PIGEON FORGE — Former Pigeon Forge Mayor George Worsham, a man credited with helping to shape the city through his leadership during the 1970s, died Tuesday at the age of 90, leaving behind what City Manager Earlene Teaster calls “a Worsham huge hole.” Worsham served as a city commissioner from 1971 to 1979, including a stint from 1974 to 1975 as mayor. Teaster, who served with Worsham as a clerk for the city three decades ago, offered praise for him and sadness at his passing. “George was a very fine person and it’s a real loss to the city of Pigeon Forge and a sad time for those of us who knew him,” Teaster said. “He just absolutely loved Pigeon Forge, and a lot of really good things happened for the city, things that really shaped Pigeon Forge into what it is today, during his time in office.” Worsham began his service to the city 10 years after it was incorporated. During his tenure, Teaster said, Pigeon Forge implemented its gross receipts tax that has become a crucial source of income for the city, expanded the wastewater treatment facility, built a new welcome center, got a new post office and purchased the land for Patriot Park, among other things. “We did a lot of things under his leadership that

December entered with a roar this week as a cold front moving through the area brought wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour and brought trees down all across Sevier County. Emergency officials and crews with Sevier County Electric System were kept busy Wednesday responding to calls about trees down in roads and on power lines. At the peak, a few thousand folks were without power and traffic lights were off on a portion of the Parkway in Pigeon Forge, electric system Secretary/ Treasurer Allen Robins said. “Right now we have 91 outages affecting 1,833 of our 54,000 customers, but the number has been higher than that today,” Robins said early Wednesday afternoon. “The hardest-hit areas

Bite of Sevier offers tasty Toys for Tots fare By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — Just in case any residents had already made a full recovery from Thanksgiving, the local Marine Corps League detachment offered its annual Ruby Fox Bite of Sevier County on Tuesday evening, drawing a huge crowd to try dishes from 10 area eateries. The popular event serves as the last fundraiser of the year for the Sevier County Toys for Tots, which this year will likely brighten Christmas for 7,000 East Tennessee children. With the program seeing record demand, Tuesday’s gathering and the money it raised are more important than ever. “It’s critical that we do well here tonight,” Toys for Tots coordinator John Linnert said. “There are a lot of children in Sevier County who would have to go without this Christmas without the generosity of Amanda Williams/AC Photography people like the ones who are here tonight. We will make sure that every kid who needs it in this county Attendees of the annual Bite of Sevier County load their plates with offerings from 10 local has a toy under the tree.” eateries during the Tuesday evening event, a See TOTS, Page A5 fundraiser for Toys for Tots.

Man charged in connection with vehicle deaths in park From Submitted Reports ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A Cincinnati man has been charged in connection with the deaths of two people in an Aug. 19 vehicle accident in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Clyde L. Grubbs, 74, of Cincinnati faces two criminal counts in connection with a motor vehicle accident that occurred in Swain County, N.C., and claimed the lives of two South Carolina motorcyclists. Grubbs was charged on

Nov. 3 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. He is charged with death by vehicle, a Class I misdemeanor, and driving left of center. If convicted, he faces up to six months in jail for the first and more serious charge.

Grubbs is scheduled to make his initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Asheville on Dec. 14. According to the charges contained in the federal bill of information, two persons were fatally injured when their motorcycle was hit by

a vehicle driven by Grubbs. According to official documents, Grubbs was traveling southbound on Newfound Gap Road (U.S. 411) driving an Oldsmobile Bravado mid-sized SUV when he allegedly crossed the centerline and sideswiped a

2008 Mercury Milan sedan, then continued on to hit a Harley-Davidson motorcycle head-on. The driver of the Mercury, a 41-year-old man from Waynesville, N.C., was treated and released from Swain County Hospital.

Sevierville man held after burglary charges Submitted Report A Sevier County man has been arrested in connection with a home burglary on Old Newport Highway. Officers responded to a 911 call from a resident on Old Newport Highway who confronted a suspect who allegedly had just

burglarized his home. Officers arrived and arrested Bobby Joe Parton, 46, of 3104 Old Newport Parton Highway, Sevierville. Detectives found that

Parton forced open a side door and entered the residence, Sheriff Ron Seals said. The home owner, who was working outside, discovered the burglary and located the subject as he was exiting the front door. The home owner detained the suspect and called 911 until officers

arrived, Seals said. Parton was charged with aggravated burglary, theft of items worth over $500 and vandalism over $500. He is being held at the Sevier County Jail without bond. A hearing has been set in Sevier County General Sessions Court.

