Readers’ Choice – Page 3

The voters have spoken; here are the winners The voters have spoken. The choices have been made. The winners have been separated from the losers. That seems a little harsh, but of course Readers’ Choice is really just an election. We print the ballot, you make the selections, we count up the results and we announce the winners. And we do this election the oldfashioned way: Paper ballots and pen or pencil markings. Ah, the good old days. Readers’ Choice is a sampling of the people’s tastes, in this case readers of The Mountain Press. Who hasn’t

fielded questions from visitors or newcomers looking for a recommendation for a restaurant or insurance agent or hair stylist or real estate agent. Who hasn’t been asked by somebody to tell them who’s got the best burger or barbecue or fried chicken. Or, “Who’s your dentist?” Or, “Can you tell me the best place to get my car repaired?” Ask 10 people, you’ll get eight or nine different answers. People are loyal to their favorite Mexican restaurant or hamburger joint, their favorite supermarket or bank or pizza joint. We aren’t asking

people to decide among political candidates or who’s gonna win the World Series. These decisions of our readers were, in some cases, made among dozens of choices. Think about how many apartment complexes we have, how many pharmacies, law-

yers and motels. Each has a fan base. Each has a following. But elections are decided by those who take part. Readers’ Choice winners are decided by those who fill out the ballots properly and send them in. And we’re talking

about hundreds and hundreds of ballots. Only qualified ballots are counted. What’s a qualified ballot? Each ballot — we ran it in The Mountain Press several times over the summer — had to be filled in according to the rules. That meant no photocopies. Each voter had to make choices in at least 25 categories. The ballot had to be signed, with an address and phone number included. Those ballots that met our deadline and our rules were counted, with the results put into a computer. That’s tedious work, since ballots are filled out by hand. We’re

talking about more than 100 categories. The results you hold in your hand today are the end product of a lot of work and reader input. This year’s winners will receive a plaque designed by Sign Master, a step or two up from the framed certificates of the past. Remember, we aren’t choosing the best of anything by a scientific or objective method. We are revealing the choices our readers made in a variety of categories. Enjoy what they had to say. Debate the merits of the choices. But respect the decisions of the voters.

Maples happy with success in hometown By ELLEN BROWN Staff Writer The secret to Marvin Maples’ success as a car salesman at Volunteer Chevrolet is simple: Always have a goal. “I’m already planning when I get up in the morning,” said Maples, who won Readers’ Choice for Car Salesman for the fifth straight year and the 13th time in 15 years.

He’s been with Volunteer Chevrolet since April 1996, but he’s been a car salesman for 35 years. “Larry Hill, who was my mentor, was the one who put me in business. I worked in the parts department at Al Smith Chevrolet in ’74 and ’75. Larry came in one day and said, ‘I want to put you in sales.’ I didn’t want to at first — I was a backwards country boy,” he said with a laugh. See maples, Page 6

By ELLEN BROWN Staff Writer For John Hood, winner of the Readers’ Choice balloting for favorite chiropractor, having a career as a chiropractor is a dream come true. “I’ve never had a day that I didn’t want to come into the office, said Hood, who has lived in Sevier County for nearly 11 years. “I enjoy learning new technique and getting people better quicker. A native of Clinton, Iowa, he is a graduate of the University of Iowa See hood, Page 7

But Maples proved to be a natural salesman, attracting plenty of repeat customers and referrals. “I’m just a people person, he said. The Sevier County native has been married to wife Carlene, also from Sevierville, for 30 years. Their son Derek, 23, is a University of Tennessee graduate and is currently enrolled at Dallas Theological Seminary. By ELLEN BROWN Staff Writer Winning Readers’ Choice for favorite dentist is something Dr. John Rader doesn’t take for granted. “Each time we’ve won, we’ve been elated,” Rader said of himself and his staff. “I’m humbled and honored. It always makes you feel good that the patients recognize you’re doing your best.” The Sevier County native, who practices in Sevierville, feels that dentistry is his calling. “I enjoy working with See rader, Page 8

It was actually during a southbound visit that he fell under the spell of the Smoky Mountains. “I got below Kentucky and thought, ‘Wow, this is beautiful.’” An avid runner, he had also read an article in Runner’s World magazine that praised the terrain of the area. who never went to the doctor. It’s got to work on me before (I try it with) my patients. Then they can say, ‘If Dr. Hood can run 26 miles after his injury, maybe I should try to walk at least one mile.’” Hood works with many of the area’s high school athletes, including football players and cross country runners. He also works with the chart-topping rock band Nickelback on tour — he and the band’s bass player are good friends. Along with “always training for the next race and planning for the next concert,” Hood has remained active in the community and feels right at home in Sevier County. “This area resembles my hometown — the population is pretty much the same.”

