NATIONAL PARK — Great Smoky Mountains National Park spokesman Bob Miller jokingly used the phrase, “There’s gold in them thar hills,” in announcing a study released Wednesday that shows the Smokies bring in

more revenue for surrounding communities than any other national park. The report was conducted by a researcher at Michigan State University, who compiled economic information from so-called gateway communities around the 391 national park units. The study found the

Smokies isn’t just the mostvisited park, it’s also head and shoulders above the rest in revenue generation, bringing in more than nine million visitors and $800 million last year. That amount is impressive on its own given the growing recession that plagued the nation throughout 2008, but seems nearly staggering when compared with other data in the report. The next-highestgrossing unit is Grand Canyon National Park, one of the bestknown symbols of the park system, which brought in just more

than half what the Smokies did at $423 million, Miller said. That’s followed by Yellowstone ($345 million), the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway ($342 million) and Yosemite ($292 million). Though it’s not clear how much of the Smokies money is spent in Sevier County, it’s long been established the park is one of the top economic drivers in the area. Relay For Life celebrating birthdays in 2010 By GAIL CRUTCHFIELD Community Editor PIGEON FORGE — Happy Birthday was the message of the day and will be the message of the year for the 2010 Sevier County Relay For Life as organizers and teams kick off fundraising for the annual benefit for the American Cancer Society. 2010 marks the 25th birthday of Relay For Life, which was born in Tacoma, Wash., in May of 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt circled the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound for 24 hours and raised $27,000 to fight cancer. The American Cancer Society is encouraging Relay For Life participants and other supporters to help create more birthdays by raising money for

Jean Frazier Ailey, age 87 of Seymour passed away on October 27, 2009. She was a lifelong resident of the Boyds Creek and Seymour Communities. She was the last surviving child of H.A. and Julia Thomas Frazier. She is also preceded in death by brother, Howard “Sonny” Frazier, sisters Sue Gibson and Rhea Wider Robello. Jean was a long time member of Boyd’s Creek Baptist Church where she loved her Sunday School Class. Her life was devoted to being a good wife and mother. She is survived by husband of sixty-three years, Hal Ailey; sons and daughters-in-law, Ric and Beverly Norton Ailey and Rob and Janice Kerr Ailey; grandsons, Brian and wife Anna Fain and Chad Fain; great-grandchildren, Jack, Luke and Isabel Fain and Ricky Lee Norton who fondly called her Momma Jean; nephews, Greg Gibson, Jerry Widner and Howie Frazier; special greatnieces, Rebecca and Natalie Gibson; several other nieces and nephews; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth Gibson, Wilda Frazier, Ann Pierce, Lucille Brown, and Norman Ailey; special friend, Barbara Morgan; devoted caregivers, Linda Moore and Linda Arwood. Anita Bowman Kelley went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center. Mrs. Kelley was a member of First United Methodist Church of Sevierville. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, she was a former teacher and loved by her students, especially for her work with the annual staff at South High in Knoxville. Mrs. Kelley had a giving heart, volunteering at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center, supporting the Alzheimer’s Association-Sevier County Chapter, and active for many years in the South Knoxville Optimist Club. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 52 years, Edward T. Kelley; parents, H. W. and Frances Bowman; brothers, H.W. Bowman, Jr. and Jack Bowman; sister, Imogene Brown. She is survived by sister, Henrietta Blevins, Seminole, FL; sister-in-law, Geraldine Bowman, Corryton, Tennessee; brother-in-law, Bill Brown, Powell, TN; numerous nieces and nephews; and close friends in both Sevierville and Clearwater, FL. For the past several years, she has received dedicated care from the staff at Wellington in Sevierville and her devoted niece, Janice Perry, Seymour, Tennessee. We try to make it very real.” Students made decisions

