Bush receives warm welcome for ‘God and country’ speech

President George W. Bush spoke about “God and country” before a crowd of more than 8,500 people at the Sevierville Events Center on Wednesday night.

Bush was a guest speaker for the Celebrators Autumn 2009 event, a Christian conference that is an outreach of Phil Waldrep Ministries. The conference concludes tonight. According to Waldrep Ministries, all 8,500 seats for the event sold out in June. Price for the four-day conference was $125.

allowed to cover the closed event, people leaving the event said Bush spoke about his faith and his time as president, but not specifically about politics.

“I’ll tell you what I got out of it — love of God and country. (Bush) was great,” said Paul Thomas of Almond, N.C. “I loved it,” said Doris Newton of Chattanooga. “I agreed with

everything he said.

“He talked about the freedoms of the Untied States and the then he told us what it meant to be president.”

She said that Bush and other speakers Wednesday night encouraged the audience to be more diligent in standing up for their faith and religious expression.

“He was fantastic,” said Charles Pierce, who came from McDonough, Ga., with his wife, Lorena, for the conference. “It was nothing political. He said he couldn’t have made it without God’s help.”

The parking lot outside the center was filled to capacity; buses filled most slots in the rear. Many were from churches, with licenses plates from states throughout the South including Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Florida.

Children of Pamela Ross name judge, law figures in complaint

SEVIERVILLE — The day before the first anniversary of her death, the children of Pamela Ross filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking $100 million from the people they hold responsible for their mother’s death.

Authorities have said Ross died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound; they say she went inside her home and shot herself on Oct. 6, 2008, after learning that law enforcement officers were outsider her home awaiting a judgment they expected to be issued in foreclosure proceedings on the house.

Judge Jeff Rader, who is named in the complaint, eventually gave her husband, Jimmie Ross, an extension allowing them to file an appeal in the case.

Their daughter, Shannon Smith, said in a phone interview that they hope the complaint will address their questions about how their mother died. “The only thing I really want to say is our mother was cruelly taken from us and it will be addressed in a court of law,� Smith said.

Jimmie Ross has said that he did not believe the account given by authorities of events leading up to his wife’s death. In an interview with The Mountain Press shortly after his wife’s death, he said that she had been on the phone with a friend the morning of her death and told the person that the authorities were outside just before the line disconnected.

The complaint filed by Smith and Ross’ other children names Rader, Sheriff Ron Seals, Sevierville Police Chief Don Myers and officers from both departments as defendants in their individual capacity — meaning they are not

being sued in their capacity as public officials. “The defendants individually and collectively formed a ruse among themselves and others for the purpose of drawing the husband (Jimmie D. Ross) of Pamela Ross away from their residence,� according to the complaint. “Once Jimmie Ross was in court ... The defendants without a warrant, or other proper order of any court recognized in Tennessee or the Untied States came into the property of Pamela Ross and attempted to force her from the residence by trick, coercion, force and violence. “During this process the defendants ... Caused through negligence, personal misconduct and a warrantless search the death of Pamela Ross by wounds from a gunshot.�

The family filed the complaint pro se, meaning without representation by an attorney.

Officers from the Sevierville Police Department and the Sevier County Sheriff’s Department were sent to the Ross home on Lexington Place while Jimmie Ross was in court. Sheriff Ron Seals has said he sent a cruiser and asked Sevierville police to send on as well because Ross had made threats against court and law enforcement officials during earlier proceedings. He sent one of his cruisers, he said, and asked Sevierville police to send one as well.

Ross said last year that he had

not done that.

He had, however, filed several complaints against officials involved in debt collection against him, including federal complaints about tax collection by the IRS. Seals said the officers were waiting on the street when Pamela Ross came outside and asked them why they were there. After they said they were there awaiting orders coming from the foreclosure, she allegedly told them she wanted to be taken to her husband. She went inside, and that’s when an officer reportedly heard a gunshot from inside the home. They entered the house and found her dead inside.

The complaint also notes the state medical examiner never performed an autopsy on Pamela Ross, and says authorities have not provided the family with files on the case.

In addition to Seals, Myers and Rader, the complaint names Mike Voncannon, Matthew Cubberley, Sam Hinson and Brad Wildes as defendants.

Jimmie Ross filed a federal complaint of his own earlier this year against many of the same individuals, claiming they joined his bank in a racket under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and worked together to deprive him of his property.

He is seeking $2.6 million; his complaint does not mention his wife’s death.

Try these scenic drives, hikes From Submitted Reports NATIONAL PARK — The anticipated peak fall color period in Great Smoky Mountains National Park coincides with peak visitation during the last two weeks in October.

Representatives of the Park suggest scenic drives including Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, Newfound Gap Road and Clingmans Dome Road.