The popular dentist said one important factor to his success is his excellent staff. “I feel blessed to have such a good staff — they’re very compassionate and talk to the patients like family. Favorite waitress feeling at home in the business By JEFF FARRELL Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — Not too long ago, Whitney Huffaker Hughes wasn’t even anticipating a career in the restaurant business. Now, she’s won the Readers’ Choice award for favorite waitress. “I had just bought ‘Twilight’ (the first DVD in the series) on a whim because I was bored. I had never been into vampires, but I just love Edward — he’s so romantic.” She specializes in natural manicures and pedicures — “I don’t do artificial nails,” she says — and would like to see more of her clients asking for pedicures. “People think pedicures are about summer, but it’s really about foot maintenance. Paramedic Randall Williams was the Readers’ Choice winner for paramedic. raderie, something he said he’d missed after leaving the Marine Corps. Still, he said he wasn’t sure he would have been able to make the change if his wife, Allysyn, hadn’t given him the encouragement to go ahead. The two of them have an 8-year-old son, Kendall, but she gave him the encouragement to try the new job and see if it made him happy. He wouldn’t be able to do it if he didn’t also like to help people. Paramedics see people at some of the worst moments of their lives, he said, and he likes having the chance to help people through that.

That could be one of the reasons he won the Readers Choice Award. He said he doesn’t know what made readers select him. He tries to go out of his way to be nice to patients when they’re on a call. “I figure they’re having the wort day they an have. He would drive the ambulance sometimes when the medical personnel needed to be in the back working on a patient, and drove the rescue trucks other times. “The more I did it, the more I got interested,” he said. He was also becoming more and more interested in the job itself. Working at the hardware store was fine, he said, but he felt like he’d gone as far with it as he could and it seemed as though he were getting into a rut. Eventually, he learned about an opening within the fire department and decided to complete the training and sign on fulltime. He hasn’t regretted the decision; he’s the type of person who enjoys having a different challenge every day. “It’s like coming to a new job every day,” he said. He also enjoys the cama-

Cotterell wins again as massage therapist By BOB MAYES Managing Editor SEVIERVILLE — Randy Cotterell may be the co-owner of Raindrops Salon, but his professional career is full of sunshine these days. The 42-year-old who was born in Illinois and came to Sevier County via Florida, was recently chosen as Readers’ Choice favorite massage therapist for the third straight year — although he shared the honor with two others two years ago. “I’m just speechless this time, Cotterell said at his studio recently. “The first year I was just surprised and last year I was floored.. “This year ... I don’t know what to say expect thank you to all of the people who voted

Massage therapist 1) Randy Cotterell, Raindrops (tie) 2) Robin McGregor, A New Beginning 3) Cathy Edmundson, Cathy’s Beauty Boutique for me. Hopefully, this show I am doing something right. Strangely enough, Cottrell never intended to get into massage therapy. He had been living in St. Petersburg, Fla., and was vacationing in the area when he heard Dollywood was hiring in its finance department in 1991. With his background as an assistant movie theater manager, landed a job.

During his decade-plus at Dollywood, Cotterell would occasionally give casual massages to friends — feet, back and arms — and they encouraged him to make it his profession. After graduating from the Tennessee School of Theraputic Massage in Knoxville, he went into the business fulltime in 2006. He is also a member of the American Massage Therapy Association, where he is active in the Tennessee chapter. Raindrops, located in the Elco Plaza on Dolly Parton Parkway, has several variations of massage, with other staff members offering wax treatments, cuts, colors and perms. therapy, all of which he facilitates. Basic massage rates begin at $35 for 30 minutes or $65 per hour depending on the treatment. “Massage really helps a person’s well-being, Cotterell said after winning the award for the second time. “It helps hundreds of things. It lowers stress, helps regulate blood pressure, just gives you a total body cleansing to name a few. Although he has won this award three years running, he isn’t letting it go to his head. “(Winning) is good because it helps keep your name out there, Cotterell said. “ ... I may not be the best, but I promise you I’ll get in there and do my best.

his life or what career to pursue. He thought about something in the medical field or biology, but that didn’t work out. Ten years later, he is happy with the decision he ultimately made. Shanton is a member of the Sevierville Fire Department and this year’s Readers’ Choice winner as favorite firefighter in Sevier County. “I was surprised, the 28-year-old said of the award. “Thanks to everyone who voted for me. I can’t thank you enough. This is a wonderful community. Shanton was a member of the 1999 state champion Sevier County High football team, playing both fullback and outside linebacker. The

thrill of winning that title his senior year has never eased. Although Maryville College doesn’t give football scholarships, he was recruited to attend the school and play ball. Shanton didn’t earn his degree. Instead he tried other jobs and volunteered at the fire station. That led to a full-time position about four years ago. “Being a firefighter was not a lifelong dream, he

