KNOXVILLE — After months of claiming his innocence, disgraced Gatlinburg investor Dennis Bolze pleaded guilty to six felony counts — three for money laundering and three for wire fraud — as he admitted in court Tuesday he ran a Ponzi scheme out of his home. A plea agreement was presented to U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Varlan during the change-of-plea hearing in which Bolze, 60, conceded he defrauded his clients out of more than $21.5 million. In the deal the government’s prosecutors made only one concession: They will not object if Varlan sentences Bolze to less than the maximum penalty. No promise was made
that his sentence would be lessened as a result of his guilty plea. Varlan set a sentencing hearing for April 15, meaning Bolze — who was captured in Jersey Shores, Pa., in March after fleeing Gatlinburg in mid-December — will have already served more than a year in the Blount County Jail before he’s sentenced. Varlan also asked that a presentencing report be completed by a probation officer to determine how severe Bolze’s sentence should be. Each wire fraud charge could carry a term of 20 years in federal prison with a $250,000 fine, while each count of money laundering may net Bolze 10 years behind bars and a $250,000 fine. With up to 90 years of jail possible, there’s a chance Bolze may never again live as a free man.
Victim: He ruined so many lives —and ruined his own By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer
Under the deal, Bolze has acknowledged the government will seize all property he obtained as part of the earnings from his scheme, including 12 real estate purchases throughout Sevier County, and three cars. At least one of those vehicles, a 2005 Cadillac Escalade, has already been repossessed
KNOXVILLE — B.J. Byars nodded silently in a Knoxville courtroom Tuesday morning as she listened to Dennis Bolze plead guilty to six felony counts for a Ponzi scheme that bilked her and husband Ron out of $188,000. “I feel like this is a step in the right direction,” Byars said after the hearing. “I just think it’s a very sad situation. He’s ruined so many people’s lives. Not only that, he’s ruined his own.” Byars, who lives in Gatlinburg, is the only one of Bolze’s investors who has attended any of the court proceedings in the criminal case against him. Sevierville attorney Ross Gray was in the courtroom Tuesday on behalf of several other clients who lost money in the fraud. Byars said she and her husband are praying Bolze

SEVIERVILLE — The Public Building Authority took new steps this week to develop an overall plan for the work at Eagles Landing Golf Course, and reviewed a cost estimate that included up to $2.5 million on the project. That included $322,000 for the William Charles Group, a consulting firm the PBA hired earlier this year to analyze and oversee the project. The group will be involved in developing a business plan for the entire project, and has taken over the architecture as well as project management. It helped to develop the $2.5 million figure. That figure includes some spending the PBA has already approved, but represents the remaining costs associated with the golf course. “That was ... an identification and quantification of everything remaining,” City Administrator Steve Hendrix said. As he explained, the PBA had been operating by approving spending for different measures, but without the benefit of an updated budget. Most of those initial decisions were made before he came to the city as assistant administrator, but Hendrix offered an explanation of how the project had gone so long without that sort of oversight. He reminded the PBA that it began approving different parts of the project to get a head start while it waited on approval for environmental permits. See golf, Page A5

Lost hikers found safe near Abrams Falls From Submitted Reports NATIONAL PARK — Rangers in Great Smoky Mountains National Park located three lost hikers in the Abrams Falls area at about 7 p.m. Monday. All three were in good condition. Three individuals were identified as Jonathan Hildreth, 21, Kayla Latard, 19, and Samual Willis, 19, all of Knoxville. Park dispatch got a cell phone call at about 3:30 p.m. Monday from three people who reported that they had set down their packs and jackets along the Abrams Falls
trail about a mile west of the trailhead, then left the marked trail. They had become lost in the thick brush and steep, confusing terrain, park officials said. Blount County dispatchers were able to use the group’s cell phone to provide rangers a location in an area called “The Shoe, so-called because Abrams Creek makes a long loop. The Shoe is confusing, so searches in that area are not uncommon, park spokesman Bob Miller said. Rangers located the trio at about 7 p.m. and guided them out. “This group was extremely lucky
to be found so quickly because the vast majority of the park has little to no cell coverage, so we would not have known they were missing until being contacted by outside parties, Acting Chief Ranger Steve Kloster said. “They were also fortunate that the call came in as early in the day as it did, or it would have been too dark to get rangers in to the area safely and effectively. They would have spent a dark, damp night in the woods. “The best advice we can give to hikers is to stay on the trails to avoid getting turned around.
County library has endless ideas for gifts From Submitted Reports
Ideas for Christmas gifts or memorials can be found at the Sevier County Public Library. Sponsors have a price range and endless gift possibilities from which to choose. Library board chairwoman and foundation member Janet King said, “Last year I gave gifts of the tile wall; this year I plan to give new books for the new library — all in honor of people I love. The goal is to add 2,010 items to the new library’s collection in 2010. Persons can sponsor a book for $25 in honor or in memory of someone. The new item will contain a special nameplate, identifying the donor and honoree’s names. Persons may select the type of item and content area, choosing from various literary genres. The Tile Wall allows persons to select a hand-painted, three-dimenssional ceramic tile that will be permanently installed in the foyer