Reports of nuisance bear sightings up locally By BOB MAYES Managing Editor SEVIERVILLE — Sevierville police spokesman Bob Stahlke says the number of calls about nuisance bears is higher than usual this year, but an officer responding to an unusual one Wednesday found nothing. Animal control officer Dave Clinton responded to a call that came in around 12:30 p.m. from the Denton Road area saying a very young cub was in a tree, Stahlke said. However, by the time Clinton and a representative from the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency arrived, the cub had left and there was no sign of his mother. Several sightings of a mother bear and a cub had been reported in the area, including one on Tuesday night in which the caller said she thought the mother might have been shot. “The caller ... said she heard gunshots in the area where she saw the mother and her cub, Stahlke said. “We have no evidence the

mother was shot, although it is unusual to see a cub without its mother. Stahlke said it appears that this mother and cub are not the same family as the mother and three cubs that have been spotted several times in the vicinity of the Pigeon ForgeGatlinburg Airport. “We think there is more

than one group, but we aren’t positive, he said. He reminded anyone who spots a bear in a residential area to follow the standard advice offered by law authorities. “Our advice is to leave them alone, Stahlke said. “Keep your distance. Do not feed them under any circumstances because

this just keeps them in the area. Remember, they are wild animals and are dangerous. Anyone who spots a bear should call the Sevierville Police Department at 4535506. n bmayes@themountainpress.com

Worsham was also a driving force behind the creation of the city’s first volunteer fire department and a charter member of the Pigeon Forge Lions Club. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of First Baptist Church up until his death. Beyond just his civic leadership, Worsham was also known locally for being a successful entrepreneur. He dedicated half his life to running the Vacation

Lodge Motel, which he owned for 45 years. “George was a very smart, very fine businessman, Teaster said. Still, it’s Worsham’s leadership both behind the commission desk and in front of it that Teaster believes will be missed most. “He was just an outstanding citizen. He served Pigeon Forge well, she said. “He’s really going to be missed here. Worsham’s family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Friday at Atchley Funeral Home, with services following at 3 p.m. in the funeral home’s West Chapel. n dhodges@themountainpress.com

direct bewildered motorists. Carol Schmidt, a manager at the hotel, said it was a canvas covering from a balcony on the building’s top floor that caused all the problems. “Our maintenance man was going around checking on it and he’s the one who spotted it, Schmidt said. “It was fixed pretty quickly. While the electricity was restored quickly, Schmidt said the wrath of the front moving through wasn’t so easily dodged. “We’re getting 60-mileper-hour winds, she said. “It’s been like a mini-tornado. It’s opening our automatic doors and blowing papers around inside. Robins admitted officials at the electric system were somewhat shocked at how bad things got Wednesday. “We weren’t really anticipating such high winds today, Robins said. “Sitting here in Sevierville the wind’s not blowing at all, but in Wears Valley our guys actually had to get back in the truck when they went to fix one issue. There were trees falling all around them. National Weather Service Meteorolgist David Hotz said gusts as high as 80 miles per hour were recorded on Cove Mountain throughout the day, with an effect known as “mountain waves likely to blame for the incredible force of the wind in Wears Valley and throughout the East Tennessee foothills. “We’re getting a lot of reports of trees down and of damaging winds up and down East Tennessee, Hotz said. “In this area we get something called mountain waves that you could think of kind of like those big waves they get crashing

down on beaches in Hawaii or somewhere. As the wind hits the mountains it kind of backs up and crashes down onto the foothills. That’s likely why Robins saw only light breezes in Sevierville while Schmidt reported nearly-tornadic conditions in Pigeon Forge, Hotz said. The gusts also had a huge impact in the national park. With more than 500,000 acres of virtually nothing but trees, park spokesman Bob Miller said workers there were busy all day. “Our maintenance folks have been responding to one call after another, Miller said. “Several roads have been closed for varying amounts of time for fallen trees and pretty much every road has suffered some. Fortunately, at least by mid-afternoon, Miller said there had been no reports of damage or injuries related to the wind. Likewise, local dispatchers’ calls seemed mainly confined to trees on power lines and not emergency situations. All the commotion was apparently caused by a cold front and low-pressure system moving through the area throughout the day. Hotz said he issued a high wind warning for Sevier County Wednesday morning that lasted through 4 p.m., but expected by early afternoon he’d be extending it into the evening. Forecasters expect the system to have mostly moved out of the area today and the winds to have died down. However, there are likely to be some rain showers in the area behind the front and another system moving through the area Saturday may bring a bit of the white stuff, Hotz said. “It will be cool and cloudy for the rest of the week and we may even see some flurries or light snow by the weekend, he said.

