I

n this sophomore issue of the Multiple eXposure Project zine,“Moving Still”, we feature a heterogeneous breed

of new media and video artists whose experimental and provocative works emphasize the potency of “videos” or “moving images” in the exploration and expansion of self-representation in the discursive flow of transmission and mediation – from the screen to the spectator; and the perceptive to the conceptual. Selected artists here make use of the “screen” as medium and performance space. By displaying, curating, and performing in front of the screen, self-image-formation is enacted while relying on playful encounter with unknown spectators in order to weave different webs of interpretation. In this regard, the screen operates as an intermediary in the artist’s performance that brings connections to identities, personal narratives, history, everyday politics, and imaginaries. The symbiotic relationship between the screen and the subject cultivates the construction of an image or spectacle that is consumed – temporally and spatially - in a doubling of intermediation. They deflect and reflect a plethora of shifting, hybrid pretexts about ourselves within the digital ecology where the delineating lines between the public and the private; the human and the mechanical; and the material and the virtual boundaries become blurred. Given their hyperreal structure, these video performances, visual interventions, and recorded choreographies trigger a mode of mediated encounter that heavily manipulates moments of reality – of space and time. Intimacy and presence are concomitantly altered as these pieces can be incessantly scrutinized by the gaze of many anonymous viewers floating in the digital currents, allowing us to re-locate the individual and re-think about the concept of selfhood more fluidly.

the zoom series------------

T

he Zoom Series is an ongoing series of video works that recontextualizes the multi-touch gestures of digital devices. Technology and its devices teach bodies new gestural lexicons: simply put, we’ve learned to move differently. The Zoom Series highlights these new movements by removing the digital device from the picture entirely, leaving only their gestures behind. This series explores the animation of the body through technological gesture.

Liat Berdugo [USA/Israel] https://vimeo.com/album/2122984

[the multiple exposure project zine 2.0] www.themultipleexposureproject.co.nr

The Original Zoom was filmed in 2012 with the iSight camera of a Macbook Pro laptop. It is an exercise in self-enlargement: I move my body closer to the camera to make it bigger. Intimate relations are relations of proximity and closeness, both metaphorically but also quite literally. With intimacy bodies get closer. Bodies have many gestures of getting closer, but digital technologies have mostly one: zooming. The video ends with an intimate, close view of the face. Under U.S. Copyright Law, works of dance are copyrightable. So while Apple, Inc. owns the patent to the pinch-to-zoom gesture for touch and hover sensitive devices, I own the copyright to the “dance” of zooming myself. US Patent Number 7877707 belongs to Apple; US Copyright Number 913988071 belongs to me. This series includes works that explore other gestures other than zooming: rotating, panning, scrolling, and double tapping. But as if by compulsion, I kept returning to the pinch-to-zoom  — a gesture of enlarging what was once small, touching devices as if we wanted to become intimate with them — or at least, with their contents.

Liat Berdugo is an artist, writer, and curator based in Oakland, CA. Her work strives to create an expanded, thoughtful consideration for digital culture. Berdugo has been exhibited in galleries and festivals internationally, and her new book, The Everyday Maths, was published by Anomalous Press in 2013. She curates video art for Print Screen, Israel’s international festival of digital art, cofounded the Bay Area’s Living Room Light Exchange, and collaborates widely with individuals and archives. Berdugo holds a BA in mathematics and philosophy from Brown University and an M.F.A. in Digital + Media art from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Laura Hyunjhee Kim is a new media artist who primarily works with video, performance and the Internet. Approaching the Internet as a creative tool and platform for distribution, she pulls source materials from the everyday including her own social media feeds. Appropriating familiar imagery and stylistic formalities from popular culture, Kim often embeds absurd deadpan humor, satire and parody in her work as a means to generate conversation within the on/offline communities the work is shared with. Kim's recent works have been subjected to her "It's Complicated" relationship with technology that heavily relies on the Internet. Kim received her B.S. in Art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and M.F.A. from the New Genres Department, San Francisco Art Institute. Kim currently resides and works in San Francisco, California.

[the multiple exposure project zine 2.0] www.themultipleexposureproject.co.nr

Nicola Hands is a fine artist based in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Through the creation of sacred spaces, multi-media installations and oil painting, Hands endeavor to explore the legacy of colonial Britain and the evolution of modern celebrity obsession and consumer worship. The disparateness of the world’s population has created a revolution which manifests itself in subculture and fandom that confirms a sense of tribal identity and belonging. As a British woman of mixed British, Irish, Indian and Jamaican ethnic origin my connection to this country is often fraught with contradicting and often aggressive messages. Combining ready made merchandise, painstakingly constructed altar pieces, video performance and racist kitsch I have begun to understand and re-establish my multi-cultural persona within the praxis of western society.