He is outgoing, gregarious and personable. “I wanted a hands-on kind of job, he said. “My friends would not be sur-

prised to see me doing this. Shanton (he’s actually Samuel Keener Shanton III) is an EMT/IV tech who usually works out of the city’s new fire station on Collier Drive. Shanton said the job is fun and challenging. “There is some anxiety, but I like that part of it.

King still favorite official

bohanan 3From Page 15

By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer SEVIERVILLE — Johnny King still can’t figure out how the man whose office decides what everyone will pay to the county continually wins the award for being Sevier County’s favorite elected official. This makes the sixth con See king, Page 17

parking lot behind his shop to meet the demands of his legion of customers, who regularly overflowed the crowded space at the corner of Prince Street and North Parkway in Sevierville. Bohanan started Rick’s Service Center on Jan. 1, 1993. The move came after turns of owning his own shop and working in the repair department at the old Al Smith Chevrolet. While he may have made a few changes in where he worked, Bohanan can point out at least one thing that has remained consistent. “I’ve worked in a two-mile radius of here since 1972,” he told The Mountain Press.

At the shop, Bohanan and his fellow mechanics regularly work on as many as 80 vehicles in a week, providing virtually every service imaginable from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. As another show of his popularity, customers are perfectly willing to put their names on a list to wait for services from oil changes to axle repairs, when it means getting Bohanan’s seal of approval on the job. The modest mechanic attributes his success to one other thing that has remained consistent throughout his career. “I try to be honest and I try to do good work,” Bohanan said. “I take pride in my work.” He’s been taking that same pride all his life, starting out in the vehicle repair business as a boy.

Growing up on a farm here in the county, he often helped his dad work on tractors and heavy equipment, saying it was that practice that got him into the industry. With the addition of the former A+ Office Supplies building to the operation, a large part of the operation for Rick’s Service Center, including the administrative offices, has moved back into the new facility. While he has a space back in that building, don’t expect to see Bohanan spend a lot of time there. “I run the shop mostly, but I still try to diagnose a lot of the stuff, and I still work on them, too,” Bohanan said. “We stay busy here.” n dhodges@themountainpress.com

secutive year King has found himself at the top of the ballot when the readers of The Mountain Press voted in the category, a feat that still leaves King stunned. “I’m just honored,” King said. “I’m humbled.” In his job as the county’s property assessor — coincidentally, he just started his sixth term with that title, too — King and his staff determine what the owner of every recorded property in the county has to pay in taxes. It’s a task that one might reasonably expect would make King not a very popular guy. However, he says he has a simple formula that has always served him well in dealing with the public. “I try to be fair to people, no matter if they live in a fancy mansion or in a little house. I hope they appreciate that about me and that’s why they choose me,” King said. “I’ve tried to do that ever since I was elected assessor.”

Johnny King proud of his sixth straight win as favorite local official.

That trait has been put to the test this year as the office goes through the reappraisal process, a requirement every six years that means some people find out they’re going to be paying more to the county starting in January. King has worried the updates could mean some folks hold their new rates against him, though that doesn’t seem to be the case. King believes that might in part be because of the Readers’ Choice awards that adorn his walls alongside certificates and plaques from various groups he supports or is part of. He thinks they might help give folks who have

never previously dealt with him some confidence that he has their best interests in mind. While they might win him some friends in public, at home King admits the Readers’ Choice awards don’t go far. While he’s fairly certain wife Karen, the finance director for the school system, voted for him in the balloting, he said winning doesn’t get him out of trouble if he should forget an important date like her birthday or their anniversary. In more than two decades in the courthouse job, King said he is thankful for the opportunity to have met Sevier Countians from Seymour to Gatlinburg and everywhere in between. “The good Lord has just blessed me with an awful lot of friends from one end of the county to the other,” he said.

Linginfelter wins teacher citation By BOB MAYES Managing Editor SEVIERVILLE — Tony Linginfelter figures that if it hadn’t been for football, he might have stayed in Greenback (pop. 954) in rural Loudon County. But his skills as a high school quarterback led him to Carson-Newman, then to the University of Tennessee where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees and, ultimately, in 1990, to Sevier County High School. This year, he has been named winner of Readers’ Choice teacher award.