of the new library. This mural wall will reflect the county’s history. Along the base of the wall will be individual book spines — rows of colorful books. Prices range from $100 to $7,500. Those who enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains could buy waterfalls or rhododendron art, among mountain scenes still available. Other possibilities: Boyds Creek Settlement, revivals and baptisms, cantilever barns, Murphy College,
pickup trucks, Sevier County Fair, rod runs, sayings, high school sports and birds. Many of the tiles allow buyers to help in the design. Both programs are sponsored by the library foundation for the Sevier County Public Library System, and checks should be made out to the foundation. million to make payments to existing clients, claiming those checks were dividends made off his investments. All the while, Bolze was providing earnings reports to his investors that claimed somewhere around 10 percent returns, even in down years. The fraud seems to fit exactly the definition of a Ponzi scheme, in which the orchestrator uses money from new recruits to pay returns to existing clients. However, as the stock market turned sour along with the economy late last year, the flow of new investors stopped. Folks who had already paid in began demanding their money. Bolze stopped answering calls from clients, and his checks to them started bouncing in late 2008. He eventually fled Gatlinburg in mid-December.
The rest of the cash Bolze didn’t invest or send out as payments — just under $10 million — he used to finance his own lavish lifestyle. Given that much of the money was spent on things that can’t be reclaimed, and a pair of banks hold liens on the Campbell Lead Road home totaling more than $6 million, it’s unclear how much restitution those Bolze defrauded will ever see. Beyond that, Bolze is being represented in court by public defender Kim Tollison after claiming that he is destitute. Both Tollison and Hamilton declined to comment on Tuesday’s proceedings. Bolze was quickly led away by a U.S. marshal. n dhodges@themountainpress.com

and sold by the bank that gave Bolze the loan to buy it. Further, a similar action has already been taken on property Bolze owned in the Norton Creek development in Gatlinburg. The real property includes six lots that were set to be part of the subdivision Highgate on Campbell Lead Road that Bolze purchased to build his palatial home. Control of that land is currently being disputed in an involuntary bankruptcy proceeding against him. Prior to the hearing’s start, Bolze was led into the courtroom in a gray-striped prison jumpsuit, his hands and feet in shackles attached to a chain around his waist, his body shrunken