by what appeared on the monitor and what the SimMan did, she added. If medicine is administered that causes the heart rate to drop in a real person, the heart rate will drop in the SimMan. “It’s been very helpful,” Cleland said of the new teaching tool. “The beeps and other sounds stressed me out at first, but then I just became used to it.” WSCC director of Educational Services Ronnie Taylor was impressed at the poise the students displayed while performing the demonstration. “They knew exactly what to do — there was no panic.” Debbie Dowling of the Robert F. ‘Ringleader’ convicted in slayings of state couple KNOXVILLE (AP) — The man accused of being the ringleader of a carjacking that turned into the rapes and murders of a Tennessee couple was convicted Wednesday on nearly all counts, and now faces the chance of the death penalty. “We finally have the justice that the kids deserve,� said Mary Newsom, whose 23-year-old son Christopher Newsom died with his 21-year-old girlfriend Channon Christian in the January 2007 attack. The seven men and five women on the jury deliberated a little more than 8 hours before returning the verdict against Lemaricus Davidson, 28. The same panel will hear evidence Thursday on whether to sentence him to life in prison or death. “There is but one verdict that is acceptable to us,� said Hugh Newsom, Christopher Newsom’s father. “Death,� said Gary and Deena Christian, parents of Channon Christian.

Davidson was convicted on 35 of 38 counts, including premeditated murder, felony murder, robbery, kidnapping, rape of Christian and theft, and three lesser charges of facilitating Newsom’s rape. The defendant, wearing glasses and a dark sweater and slacks, showed no emotion as the verdicts were announced. Christian’s father rocked back and forth and occasionally pumped his fist. Prosecutors won’t let him address the jury Thursday “just ’cause they think I might blow up. They might be right,� he said. Christian’s mother and brother are expected to give jury statements. Prosecutors and defense attorneys had no comment as they left the courtroom. Prosecutors contended Davidson was the ringleader in the crimes in which at least three others were allegedly involved. The defense portrayed him as a bystander to the crimes but not the killer.

The 2007 killings became a racially charged case: The victims were white and middle class, and the defendants poor and black. Some conservative Internet commentators and white supremacist agitators claimed it didn’t get the same attention as white-onblack hate crimes. Authorities said race didn’t appear to be a factor. The crimes were so gruesome a prosecution staffer fainted during testimony and the FBI is investigating death threats against Davidson’s courtappointed attorneys. The prosecution presented six days of testimony linking Davidson to the crimes through DNA evidence from semen on Christian’s body and fingerprints on a bank statement in her vehicle and on the trash bags that wrapped her body. Jurors twice saw a videotape of police questioning Davidson in which he blamed the murders on others. “Selling dope, that’s what I do. I don’t kill people.�

and perpetuator. “This park is so important to everything we do,� Pigeon Forge Mayor Keith Whaley said during recent festivities for the park’s 75th anniversary. “Thinking about the impact the park has had on the entire region and Sevier County specifically, it’s just amazing.� Tourism, both from park visitors in the area and others, brings in about $1.5 billion annually in Sevier County, according to University of Tennessee Tourism Institute Director Steve Morse. That helps not only keep local taxes relatively low, but also gives jobs to plenty of people here. The report suggests there are 14,569 jobs in the tourism industry in the gateway communities that would not exist if the park didn’t. Somewhat surprisingly, the park itself isn’t employing a great deal of those folks. The Smokies ranked fifth in the amount of payroll given to its employees at $14,213,000 in 2008. That’s far below Yellowstone’s $23,924,000, though that park is considerably larger than the Smokies and therefore takes more staff. While local officials like Whaley certainly see the impact the park has, park

development of support facilities like restaurants and hotels to surrounding communities. “Early planners recognized that nearly all of the infrastructure to serve the new visitors could be developed outside the park,� he said. “By choosing not to build hotels, restaurants, gas stations and the like inside the park, we have been able to minimize the impact of those facilities on the park while maximizing the opportunity for local communities to offer whatever goods and services visitors might want or need.� All totaled, the report indicates there were just shy of 275 million visitors to the parks in 2008, with those folks spending $11.56 billion in gateway communities. The National Park

Service employs a total of 24,954 people and has a total payroll of $1.2 million. The figures in the study were derived from a money generation model that begins with a park’s visitation, party size, length of stay and proportion of local to non-local visitors. Those statistics are combined with locally indexed cost estimates for restaurants, lodging, amusements, locally-purchased fuel and transportation, and retail spending, Miller said.

Officer rescues cub hit on highway ERWIN (AP) — Heather Rheams is accustomed to handling animals in her job as a K-9 officer for the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department. But on Sunday, it was a different type of animal with whom she got acquainted. With help from Tyler Lynch, a 911 dispatcher, she transported about a 50-pound cub bear to Johnny Lynch’s animal sanctuary in Unicoi. The bear had been struck by a vehicle on Interstate 26 between the Flag

Pond exit and the North Carolina border, bled at the mouth and suffered a concussion. “He’s not much of a snuggle monkey anymore,” she said. “He was at first.” Rheams does not think her actions were anything heroic, but Sheriff Kent Harris gives her a pat on the back. “Those bears, even at that size, can become real aggressive,” he said. “They’re a wild animal. She scares me because she has no fear.”