Grizzell named best boss for second time By STAN VOIT Editor Surprised. That’s the word that keeps coming up in a conversation with Dwight Grizzell about winning the Readers’ Choice Best Boss award. “I am surprised and pleased and honored to be voted Best Boss for the second year, he said. “I want to thank our employees, the greatest group of people I have ever had the honor of working with, and also thank our customers for this honor. Grizzell, president and chief executive officer of Mountain National Bank,

said he was surprised to win the award for the second year in a row, but pleased to have done so. “It’s still enjoyable to come to work and be associated with the customers and the employees every day. I look forward to that, he said. It’s been a tough two years for Grizzell and the community banking industry, because of the sour economy, but he sees some sunshine breaking through. “It looks like in 2010 we are beginning to see some improvement in some areas, he said. “We See grizzell, Page 19

all the time. You have to stay alert around here. “But it’s a real honor to be picked as a teacher, to think you are having a positive impact on the lives of the kids. During his 26 years in education, Linginfelter has taught science and driver’s education, as well as his current advanced P.E. courses and being a football coach. He has served as offensive coordinator under Smoky Bears head coach Steve Brewer for more than a decade. There are similarities and differences between being a PE teacher and football coach. “There are relationships with kids in both cases, Linginfelter said. “In P.E., you only have them for a year and you get to know different kind of kids who aren’t into athletics. “In football, it is a different kind of relationship in that you watch kids growing up from freshmen to

seniors and becoming men. Perhaps not surprisingly, Linginfelter said the attitude of students toward taking P.E. classes has changed dramatically since he was growing up in the 1970s. “The biggest problem we face today is having kids participating, he said. “We have some who just don’t want to dress out and participate. When I was growing up, we couldn’t wait for P.E. So, does Linginfelter consider himself more of a football coach or a teacher? “I’m both, he said. “In football, you have to be a good teacher or you are not going to be successful. There’s a lot of teaching in football — not just how to do things, but how to get it better. “I think the same thing applies in the classroom. Linginfelter and wife Marisa have been married for 14 years and have a 13-year-old son, Zach, who is in the seventh grade and plays all sports at Sevierville Middle School. n bmayes@themountainpress.com

banking for 38 years, 21 of them in Sevier County. He laid the foundation for what became Mountain National Bank. He grew up in Winchester with former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer and entered banking right after college. He came to Sevier County in 1989 as

senior credit officer at First National Bank in Gatlinburg, In July 1994 he was named president of that institution. After the bank was sold, Grizzell took wife Micca’s advice and set out to start a new bank. In 1997 he called two dozen friends and customers he thought might have an interest in

investing in a new bank — the first in Sevier County in more than two decades. In 1998 Mountain National opened its doors, selling stock to the public. It has grown steadily since then. Grizzell has made sure

the bank supports a variety of community causes and agencies. It donated $250,000 to help pay for infrastructure improvements to a neglected area in the city of Sevierville. When the bank opened its newest branch on Newport

Highway, it collected donations for lunch and gave the money to the Sevier County Humane Society. Grizzell and his wife of 31 years have three children: Nathan, Sarah and David. They have one grandchild, 5-year-old Madelaine.

Littleton ties for top doctor position This year marks the 10th for Dr. Eric Littleton to be in practice in Sevierville. Fitting, then, that he would win the Readers’ Choice award for best doctor to cap off a decade of service to his patients. “It’s an honor, he said. It’s been a real joy to serve this community. It reminds me of the small town, Harriman, where I grew up. Sevierville has a small-town feel with 10 million visitors. Littleton tied for first place in this category with his partner, Dr. Robin Huskey. Along with Dr. Stephen Cole, the three form Great Smokies Family Practice, located in the Professional Office Building on the campus of LeConte Medical Center. “We love the new offices, he said of the facilities they moved into this year. Littleton has made his mark on the community in more ways than medicine. He is an accomplished pianist who sometimes performs at charity events, such as the recent Streams of Mercy banquet for Smoky Mountain Area Rescue Ministries. He composes music and has produced several CDs of his work. “I enjoy a range of music, he said. “I just enjoy playing. You can forget about your responsibilities of the day. Music is an outlet for me. Some people play golf. Everyone needs something to go to so they can unwind. His wife Julie is a pia-

nist and University of Memphis graduate who plays regularly for area churches. Their only child, 13-year-old Caleb, is a budding musician. He plays drums in the youth band at First Baptist Sevierville. Littleton also does sideline reporting for the weekly broadcasts of Sevier County High School football games. Littleton still finds

