Those relocated come back for rededication By JEFF FARRELL Staff Writer NEWFOUND GAP — The people who once lived in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and were still alive to see Wednesday’s rededication, are proud of what’s been done with the land where their homes once stood. Sisters Rosa Lee Ogle Fehrenbach and Eva Ogle Webb said it wasn’t so easy to see that when the move first happened. “We were too young to think about
it, but it broke my father’s heart and it broke my grandfather’s heart,” Fehrenbach said. “They loved the park, but they hated to leave.” While moving broke their father’s heart, he did bring them to the 1940 dedication ceremony, they said. They moved to the Waldens Creek area, in what is now Pigeon Forge. For Fehrenbach, who eventually moved away, things don’t feel nearly the same as what she recalls about her old home. What they said...
“Just as remarkable, I believe, is how we who live here feel about the Park. We feel like we own it because our families did. We love it because we grew up hiking here or adopted it as home.”
— U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn.
“I love these mountains. It’s very fitting that one of God’s most beautiful creations is a tribute to the great people of Tennessee and North Carolina.”
— U.S. Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn.
“We should conserve these mountain heights for the American people. They come here because the Smokies – with our people, our traditions and our wonderful hospitality – encapsulate the best that America has to offer.”
— Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C.
“Out of all the things I have been asked to do over the years, being the Ambassador for Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most special. I’ve done my best to share my love of the mountains while protecting them for the future. Even though my work is officially ending, I will continue to share my love for the park as I always have.”

CCC vet watches event with pride By JEFF FARRELL Staff Writer NEWFOUND GAP — For the men who worked on what would become Great Smoky Mountains National Park long ago, the opportunity to join the Civilian Conservation Corps didn’t just represent a chance to build something that has lasted 75 years. It was something much more immediate — a chance to work and to grow up. Bill Young is 85 now. He was 15 when he came to work for the CCC, helping build trails and do other work on what would become the national park. “That matured us young men so well, he recalled during Wednesday’s rededication. It prepared him for his time in the Navy during World War II. “I said ‘Yes, sir’ to everybody. Maturity is what Young says he needed at the time.

neighbors she remembers are gone. Webb remained in the area, but she said seeing the development of Sevier County has come at the price. “To me, it was kind of heartbreaking in a way because you saw these big beautiful buildings to do something supposedly more modern.” She was happier with what’s happened in the park itself. “It seems to have been well kept,” she said. “I’m just sad to see they lost so many trees (to the woolly adelgid).” Pittman Center Mayor Glenn Cardwell’s family was relocated from the park. He can recall his father’s resistance to moving from their home, and the fact that his father eventually decided that the establishment of the park was the best way to preserve the area he loved. He’s happy, he said, to have lived long enough to see a reconciliation for not only his father, but also for many of the others who first resisted being evicted from their homes for the creation of the park. “I know that was a tragedy when they were forced to move, but we’ve lived long enough to see harmony restored,” he said. Rene Winchester said she came up with her daughter as a way to honor her grandmother, who was forced to leave and departed with few possessions but a sewing machine. Her grandmother’s old cabin, was preserved because of its architecture, she said. “This is like a homecoming, this is coming home,” she said. “We have a duty to preserve (the park) because with her sacrifice comes a duty to protect it for me and everybody else.” Several other people shared memories of seeing the first dedication. Elizabeth Adcock said she could remember coming to the area with her family even before the park was dedicated. “We used to come up when there was nothing here,” she said. “It was just al little village.” They came up early for the dedication,, she said, so they could get on the front row. “I got to shake hands with Roosevelt,” she said with a smile. “We got right up front.” Catherine May was present for the first dedication ceremony as well. Her father had worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps, so she can also remember coming up to the area even before the park opened. He loaded the whole family in the car to get up to the dedication ceremony; she said he was so proud of his work on the park that he wanted everyone to be there. She and her brother slipped away from their parents so they could sneak even closer to the stage. “It meant a lot to a kid to see the president,” she said. Gatlinburg hotelier Mary Jo Rambo Miller also recalled the dedication. She and her father stood in front of the family farm where Five Oaks is now to watch Roosevelt go by. “My dad and I were standing by the road and we saw him coming. His was the only car and they drove really slowly. He waved to me and said, ‘Hello, little girl.’” After that, the family got in their car and followed the president up the mountain for the dedication. She says she doesn’t remember much about the president’s remarks, being only 10 at the time, though it stuck with her that he kept talking about the beauty of the mountains. “I remember him putting his hands out and saying, ‘Look at this magnificent place.’” When she heard about the rededication, she was determined to be a part. “I wouldn’t have missed it. To have this place that people from all over the world can enjoy – it’s just wonderful.” n jfarrell@themountainpress.com

