents’ largesse. It would be better for everyone involved. Dear Annie: I believe my son-in-law, “Carl,” is cheating on my daughter, and I don’t know what to do. Carl works for a home-renovation company. His employer recently hired a 19-yearold woman, and it is obvious that Carl has become infatuated with her. He now tries to dress and act as if he is her age. He even got his ears pierced. This girl has been texting him often. My daughter is a little suspicious, but doesn’t want to question or check up on her husband. Carl leaves the house early in the morning and comes home late at night, but she buys into the excuses he gives her. She is very busy with their three young children. Should I be concerned, and if so, what can be done about his behavior? -- Worried Mother-inlaw Dear Mom: Let your daughter handle her husband. With three little children to raise, she may not want to deal with the possibility that Carl is cheating. And he may not, in fact, be sexually involved with this

young woman. Say nothing derogatory about Carl to your daughter. Should she confide in you and ask for advice, however, please suggest she talk to a marriage counselor. Dear Annie: “Out of Ideas” wrote about a girl at school who sits at her lunch table but doesn’t talk. I am a girl with Asperger’s syndrome, which is a social disorder that makes it hard to read social cues and communicate with others. I’ve also been the person at the end of the table and wish someone had been kind enough to offer their friendship. It was hard not knowing where to sit at lunch because I had no friends and no one was nice enough to ask me to sit with them. I’m older now and a little more understanding, but still, I remember how hard it was. Kudos to “Out of Ideas,” who at least was trying. I hope she will continue. -- Understanding Aspie in N.H. Dear N.H.: Thank you for reminding our readers to be kind. You never know what someone else may be going through. A friendly smile could make their day.