and that he refused a final meal. Johnson, his relatives and those of the victims had declined requests for interviews about the slayings. The execution came after federal courts, including the Supreme Court, denied a series of lastminute legal efforts to halt the execution. Gov. Phil Bredesen denied clemency for Johnson last week. Johnson was a 23-yearold kitchen worker at Vanderbilt Hospital when the July 5, 1980, slayings occurred. His father turned him in two days after the shooting, and he was identified at trial by Bob Bell Sr. Jim Sledge, a retired homicide detective for the Metro Nashville Police Department, said the most troubling aspect of the case was “the fact that a 12-year-old boy was killed, and Bob Sr. watched his only child executed in front of him.” Sledge said two men

were shot in a taxi. Charles House, 35, and driver James Moore, 41, “were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said. In 1987, Johnson was one of two death row inmates convicted in the 1985 beating death of fellow prisoner Laron Williams at the old Tennessee Penitentiary. Williams was on death row for the slayings of a Memphis policeman and a Roman Catholic priest. Johnson became the sixth person put to death in Tennessee since 2000. There were no executions between 1961 and 1999. The last person executed in Tennessee was Steve Henley in February. A bar now occupies the former site of Bob Bell’s Market. On the establishment’s front window, printed in gold, is a Johnny Cash lyric to inform patrons that guns are banned inside: “Don’t take your guns to town, son. Leave your guns at home.”

NASHVILLE — A man who spent 28 years on death row for killing three people while robbing a Nashville convenience store was executed early Wednesday after telling relatives who witnessed his death to “trust in the Lord.” Cecil C. Johnson Jr., 53, was pronounced dead at 1:34 a.m. at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Those killed in the July 1980 shootings were the market owner’s 12-yearold son, Bobby Bell Jr., and two men sitting in a cab outside, Charles House, 35, and driver James Moore, 41. Johnson’s wife, two brothers and adult daughter watched from behind a window as Johnson lay strapped to a gurney with medical tubes taped to his skin. He mouthed “I love you,” then told them in

his final statement to be strong and “trust in the Lord.” The prison warden directed the lethal injection to begin at 1:21 a.m. Johnson’s daughter, Deangala, 30, turned away and covered hear ears as her father took two deep breaths, fell asleep and began to snore. She tried to leave the witness room, but was told by prison guards that she couldn’t until the warden announced the time of death. The victims’ families witnessed Johnson’s death from another room, said state Department of Corrections spokeswoman Dorinda Carter. Among them was the market’s owner, Bob Bell Sr., who was wounded in the shootings. Carter said Johnson spent his final hours in a cell next to the execution chamber with a phone and television. She said he met with family, attorneys and his spiritual adviser

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A Fort Drum soldier was arrested at a hotel in southern Ohio early Wednesday on a warrant charging him in the stabbing deaths of two fellow servicemen at an apartment near the military post in northern New York. The bodies of Waide James, 20, and Diego Valbuena, 23, each with multiple stab wounds, were found Tuesday morning in an apartment complex housing mostly military families in Evans Mills near the post’s main entrance. Fort Drum is the 10th Mountain Division’s home base. A warrant was issued charging Joshua Hunter, 20, with two counts of second-degree murder.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — An Army psychiatrist was charged Wednesday with 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the deadly mass shooting at Fort Hood that also injured more than two dozen soldiers and two civilian police officers, military officials said. Maj. Nidal Hasan has already been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder after the Nov. 5 shooting in a building at the Texas base where soldiers must go before being deployed. Witnesses said he jumped on a desk and shouted “Allahu Akbar!” — Arabic for “God is great!” Army officials have said he was armed with two pistols, one a semiautomatic capable of firing up to 20

rounds without reloading. The additional charges come less than 24 hours after Hasan’s civilian attorney was notified that the Army plans to evaluate Hasan to test his competency to stand trial as well as his mental state at the time of the shooting. John Galligan, Hasan’s attorney, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Army officials had not returned his calls so he did not know when or where the “mental responsibility” exam would take place. Galligan said he had filed an objection to the evaluation pointing out that Hasan was still in intensive care at a San Antonio military hospital recovering from gunshot wounds that left him paralyzed.