but they stay here because of the people.” Though the event was his first visit to the Smokies, Salazar tipped his trademark cowboy hat to the Smokies’ history, from its creation at the height of the Great Depression. “America’s best ideas have often come when our nation has faced its most difficult circumstances,” Salazar said. “With the creation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, our nation determined once again to take bold action. We must renew our commitment to preserving our nation’s beautiful landscapes for generations to come. There are new challenges that we must confront. America has always risen to a challenge. We know that we stand on the shoulders of giants. Big thinking time and time again has led to America’s best ideas. We must build a new legacy of conservation for the 21st Century and those to come.”
Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., outlined some of the most important of those conservation efforts to come. “So what should we hope for as we look to the 100th anniversary?” Alexander asked. “I hope we have finished cleaning the air Curt Habraken/The Mountain Press so that, instead of seeing Eva Ogle Webb and Rosa Lee Ogle Fehrenbach, sisters who used to live smog, we can always see in the Smokies, came back for the rededication ceremony. the blue haze about which the Cherokee and Dolly sang; and that we will have donned a brightly colored hood in the Smokies in that put food on our tables, done more to celebrate the outfit that may well have pointing out that the moun- that gave us everything we way of life of families who tains have meant a livelihad,” Parton said. lived here; that we will have helped attract a bee “the size and color of a waterhood for local folks long become better students of melon” that bedeviled her before they were part of the n dhodges@themountainpress.com the remarkable environmental diversity here—more throughout the proceedings, park. was upbeat as she offered “These mountains are givdifferent kinds of trees her comments on what she ers, not takers. Charles K. Chance, age 65, of Talbott, formerly of Sevierville, passed away in his home on Monday, August 31, 2009, after a battle with lung cancer. He was an avid reader, woodworker, sometime homebuilder and a devoted husband and father. After completing a B.S. degree in Medical Technology at the University of Tennessee in 1977, he began a career in the Morristown medical community that lasted thirty-one years. Infamous for his practical jokes and wit, he was a treasured colleague at Lakeway Regional Hospital, Physicians Medical Laboratory, and the Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System, at each of which he served as chief tech for a time. His greatest accomplishment was raising his two wonderful children. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, William Arlie and Zelma Tarwater, and by his brothers and sister, Tex, Gale, Smitty, Samuel Fenn, and Sarrah Sue. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Lorene Atchley Chance; children, Dr. Brian A. Chance and Lindsay Hayes; daughter-in-law, Dr. Jennifer Saltzstein; son-in-law, John J. “Jack” Hayes IV; step-grandchild, Aiden D. Hayes; sisters, Sally Brake and Betty McKinney; sisters-in-law, Lorene Chance (Gale Chance) and Carsilee Chance (Samuel Fenn Chance); 18 nieces and nephews, including Lisa G. Swab and Jane C. Ellingwood; and a host of other beloved family. He will also be profoundly missed by his friends and colleagues at the MHHS lab. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Morristown Hamblen Hospital, Foundation Oncology Project, 908 W. 4th N. Street, Morristown, TN 37816. Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday at Eden United Methodist Church with Bro. Kojak Graves and Rev. Jerrod McCormack officiating. Interment will follow in Eden Cemetery.