enjoyment in the practice of medicine. He likes the interaction with patients and getting the right diagnosis for someone in need. Dealing with insurance companies — well, that’s another matter indeed. It’s his least favorite part of being a doctor. Despite that, Littleton knows the best medical care anywhere in the world is found in the United States. He credits residency training that most graduates of U.S. medical schools experience before they hang their sign. “It’s the key to the success of our medical profession, he said. “It’s not

necessarily required. Littleton did his residency at Floyd Family Medicine in Rome, Ga., one of the prestigious residency programs for graduating doctors. It’s highly competitive to get accepted, Littleton said, and offers physicians a chance to practice a wide range of medicine. Littleton did his undergraduate work at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, then attended the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis. Two staff assistants have been with him since he opened his practice 10 years ago: Deb Hembree and Lisha Robertson.

Brent Freeman tops favorite pastor vote By STAN VOIT Editor Maybe it was inevitable that Brent Freeman would become a church pastor. After all, there are 19 pastors on both sides his family, and his grandfather was a preacher for 50 years. Not so fast. Though raised in a church pastored by his father, Larry Freeman, Brent Freeman didn’t consider himself a devoted Christian destined to preach. He wasn’t rebellious, but he just felt a little jaded about religion. Until age 17. That’s when it all changed and he got the call. The 2010 favorite pastor in Readers’ Choice balloting co-founded Pathways Church with his parents, Larry and Pat, about 15 years ago. They started out meeting on Sundays in the Seventh-

Day Adventist Church on Highway 66, the moved to the Sevierville Civic

home in the industrial park across the street from Sevier County High School. The nondenominational church has a sanctuary that can hold 850 people, and just opened a youth facility where young people go for their own worship service. Services are held Saturday nights and twice on Sunday mornings, with plans to add a third Sunday service. Upwards of a thousand people worship each Sunday, Freeman said. Pathways is contemporary, as opposed to traditional. “We preach the way of the cross,” he said. “We cut through the denominational barrier. We have to orbit our lives around the church and around Christ. Jesus went around people.”

Pastor 1) Brent Freeman, Pathways Church 2) Ronnie Reagan, Gum Stand Baptist 3) Rowland Buck, Kodak United Methodist

Services at Pathways are filled with contemporary music and lots of visuals and technical flourishes. Freeman said they might use secular songs if they make the point he wants to make. Freeman makes no apology for Pathways having very contemporary services. Methods may change, he said, but the message he and the church want to convey does not. The goal is to attract people to hear the message, and if that requires contemporary approaches, he will do it. Pathways has a num-

ber of young adults and young families attending services. Each of the three services is identical to the other. Freeman is 40, which he says is the average age of those who attend Pathways services. He and is wife of 20 years, Giovanna, have two children, Miranda, 20, and Mason, 7. The new youth/student life facility, called The Hangar because it is right next to the runway of the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Airport, opened in October. Freeman is pleased with his Readers’ Choice win. “It’s amazing what God can do in the life of a church,” he said. “So many pastors do the right thing. Sometimes it becomes too competitive. But winning this award is a pretty cool thing. It shows the strength and growth of the church.”

Jim Smith in love with entertaining By STAN VOIT Editor There are days when you don’t feel well, when the idea of performing before an audience just isn’t what you’d really want to be doing. No matter, When that’s how you make a living, you fall back on the axiom, “The show must go on. It has gone on for a number of years for Jim Smith, this year’s Readers’ Choice winner for best local entertainer. “I look at it this way, he said. “I give it my best regardless of what I am trying to do. That’s what I tell my children. All you can do is the best you can do. Sometimes you can fool the people, but inside your heart you are the one who knows if you are giving it 100 percent. Smith still gets a charge

out of each show he, his brother and nephew perform at Smith Family Dinner Theater in Pigeon Forge. They opened the theater about six years ago, and in 2009 made it a dinner theater, which has been successful. Smith has been performing for a lot longer than the theater has been opened. A former school teacher, he and his brother Charlie began working together about 25 years ago and started a show at Dollywood. That led to gigs at other venues, including some when Jim Smith performed as a solo act. In 2003 he used to sing

in the Old Mill Village at the gazebo. The brothers, joined by Charlie’s son Charlie Bob, formed a team and opened the theater in 2004. Other family members take part, either on stage or behind the scenes. Smith admits he still gets a little nervous before every show, but that passes as soon as he walks out in front of the audience. “It’s like waiting for the kickoff if you’re a football player, he said. This has been a challenging time for Smith. He has endured three surgeries in less than a year, starting last December when he had an operation to repair a ruptured disc gone bad. It was causing unbearable pain in his hips and lower back. He continued to perform as often as he could, sometimes sitting in a chair to entertain the audience.