sees the light in prison and seeks to make amends both to those he scammed and to a higher power. “I hope he turns his life around, Byars said. “Ron has said that from the start, too. Ron has always said he just wishes Dennis would take responsibility for what he’s done. He wants him to make things right with the Lord because he’s really concerned about his eternity. He’s even thought about trying to encourage Dennis that way once he’s in prison, but I think it’s in his best interests not to. Ron Byars became friends with his neighbor Bolze a few years ago and began going to breakfast with him regularly at the Pancake Pantry in Gatlinburg. During those sessions, Bolze nurtured a rapport with Byars and eventually convinced him to invest money in Bolze’s Centurion Asset Management. In the coming months Byars would give Bolze $188,000 of the couple’s retirement savings. In turn, Bolze provided him with earnings statements that claimed his money had grown to more than $240,000. Still, B.J. Byars thought it all seemed too good to be true. “I didn’t feel right about it from the beginning. I didn’t feel right about him, she said Tuesday. “He was more Ron’s friend than mine. To me he was more just a neighbor. But I didn’t trust him. Unfortunately, it would only be a short time before Byars’ concerns were validated. Bolze left town, and federal investigators told the Byarses their money was likely gone. “When we first heard about it, I wanted to think he had just gotten into trouble and lost the money in the stock market, Byars said. “It turns out he didn’t even do any investing with it. He just deliberately set out to hurt people. And the Byarses were hurt, perhaps as badly as anyone else. Like others who have contacted The Mountain Press with their stories since Bolze was arrested,
Getting that approval proved to be a longer and more difficult process than anticipated. Several times, engineers returned to the PBA to report that some agencies had changed their standards while the board was trying to win approval, forcing changes in applications or even in the plans for the course. “We were working on areas that we would not impact environmentally, and we were doing that in house as we were acquiring our environmental permits, he said. “Then, due to the length and complications of acquiring the environmental projects, we worked in house longer than we anticipated. The estimate presented Monday, he said, was the result of work by himself, staff and the consulting firm to give the PBA a comprehensive look at the work remaining to be done. The costs include $819,324 in additional materials, $960,000 in labor and a $400,000 contingency fund. The board didn’t approve spending the entire amount, but did approve additional spending from that budget so that work could continue on the golf course. Several of the projects were at or near the amounts previously budgeted by the board, and officials said they would need more money to continue. In a status report prepared for the board on the general status of the projects under PBA oversight, Hendrix explained that it was issues with the oversight that led the board to dismiss the previous architect and eventually to hire the William Charles Group. “The (previous) archi-

the Byarses lost such a huge portion of their retirement money that Ron Byars tried to go back on his decision to retire from his job overseeing The Village in downtown Gatlinburg. “They told him he couldn’t because they had already lined up his replacement, B.J. Byars said. “He has been applying for jobs but there’s not much out there open. I’ve told him he doesn’t have to do that, that we can get by on what we have, but he’s not sure. While Byars believes Bolze deserves to be punished, she’s saddened by the thought the 60-year-old may never again be a free man. She’s not sure if that’s because she believes in forgiveness or the fact she can remember the Dennis Bolze who was her neighbor and her husband’s friend; the man who hosted fundraisers at his home for the Gatlinburg Garden Club at Byars’ request. “I just hate to see anyone have to give up their life like that. That’s a terrible thing, Byars said. “There were a lot of people who were hurt, though. The law says he has to be punished. n dhodges@themountainpress.com

tect brought general renderings to the table and largely directed design and construction in the field, he explained. “This approach prevented any cost oversight and made it impossible to relate the remaining work to the remaining money. “The issues associated with project management and not design is what ultimately led to the mutually agreed termination of our contract. Also, he said, having much of the work divided out piecemeal made it even more difficult for staff to “wrap their arms around all the costs. They also tried to cut some expenses as they worked through that process, he said. The William Charles Group’s services include a project manager who stays on site as well, which has helped with controlling costs as well as answering questions from contractors more quickly. The consulting firm’s duties include taking over the design, on site management of construction, developing an overall plan for the course, even developing job descriptions for personnel. When the PBA hired the firm earlier this year, it noted its track record of turning public golf courses such as Eagles Landing into revenue producers. Owner Gary Lewis Sr., who was present for Monday’s meeting, said he believes that’s possible in this case as well. “With this location, this market, the synergy you can create around it ... It shouldn’t be that difficult, Lewis said.

FedEx projects busier busiest day MEMPHIS (AP) — FedEx is predicting a little more holiday cheer this year. The company forecasts it will ship 13 million packages on Dec. 14, which it expects to be its busiest day this year. That would be up more than 8 percent from the total of about 12 million packages shipped on its peak day last year. That was the busiest day ever for FedEx, due in part to a growing partnership with the U.S. Postal Service. Last year’s vol-
umes were also boosted because of rival DHL exiting the U.S. market. It shipped about 11.5 million packages through its Ground and Express units in 2007. FedEx Corp. bases its predictions on discussions with large customers and improving economic data. FedEx ships about 7.5 million packages on an average day. Both FedEx and larger rival United Parcel Service Inc. hire thousands of workers to
account for the increased holiday haul each year. This year, FedEx’s Ground unit will add 14,000 additional part time and temporary workers during November and December. At FedEx Express, part-time and full-time employees work overtime as needed during the holiday season. UPS spokesman Norman Black said the company, based in Atlanta, expects to hire about 50,000 seasonal workers in the U.S. this year. It hired 60,000 sea-
sonal workers in 2007. It didn’t release statistics in 2008. All FedEx’s shipment numbers include a partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, where FedEx picks up or accepts shipments and delivers the packages to a post office for final delivery by a postal carrier. Dec. 17 is the last day to guarantee delivery through FedEx Ground. Dec. 23 is the last day to ship via the company’s Express service.