Primarily working in photography and video, Tony Radin Jacobs’ aesthetic draws on tableaux and documentary conventions while candidly scrutinizing the white-collar suburban culture in which he grew up. Pervasive in this environment is competitiveness, peer judgment and ridicule. Residing in this culture’s line of fire, he investigates the subversion of socially normative behavior like drug addiction, the abject, and heterosexuality as it is constructed by pornography while probing the realms of class, religion and family. By questioning the status quo, he initiates dialog regarding issues experienced by many but commonly suppressed.

(c) merry is Czech conceptual and digital artist based primarily on Internet. She is fascinated by the specific syntactic structure of internet and its various distinctive areas with their specific vernaculars and expression modes (facebook, YouTube etc.). Her concern also lies on converting the structural and expressive of the Internet into the physical world, and on exploring the boundaries of the institution of authorship. She is best known for her YouTube based artproject, interventions and net art installations, and for body of performances on-line as well as off-line (with the longest one taking over a year). Since 2013 she consistently develops the concept of guerilla curating and is devoted to the conceptual level of glitch art. Especially in her photographic and video works, she opposes the “uncritical acceptance of the major contemporary aesthetic convention embodied by perfect HD image that leads to discrimination of low quality as valid aesthetic standard. This is related to the development of creative/author potential of the medium itself, which is seen as one of the equal co-authors. She is in the use of alias (c) merry for her artistic activities since 2011.

Under the name Mary Meixner she acts as critical and theoretical writer and curator, concerned primarily with internet art. She is ia editor of Experimental cinema, moving image and contemporary art section of Film magazine 25fps, co-curates Screen Saver Gallery (on-line contemporary digital art gallery started in 2013) and PAF, Festival of film animation and modern art in Olomouc, Czech Republic. nicole kidman pillow DIY---------

H

ow come I’m fully aware of the twisted body image the media in feeding me, but, at the same time, can’t ignore the urge to botox my mouth corners? In Nicole Kidman Pillow DIY, I walk you through the making of a pillow with Nicole Kidman’s pictures. I use Google and Photoshop to create a digital collage of the actresses, an online service to print this collage on a fabric and then a sewing machine to make a throw pillow cover. Between all that I talk about the double standard the media shows when it comes to women’s aging. I use Kidman’s public persona, as well as my own insecurities, to talk about the conflicted experience of being a woman nowadays, knowing that there will be no place for me on the screen once my aging signs will get apparent.

eye contact------

T

hrough the use of projection, layering/masking, and the manipulation of light, EYE CONTACT explores the repercussions and implications of

forced consumption. Impersonal depictions of femininity are made uncomfortably intimate through the viewer's close relationship with the subject. Both strong, yet vulnerable, the subject silently attempts to find her place in this realm as she becomes nothing more than just another surface to project onto.

[the multiple exposure project zine 2.0] www.themultipleexposureproject.co.nr

Adrian Errico is a video artist from Tampa, Florida.

Working primarily with digital media, Errico makes experimental narratives that break away from linear modes of storytelling. Through heavy editing, the artist manipulates audio, cutting, layering, and green-screening to allow the viewer to reside in a liminal experience that is between dreamscape and reality. For Errico, the construction of video is contiguous with the construction of memory, and she uses her video installations to activate spaces with a mysterious dialogue that is both highly private and internal. Errico earned her BFA at the the University of South Florida, and is currently pursuing an MFA degree at Florida State University.

ideofeedback as a reflection of a screen on itself, as a self-consciousness process, a visual and conceptual reflection on a surface that is not only a transparent glass made to link the inside with the outside. On the contrary, this screen has a concrete and independent substance being visible by a looped-input-light, like a double mirror. The object (the medium) through mediation of a new medium (the human subject) becomes a subject itself. With this process the medium becomes the message for real, the invisible comes visible and the technological unconscious is open.

At the origin of each of his creations, musicality plays a role as important as image does and each one influences the other by transmediality.

The result is a series of experimental videos, generative animations, performances and interactive installations where sound and image are so inseparable that the one without the other would lose its meaning.

ince taking power on 22nd May 2014, Thailand's military authorities have jailed opposition leaders, set a curfew and shut down hundreds of websites. They have also cracked down on academics and journalists. Now we are facing the problem of freedom of expression in Thailand. After 1932, when the absolute monarchy was abolished, Thailand has had 25 general elections and 19 coups d'état. So, I’m just thinking about “I have to do something”. Then I try to express my mind. After a month, I have decided to make a short video and dedicate it to those who have been jailed due to political issues, especially academics, journalists and individualists who fought against the power by wisdom. I also try to reflect the myth from my hometown in north-east Thailand about ghost and soul. The souls couldn't get away from their places, their memory. They get stuck in their rooms forever.

Mr. Manasak Khlongchainan is a filmmaker from Thailand. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication art, Major in Broadcasting and Film at Bangkok University.