Among suggested hikes are Albright Grove and Sugarland Mountain Trail, as well as high elevation hikes to Andrews Bald or Mt. LeConte would be time well spent.

Prior to this popular time, visitors can now enjoy autumn with the start of fall color emerging in the higher elevations and with fewer people on the roads, in

picnic areas, and campgrounds. The weather is incredible. Cooler temperatures, sunny days, and clear blue skies provide breathtaking mountain scenery and perfect conditions for recreating in the natural surroundings.

Ample rainfall throughout the year has set the stage for a robust color season. Autumn color is beginning to appear throughout the Park among those early fall starters, giving a hint of what is to come.

Otherwise it is still pretty green, but with the sunny days and cooler nights starting, color will be progressing through the mountains. Perhaps more notable now are the fall wildflowers including cardinal flower, blackeyed Susan, coreopsis, great blue lobelia, skunk goldenrod, southern

harebell, ironweed, and a variety of asters.

At higher elevations, where the climate is similar to New England’s, color displays start as early as mid-September with the turning of yellow birch, American beech, mountain maple, hobblebush and pin cherry.

Fall colors will develop more rapidly from early to mid-October.

At the lower elevations, some sourwood, sumac, and dogwood trees and red maple have started to show their seasonal reds and bright fruits on trees and shrubs such as heartsa-bustin have appeared.

The autumn color display usually reaches peak at middle and lower elevations between mid-October and early November.

This is the Park’s most spectacular display as it includes the greatest variety of trees.

The family of David Allen Wright Sr. of Sevierville, who passed away Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, would like to announce a celebration of life service in David’s honor. The service will be held at the Roberts United Methodist Church, 1810 Jayell Road, Sevierville, at 4 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009.

David’s son, David Jr., will be giving the eulogy as an expression of his love for his father.

David is and always will be very sadly missed by those who knew and loved him. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend.

May he rest peacefully in God’s loving arms.

Still, Mandrell said she and her father stood strong and eventually won the battle. In the end, she was more than victorious as fan mail started pouring in. “We told them, ‘Just let us do it the way we want for this first show and if it doesn’t work, we’ll never bring it up again,’�

Mandrell says. “At that time cable hadn’t spread everybody out and we had 40 million viewers each week. I believe about half of them wrote in to say how much they loved the gospel music. God took care of it. If you just trust him, he’ll work it out.�

During the presentation, Mandrell’s daughter-inlaw Christy Sutherland, herself a composer and an up-and-coming gospel music recording artist, performed the song, “He Grew the Tree.� Mandrell was the first to record the song and it was her first gospel music single. Since then, it has remained her favorite of all the gospel songs she’s put onto albums, Sutherland said. “She was a musical inspiration of mine from the time I was just a child,� Sutherland said of Mandrell. “Who would have guessed that one day she would be my mother?

She’s such an inspiration to me to this day. I have constant assistance from a legend, and that’s amazing.�

Mandrell also offered high praise for Sutherland. “I couldn’t love Christine anymore if I had given birth to her myself,� she said. “I’m a tough critic, so she comes to me and asks all the time for an evaluation of her music. I find it very hard to find anything to say about it that I’d like to see improved. To say I’m proud of her is an understatement.�

Also during the ceremony, Mandrell was presented a bouquet of pink roses and a personal message from theme park namesake and Sevier County favorite daughter Dolly Parton. In it, Parton expressed regrets she

It was Mandrell’s first visit to Dollywood, though she says she’s well-acquainted with Parton. “Dolly was one of the first people I fell in love with when I moved to Nashville at the ripe old age of 19,� Mandrell said. “I remember I had just met her a few days earlier and I was walking through a parking lot with my father, who was my manager, and she saw us and she said, ‘Hello Barbara! Hello Mr. Mandrell!’ That really meant a lot for me.�

Beyond just greetings in a parking lot, Mandrell said she has come to know Parton as a friend over the years and offered high praise for the local girl. “She is just such a beautiful, amazing person,�

Mandrell said. “She’s a real person. She’s just as nice and genuine in person.�

In addition to Mandrell’s award, the Southern Gospel Music Association also honored eight other practitioners of their art by inducting them into its Hall of Fame, which is located on the grounds at Dollywood.

Those honorees include: n Neil Enloe, who earned considerable recognition for the song “The Statue of Liberty,� which was one of the top 20 songs of 1976. n Ed Hill, who sang with The Stamps and Elvis Presley, and coined the well-known phrase, “Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building.� n Harold Lane, founder of the Gospel Harmony Boys and a composer with more than four decades in gospel music. n Don Light, who started the first booking agency in gospel music and cofounded the Gospel Music Association. n Bill Lyles, a member of the famed Blackwood Brothers singing group. n Elizabeth Mull, producer, promoter and broadcaster whose family put on a gospel music show that still airs on WBIR-TV. n Billy Todd, who toured with the Florida Boys and the Dixie Echoes. n Charlie Waller, a fellow Florida Boys member who also did some producing and promoting, and served as executive producer of Wednesday’s ceremony.