Harris said he warned Rheams to look out for the mother because it would not have been happy to see the sergeant handling the cub. The mother did not show up, and the sheriff suspects it had been killed. Rheams said four people in a vehicle that did not hit the bear stopped on the side of the road and circled the animal to prevent it from entering traffic again. She said the bear was a little wobbly. One of the people in the other car wiped the

bear’s nose and then laid the tissue on the ground. “The bear actually stuck his nose back in the tissue a couple of times,” Rheams said. “I’m sure he wasn’t doing it on purpose. However, it was very amusing.” When Tyler Lynch arrived, he put the leash around the bear’s neck and dragged him to his pickup truck. Rheams’ police dog weighs about 85 pounds, so lifting the bear on the bed of the truck was not a major chore.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Former television game show host Bob Barker, who ended episodes of “The Price is Right” by asking viewers to spay and neuter their pets, donated $1 million Barker to Drury University to establish a professorship on animal rights that he hopes will lead to a full undergraduate degree program. Barker, who graduated from the small liberal arts school in 1947 with a degree in economics, said Tuesday that he hopes the school will eventually be able to offer a program of studies that would train them to be animal rights activists and to respect animals.

Freedom works; give it a chance

Much of what government does is based on the premise that people can’t do things for themselves. So government must do it for them. More often than not, the result is a ham-handed, bumbling, one-size-fits-all approach that leaves the intended beneficiaries worse off. Of course, this resulting failure is never blamed on the political approach -- on the contrary, failure is taken to mean the government solution was not extravagant enough. We who have confidence in what free people can achieve have long believed that government should not venture beyond its narrow sphere of providing physical security. It should not attempt to cure every social ill. So it’s good to learn that serious scholars have demonstrated that our intuitions are right. Free people, given the chance, solve what many “experts” think are problems that require state intervention. For that reason, Elinor Ostrom’s winning of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences ought to kindle a new interest in freedom. (See my earlier column here: http:// tinyurl.com/yj883po.) Ostrom made her mark through field studies that show people solving one of the more vexing problems: efficient management of a common-pool resource (CPR), such as a pasture or fishery. With an unowned “commons,” each individual has an incentive to get the most out of it without putting anything back. If I take fish from a common fishing area, I benefit completely from those fish. But if I make an investment to increase the future number of fish, others benefit, too. So why should I risk making the investment? I’ll wait for others to do it. But everyone else faces the same free-rider incentive. So we end up with a depleted resource and what Garrett Harden called “the tragedy of the commons” (http:// tinyurl.com/37nhdm). Except, says Ostrom, we often don’t. There is also an “opportunity of the commons.” While most politicians conclude that, depending on the resource, efficient management requires either privatization or government ownership, Ostrom finds examples of a third way: “self-organizing forms of collective action,” as she put it in an interview a few years ago (http://tinyurl.com/yhw3u5x). Her message is to be wary of government promises. “Field studies in all parts of the world have found that local groups of resource users, sometimes by themselves and sometimes with the assistance of external actors, have created a wide diversity of institutional arrangements for cooperating with common-pool resources.” She has studied, for example, self-governing irrigation systems in Nepal and found successes never anticipated in the textbooks. “Irrigation systems built and governed by the farmers themselves are on average in better repair, deliver more water, and have higher agricultural productivity than those provided and managed by a government agency. ... (F) armers craft their own rules, which frequently offset the perverse incentives they face in their particular physical and cultural settings. These rules may be almost invisible to outsiders. ...” In “Governing the Commons,” she writes about self-governed commons in Switzerland, Japan, the Philippines and elsewhere that date back hundreds of years. For example, in the alpine village of Tobel, Switzerland, herdsmen “tend village cattle on communally owned alpine meadows” under rules of an association created in 1483. The rules govern who has access to the grazing lands and how many cows a herdsman can place there, preventing overgrazing. The cattle owners themselves run the association and handle the monitoring. Sanctions are imposed for violation of the rules, but compliance is high. Don’t mistake the association for government. Rather, it is a private co-op designed for a narrow purpose. “All of the Swiss institutions used to govern commonly owned alpine meadows have one obvious similarity — the appropriators themselves make all the major decisions about the use of the CPR.” Solutions imposed by external authority were not necessary — and usually self-defeating: “Academics, aid donors, international nongovernmental organizations, central governments, and local citizens need to learn and relearn that no government can develop the full array of knowledge, institutions and social capital needed to govern development efficiently and sustainably. ...” How about that? Party on — safely Halloween parties for adults can be fun, safe, by following the rules Halloween has become more than just an evening for children’s entertainment, It’s also an excuse for adults to party as well. With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, the number of adult parties is likely to skyrocket. Children are given a lot of advice to make Halloween safer for them. They are urged to wear costumes that can be seen by others the dark, to wear costumes that don’t affect their movement, to have parents check out the candy before the kids eat it, to avoid homes where no lights are on, to not go out alone, and to wear masks that don’t obstruct vision. That’s advice repeated year after year. Grownups need to be cautious, too, if they are headed out to an adults-only party where alcohol will be served. It is possible to have fun without drinking to excess.