Great weather set the mood for a great day By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer NEWFOUND GAP — It was a day custom-made to order at the top of the world. As more than 2,000 ticketed guests and dignitaries were shepherded off chartered buses by park rangers — what Superintendent Dale Ditmanson calls the “army of green and grey” — clouds hung low and the sky spit rain. Then, almost as if on cue, the clouds broke just as the Gatlinburg-Pittman High School band began playing. It turned out sunglasses, not umbrellas, were the order of the day. Ditmanson said it must have been the best day possible to mark the 75th birthday of the nation’s most popular park. “Just look at this,” Ditmanson said, waving his hands heavenward, “what a beautiful day. It couldn’t have been better.” Five flags — three the standard of America, and one each for North Carolina and Tennessee — fluttered in a light breeze. The Rockefeller Memorial at the gap served as stage for the event, just as it did when President Roosevelt officially dedicated the park in 1940. The wooden chair Roosevelt used during that ceremony sat empty to the left of the podium.

The Gatlinburg-Pittman High band band performs before the ceremony begins. Crowded in a velvetroped area closest to the stand were hundreds of dignitaries, including former Tennessee football Coach Phillip Fulmer, who came to be a part of the event and to see Heath Shuler, a man he coached years ago who now represents Western North Carolina in Congress. People who
attended the Roosevelt dedication ceremony, those born in the park and even 10 men who helped build the park as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps were on hand. Sitting behind them were guests, among them Cynthia Hart, lucky enough to secure one of the 2,000 tickets made
available to the public. Those were snatched up less than two hours after they were offered. Hart, whose family has lived in the area and been involved with the park for generations, was emotional as she recalled her childhood in the Smokies and the joy she felt when she learned she’d be part of the rededication. “I stayed up here every year when I was young,” she said. “My first trip I was in diapers. I missed coming on a vacation once and I started crying.” She was determined to get a ticket. When she got a call confirming her invitation, she asked what it would cost. Told it was free, she started crying. Also in the crowd were Donnie and Brenda Tweed of Gatlinburg. After getting notice from Ranger Bill Wright the tickets would be given away, Brenda Tweed e-mailed her request for two and was amazed when she got them. “What an honor it is to be here and be part of this event,” Donnie Tweed said. “We’re so lucky to be here.” Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce board member Deborah Linnert was invited by virtue of her board role. She squeezed into the only unreserved seat she could find in the second row of the ticketed section, between a mother and son from Cherokee. “This is awesome,”
Linnert beamed. “I am so honored to be here. This is a time in history that is going to be remembered and I’m so proud to be a part of it. I think it’s going to be a fulfilling experience.” As the program commenced, two women, one from Cherokee and the other from Carter County, Tenn., admitted their main motivation for attending was to see 75th anniversary ambassador Dolly Parton. Meanwhile, across the chair-filled parking lot, Director Ron Hicks and members of the Gatlinburg-Pittman High School band were there to be part of it. “We were so excited when we found out at the end of last school year we would be a part of it,” Hicks said. “For some of these kids it may not sink in yet, but they’ll realize
when they’re older and they have kids they can bring back here that this is history.” As the event wound down, Parton was singing “Forever Home,” a song she wrote for the new “Shaconage!” show at Dollywood. As if on cue, as Parton sang about the beauty of the mountains, a mist rose out of the deep valleys on the Tennessee side of the park. “Special effects by God,” Dollywood spokesman Pete Owens joked. Though there are more 75th-themed events to come, Wednesday’s rededication marks the last big hurrah, Ditmanson said. “This was the signature day. It’s going to be winding down after this,” he said as the crowd loaded buses pointed toward their home states. n dhodges@themountainpress.com