NASHVILLE (AP) — An Alabama woman accused of snatching a newborn from his Tennessee home will remain in federal custody while authorities Wednesday investigated whether she was the only person involved. Tammy Renee Silas, 39, is charged with kidnapping 4-day-old Yahir Anthony Carrillo from Nashville on Sept. 29. The baby was found with Silas three days later at her home in Ardmore, Ala., about 80 miles south.

Yahir wasn’t harmed, but his mother was stabbed repeatedly. Maria Gurrola saw her son only briefly after he was found before the state Department of Children’s Services put him and her three other children in foster care citing safety reasons. DCS hasn’t revealed those safety concerns, but Gurrola’s court-appointed attorney said the parents were under suspicion of trying to sell the baby.

The family was reunited Tuesday after police said Gurrola, 30, and the father, Jose Carrillo, weren’t involved in the crime.

Poll: Third of parents oppose vaccine

ATLANTA (AP) — As the first wave of swine flu vaccine crosses the country, more than a third of parents don’t want their kids vaccinated, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll.

Some parents say they are concerned about side effects from the new vaccine — even though nothing serious has turned up in tests so far — while others say swine flu doesn’t amount to any greater health threat than seasonal flu.

The AP poll found that 38 percent of parents said they were unlikely to give permission for their kids to be vaccinated at school.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Painful cost-cutting and rising sales to automakers helped the nation’s largest aluminum producer return to profitability for the first time in nine months.

Alcoa Inc. on Wednesday also forecast an 11 percent increase in worldwide aluminum demand in the second half of the year, fueled partly by robust growth in China. The lightweight metal is used in everything from airplanes to cars to houses.

Even though Alcoa reported a 71 percent drop in third-quarter profit from a year earlier, the results were a relief after three straight quarterly losses. “We do clearly see growth, substantial growth ... in China,� Alcoa CEO Klaus Kleinfeld told analysts and reporters after the company reported results. “(The) second half of the year is clearly better than the first half in many industries and many regions.�

The Pittsburgh-based company said rising demand from several industries, especially automakers, lifted its revenue compared with the prior three months. Sales to automakers jumped 21 percent from the second quarter.

Although North American auto production dropped 20 percent in the third quarter yearover-year, the aluminum

content in vehicles may have risen as automakers move to meet higher federal fuel economy standards by making cars and trucks lighter, said Michael Robinet, a vice president at CSM Worldwide, an auto industry consulting firm near Detroit.

Investors cheered the news, sending Alcoa’s shares up 5.9 percent in after-hours trade.

Alcoa earned $77 million, or 8 cents per share, for the three months ended Sept. 30. That compared with profit of $268 million, or 33 cents per share, a year earlier.

Revenue tumbled 34 percent to $4.62 billion from the same period a year earlier, but was up 9 percent from the second quarter of 2009.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal budget deficit tripled to a record $1.4 trillion for the 2009 fiscal year that ended last week, congressional analysts said Wednesday.

The Congressional Budget Office estimate, while expected, is bad news for the White House and its allies in Congress as they press ahead with health care overhaul legislation that could cost $900 billion over the next decade.

The unprecedented flood of red ink flows from several factors, including a big drop in tax revenues due to the recession, $245 billion in emergency spending on the Wall Street bailout and the takeover of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Then there is almost $200 billion in costs from President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus bill, as well as increases in programs such as unemployment benefits and food stamps.

The previous record deficit was $459 billion and was set just last year.

Carter seeks to boost malaria fight

OUANAMINTHE, Haiti (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter traveled to Haiti and the Dominican Republic to meet political leaders, health workers and malaria victims Wednesday in hopes of jump-starting efforts to eradicate the disease in the Caribbean.

The battle against the mosquito-borne disease in the neighboring countries has been frustrating, with health officials complaining of a lack of cooperation between both country’s governments.

Carter said on his visit to Ouanaminthe and to Dajabon in the Dominican Republic, just across a river border separating the two countries, that he hopes to expand a $200,000 pilot project established in those towns by the nonprofit Carter Center to curb malaria’s spread.

Lopsided tax system is unfair

“The government who robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul,” George Bernard Shaw once said.

For a socialist, Shaw demonstrated good sense with that quotation.

Unfortunately, America has become a laboratory in which his hypothesis is being tested.