variety of food, Hagmeier added. “We put on a great spread,” she said. “No one will go home hungry!” Tickets are a $5 donation to the Sevier County Humane Society and Animal Shelter and are available at the animal shelter and at the door of the event. Hagmeier is hopeful for a good turnout, especially since the number of homeless animals has increased this year due to the poor

economy. “It’s a cooperative effort,” she said. “The people who come out make it fun — you can’t sit down without someone telling you they have the best dog or the best cat.” The preview of the auction will begin at 1 p.m. and the auction will start at 2 p.m. For more information, call the Sevier County Humane Society at 453-7000.

“I’m incensed at the way the military is handling this, serving additional charges on my client when he’s in the hospital and defense attorneys are not present,” Galligan

told The AP by phone from his office near Fort Hood, about 150 miles southwest of Fort Worth. “And nobody will tell me what the plans are for the evaluation.”

About 150 tickets were sold for the event, raising thousands of dollars. On top of that, live and silent auctions brought in even more with offerings such as a Fender guitar, a Gatlinburg vacation and a golf package. “Of course, the real attraction for everybody is the food,” event organizer and Marine Corps League Detachment 1206 Commandant Sam Hassen said. “They get to taste the best dishes from these very good restaurants. People love that.” Both Hassen and Linnert said this year’s Bite of Sevier County was better than the last, with a bigger turnout and great culinary offerings. “We’ve got more people and the food is just spectacular,” Linnert said. “We’ve had a really good evening.” That’s a good thing for local families in need because all the proceeds from the event go to the Toys for Tots effort, which provides new presents for children who might otherwise not get anything this Christmas. Organizers expect to see a record number of folks participate this year, a suspicion they had bolstered Tuesday after the largest sign-up date they’ve had so far this year. Two more opportunities

remain for those who want to get help from the group, with additional registration times today from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The toys will be distributed Dec. 12. All those activities will be directed from the former location of the KB Toys store in the Belz Outlet

Mall on Teaster Lane in Pigeon Forge. The group is also still looking for support to ensure they can fulfill Linnert’s promise of providing a toy for every local child in need this holiday season. New toys can be dropped off at locations throughout the county.

Animal abuse could become felony NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee Rep. Janis Sontany is considering legislation that would make abuse of any confined animal a felony. The Nashville Democrat recently visited the Tennessee State Fairgrounds and viewed 82 nearly starved horses and two mules that had been moved there last week after being found in squalid conditions on a Cannon County farm. Sontany told The Tennessean that farm animals were not includ-

ed when a measure that addressed dog and cat abuse passed the Legislature because of objections from farming community representatives. However, she said such treatment of horses — or any confined animal — should be a felony as it is when a dog or cat is abused. “We no longer should give anyone a pass if they hold back food and water,” Sontany said. Cannon County Sheriff Billy Nichols said the two

About 35 of the healthiest horses will be moved to an equine rescue group as early as next week, said Scotlund Haisley, senior director of emergency services for the Humane Society of the United States. “This started as a rescue operation, and now it’s a lifesaving operation,” he said. “It’s miraculous that we’ve had as many survivors as we’ve had this far.”

Staff drove it over the mountains to Cherokee for a truck show and it won the Chief’s Choice award.