AAA of Tennessee says nearly one in three adults are planning to attend or host a Halloween party this year. Plan in advance by designating a sober driver before getting to the party. According to the National Retail Federation, Halloween parties for adults have been growing in popularity. This year, two out of three persons ages 18-24 will attend or host a party. Many of those parties will be in neighborhoods where children will be out trick-or-treating. While it would be nice if all kids chose a Halloween alternative such as an event at a church or community center, many still like to go door to door. That can clash with adults on their way to or from a party. AAA statistics show nearly six in 10 traffic fatalities in the U.S. on Halloween night last year involved a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08 or high-

er, which is illegal in every state. To help keep the roadways safe this Halloween weekend, AAA offers a few easy tips: n Designate a sober driver in advance or ensure cab service is available from the party location. n Consider an overnight stay. If attending a party at a friend’s home, consider asking to stay overnight. If participating in festivities in a downtown or commercial area, look into hotel accommodations within walking distance. · n Do not let impaired guests drive. Offer alcohol-free beverages. n Avoid traveling through residential areas where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present. n Watch for children in the street. n Obey the speed limit. Follow these suggestions and Halloween can be safe for young and old alike.

Public forum Tax money shouldn’t be used to build road for developer

Editor: I read recently that the developer who has performed a “mountaintop removal” on the south side of Interstate 40 just east of Highway 66, for the purpose of siting a new shopping mall, has asked the City of Sevierville for financial help to build a road onto his barren manmade plateau after leaving the site in unreclaimed condition for more than a year now. As a Sevier County resident I am strongly opposed to using any public money to bail out this developer. To me, this seems like an extreme example of welfare for the rich, which is all the more obscene right now when there is scarcely any money available to help the really needy.

I can see no public benefit whatsoever to completing this project even if eventually some tenants are interested. Jobs could be created just as well, and the tax base expanded with much less expense, by redeveloping empty commercial space that has all of the needed structures and infrastructure already in place; I have seen quite a bit of seemingly quite viable empty commercial space around Sevier County. Unfortunately, market conditions seem to be dictating few new retail outlet openings right now regardless of location. I urge readers to contact their local officials to express opposition to any use of our tax money to cover the losses of an individual who made a risky venture and has left us a mess — money that could be used to improve our schools and similar purposes that do benefit the community. Editor: I have been a subscriber to The Mountain Press for about four years and never have I been so upset with a front page as I was with the edition of Oct. 27. We are known as a family oriented area, but the picture of the young boy with the “Whoopie Cushion” costume on is most certainly in the worst taste I have ever seen. I feel like The Mountain Press owes the readers of the paper an apology. As adults we must lead by example. If I had children that would likely see this picture I would be outraged. By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer SEVIERVILLE —The Sevier County High School Smoky Bears football team knows where it’s at, and it knows what’s at stake this Friday night against visiting IMAC Conference rival Morristown East Hurricanes. But in the face of history in the making with a chance for the first perfect 10-0 regular season in school history, the Smoky Bears (9-0 overall, 6-0 in District 2-AAA) are not losing sight of a couple of important things. First, they still have to defeat a dangerous East (5-4 overall, 4-2 in District 2-AAA) squad coached by SCHS graduate Dwayne Hatcher this Friday night in Sevierville. Secondly, the Bears don’t intend on just settling for a 10-win season only to finish one-and-done in the postseason, which is just around the corner. “We’re looking at this game (against East), and we’ve got to have a playoff intensity,” said 18th-year SCHS coach Steve Brewer. “We need to play with that playoff intensity and just get