NEW YORK (AP) — Aerosmith’s lead guitarist Joe Perry says the legendary rock band isn’t breaking up — although they may be in need a new singer. Perry Perry said on the micro-blogging site Twitter late Monday that Aerosmith is “not splitting up” but “looking for a new singer to work with” amid growing speculation about the future of the band and the role of front man Steven Tyler. Tyler has been quoted as saying he is considering a solo career.

Voters want change in all elections Right there on the front page of the Oct. 23 Washington Post, “senior administration officials” attributed the predicted defeat on Election Day — then still a week and a half off — of Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds to Deeds’ failure to seek and heed advice from the Obama White House. This can only be called a “pre-mortem,” obviously intended to counter any negative perception that President Obama’s own popularity might be slipping in a state he carried just a year ago by pinning the blame for the defeat on the local guy. But we already know, because the president’s press secretary Robert Gibbs told us, that in 2009 Virginia and New Jersey “voters went to the polls to talk about and work through very local issues that didn’t involve the president.” Just as we learned from the campaign committee spokesman in 2001 — after the candidates of the then-president’s party lost governor’s races in those same two states — that “these (off-year) elections revolved around local issues and local candidates. There were no discernible national trends.” All of these rationalizations and excuses are baloney, bunk and bushwa. Offyear elections do matter, especially psychologically. Victories help fundraising, help candidate recruitment and lift party morale. Defeat can leave in its wake anxiety, even panic in party ranks. As Bill McInturff, the trusted Republican pollster, told reporters at a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, “You cannot imagine the carnage of losing 54 House seats (the number Republicans lost between the 2006-08 elections).” If it’s true that the three most important things about real estate are location, location, location, then the three most important things about Election Day are turnout, turnout, turnout. In the 2008 election — with much of the credit going to the Barack Obama candidacy — a voter turnout increase of 5 million over 2004 included 2 million more black voters, 2 million more Hispanic voters and approximately 600,000 more Asian voters. The only age group that produced a statistically significant increase was young voters. But when it came to voter turnout in 2009, Obama’s political coattails turned out to be a cutoff tank top. In 2008, Obama’s strongest age group in Virginia, young voters (between 18 and 29), were 21 percent of the electorate and his weakest age group, voters over the age of 65, represented just 11 percent of the electorate. This year in Virginia, young voters shrunk to 10 percent of the total, while over-65 voters increased their share to 18 percent. In fact, given the demographic makeup of the 2009 Virginia voters, even if Barack Obama had run as strongly as he did in 2008 among Democrats, Republicans and independents when he won that state, instead of carrying Virginia by 7 percent as he did, he would have lost Virginia to John McCain by 4 percent. But for the meaning of it all, nobody explains the political reality better than respected Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who finds the 2009 election returns quite similar to those of 2008: “Then as now the ‘In’s’ lost and the ‘Out’s’ won, and the message remains the same: We want change, and we are unhappy with what’s going on.” What do the American people feel toward Washington? In Hart’s candid judgment, “disappointment and disgust.” Instead of the new, fresh approach promised in 2008, voters still “see the same, old Washington” full of pettiness, partisanship and bile. To compound the anger of citizens who, according to Hart, “are equally hostile to Wall Street,” the only groups they see being helped by the government’s economic policies — at the expense of people who have lost their jobs or average working families — are large banks and Wall Street investment companies. Those, sadly, are the final returns of 2009. — Mark Shields is a veteran political campaign manager and frequent television talk show commentator. Column distributed by Creators Syndicate. Deserved recognition One day a year to honor veterans doesn’t seem like nearly enough If every day is Mother’s Day, then surely every day also is Veterans Day. Setting aside one day a year to remember and honor the men and women who wore the uniform seems so insignificant, so inadequate. It is what it is. Today you have at least two opportunities to show your personal regard and admiration for the veterans by attending either the Sevierville or Gatlinburg ceremonies, both scheduled for 11 a.m. The Sevierville event is at the courthouse; the Gatlinburg event is on the plaza of Ripley’s Aquarium. Whether we served in the armed forces or not, our lives have forever been affected by the ones who did. But how did we come to set aside a day each November to honor them? On Memorial Day we honor those who died in service to their country. Veterans Day recognizes anyone who wore the uniform and defended free-
dom and America. Here is a history of the day as reported by military.com: Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on Nov. 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, Nov. 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.’” As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean war, Congress, at the urging of the veterans organizations, amended the 1938 law by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the last Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971. Finally on Sept. 20, 1975, President Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on Nov. 11. Please take time today to thank veterans you see and know, and remember what they did for this great and blessed nation.