Judge rules against rezoning plan NASHVILLE (AP) — A federal judge ordered that a student at the center of a civil rights lawsuit over Nashville’s school rezoning plan be returned to her original school, in a case that raises questions about whether the system’s effort to return students to neighborhood schools is forcing minority children back to nearly all-black schools. Also on Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge William J. Haynes Jr. gave the city 24 hours to get textbooks to students
at the elementary school to which the girl had been transferred. The NAACP sued this week on behalf of the girl’s parents, Frances and Jeffrey Spurlock, saying the rezoning plan was a race-based scheme to move black students out of predominantly white schools. Under the plan, their daughter was transferred from a mostly white school to a mostly black school. “This is an outrage,” attorney Larry Woods, who represented the girl’s family, told The Tennessean

The students haven’t had textbooks to take home since school started about three weeks ago. Nashville school officials said the shortage occurred when the principal didn’t order enough books before school started. “Our first priority is the academic success of our students,” Brown said after the hearing.

Celebrities in the news n Charles Gibson
NEW YORK (AP) — Charles Gibson is retiring at the end of the year and Diane Sawyer will replace him in January as anchor of ABC’s “World News,” the network said Wednesday. Gibson, 66, said he had been planning to retire at the end of 2007 but events c o m pelled him to s t a y . He was named anchor following the death Gibson of Peter Jennings and the wartime injury of Bob Woodruff in 2006. He’s been at ABC News for 35 years and says he plans to continue as an occasional contributor. Sawyer’s elevation means that, with Katie Couric at CBS, two of the three leading anchors for the broadcast networks will be women.

‘Clunkers’ not good program for the public The economic illiterates in Washington are so impressed with the “success” of Cash for Clunkers that they’re readying Cash for Clunker Appliances (http://tinyurl.com/ kqfoe8). The ludicrous “stimulus” bill gave $300 million to the Department of Energy to provide rebates for 10 types of appliances that have been rated energy efficient. Before government extends Cash for Clunkers to more products, it might be a good idea to examine the original. The fact that Washington and the buyers who took advantage of Cash for Clunkers are gaga is hardly evidence that it was in the public interest. It wasn’t. As usual, the program has been judged only by its first and most visible consequences, violating Henry Hazlitt’s teaching in his classic, “Economics in One Lesson” (http://tinyurl.com/dkx9pm): “The art of economics consists in looking not merely at the immediate but at the longer effects of any act or policy; it consists in tracing the consequences of that policy not merely for one group but for all groups.” If you only look at the immediate effects, Cash for Clunkers appears pretty good. People traded in gas-guzzlers for more fuelefficient new cars. The program cut carbon emissions slightly and gave the auto industry a boost. “Manufacturing plants have added shifts and recalled workers. Moribund showrooms were brought back to life, and consumers bought fuel-efficient cars that will save them money and improve the environment,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood bragged (http://tinyurl.com/nu8nz5). “American consumers and workers were the clear winners thanks to the Cash for Clunkers program.” But wait. Shouldn’t that be some consumers and some workers? And only in the short run? Let’s start at the beginning. The government paid car owners to trade in their old cars, which will be destroyed. But the government is running a deficit. So it doesn’t have $3 billion to hand out. It must borrow the money, which reduces the amount of money for other investments. Moreover, the government must raise taxes in the future to pay back the principal and interest -- or the Federal Reserve will monetize the debt through inflation. Either way, we pay. That isn’t all. Those car buyers were either going to trade in their used cars soon or they weren’t. If they were, Cash for Clunkers simply moved up the schedule. The stimulation of the auto industry occurred earlier. Big deal. But if buyers planned to keep their cars longer, the program imposed costs that are less visible. Without the government incentive to buy cars, consumers would have bought other things — computers, washing machines, televisions. The manufacturers and sellers of those products didn’t get to make those sales. Why should the auto industry get privileges at the expense of others? Then there are the mechanics who would have serviced those used cars. They’ve lost business. Some will be laid off. Nor should we forget low-income people who depend on the used-car market for their transportation. The cheap cars they would have bought were destroyed. What about the alleged environmental benefits? Assuming that cutting carbon emissions is worthwhile, was Cash for Clunkers helpful? It’s hard to see why. People who traded in inefficient cars for efficient ones will likely drive more and therefore use more gasoline. Even if carbon emissions are cut by a lot, economist Christopher Knittel says the program will cost more than $365 per ton of carbon saved (http://tinyurl.com/mrmtuy). Economist Bruce Yandle points out what a lousy deal that is: “The much celebrated Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade carbonemission control legislation estimates the cost of reducing a ton of carbon to be $28 when done across U.S. industries. Yes, we are getting carbon-emission reductions by way of clunker reduction, but we are paying a pretty penny for it” (http://tinyurl.com/ lnua3k). Finally, there is something revolting about the government subsidizing the destruction of useful things. It reminds me of the New Deal policy of killing piglets and pouring milk down sewers to keep food prices from falling. Leave it to politicians to think we can prosper by obliterating wealth. — John Stossel is co-anchor of ABC News’ “20/20” and the author of “Myth, Lies, and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel — Why Everything You Know is Wrong.” (C)2009 JFS Productions Inc.