The theory of government I was taught says that government provides benefits, primarily security, to the entire population. In return we pay taxes. But lately the government has been a distributor of special privileges, taking money from some and giving it to others. America is now about evenly split between those who pay income taxes and those who consume them.

The Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center recently disclosed that close to half of all households will pay no income tax this year (http://tinyurl. com/nzm59k). Some will pay less than zero — that is, they’ll get money from those of us who do pay taxes.

The Tax Policy Center adds that this year the average income-tax rate for the bottom 40 percent of earners will be negative and that their cash subsidy will equal 10 percent of the total amount the income tax brings in, thanks to the Earned Income Tax Credit and President Obama’s “Making Work Pay” program.

The view from the top also shows the lopsidedness of the tax system. The top 20 percent of earners makes about 53 percent of the income in America but pays 91 percent of the income tax.

The top 1 percent pays 36 percent. The IRS says the bottom half of earners pays less than 3 percent.

This presents a serious problem because government has such vast powers to dispense favors. As Shaw suggested, people who pay no tax will not hesitate to vote for politicians who promise big spending. Why not? They will get stuff without having to pay for it.

Yes, working people who pay no income tax still pay taxes: sales tax and payroll (Social Security and Medicare) taxes. But the income tax is big and visible, so it’s a problem that a growing number of people don’t pay, but get benefits from those who do.

The built-in unfairness of the tax system has prompted a range of taxreform proposals, such as a flat tax and replacing the income tax with a sales tax. These alternatives are better, but they have their drawbacks, too. For that reason, there is something more urgent than tax reform: spending reform.

The true burden of government, the late Milton Friedman said, is not the tax level but the spending level.

Taxation is just one way for the government to get money. The other ways -- borrowing and inflation -- are also burdens on the people. The best way to lighten the tax burden is to lessen the spending burden. If government spends less, it takes less. And if it takes less, the tax system will weigh less heavily on us all.

Once again, we find wisdom in Adam Smith: “Little else is requisite to carry a state to the highest degree of opulence from the lowest barbarism but peace, easy taxes, and a tolerable administration of justice: all the rest being brought about by the natural course of things.”

‘Boo,’ not ‘boo-hoo’

Now is the time to start thinking about safety for All Hallows Eve It is still a little over three weeks before what is probably the second favorite holiday of the year for most in the knee-socks age group. It’s not the jolly, old elf and opening presents under the Christmas tree, but it is ghosts and goblins and collecting enough candy to break out double doses of Pepto.

Parents are scouring department stores, drug stores and dollar stores to find bargains on costumes that will transform their little darlings into Disney characters, pirates, Hannah Montana, superheroes, baseball or football players, ballerinas, and all manner of imps and goblins.

But, as Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, points out in an e-mail, this is time to start preparing to make Halloween a safe holiday — a time to say “boo” instead of “boo-hoo.”

The organization points out that potentially hazardous costumes or accessories, tainted candy and crossing the street without supervision are among the concerns that should be addressed before children leave the house. Furthermore,

the organization says, children ages 5-14 are four more times likely to be killed while walking on Halloween compared with any other evening of the year.

Here are some of the things the experts say parents should do as precautionary measures: n Avoid costumes with excessive flowing fabric, such as capes or sleeves.

Loose clothing can easily brush up against a jack-o-lantern or open fire causing a costume to burst into flames. n Make sure the child’s costume fits properly. Oversized costumes and footwear, such as clown or adult shoes, can cause children to trip and fall. Avoid wearing hats that will slide over their eyes. n Accessorize with flexible props.

Inflexible props can cause serious injury in case of a fall. n Make sure face paint or cosmetics are nontoxic and hypoallergenic. A loose-fitting mask can obstruct a child’s vision. If a mask is worn, be certain it fits securely. Make sure eyeholes are big enough for full vision.

n If possible, choose a brightly colored costume that drivers can spot easily. If not, decorate the outfit with reflective tape and stickers. n Always supervise children under 13. Other children should trick-or-treat in groups. Attach the name, address and phone number of children under 13 to their clothes in case they get separated from adults. n Children should go only to well-lit houses and remain on the porch within street view. n Teach children to cross only at crosswalks and intersections and to look both ways before crossing. Remind children to stay on sidewalks and to walk, not run. n Parents of food allergic children must read every candy label in their child’s Halloween bag to avoid a potentially life-threatening situation for the children.

Don’t wait until the last minute.

Make sure your children have fun. And remember, the life you save might be your own child’s.

Obama not making it easier for schoolchildren Things aren’t getting any easier for America’s school children.

First, there was No Child Left Behind, the federal program which, despite many flaws, has helped call needed attention to underperforming schools. Now, President Barack Obama wants longer school days, and possibly longer school years.