commentary

Insuring mortgages a mistake The Federal Housing Administration announced this week that it wants tougher rules on mortgage lenders. It’s about time. Maybe FHA got spooked by the recent New York Times story titled “Easy Loans to Wealthier Areas,” which said: “In its efforts to prop up a shattered housing market, the government is greatly extending its traditional support of real estate, including guaranteeing the mortgages of middle-class and even upper-class buyers against default” (http://tinyurl.com/y8lbeod). The Times explained that San Francisco, one of the priciest real estate markets in the country, had no government-insured mortgages two years ago, but now “the government is guaranteeing an average of six mortgages a week here. ... The Federal Housing Administration is underwriting loans at quadruple the rate of three years ago even as its reserves to cover defaults are dwindling.” And some of those loans are surely questionable. The Times explains that 27-year-old Mike Rowland and his friends were able to buy a two-unit apartment building for almost a million dollars. “They had only a little cash to bring to the table but, with the federal government insuring the transaction, a large down payment was not necessary.” “It was kind of crazy we could get this big a loan,” Rowland said. Yes, it was crazy. Such policies do not end well. Young Rowland gets that. Even the Times does: “With government finances already under great strain, the policy expansions are creating new risks for American taxpayers.” But our leaders plunge ahead, with your money. Has the administration forgotten that today’s financial mess was precipitated in part by government’s moves to encourage mortgage lending to unqualified or at best unproven borrowers? In the 1990s, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, concerned that blacks and Hispanics were “underserved,” issued guidelines to banks stating: “Policies regarding applicants with no credit history or problem credit history should be reviewed. Lack of credit history should not be seen as a negative factor ...” (http://tinyurl. com/d3aa28). Soon, the lower standards spilled into the prime-mortgage market. The risk to lenders seemed small because government-sponsored Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac happily bought the dubious loans. An entire financial edifice was built on these securitized mortgages and derivatives based on them. Then the good times ended. Interest rates rose. Home prices flattened and then declined. Then those AAA mortgage-backed securities became “toxic.” After all that, it’s crazy that government still subsidizes housing rather than letting the market work. The economy will recover from recession only when it is allowed to discover the real value of assets like houses. But the government refuses to allow this to happen. FHA has been blowing air into another bubble, while other agencies do everything they can to boost prices. This includes leaning on and bribing banks to ease mortgage terms for people in default. The Obama administration announced that it would increase that pressure because “the banks are not doing a good enough job,” said Michael S. Barr, assistant treasury secretary for financial institutions, (http://tinyurl.com/yl7nabj). Some Democrats want to go further. They demand that the government compel mediation over defaulted mortgages or empower judges to change the terms. The know-it-alls in Washington “help” Americans by hurting them. Why won’t the government let housing prices seek their own level? After a Washington-inflated bubble, that would seem to be the wise thing to do. Sure, some people get hurt when prices fall, but others — prospective home-buyers — are helped. By artificially raising prices, the RealtorConstruction-Banking-Big Government Complex cheats honest low-income people who would otherwise have been able to afford a first home without begging the government for help. Home ownership, all else equal, is a good thing. But when government lumbers into the market and subsidizes folly, that’s a very bad thing. — John Stossel hosts a show on the Fox Business Channel and is the author of “Myth, Lies, and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel — Why Everything You Know is Wrong.” (C)2009 JFS Productions Inc.

Slow going Rock slide making things congested for over-the-mountain route Those motorists looking to find a way around the Interstate 40 rock slide are finding Newfound Gap Road to their liking. Maybe it’s road maps or GPS or simply a hunch, but they think taking U.S. 411 over the mountain is a quicker route than the one recommended, which involves using I-81 and I-26. The problem is that the detour drivers are making things congested for the folks who just like to drive Newfound Gap Road for the scenery and possible snow. It could be a difficult winter for that two-lane road. Park officials are doing all they can to handle the extra traffic, but short of stationing rangers at each end to advise and screen motorists, there isn’t a lot they can do. The concern, of course, is what will happen when U.S. 411 is shut down due to snow, while the interstates remain open. That sometimes happens in the winter when snow can fall at higher altitudes and not in the valley. Imagine the frustration of a family

on its way to spend Christmas with relatives and getting to the edge of the park only to discover 441 is closed because of snow. We’re a family newspaper so we can’t print some of the language that will rock the inside of those cars. Making thousands of drivers educate themselves on the best detours and the risks of certain routes is impossible. At some point drivers have to take responsibility for their own plans and learn the inherent problems with each one. Anyone who tried to make their way through the park on Thanksgiving weekend found traffic at a crawl and backed up from Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge. Travel up and over the mountain on 441 is slow enough as it is without throwing in thousands more vehicles into the mix. If you are expecting company this Christmas season, now is the time to talk to those friends and relatives and explain the detour issues. If you are heading out, take time to learn

the routes. Just because I-81 and I-26 seem like longer ways to reach your destination doesn’t make them slower. And don’t forget about 25/70 through Newport, which can save time as well. Yet even that route carries delays as drivers try to make their way through downtown Newport and through its aggravating traffic signal system. Until the rock slide is cleared and traffic can move again along Interstate 40, we’re just going to have to make the best of this situation. Hey, it wasn’t that long ago that two-lane highways were the norm for most of America. President Eisenhower had the idea of an interstate system of travel, unimpeded by traffic lights or intersections. We owe him thanks for that. When one shuts down, we all feel it. Patience, dear drivers, patience. It’s a wonderful gift that has escaped the mindset of too many Americans. Better rediscover it if you plan to travel this holiday season.