Did the Belle toll?
Monday’s Belle Island auction results at least mean something may happen with the project It’s hard to know if the results of Monday’s scheduled auction of Belle Island development will be a good thing or not for the unfinished Pigeon Forge development, but at least something has happened to move things along. Nobody bid on the project at the courthouse auction, but Regions Bank and other banks that had foreclosed on the developers did offer a credit bid of nearly $24 million. Since nobody else who was gathered for this auction bid on it, the banks took ownership. The banks aren’t talking, and since they aren’t, it’s fair to speculate or guess at what Monday’s actions could mean. Belle Island, a massive commercial development to include shops, restau-
rants, the Darrell Waltrip NASCAR attraction and the Debbie Reynolds Hollywood museum, has remained unfinished for months. It’s about 90 percent done, but a variety of economic and financial issues came together to keep it from being completed. Surely somebody could step in and, with several million dollars, finish it off, recruit tenants and open it to the public. To see the entire project waste away when it’s so close to completion seems unlikely. It looks good, it’s an unusual project, it has some solid anchors and it is in a hotbed of tourist traffic. Of course, even if Belle Island makes it to completion, its success is no sure thing. It was a risky venture from the start, for several reasons. Access will
be difficult since all parking is offsite. Because it is not on the Parkway it faces an obvious challenge to get visitors and shoppers to leave that road and seek out attractions elsewhere. And until our economy rebounds to where it was two or three years ago, everybody will struggle to make ends meet. Still, you have an almost complete development short of being finished by several million dollars. Maybe, just maybe, somebody is out there who sees the potential and is willing to take the risk, knowing they’re getting the entire thing for a bargain. And maybe we might see Debbie Reynolds and Darrell Waltrip come back to Pigeon Forge for a good reason.

SCHS junior Katie Mitchell drives over the water and to the green at Hole 2 of Creekside Golf Course in Seymour on Wednesday. Mitchell leads all golfers at the three-day county tourney after two days with a 6-under 65, setting the Creekside Golf Course all-time high school low score with a 31 on Wednesday.
Mitchell, McCown keeping SCHS, Pigeon Forge on top By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer SEYMOUR — Sevier County High School Smoky Bearette golfer Katie Mitchell is blowing away the competition in the three-day county golf tournament after two days. Mitchell, a transfer student from The King’s Academy, shot an opening-round 2-under at Eagle’s Landing on Tuesday just to follow up with a 4-under at Creekside Plantation on Tuesday. Mitchell’s 31 on the par 35 course in Seymour set a new all-time low high school score at Creekside and dropped her tournament score to an impressive 6-under after two days, leading her nearest female PREP GRIDIRON
competitor by 37 strokes and giving SCHS a 173-199 team lead over Seymour after two rounds. Pigeon Forge’s Chase McCown along with teammate Logan Baker have helped lead Pigeon Forge to a slim 328-330 lead over the SCHS boys’ team. Gatlinburg-Pittman is not far behind with a 332, and Seymour is bringing up the