Making things tougher, however, is precisely the point, and while the idea may not quickly win public support, it deserves serious consideration.

Obama and his education secretary, Arne Duncan, have called attention to the amount of time students spend in school, because school calendars in the United

States are based on outdated priorities and are too short to give students the tools they need to compete on a global stage. ...

Children in Europe and Asia spend 190 to 240 days a year in school; in Europe, the typical school day is about eight hours.

As an Associated Press report has noted, kids in Asian countries that tend to outscore the U.S. in math and science spend fewer hours in school than their American counterparts, but a greater proportion of their school day is spent on math and science.

But is merely extending school time beneficial?

When the Brookings Institution looked at math scores in countries

that added math instruction time, it found that scores rose significantly, especially where minutes were added to the day, rather than days to the year. ...

There are many who will criticize these suggestions. A seemingly opposite trend is exemplified by an October 2008 study for the American Academy of Pediatricians, which concluded that children are overscheduled, under stress and in need of more unstructured time to play. ...

The quality of instruction is certainly important, a notion that has not been lost on leaders from Duncan to Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen to Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, who is seeing extended

hours used in Metro charter and magnet schools.

Perhaps it is both: Teachers and students may be more fully engaged in the learning process, even with only 10 to 15 minutes more time each day to absorb and review the material. ...

Yes, the president and his education secretary are looking at the matter with an eye to American competitiveness — as they should.

But it also is an issue of individual growth. More time in school can translate into less time spent on the things that get many bored kids in trouble, such as drugs and gangs.

Consider it an investment, of time, in our nation’s future.

Calipari ready to stop talking, start coaching

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — John Calipari came to Kentucky to coach basketball. It only seems like he’s running for governor.

In the six months since the Wildcats lured him away from Memphis — making him the highest paid coach in the country in the process — Calipari has been named a Kentucky Colonel, a Duke of Hazard (a town in eastern Kentucky), spent time in a coal mine and been welcomed as the savior of college basketball’s all-time winningest program.

“This seat that I’m in, I can feel the importance to this state,” Calipari said Wednesday during the annual tip-off luncheon in Louisville. “I respect that and I’m humbled by it.”

But he’s not scared by it. If anything, he’s embraced it.

The coach who says he doesn’t have an e-mail address and lacks a computer in his office is edging toward 1 million followers on Twitter. He’s got nearly 60,000 fans on Facebook and a Web site that seems to contain a new idea, promotion or blurb every time you hit the refresh button.

Hundreds of people camped out for up to three days to get tickets to Big Blue Madness, the annual season kickoff at Rupp Arena.

All this commotion, all this attention and he hasn’t coached a game yet.

He knows things could turn south quickly. He chided the nearly 2,000 fans at Wednesday’s luncheon for embracing Tubby Smith before essentially running him off to Minnesota after the 2007 season.

“Two years later, you need me,” he said.

The truth, he added, was that he needed Kentucky too.

He knows expectations are high after bringing in arguably the best recruiting class since Rick Pitino was routinely leading the Wildcats to the Final Four in the 1990s.

By signing prep stars like John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins have some experts picking the Wildcats to win the national title, and Calipari knows hotel rooms in Indianapolis — site of next spring’s Final Four — are filled with reservations from Kentucky fans.

He loves it. He also cautions, however, that the road will be bumpy.

“That doesn’t mean everything is always going to be rosy,” he said. “There will be problems. That doesn’t mean I won’t stub my toe.”

It’s part of the process.

meld together a roster of newcomers and holdovers from Billy Gillispie’s rocky tenure.

“I’ve got six new players that think they poop ice cream,” Calipari said. “I’ve got six returning players that naturally think it’s their turn.

I’ve got to get these players together and they’ve got to trust each other. They’ve got to respect each other and over time that’s got to turn into affection. That affection has got to turn to love.”

It might take awhile.

Calipari has spent the last month trying to install the basics of his dribble-drive offense during individual workouts. The results have been less than spectacular.

“It’s like I’m playing with 12 Martians,” he said. “They have no idea what’s going on.”

They’ll figure it out, eventually, if they play like they have something to prove instead of buying into their own hype.

“We’ve got to create our own happiness, we can’t have that created for us,” he said. “If our self worth is generated by someone else’s opinion of your work, you’re going to up and down. We’re not. We’re going to have fun.”

The real fun for Calipari will begin next week when practice starts. He called his time with his players “heaven” and praised their efforts in the classroom and on the floor.

Wall was one of five freshmen to come in for summer classes even though it’s widely acknowledged he’ll only be at Kentucky for a year. Calipari said Wall’s grades were tops among the freshmen over the summer, though the studying didn’t get in the way of Wall hoisting shots at the school’s practice facility at the stroke of midnight.