used to it. “A bad quarter can mean it’s your last game, once we get into the playoffs. So, we’ve got to be sharp Friday night, and we’ve got to play with a lot of passion.” For the Bears, the chance to make school history by going 10-0 is more of a motivation than a potential distraction. “But I know these guys are aware of the fact that we’re going for an undefeated season,” said Brewer. “That to me, in itself, is pressure enough. But so far this year, this team has handled things pretty well. “I just want us to come out and play our best football and play with a lot of passion. If we show up to play that way, it’s going to be a great ball game.” The Smoky Bears team knows what it will take to achieve the perfect season. They’ve been reminding themselves of it at the end of practices and games all year. “If you want to go somewhere you’ve never gone,” the team says in its dismissal huddles. “You’ve got to do something you’ve never done.” chitchcock@themountainpress.com

Just a little bit of improvement for either team might make the difference when the Volunteers (3-4, 1-3 SEC) host the Gamecocks (6-2, 3-2) on Saturday night. The two teams rank among the worst in the country in covering kick-

off returns by allowing approximately 28 yards try. They’ve also both given up two touchdowns on kickoffs. The Vols also added field goal protection to their list of specialteam problems after two blocked field goals cost them a chance to upset Alabama. Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says he’s making changes in his field goal protection unit, while South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is tweaking kickoff coverage.

Fisher will announce starting QB on Thursday By TERESA M. WALKER AP Sports Writer NASHVILLE — Jeff Fisher knows he can’t keep the identity of his starting quarterback secret until kickoff Sunday even if he wants to. So the Tennessee coach is trying to keep it quiet for another 24 hours. Fisher said Wednesday he will announce his starter Thursday, trying to carve out another day of competitive advantage for the winless Titans against Jacksonville (3-3). The coach stuck with Kerry Collins as his starter all season. But the Titans are 0-6, and owner Bud Adams reportedly wants to see Vince Young start Sunday.

NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE OF REAL ESTATE WHEREAS, on the 7th day of August, 2002, Mr. Quentin A. King, and wife, Ms. Lynda S. King, by their Deed of Trust, recorded in Trust Deed Book 1501, at page 660, in the Register s Office for Sevier County, Tennessee, at Sevierville, conveyed the below described Real Property to Allyn M. Lay, Jr., as Trustee, in behalf of the First National Bank of Oneida, to secure the payment of a promissory note drawn in the amount of One hundred seventy thousand, seven hundred, seventythree dollars, and fifty-nine cents, ($170,773.59), which promissory note was signed by Mr. Quentin A. King, and wife, Ms. Lynda S. King, and wife, Ms. Lynda S. King, and was made payable to the First National Bank of Oneida, and which note was and remains secured by the foregoing mentioned Deed of Trust; WHEREAS, on the 26th day of June, 2003, Mulch King, LLC., by its Deed of Trust recorded in Trust Deed Book 1733, at page 689, in the Register s Office for Sevier County, Tennessee, at Sevierville, conveyed the below described Real Property to Allyn M. Lay, Jr., as Trustee, in behalf of the First National Bank of Oneida, to secure the payment of a promissory note drawn in the amount of One hundred eighty-seven thousand, three hundred, sixty-six thousand, one cent, ($187,366.01), which promissory note was signed by Quentin A. King, as Chief Manager of Mulch King, LLC., and Quentin A. King and wife, Lynda S. King, individually, and was made payable to the First National Bank of Oneida, dated June 26, 2003, the said note, and all renewals thereof, including all other indebtedness of Mulch King, LLC., and Mr. & Mrs. King to the First National Bank of Oneida, being referred to in the said Deed of Trust; WHEREAS, the promissory note referred to in the immediately preceding paragraph was in fact renewed by a subsequent series of promissory notes dated and drawn in the following respective amounts: June 26, 2004, drawn in the amount of $180,232.72; June 17, 2005, drawn in the amount of $173,083.40; June 19, 2006, drawn in the amount of $168,925.43; December 31, 2008, drawn in the amount of $159,715.43; all of which promissory notes were signed by Quentin A. King and Lynda King as members of Mulch King, LLC., and individually, and which promissory notes were and remain secured by the foregoing mentioned Deeds of Trust; WHEREAS, Mulch King, LLC., by and through Quentin A. King and Lynda King as members, and individually, borrowed additional funds represented by a promissory note dated December 31, 2008, drawn in the amount of $7,261.30, which promissory note was made payable to the First National Bank of Oneida, and which promissory note is and remains secured by the foregoing mentioned Deeds of Trust; WHEREAS, all of the above mentioned promissory notes signed by Mulch King, LLC., and/or Quentin A. King and wife, Lynda S. King, representing all of the indebtedness of Mulch King, LLC., and Quentin and Lynda King, were and remain secured by both of the foregoing mentioned Deeds of Trust, dated August 7, 2002, and July 1, 2003; WHEREAS, default has been made in the payment of the above referred to indebtedness by Mulch King, LLC., Quentin A. King and wife, Lynda S. King, represented by the promissory notes dated December 31, 2008, drawn in the amount of $159,715.43, and the promissory note dated December 31, 2008, drawn in the amount of $7,261.30, the entire amount of said indebtedness having been declared immediately due and payable pursuant to the terms of the promissory notes referred to above, and in the foregoing mentioned deeds of trust, the beneficiary of the foregoing mentioned deeds of trust, i.e, the First National Bank of Oneida, has directed the undersigned as trustee, to foreclose upon the subject real property in accordance with the terms thereof. Dear Annie: An acquaintance recently lost his job, and we invited him and his wife to move into our home on a temporary basis. We all agreed they would live with us until one of them found another professional position. It’s been only three months, but it’s already uncomfortable. “Sue and Bob” do small household chores and pay a minimal amount in rent, but that doesn’t counteract the interruption they have added to our daily lives. They have taken over the fridge, the cabinets, the laundry room, the living space and the kitchen. We have no private time anymore and cannot trust them to lock doors or turn off the dryer or coffee maker when they leave the house. They parade around the house semi-nude, make a lot of noise when we’re sleeping and talk while we are reading or watching TV. We have discussed these issues and others as they have come up, but it hasn’t helped. We’ve asked them to keep out of our bedrooms and home office, but the other day I found both of them coming out of the office. We do not want to put locks all over. We want to trust them, but it seems unlikely. They have made comments about our bills, which indicates they have looked at our private mail. They are supposedly applying for jobs, but so far haven’t found anything that pays what they feel they deserve. We worry we’ll be stuck with them forever. They have severance pay, unemployment and money from family members. They spend it on manicures,

personal trainers and new electronics. Here’s the kicker: They are actively seeking a divorce. How do we tell them they have overstayed their welcome? -- Bad Roomies Dear Roomies: You need to set a deadline and stick to it. Tell Sue and Bob that you hadn’t anticipated the job search would take so long and you can no longer accommodate them. Give them one month to find other arrangements. Bring home boxes so they can pack (and help them along). At the end of the deadline, if they make no attempt to leave, tell them you will put their belongings on the front steps. Then change your locks. Dear Annie: My husband and son have chronic lung problems. Our son has asthma, and my husband’s lung health has gotten worse over the years. We have never been smokers, but we have tolerated our relatives who are. Lately, however, family gatherings are proving difficult. Exposure to cigarette smoke can cause my husband to have a setback and my son’s asthma to flare up. I have mentioned that their smoking causes problems, but they don’t seem to pay attention. I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. If I were a smoker, I would feel terrible if I thought I caused someone else to have health problems, but they

don’t seem to feel the same. Yet they would be upset if we didn’t attend these functions. Any suggestions? -- Smoked Out Dear Smoked Out: Your husband and son should not be subjected to cigarette smoke, period. Tell the relatives you love them and would enjoy spending time with them, but your family’s health comes first. Ask if they would please smoke outside. Otherwise, sorry, but you won’t be able to come. Dear Annie: Hurray for “Put Some Clothes On,” the man who objected to the trend of women wearing “tight clothing, push-up bras and plunging necklines.” I teach at a community college and am routinely barraged by students with practically half their breasts “looking” back at me. It distracts me from the subject matter, and I’m a happily married female! I can’t imagine what it must be like for my male colleagues, let alone other students trying to get an education. I’m no prude. Some of these styles might be nice in another setting.