rear with a 363 after two days. McCown led the boys for the second straight day with a 2-over 37 at Creekside. G-P’s Garrett Barnett and Shade Treadway were the only other boys under 40 with a 38 and 39 respectively. The final round is 2 p.m. today at Gatlinburg Golf Course in Pigeon Forge.

Tigers look for 1st win By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer
PF sophomore Chase Travis kicks off during Wednesday’s practice.
PIGEON FORGE — The Pigeon Forge Tigers gridiron gang looks to recover from several injuries and a 24-13 loss last Friday night at Greenback when they host District 3-AA rival Gibbs Eagles 7:30 p.m. tonight. The Tigers (0-1) have split games with Gibbs the past two seasons under thirdyear coach Lee Hammonds, and despite losing QB Kaleb Black, RB Chase Travis and WR Rodney Porter due to injuries during last week’s game, the Tigers intend to approach tonight’s contest against Gibbs with a winning attitude.
SOUTH DOYLE — The Sevier County High School Smoky Bearettes volleyball squad picked up a pair of wins in three-way action Tuesday night at South Doyle High School. The Bearettes (5-7, 2-1) defeated the host school in four games and swept Lenoir City in two. Megan Daugherty had 16 serves, nine points, four attacks and five digs in the win against South Doyle. Teammate Whitney Phillips added 21 attacks, five kills and three blocks. Kaycee Dixon led the Bearette effort against Lenoir City with nine serves, eight attacks, eight assists, six kills and a block. The Bearettes next play at home tonight against Cocke County.
Seymour v-ball
“It’s been really tight ball games when these two programs have met in the past,” said Hammonds. “Of course, when we line up to play, we’re out there to try to win the ball game. “That’s what we work for every day. Hopefully we’re going to have a few things corrected from last week and keep our kids healthy throughout the entire game (tonight).” Porter has been ruled out of tonight’s contest, but Black and Travis are day-today and have a good chance of playing against Gibbs. The Eagles have outscored opponents 98-50 in two games this season against Grainger and Claiborne.
SEYMOUR — The Seymour Lady Eagles volleyball squad played unkind host to Cherokee High on Tuesday, taking their first district win of the season in four games. “After a disappointing night on Monday, in which we lost two close matches against Halls and Clinton, I simply was not prepared for what I witnessed tonight,” said Seymour coach Ed Irvin. “Even though we lost the first set of the match, we really didn’t play that badly. “I just hoped we could do something we haven’t done so far this season, which is to play a consistent match and not beat ourselves.” That’s exactly what the Lady Eagles (2-6, 1-2) did. After dropping the first game 18-25, Seymour responded with 25-23, 25-19 and 25-14 set wins. Andrea Markowitz led the way with 45 sets, 13 points and 10 assists. Sarah Stoffle added 19 points, three aces. Madison Coker had 12 blocks.

PIGEON FORGE — The Pigeon Forge Lady Tigers soccer squad is already 2-0 in district play this young season after coming away with a 6-0 win over visiting Knoxville Carter on Tuesday. Pigeon Forge jumped all over Carter early, building a 4-0 lead by intermission. Kelsey Brooks and Autumn Wilkinson alternated goals throughout the match, scoring three apiece for the Lady Tigers. Brooks scored 2:09 into the game on an assist from Wilkinson. Wilkinson scored 9:02 into the match on an assist from Dani Montgomery. Brooks added her second 18:51 in on a breakaway unassisted, and Wilkinson made it the halftime score with a minute to play on an assist from Brooks. Wilkinson scored her third of the night 15:54 into the second half off a rebound of her own missed shot. Brooks made it the final 20:45 into the second on another assist from Wilkinson. Pigeon Forge outshot Carter 39-4 for the night. The Lady Tigers next host Gibbs 5:30 p.m. tonight for a chance at their third district win of the season.