It’s the kind of dedication he expects of all his players as well as himself. Calipari’s spent the last six months talking about the future.

He’s finally ready for it to begin.

“Let’s rip the rearview mirror out of the car, let’s just look forward,” he said.

By JASON DAVIS Sports Editor PIGEON FORGE — In her team’s first year in District 3-AA, Jessica Sterling and the Lady Tigers quickly proved they were among the cream of the crop.

After losing their first two district matchups this season, the Lady Tigers (12-4, 10-2 in 3-AA) won 10 straight, putting them tied for first at the conclusion of the regular season.

Now the coach and players are reaping the rewards.

Coach Sterling was named Co-Coach of the Year on Friday at the district coaches’ meeting, while Danielle Rauhuff was named Co-Player of the year.

“Danielle at times will be a spiker, a digger or a setter,” coach Sterling said.

“She’s probably our most versatile player — she can do it all.

“She’ll adjust her game to suit what best helps the team.”

On her own honor, the coach was more reticent.

“It’s kind of cool. In the old district we didn’t get to do that,” Sterling said.

“So it was kind of cool that

the other coaches thought that I did a good job.”

Sterling credited her success though, to Rauhuff her team.

She calls this team her most cohesive unit since she took over the job at PFHS. “We had really good communication throughout the year, playing together, and we’ve actually been on the same page,” Sterling said.

“Volleyball is one of those sports where you can’t just have one standout player, you’ve got to have the team to make it work out.

“This year we really gelled together better than we have in the past.”

In addition to Sterling and Rauhuff’s awards, other Lady Tigers also received honors.

Early start for SEC teams this weekend

By NOAH TRISTER AP Sports Writer LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Rise and shine, SEC fans.

This week’s tailgating might be a bit unusual.

Biscuits instead of burgers? A cup of coffee before those cold drinks? And you might want to leave the portable TV at home, unless Saturday morning cartoons are your thing.

Five of the Southeastern Conference’s seven games this weekend are scheduled to start by 12:30 p.m. local time, an upside-down schedule that protects a CBS doubleheader later in the day. By the time topranked Florida and No. 4 LSU kick off Saturday night, the rest of the league should

be finished playing.

The undercard is left for the earlier time slots, so coaches and players — and fans — will have to adjust.

“We encourage our players to start getting to bed a little earlier. We think a lot of them stay up past midnight just goofing off the way most college kids do,” South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said. “I’ve always said, it don’t matter what time you play because they don’t ask you what time you want to play. They tell you.”

SEC teams regularly play early games, but they’re hardly the norm. Last week only two games started before 6 p.m., and the biggest matchups are usually in the late afternoon and evening.

That’s also true Saturday.

No. 20 Mississippi hosts No. 3 Alabama at 2:30 p.m., and Florida-LSU is set for 7.

Both games are being aired

by CBS, which is why so many other teams are playing early.

“Those are exclusive windows,” SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom said. “So the only window that’s non-exclusive is the early afternoon.”

The SEC has deals with CBS and ESPN, and every team in the league will be on television this weekend. Any conference would love that exposure, but it can limit flexibility. For example, Mississippi State hosts Houston at 11:30 a.m. on ESPNU. If that game weren’t on TV, it could be

played at a different time.

For the most part, teams take the early starts in stride.

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino, whose Razorbacks kick off at 11 a.m. against No. 17 Auburn, will change the routine for a game like this.

“We’ll get them off the field a little quicker on Thursday, so we try to get their legs back,” Petrino said. “We’ll get out of our meetings a little bit earlier on Friday night, get them in bed a little earlier, and then obviously they have to get up early and get going.

Smokies are well-represented in ’09 MLB playoffs SEVIERVILLE — With the Minnesota Twins’ victory Tuesday night over the Detroit Tigers to close out a memorable American League Central pennant race, the list of contenders for this year’s Major League Baseball World Championship is now complete. The Tennessee Smokies are well represented in this year’s MLB playoffs as a total of 13 players and/or coaches were former members of the Smokies organization at one

time or another.

Seven of the 13 on the list wear the St. Louis Cardinals red and white. The group is led by 2005 Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter, who went

17-4 with a 2.24 ERA in 2009, and 2009 National League All-Star Yadier Molina (.304 BA, 7 HR, 56 RBI). Rounding out the list for St. Louis are pitchers Brad Thompson (2-6, 4.84) and Josh Kinney (1-0, 8.80), INF Skip Schumaker (.303/4/35) and OF Rick Ankiel (.231/11/38). St. Louis Manager Tony La Russa is in his 14th season with the team, and has led the Cardinals during that time to eight division titles, two N.L. pennants and

a World Championship title in 2006.