Public forum Annual Gists Creek fundraiser earns thank you for supporters

Editor: What a wonderfully amazing area we live in. The youth from Gists Creek Baptist Church held their annual bake sale fundraiser in Wears Valley recently and what a remarkable turnout we had. They successfully raised over $1,600 to benefit the needy children at Winfield Elementary School in north Tennessee. We began our day around 6 a.m. and finished approximately 12 hours later, and the kids faithfully worked all day to support their mission cause. I am so proud of these compassionate and loving children; they clearly show God’s love through their efforts. I need to thank my mother, Ruth Dodd, and aunt, Betty Ball, who baked three days straight to provide us with over 42 cakes and other items to sell. Also my church family who baked many items as well. I again owe a gratitude of thanks to the two markets that allowed us to use their property to set up our sales: Exxon and BP stations. I want to send a tremendous thank you to the locals who search us out each year to help out. Your generosity is always overwhelming and so very graciously accepted.

But first and foremost, I thank God above for touching hearts and always meeting the needs at hand. I am nothing, but with my Lord who strengthens me, I can conquer all obstacles. With the economy this past year, we were truly challenged to meet our goals, but God saw fit that we surpassed. He always does. Whether you baked, donated, spread the word or prayed, I thank you, each and everyone. We could not have done it without your love. Ila Douglass Youth Director Gists Creek Baptist Church

Holistic perspective needed in considering health care bill

Editor: An open letter to Congressman Phil Roe: I am writing in response to your guest column that was published in The Mountain Press and also circulated via e-mail. I understand your concern about protecting the rights of unborn babies. But in these days when Congress is considering major reforms to comprehensive health care for all of our citizens, surely you and other U.S. representatives, with responsibilities to improve

the conditions of all of us, need to be addressing broader questions than just preventing tax money from funding abortions. What about the lives of children who are born? We should ask: “Born, but how shall they live?” It is shocking to realize that the United States is only 40th in the rankings based on infant mortality rates — i.e. that a greater percentage of babies and young children under the age of 5 die here than in 39 other countries. How many of the born babies live in families who currently do not have affordable health insurance? Surely anyone who considers themselves to be “pro-life” should not only be against abortions, but should more holistically promote the health and quality of life for children and their families. In other words, you (and all of us) need to do whatever can be done to assure that children not only live to celebrate their fifth birthday, but live healthy and productive lives beyond that. We urge you to support comprehensive health care reform that includes the promotion of and support for preventative health measures (healthy lifestyles). Surely a more holistic perspective is needed as you and others consider the historic legislation in front of you. Jim Rugh Sevierville

G-P’s Schofield signs with Tennessee Wesleyan By JASON DAVIS Sports Editor

Jason Davis/The Mountain Press

Gatlinburg-Pittman senior Lindsey Schofield signs with Tennessee Wesleyan College on Wednesday. Accompanying Scholfield are her club soccer coaches Frank Cravens (far left) and Tom Leonard (far right, who’s also her father), her new coach Naomi Clarke and her mother Laura Leonard.

GATLINBURG — One year after transferring from Sevier County High School to Gatlinburg-Pittman, senior Lindsey Schofield will be donning yet another soccer uniform, this time for the Tennessee Wesleyan Lady Bulldogs. The 2009 G-P Offensive MVP signed with coach Naomi Clarke’s Lady Bulldog squad Wednesday afternoon. “She’s been interested in the program for while,” coach Clarke said at G-P. The coach, a former international player for her native New Zealand, said in Schofield’s visits to Wesleyan, she quickly made an impression. “I like the way she plays, I like her attitude on the field, work ethic, pace. She’s got skill, she can finish. (She’s got) good vision, she plays the field well, and I really need attacking play-

ers.” For Schofield, the decision to sign with the Lady Bulldogs was easy. “I talked to coach Clarke and I just liked her so much,” Schofield said. “She was so friendly and so accommodating to me, and the girls I roomed with (on visits) I really clicked with, and I like the school, everything about it.” Schofield’s club team coach, who happens to be her dad, Tom Leonard, said he thinks she’ll succeed at the next level. “She’s really strong in her play of the ball, and she really understands the game well — all the positions, not just her position,” Leonard said. “I think she’ll play outside mid for them, and I think she’ll do really well. They’ve got some good outside mids, but I think she can step in and contribute. I think she’ll do pretty good.” mpsports@themountainpress.com