Son Alex practices law full-time in the office. Every Friday the father and children dine out together. Johnson lost his wife Glenda to cancer two years ago. “I love having then around. I think they’re great kids. They have grown into mature adults. We enjoy being around each other, and I am fortunate they enjoy being around me. They are all great conversa-

Alex earned a master’s at St. Andrew’s in Scotland. Ashley studied in Greece one semester. “They are savvy travelers,” Charlie Johnson said. He works hard and puts in the hours because, like almost every aspect of society, the economy has affected the practice of law as well. “I feel a very strong dedication to work a little harder to get us through this economic slump,” he said. “The law business is like all other businesses. We don’t have a corner on the market.” He plans to slow down eventually, to take more

time off. But not now. Johnson is grateful for the support of voters who chose him Best Lawyer. “I appreciate that people think of me and vote for me,” he said. Johnson didn’t finish law school until he was 35, after years spent working in his wife’s family business. He first set up a practice in Sevierville with David Maxwell. His current partner is Jeff Murrell.

Dr. Huskey, left, with nurse Marvina Warren.

As a child she sometimes went on rounds at the hospital with her father, a pharmacist. “I hung out with him as he made his rounds and I knew right then what I wanted to do,” Robin Huskey said. She graduated from Sevier County High, then the University of Tennessee before heading off to medical school in Memphis. In 2006 he joined Dr. Eric Littleton in his Sevierville practice. Today, Great Smokies Family Practice includes Dr. Stephen Cole,

but it’s Littleton and Huskey who are in the spotlight today. They tied in the Readers’ Choice balloting for favorite doctor. “It’s incredible,” Dr. Huskey said of her award. “It’s humbling. I know the caliber of

medical care in this community. It’s excellent. We have a strong group of physicians in Sevier County. It’s humbling to be considered among them.” Huskey grew up in Pigeon Forge, the daughter of Ricky and Barbara Huskey. She has a brother, Ryan. This has been an eventful year for Huskey in other ways. In April she married Jim Takacs, an appraiser for Blalock Companies.

Huskey linked up with Littleton after spending a month on rotation with him while in her residency period. Like all UT medical school graduates, she had to do a rural medical rotation. Weighing an option of staying at the UT Medical Center in geriatrics, she instead chose to join Littleton. And is glad she did. “It worked out better,” she said. “I didn’t See Huskey, Page 28

Tino still favorite artist By GAIL CRUTCHFIELD Community Editor

Robert Tino says it never gets old being voted Readers’ Choice favorite local artist.

Robert Tino has been a consistent and strong winner of the local artist category since the first year The Mountain Press held the Readers’ Choice awards, but he said it doesn’t grow old. “There’s so much talent in this county, it’s kind of neat that people still vote you No. 1,” Tino said while sitting outside of this See tino, Page 29

think I’d have the opportunity to come back home. I very much love the heritage of Sevier County. My family has always been here.” She sees a lot of patients who know her family and remember her as a child. She likes that. It reinforces her connection to home. Her new husband has had to get used to the irregular hours of a doctor. Huskey says she gets calls day and

night and weekends. It’s part of the territory. Takacs also shares custody of a 6-yearold son, so Huskey has gotten a taste of parenthood. She hopes to start a family with her hew husband one day. Until then, Huskey is happy practicing family medicine. “Every day is different,” she said. “Every patient is different. You can see babies one minute and nursing home patients the next.” In addition to her medical duties, Huskey

has been a member of the SafeSpace board for a year. That agency works with victims of domestic violence, She also does mission trips, and the walls of her portion of the office suite are covered with photos she has made in different countries.

Douglas Dam Road gallery. Though not a Sevier County native, Tino has come to claim the area as his own since his parents moved him and his older brother here in 1977. “I’m a Smoky Bear,” said the Sevier County High School graduate. Tino said he began painting when he was 12 years old. “It’s just something I started doing,” he said, relating it back to his love of music. “I’ve always been musically inspired to do things and I guess that I was just drawing what I saw in music. Then one thing led to another.” The mountains and valleys of his new East Tennessee home inspired him to paint the landscapes that were so different from where he came. The landscape and climate of Greenwood, S.C., was very flat, he said, compared to the that of the Smoky Mountains. “It was flat and up here you get four distinct seasons and you’ve got a lot of atmosphere here in this place,” he said. “Seems things change every day.” Tino said he paints about 50 to 60 new paintings every year, usually starting with a name for the painting before completing the painting itself. The Smokies and surrounding areas provide him with the inspiration for his art. “I go out and hike a lot,” he said. “A lot of my rural scenes are done at favorite places around Sevierville. But as far as the mountains, going up and hiking and just spending time up there, it’s very inspiring.” He never completes