The Cardinals will be facing the Colorado Rockies in the first round of the National League Divisional Series.

Rockies Third Base Coach Glenallen Hill, a former Smokies player, is in his third year with the Rockies organization.

In the other National League Divisional Series matchup, the Los Angeles Dodgers will square off against the Philadelphia Phillies.

former Smokies, infielders Casey Blake (.280/18/79) and Orlando Hudson (.283/9/62), now play for the Dodgers, while the lone former Smokies player representing the defending champion Phillies is OF Jayson Werth (.268/36/99).

Rookie cut from Florida’s Meyer seeking balance Ravens dies in Washington

By TIM KLASS Associated Press Writer SEATTLE — Tony Fein, an Iraq war veteran and NFL rookie linebacker who played with the Baltimore Ravens during the preseason, has died of unexplained causes after collapsing at a friend’s house on the Kitsap Peninsula of Washington state.

Fein, 27, an undrafted rookie free agent from Mississippi, was lying face down and unconscious, vomiting and barely breathing when medics arrived at a house outside Port Orchard just before 9 a.m PDT Tuesday, said Mike Wernet, a battalion chief and medical officer with South Kitsap Fire & Rescue.

The medics put a breathing tube down Fein’s throat after he stopped breathing and administered medication, but he went into cardiac arrest during the drive to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton, across Puget Sound from Seattle, and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9:48 a.m. PDT Tuesday, Wernet told The Associated Press.

A man and woman who were present described Fein as a friend who was staying with them. They told the aid crew they awoke to find him unresponsive and vomiting. “They didn’t really give us a lot of information about what had happened the night before,� apparently because they were upset, Wernet said. “They didn’t indicate anything out of the ordinary.�

There were no obvious wounds or signs of alcohol or other drug abuse, and nothing indicated foul play, he added.

The Kitsap County sheriff’s office wasn’t summoned, and Wernet said he knew of no subsequent contact with his agency to indicate deputies were investigating. Deputy Scott E. Wilson, a spokesman in the sheriff’s office, did not return a call for comment Wednesday.

An autopsy won’t be conducted before Thursday and no report will be issued before all toxicology and other tests are complete, likely in six to eight weeks, said Allen G. Gerdes, Kitsap County chief deputy coroner.

We’re unbelievably disappointed about the news.�

Fein’s agent, Milton D. Hobbs, a lawyer in Oxford, Miss., said he last spoke with Fein on Friday and since the death had talked with the Fein’s sister, mother and some friends. He would not discuss a possible cause of death. “He was working out and we were discussing football opportunities. That was still his goal,� Hobbs said. “We talked about Canada.�

Some Canadian Football League teams had expressed interest in Fein before he joined the Ravens but there had been no contacts since he was cut, the agent said.

Fein was arrested on Aug. 23 and charged with misdemeanor assault on a police officer after an incident at a restaurant at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in which the officer reportedly mistook his cellular telephone for a handgun. A trial was scheduled Wednesday, but prosecutors notified Fein’s attorney last Thursday that they planned to dismiss the case because of conflicting witness accounts, state’s attorney spokeswoman Marty Burns said.

Fein played quarterback for South Kitsap High School before graduating in 2000. At age 19 he enlisted in the Army and spent 2 1/2 years in Iraq as a 19 Delta reconnaissance scout.

He later enrolled at Scottsdale, Ariz., Community College, became one of the nation’s top junior college recruits and played for Ole Miss in 2007 and 2008. In two seasons at Ole Miss, he had 136 tackles (77 solo) in 24 games, according to the school’s Web site.

Regardless of who plays quarterback for top-ranked Florida on Saturday night at No. 4 LSU, coach Urban Meyer would like to see more from his passing game.

The Gators (4-0, 2-0) rank 58th in the country in passing, averaging nearly 219 yards a game. They rate even worse against teams from the Sunshine State, falling behind Florida State (17th), Florida Atlantic (25th), Miami (37th), Florida International (41st) and South Florida (54th).

Former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and backup John Brantley have combined for 10 touchdown passes and just one interception, but Florida’s success has come mostly on the ground. With Tebow, Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey leading the way, the Gators top the nation in rushing at nearly 308 yards a game.

Meyer would like to see more balance. “When you’re playing the group we’re playing this week, you’re going to have to be balanced,� Meyer said. “We’re a little unbalanced right now.�

The Gators have excuses: Starting receiver Deonte Thompson (hamstring) missed the last two games, and fellow receivers Carl Moore (back) and Andre Debose (hamstring) are likely out for the year.

Receiver Riley Cooper and tight end Aaron Hernandez also missed time because of the flu.