Scott Sexton racing back to dirt track prominence From 1988 to 2002 Pigeon Forge’s Scott Sexton ran roughshod over many of the tracks and competitors of east Tennessee. In that time frame he scored over 200 late model feature wins on the region’s dirt. Unfortunately, for personal reasons surrounding the illness and subsequent death of his father, Sexton’s racing career came to a sudden stop. Sexton and Son Racing was forced to close its doors after providing the cars to propel their driver to the vast majority of his victories. Since 2002, Sexton has only driven sporadically. In that time he has served as a driver coach for other rising stars while having to sit back and hope for another opportunity to prove he could still get the job done himself. “I feel like I could still have five or even ten good years left in me,” the 43year-old Sexton declared. That chance has come in recent months. Sexton has taken on the role of advising young Seymour, Tenn., driver Ryan King. Along with that, a second car was provided by Ryan’s dad and team

Advice

Group member shows no empathy toward friend with breast cancer

Zits

Blondie

Baby Blues

Beetle Bailey

Dear Annie: I get together once or twice a year with a group of girlfriends I’ve known since high school. We are at our wits’ end with one I will call Miss Motor Mouth. We are in our 60s, with families. Miss Motor Mouth has never been married or even been in a relationship. She is very self-centered and talks incessantly about her former job (she’s been retired for three years) and the people she worked with, whom we’ve never met. She loves to flaunt the obscene amounts she spends on purses, clothing and wine, and how many millions her brother is worth. It is impossible to discuss anything with the others without her interrupting. One of the girls has terminal breast cancer. Miss Motor Mouth has absolutely no empathy for this friend because she chose to treat her cancer holistically. We are at the point where, after 43 years, we are thinking of not inviting her to the next gathering because we can no longer tolerate her incessant blather. Would it be better to tell her how annoying she is? She seems oblivious to our feelings. What else can we do? -- Singed Ears Dear Singed: If you are prepared to cut her out of these gatherings, you may as well tell her why. Don’t gang up on her. One of you should meet her for coffee and explain that she seems to be monopolizing the conversations, and that you are upset by her apparent lack of respect for the woman with breast cancer. Say that you are sure

she isn’t intentionally alienating her friends, and ask if she could try to be more sensitive. If she cannot or will not, you don’t have to keep inviting her. Dear Annie: I want to ask my parents and in-laws to give smaller Christmas gifts to our two boys (ages 2 and 5 months) and instead make a contribution to their college funds. My husband does not feel this is appropriate. While we do not need the contribution, it would certainly be appreciated. We are already overloaded with toys and know that both sets of grandparents will go overboard on gifts by several hundred dollars. I know my in-laws will be insulted if we donate any of their toys to charity, so I can’t comfortably go that route. Is it a bad idea to ask them to buy fewer gifts? Can I ask them to limit their spending? Can I ask my parents to donate to the college fund, even though they have already contributed? Or do I just suck it up like usual? -Louisville Lass Dear Louisville: By all means, ask the grandparents to limit the gifts. If they ask what the children want, it’s fine to suggest they contribute to their college funds. But in the end, you cannot control how they choose to indulge the grandchildren. We still think donating them is a good idea, and you also can

put some gifts away and allow the kids to unwrap them individually at later dates. Dear Annie: I was pleased by your response to “Ditched in Montreal,” whose friend kept canceling plans at the last minute. You suggested she might suffer from an anxiety disorder. Unless you’ve experienced a panic attack, it’s difficult to understand how debilitating it is. I would describe it as an uncontrollable surge of adrenaline that makes you feel as though you’ll die if you don’t get somewhere safe. As someone who has had this condition for eight years, I can attest to how hard it can be to attend public gatherings. The only place that felt safe was my home. It took medication and regular contact with my doctor to get my anxiety under control. It also helped immensely to have understanding friends and family. Montreal’s friend likely accepts invitations because she would like to go, but becomes more and more anxious as the event grows closer. I hope Montreal makes the effort to help. -- Better Now Dear Better: We do, too. Thanks for the backup.