a painting on site, he said, insteading doing a sketch and taking photographs that he’ll use as reference once he gets in his studio. Tino isn’t the only one in his family who is artistically inclined. His brother Rick is also an artist and gallery owner, based out of Gulf Shores, Ala., Tino said. Tino and his wife Mary John have two children, a son Riley and a daughter, Cleo. He said both of his children are artistic, but to different degrees. “Riley is more of an architect. He likes straight lines and is kind of mathematical, and Chloe is more of an expressionist,” Tino said. n gcrutchfield@themountainpress.com

Sandy Stolz loves her work as bank teller By GAIL CRUTCHFIELD Community Editor The Mountain Press Readers’ Choice winner for bank teller has only been a teller for seven years, but in that time she’s developed quite a following. You can usually find Sandy Stolz at one of the two drive-through windows at the main branch of Mountain National Bank in Sevierville. That’s where she’s been most of the last seven years since she was hired at the bank. Before that, she ran Mother Goose Day Care with her sister.

“I had a day care for 17 years,” said Stolz, a Sevierville mother of four and grandmother of six. “I wanted a different career.” That career turned out to be in banking, specifically at Mountain National. “Well, I’d heard a lot See stolz, Page 30

By GAIL CRUTCHFIELD Community Editor To have only been in Sevier County four years, Polly Williams is surprised that she was voted the top hair stylist in The Mountain Press Readers’ Choice Awards. “It’s an honor that they would take the time to put my name down, Williams said of those who put her name on the ballot. “Because, you know, you don’t just get it by chance. Williams, with her daughter Lori Cole, is the owner of Hair Expo. They bought the business from the previous owners almost two years ago, more than two years after Williams and her husband Selby moved from Memphis to East Tennessee. “We came here to retire and both of us are back to work, she said. I’m giving great customer service, which is what this bank is about. “But I don’t want to take all the praise. Those other girls down there are great, too. We are a team and well all work well together to strive to make this bank what it is, because we want Dwight to be as proud of us as we are of him. Stolz is a Sevier County native, having grown up in Pigeon Forge. But what she really loves are her clients. “Just the connection with people, she said. “I love people. “All of my customers are really like family, she said. “I mean, everybody can tell you that. Everyone, and this is no lie, everyone that sits in my chair is special and I think they realize that. She passed on that love of hair styling to Cole, one of her two daughters. “That’s all she ever wanted to do, Williams said of her daughter. Her other daughter is Shannon Delashmit, who works at a local bank. Between them, her daughters have given Williams three grandchildren. The most recent addition is 5-week-old Megan Cole, with Brianna Cole and Noah Delashmit rounding out the count so far. When she’s not taking care of the clients in her styling chair or watching over her grandchildren, Williams said she likes to paint, usually using acrylic paint on rocks. “I paint deer and I did, I think, 500 ladybugs on little rocks for the Alzheimer’s Association, she said. “My daughter works for the bank and they were doing that.

McCarter is still surprised and humbled at the honor. McCarter, who is currently on maternity leave after the Aug. 23 birth of her first child, daughter Addison, said she wasn’t even aware voting was under way until she was informed by her boss that she won the title again. “I don’t know,” she said with a laugh when asked why she keeps winning the award. She thinks it may be a simple matter of the number of people she gets to meet in her job in the cath lab at LeConte Medical Center. “We do a lot of outpatient procedures, so instead of me having three or four a day, I may see 25 patients a day,” she said. “I think it’s an honor,” she

I feel blessed to be recognized.” Born and raised in Sevier County, McCarter is the daughter of Mike and Tammie Sutton. Her grandparents are J.B. and Shirley Matthews, and George and Sue Sutton. She is married to Travis McCarter, an attorney with Baker and Associates in Sevierville. After graduating from Sevier County High School, McCarter earned her bache-

A nurse for the last four years, McCarter said that is all she’s ever wanted to do. “Even when I was little I just loved it. That’s what I would play, what I loved to do,” she said. That desire was cemented when she became sick and spent a lot of time in the hospital herself. McCarter said she dealt with stomach issues from about sixth grade all the way into high school. “I was in and out of the hospital quite a bit and I always enjoyed the nurses and watching what they did,” she said. “It was just always what I wanted to do. There was never an option (of anything else). I feel blessed to be in a profession that I love.”