Obama honors Fort Hood victims, condemns murders By BEN FELLER Associated Press Writer FORT HOOD, Texas — One by one, President Barack Obama spoke the names and told the stories Tuesday of the 13 people slain in the Fort Hood shooting rampage, honoring their memories as he denounced the “twisted logic” that led to their deaths. “No faith justifies these murderous and craven acts; no just and loving God looks upon them with favor,” Obama told the crowd on a steamy Texas
afternoon. “And for what he has done, we know that the killer will be met with justice — in this world and the next.” He did not name Maj. Nidal Hasan, the military psychiatrist accused of the killings. As for the victims and the soldiers who rushed to help them, Obama said, “We need not look to the past for greatness, because it is before our very eyes.” He spoke at a memorial service before a crowd estimated at 15,000 on this enormous Army post. The president and first

lady Michelle Obama began an afternoon of consolation by meeting privately with family members of those killed last week and with those wounded in the attack and their families. Obama used his public remarks to put a human face on those who perished, victims ranging in age from 19 to 62. He also used his platform to speak indirectly to questions about whether the alleged shooter had ties to extremist Islamic ideology. Thousands upon thousands of people, many of them soldiers dressed in
camouflage, gathered to pay their respects and hear the president. The shooting killed 12 soldiers and 1 civilian, injured 29 others and left a nation stunned and searching for answers. Below the stage where Obama spoke was a somber tribute to the fallen — 13 pairs of combat boots, each with an inverted rifle topped with a helmet. A picture of each person rested below the boots. After the ceremony, Obama walked solemnly along the row of boots, placing a commander in chief’s coin next to each victim’s photo in tribute.
Then soldiers and loved ones traced the same path to remember those lost and give a final salute, one woman nearly collapsing with grief. Even as Obama honored the dead, there was government finger-pointing over what had been known about Hasan and whether he should have been investigated further. U.S. officials said a Pentagon worker on a terrorism task force had looked into Hasan’s background months ago and had concluded he did not merit further investiga-
tion. Two officials said the group had been notified of communications between Hasan and a radical Islamic imam overseas and the information had been turned over to a Defense Criminal Investigative Service employee assigned to the task force. The two spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation. The revelation provided fresh evidence the military had been keeping an eye on the Army psychiatrist before the shooting rampage.

Highlanders seek revenge in Friday game with A-E By COBEY HITCHCOCK Sports Writer
GATLINBURG — The Gatlinburg-Pittman Highlanders hope to get some revenge this Friday night at District 3-AA rival Austin-East Roadrunners for Round 2 of the TSSAA state playoffs, and the Blue and Gold will use whatever it takes to come away with the first-ever G-P victory over A-E ... even if it takes a kitchen sink. “I hope we’re ready to throw everything we’ve got at them,” said Hammonds, just after a team filmstudy session at the field house Tuesday afternoon before moving to the nearby community center for some practice under shelter from the persistent rain. “We’ve still never beat Austin-East, and we’re looking forward to one more opportunity to try and get it done.” The Highlanders (10-1 overall, 5-1 in District 3-AA) came close to earning that first-ever win against the Roadrunners (8-3 overall, 6-0 in District 3-AA) nearly four weeks ago at an extremely muddy Hammonds Field. G-P grabbed its first and