Also, Florida has enjoyed early, double-digit leads in every game. “It’s 31-0 after the first quarter (against Kentucky),�

Meyer said. “You’re not going to be zinging the ball all over the place. And you had injuries and illness at receiver. We’ve got to get that going. We’ve all done this a long time. You have to be balanced to win a big game, and right now, we’re not.� ——— RESURGENT RUN: LSU running back Charles Scott decided to return for his senior year instead of turning pro. Up until last week at Georgia he wasn’t having the kind of season he envisioned when he made the

decision.

The 234-pound running back had two late touchdowns against the Bulldogs, one on a short powerful run through the line, the other on a tackle-breaking 33-yard scamper in the final minute. He finished with 95 yards on 19 carries. “Just to come out and have good game like that and let my team know they can rely on me definitely made a difference in the confidence level,� Scott said.

Scott rushed for 1,174 yards as a junior and could have turned pro, but returned for his senior year and proceeded to put up numbers well below his previous standard. In his first four games he rushed for 52, 49, 63 and 15 yards.

Scott refused to blame the offensive line. “It’s hard to say what was what, because maybe they were blocking it perfectly and I was missing cuts,� he said. “This game, we were on the same page. It is far off his record-setting freshman season, but coach Nick Saban said the focus on Jones helps other players get open. “Without developing statistics, you’re doing a lot to help your team win,� Saban said. “We continue to try to get him the ball. Gatlinburg Recreation Department is now accepting rosters for a 5-on-5 mens basketball league. The league is open to players 18-and-older and will play on Wednesdays from 6-10 p.m. The cost is $250 per team, and the deadline for entry is Oct. 19. The season will run from Oct. 21 to February.

Gatlinburg tennis round-robin events

There will be another tennis round-robin event 3 p.m. this coming Sunday at the Don Watson Tennis Center at Mynatt Park. It will be a doubles format for players 16-years and above, limited to the first 24 players to arrive.

Dear Annie: I work for a family company and am grateful to have a job in this economy.

But while we employees have had benefits drastically cut, the owners have bought new luxury homes and cars and just returned from an overseas vacation that included a safari.

I am a loyal employee, but it seems we are the only ones making sacrifices for the good of the company. Morale is low, and I can no longer be the cheerleader I once was.

I want my employer to know that, despite how they have treated us, I will continue to do my best, but there are other employees who don’t feel this way. How can we get the boss to take a closer look at the message he is sending before everyone walks out? I still love this company and want it to succeed. -Unappreciated Dear Unappreciated: The problem is, your boss knows that no matter how he treats his employees, it will be difficult for them to find another job in this economy. He takes advantage of the fact that, despite the grumbling, they are not likely to leave. This is a terrible way to treat the people who work for you.

Since you care about the health of the company, appoint yourself the spokesperson for the staff and see if you can get a few people together to speak to the boss privately. (There is safety in numbers.) Tell him he deserves to enjoy the fruits of his labor, but you’ve noticed it lowers morale when he appears to be flaunting his wealth

at the expense of his struggling employees. Say that you want his company to be successful and a great place to work, and consequently, you worry when your fellow employees don’t feel valued and appreciated. Then ask how you can help.

Dear Annie: I have been friends for more than 30 years with a gentleman who now lives in a nursing home. He is hale and hearty with an alert and active mind, and I enjoy our twicemonthly visits. However, although he wears hearing aids, the only way to effectively communicate is to speak quite loudly.

While I have no problem doing so when we are alone, it can obviously be disturbing to other visitors. In addition, we occasionally go to museums, restaurants and historical sites, and find ourselves facing the choice of disturbing those seated near us or remaining silent, which, of course, negates the purpose of getting together.

What is the proper way to act in situations like this? Should I continue to speak loudly even though it annoys others, or would it be better to diminish our mutual enjoyment by keeping conversation to a minimum? -- Want To Do What’s Right Dear Want: It is OK to raise your voice, but it also helps to avoid places where there is a great deal of ambient

noise. Busy restaurants with loud music would create more difficulty hearing than a quiet meal in someone’s house. We wouldn’t worry too much about the common areas of a nursing home where visitors understand hearing problems. Otherwise, keep your conversation to a minimum when you are in an enclosed public space, and when you want to talk, consider taking a walk or visiting in your home. Also be sure to look directly at your friend when you are speaking. Most people do more lip-reading than you might imagine.

Dear Annie: This is in response to “Unsure Daughter,” whose estranged father is dying and she doesn’t know if she should see him. I, too, came from the Bad Dads Club and was faced with a similar situation. I decided to leave the past in the past and start over.

Thirteen years later, I have no regrets. I spent my father’s final months getting to know him and expressing my feelings. This is an opportunity most people don’t get, so I advise anyone in this situation to take the opportunity to say what you need to.