Veterinarian Scott Bartley all about helping animals By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer Scott Bartley, owner of Parkway Animal Hospital, believes it’s equal parts compassion for the pets he treats and their owners that has made him a back-toback winner in Readers’ Choice among local veterinarians. “Don’t ever say in your interview for veterinary school that you want to work with animals because you don’t like people,” he says. “For any vet to be successful, they have to have

clients. When our clients are here, they talk about everything. We really get to know them and they’re part of our family.” The staffers at the clinic on South Boulevard in Sevierville say they really do consider those who have dedicated their lives to helping animals there a family and see those they serve as part of that clan. Some of their broth-

ers and sisters are a little hairier, more scaly or drop more feathers than others, but it’s all kin to Bartley and his employees. From an early age Bartley knew his career would be dictated by his love of animals. As he was growing up in north Alabama, Bartley believed he would be a forest ranger until he worked with a veterinarian during his college days. Since then, Bartley has been all about helping man’s and woman’s best See bartley, Page 34

Police officer

SEVIERVILLE — Winning the Readers’ Choice Award is old hat now for Sevierville police officer Michael Maddron. The officer has won the award for the past three years in a row. For added perspective, he’s only been a police officer for four years. He was humbled when he learned he’d been honored a third time. “I just want to thank the people of Sevier County for voting me their favorite officer three times in a row,” he said. He’s not sure what’s made him a top choice among law enforcement

officers from all over the county three straight years, he said, but he said he tries to be as nice as he can to anyone he deals with, regardless of the situation. “I really enjoy working for the good people of Sevierville, and trying to make a difference,” he said. Looking ahead, he said he’s interested in

teaching Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) classes and in becoming a sergeant. He credited Chief Donnie Myers and shift supervisor Terry Bryan for giving him a chance to be a patrolman. Beyond that, he is also hoping to have a career in local politics. While he can’t run for a municipal office as long as he’s a city police officer, he can run for County Commission and said he hopes to do so eventually. When he’s not patrolling the city streets, he said he spends most of his time in the gym. Maddron is also a member of First Baptist Church of Sevierville.

Top real estate agent finds job can be very challenging By DEREK HODGES Staff Writer It may seem strange, but at a time when many young men of that age are hardpressed to make weekend plans, much less game out their futures, Readers’ Choice Realtor Ben Hughes was drawing up a proposal for a business. It was in an economics class as a sophomore that Hughes, owner of Colonial Real Estate, started dreaming of a company he wanted to own one day. He called it Hometown Realty. “I created a business model for it and the name made sense to me because it’s my hometown and I want to sell it to people,” Hughes explains. “Being in real estate has always been something I’ve wanted to do. I just knew early on I wanted to do this.” With that motivation driving him, Hughes started working toward getting his Realtor’s license right after he graduated from high school in 1998. He took up working for Colonial and eventually bought the company, which was founded in 1985, two years ago. Since then he has worked hard every day to keep the business’ two sides, real estate and overnight lodging rentals, running strong. While the job can be challenging, he admits much of his work is See Hughes, Page 36

actually already done for him. That’s because the Smoky Mountain area’s reputation as a tourist destination keeps a steady stream of customers checking in and out of the cabins and condos the company manages. “The good thing about this area is people want to be here,” Hughes says. “They’re always coming here and they’re going to keep coming here, so we don’t have to attract them to the area. That helps a lot.” Of course, it’s not just tourists who love the area and they’re not the only ones Hughes can help with getting a Sevier County roof

over their heads. But, like those temporary residents, those who plan to stay here more permanently, be they locals looking for a new home or visitors who decided to settle here, are drawn to the area because of what it has to offer. “It sells itself,” Hughes says. “There’s so much to see and to around here. The national park definitely makes it an easy sell and the cities are all great. People just like to be here. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who doesn’t like the

Smoky Mountains.” Hughes admits his own love of the area is likely contagious for those he’s showing houses to. He has no plans to ever live anywhere else and looks forward to continuing to raise his 8-year-old son Caleb here. Hughes says he was surprised, excited and honored when he heard he’d been chosen as the top Realtor in the area for the first time, with his next-closest finish a third place that came several years ago. He admits with a laugh that he didn’t even get to vote for himself since he was out of town when the ballots came out in The Mountain Press. Still, he believes he knows the formula for

running a realty company that people enjoy working with. “The way I look at it, real estate is about relationships you build with people,” he says. “I think it’s important to be out there and active in the community, too. It’s important for us to give back to this community.” After a few years pursuing his dream, Hughes is still certain real estate is where he belongs. “When I have the chance to pair people with a property and you can see when they walk in that you’ve found just what they’ve been hoping for, that’s awesome,” he says.