around? “We need to stop all kickoff returns,” laughed Hammonds. “But seriously, we’ve got to be solid with our defense, it’s what
we’ve relied on all year. Our defense has got to be mighty stingy against some mighty good offensive backs, receivers and a quarterback. “And our offense hopefully can take some opportunities to move the football and block better and put some points on the board. We’ve been a little disappointed with our blocking this year, but Monday was our best practice day we’ve had all year, and I was tickled to death with the boys. “We just need to carry that over and play all three phases of the game well this Friday night in order to have a chance win. “But we’re looking forward to it. (A-E) has got a good team, there’s no doubt about that. We’ve got to deal with their speed, they’re well coached, they play good defense, they play good offense and they’re solid in their kicking game. “There’s a reason why they’ve had a good year, and there’s a reason why they’re so highly respected. It’s going to be a tough ball game for us, but I think our boys are looking forward to the opportunity and they’re
excited about going down there..” It’s been a long time since the Highlanders traveled to A-E for a game. In fact, none of the current G-P players were even born when the Blue and Gold last played on the road against the Roadrunners. “It’s been 22 years ago,” said Hammonds. “We haven’t played a game at A-E since 1987.” This time around, the field won’t be an issue like when the teams met nearly four weeks ago. “(A-E’s) field is in good shape,” said Hammonds. “So we’re looking forward to it.” After G-P defeated former Watauga Conference rival Happy Valley --- the only team to defeat the Highlanders last regular season --- by a final of 17-7 last week for Round 1 of the state playoffs, the Blue and Gold are hoping a trend develops. “We had the opportunity to play the only team that beat us last year,” said Hammonds. “And this week we have the opportunity to play the only team that beat us this year.” chitchcock@themountainpress.com

Wife amazed by San Francisco VA Medical Center staff

Dear Annie: Shortly after Thanksgiving last year, my husband was hospitalized at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. We live 250 miles from the hospital and spent the week with friends nearby. We visited my husband daily, and did the same a few months later when he needed a second surgery. While there, I observed that the vast majority of patients had absolutely no visitors. I asked the nurse if this was a fluke because of the holidays, and she sadly told me my husband was among the rare ones who had people come by. As we left, I made a point of saying something encouraging to each patient I saw. While I waited for my husband’s second trip to the hospital, I spent time thinking of small things I could do to make their time there less lonely. The staff at the VA is wonderful. Not only do they provide great care, but they do it with a smile. Everyone we passed said hello, including members of the supervisory, housekeeping and maintenance staffs. When we left the last time, I placed a large box of candy at the nurses’ station with a thank-you note for the wonderful care. Aside from adding my encouragement to your Valentines for Vets program, I would like your readers not to forget our veterans on other days, especially Veterans Day, Memorial Day and the 4th of July. -- Vet’s Wife in Northern California Dear Vet’s Wife: Thank you for giving us this opportunity to remind our readers on
Veterans Day to visit their local VA hospital and brighten the day for the residents there. You don’t have to have any special skills. Bring flowers, baked goods if permitted, books or photos of your kids to break the ice, and simply ask a few questions: Where did you grow up? Do you have any hobbies? What is your favorite movie, book, etc.? How are you feeling? And take the time to listen to the responses. It can make a world of difference. Dear Annie: I have been seeing “Gary” for three years. He is a wonderful person but gets upset easily. Lately, he has become verbally abusive. It’s quite painful because I know inside he is a good person. I am insecure now and don’t know what to expect. I do not want to be without him because he makes me happy most of the time. When he is in a great mood, he treats me like a queen and constantly says “I love you.” Should I take the bad with the good? -Extremely Sad Dear Sad: Not the abusive “bad.” If Gary recognizes that his verbal arrows are hurtful, inappropriate and possibly out of his control, he may be willing to get help before his behavior escalates. Tell him to see his doctor for a complete checkup and get anger management counseling, or you are

out of there. And mean it. Dear Annie: I can relate to the letter from “Help Needed in Florida,” whose grown children blame her for everything. I have three grown children. Like “Help,” I am also liked and respected by friends and co-workers, but unless I kiss the behind of my eldest daughter, she acts cold and distant. She and her husband are punitive if I don’t do everything they want or if I say anything negative about their children’s conduct. I thought I was a caring, loving mom. I remember years ago, Ann Landers asked her readers if they had it to do over again, would they have children. I really don’t know how I would answer. My former mother-in-law used to say, “When they are little, they step on your toes, and when they are grown, they step on your heart.” -- Sad Sandie Dear Sandie: We remember that survey -the vast majority of readers said “no,” but those who are unhappy are most likely to write. Not every child is a source of comfort to his parents. We hope you have a loving relationship with the others.