The White Lightning 10U softball team had a great season. Front row, from left are Ashlyn Hodge, Megan Parton, Paige Turner and Kiley Longmire. Center row, from left are Hannah Lawson, Amber Headrick, Bailey Pierce, Emma Webb, Caroline Cavin and Kayley Kern. Back row, from left are coaches Mike Parton, Ronnie Bowling and Troy Calloway.
White Lightning has great year The White Lightning 10U girl’s fast-pitch softball team finished a successful 2009 season with eight first-place finishes, including two state championships. The team also had two second-place finishes and one third. The Lightning (55-12) earned a USA/ ASA Class-A berth with a first-place finish in the Drakes Creek Classic held in Hendersonville, a big accomplishment for a mostly first-year team. The Lightning went on to two championships in the ASA Make a Wish and ASA Cocoa-Cola Classic held in
Cleveland. At the end of June, the girls won the ISA State tournament in Crossville and also had a championship in the SEAA state in Knoxville over the July 4th weekend. The team traveled to Cocoa Beach, Fla., for the ISA World Series and finished second in the B-Division. In late July, the team played in the SEAA Fast Pitch World Series in Pigeon Forge, finishing second to an Oklahoma team. White Lightning’s season came to an end in Johnson City in the USA/ASA
A-Nationals, playing teams from five states. The Lightning achieved a dramatic come-frombehind win in the loser’s bracket against the American Athletics team from Mission Viejo, Calif. The girls scored nine runs in the fourth to overcome a 5-0 deficit to win 9-7. However, the girls didn’t fare as well in the next elimination game, losing 1-0 against the Blue Springs Fireballs from St. Louis. White Lightning was the highest-finishing Tennessee team with a 13th-place finish out of 36 teams.
SEVIERVILLE — A sense of urgency came over Tennessee in its series finale with Mobile BayBears Tuesday night, ending with an 8-1 Smokies victory to grab sole possession of first place in the North Division. Casey Coleman, Robinson Chirinos and the rest of the Smokies company combined to dismantle the BayBears in front of 3,522 fans. Tennessee has drawn crowds of 260,153 this season, third highest in team history and at Smokies Park. The Smokies broke through in the bottom of the first when Starlin Castro scored on a SAC fly by Ty Wright, putting Tennessee up 1-0. After Mobile tied the game in the second, the Smokies responded with two runs in each of the second and third innings to go up 5-1. A Robinson Chirinos double brought home Marquez Smith from first on a textbook hit-and-run to put the Smokies up 2-1. Chirinos scored in the frame on a Jim Adduci RBI single to make it 3-1. Chirinos was right in the middle of another Smokies rally in the third, belting his second double of the night and scoring Blake Lalli. Coleman then singled to bring home Smith to give the Smokies a 5-1 lead. The Smokies combined for three runs in the seventh and eighth, making it the eventual final. Coleman picked up his Southern Leagueleading 14th win of the season, allowing just one run on three hits in six innings of work, striking out five. Marcos Mateo and Brian Schlitter combined to shutout the BayBears over the final three innings. Mobile’s Barry Enright (10-9) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in a rocky three-inning, 79-pitch performance. After a day off Wednesday, the Smokies head to West Tenn tonight to face the
Diamond Jaxx in a crucial five-game, regular-season-ending series starting 8:05 p.m tonight.
Smokies make roster moves
The Smokies announced a series of roster moves Tuesday. OF Brandon Guyer returned to Tennessee from High-A Daytona for Tuesday’s game vs. Mobile. In a corresponding roster move, OF Doug Deeds was promoted to Triple-A Iowa. The Smokies roster is still at 24 active players. Guyer hit .173 in 52 games for the Smokies earlier this year, with one home run and 11 RBIs in 168 at-bats. He lit up Florida State League pitching while in Daytona, hitting .347 with 16 doubles and 32 RBIs in 73 games with the D-Cubs. Guyer was a fifthround selection by the Cubs in the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Deeds hit .305 in 61 games for the Smokies since arriving in mid-June from Iowa. While in Tennessee, he hit six homers and drove in 19 runs. Deeds also spent time with the Smokies last year, a 2008 Southern League Mid-Season and Postseason All-Star after batting .325 with 12 home runs and 58 RBIs in 122 games for Tennessee. The Cubs acquired him last April.
Smokies’ Frangella honored

Frangella is a 2004 Illinois State University grad with a degree in athletic training and earned a master’s degree from California University of Pennsylvania in 2007 with a specialization in exercise science. Advice
Grandmother right to be concerned with ex-daughter-in-law’s behavior

Dear Annie: Our oldest son married a beautiful woman from another culture, who then became pregnant with our only grandson, “Seth.” We were warned that “Zelda” was a gold digger who would leave our son after having the baby and live on the child support. Apparently Zelda’s older sister had done this a few years earlier. True to form, Zelda left when Seth was a toddler, and they eventually divorced. Zelda’s plans were upset, however, because our son managed to get joint custody. Now Zelda has become increasingly hateful and manipulative. She rarely attends counseling sessions and has initiated numerous legal procedures, always losing her demands for more money and full custody. I worry that Zelda’s behavior is harmful to Seth, now 7. She tells him to keep secrets from his dad, refuses to let Dad talk to him on the phone and won’t discuss our grandson’s medical appointments and camp openings with his father. My husband and I do not live in the same state, but we visit often and take Seth on trips whenever we can arrange it. But we find ourselves questioning Zelda’s sanity when we read some of the vicious e-mails she sends him (she copies us along with our son’s lawyer), threatening legal repercussions if he phones her or addresses her by her first name. (He has to call her “Ms. Smith.”) We never speak to Zelda. She appears to have the mistaken impression that I’m on her side, but of course,
I find her behavior reprehensible. She lost her last job and does not work. She openly sleeps with a man who refuses to tell our son his name. When she stays at her boyfriend’s house, Seth sleeps in the bed with them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -- Trying Not To Judge Dear Judge: If Seth is sleeping in the same bed as his mother and a boyfriend, your son may have grounds to ask for full custody, and he should discuss it with his lawyer immediately. Then be a source of support for your son, give your grandson as much love and stability as you can, and encourage his father to promote the strength of character Seth will need to grow up emotionally healthy. Dear Annie: My son and his girlfriend are holding their wedding at my home, which is 2,000 miles away from where they live. The costs for out-of-town guests who wish to attend will be substantial. My future daughterin-law mentioned that her maid of honor would be contacting me about a shower. I was initially enthusiastic, but upon reflection, thought this might add a greater burden on those planning to attend the wedding. Is it appropriate to hold a shower when it is a destination wedding? I feel a little embarrassed to send invitations to my family

members. -- Deborah Dear Deborah: If the shower takes place where your son lives, it actually provides an opportunity for guests who are unable to attend the wedding to celebrate with the brideto-be. Either way, only local guests should be invited, with the exception of the mothers and grandmothers of the bride and groom. Those who find it excessive can decline. Dear Annie: This is in response to “Not Family Yet,” whose fiance’s Grandpa molested his mom and sister and the family has kept the secret under wraps. Covering up to avoid social embarrassment is like hiding evidence of a crime. She needs to tell her fiance that she cannot marry into a family that would conspire to commit a crime against children, and that the family members need to seek help for Grandpa and inform the sister-in-law, or she will have no choice but to break off the engagement and call the authorities. I know from personal experience the lifelong effect childhood sexual abuse causes. -Been There Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