Artistic Statement: In Thailand, most people grew up with a tale, especially ghost stories and the supernatural. These inspire me. When I make a short film or a video work, I usually link my work with mysterious things because I think the film is a medium that can do anything and very free. In all of my works, I always try to experiment using transformation, distorting structure, and letting the sense bring me to the end, as our life can’t predict the future. I grew up in the Northeast Thailand where there are so many ghost stories from the past to the present. Many narratives are very interesting which relate to poor rural people, human greed, love and the social class. I’m so fascinated with all of them. These have become my ideologies to create films and videos. Nowadays, I am also interested in human rights and the political issues in Thailand.

T

he title of this short video comes from a song of Fela Kuti, where water has a political meaning. This work, however, is not political at all. If I should explain what this is, I would say that it's a single channel video-sound piece, non-narrative, but strongly poetical or evocative, or at least tries to. The realization of pieces like these is totally out of control, I just follow the stream and links of images, perceptions and symbols. Water has no political meaning at all, I said before, and the link to Fela Kuti is just an evidence of how hard choosing a title is, sometimes. Water has a wide range of meanings and perceptive stimuluses, and the easiest way to describe how I see it is by remembering Virginia Woolf's vision, as a cosmic mother, silent but benign, often contradictory but totalizing, all-embracing. Being is the ability to be opened on the horizon of the totality which coincides with the thought. On this horizon I wander myself about the difference between

the smart kitchen -------I

am trying to point out the deficiencies in certain human institutions and the social issues which result from them in such a way that they become absurd, even hilarious, which is therefore both entertaining and accessible. It aims to keep collective conscience alert; it exposes absurdity for what it is and makes those inclined to adopt foolish or tasteless fashions aware that what they espouse is ridiculous. It shows society its own features and makes it odious to the sentient. So often satire in the visual arts is portrayed as anti-progressive, yet its ability to offer cutting critique is positive when aimed at the right targets as I demonstrate.

Artist Statement: I create or seek to create images that are constantly being created in and around me, thanks to the great image journey called life. So, the things I paint, draw, install, make video, do photography or sculpt, originate from my everyday engagement with Reality. This is a Reality which, for me, is made of mundane happenings and uncanny images which penetrate into each other regularly, often unexpectedly, leaving me bewildered. Born in a semi-urban area, very close to village, I had the fortune of getting in close contact with the rural area and nature– both spatially and psycho-spatially. Then I moved to Kolkata for my art education in 1999 and since then, I’ve been into the entrails of this megapolis. Such a geographical binary, and the tension within, have contributed largely to my imagination. For example, this has allowed me to perceive human bodies and nature in different settings, in different postures and hence, with different nuances.

In my recent works, I used satire to enable comparison, understanding and insight and holds up the flaws in our institutions, our nations, our species and, indeed, ourselves. The works combine history, politics and current events with levity and witty irreverence. In my ongoing project I have chosen pen and ink, videos and sculpture. In this project, work is subversive and a comment on the human condition itself offering the viewer a behind-the-scenes look at the heroic and the rational. Most of my subjects are familiar but recontextualized. In what they encompass or allude to, these works transcend the merely comically grotesque or the quest for objectivity. Assessing these works in terms of their insight, interest, coherence, complexity, depth or intelligibility involves a cluster of notions which are interdependent. The grotesque element in my art greatly adds to its value. It does not, however, descend into perverse nihilism which is not an artistically legitimate instance of the grotesque. My forthcoming project is on the theme of ‘Reconstruction of History’. I have planned to remake the old master’s in different settings in order to time and content.

He is Chinese-born and currently based in New York. Working mostly with simulated computer graphics, video, and photography, he often takes the idea of system as the entry point. He is interested in different types of systems, their emergence, operation, evolution, failure, and serendipitous moments, how we construct their narratives and histories, and their relationships with space, perception, communication, and identity. He studied literature in China before finishing film school at NYU, where he also dived into computer science.

clocking-------

I

n my understanding of time, time sometimes is not very accurate, influenced by the inner side of us. It automatically changes through our mood in situations.

In “Clocking, I tried to create a tool that would modify time by our movements. The pendulous time here fluctuates by the second hand and minute hand. They are disturbed by the camera image capture that people walk by. I wrote code in Processing software to create this real time interactive clock. Time speeds up or slows down by our different speed of life. I represent this clock in a small room space. Through the indivivual movements in front of the camera oprojected as a public clock. Visually, the live moving image reflection as the background of the clock becomes the mirror of time.

signifiers of ritual mask (animals)-----------

S

ignifiers of ritual mask (animals) looks at identity, in particular the uncertainty of identity and reformation of the self through the dual embodiment of a cultural heritage and new national identity. The experimental video is a visual investigation into the consequence of migration and the inversion of identity to reflect on a personal investigation into relocation, memory, nationality and duality of a personal identity: South Africa/Australia, I/we, white/black, one/other, shared memories/lived experiences, homeland/diaspora. The masked beings act as representations of the self, never revealing the identity of the being, except through the signifiers of national and cultural icons.

T

he Fading Piece is a duo stop-motion animation with sound. The animation on the right shows a diminishing pastel, while the left animation

reveals the development of a line-drawing on the Kwun Tong (located in Hong Kong) landscape, simultaneously, line by line. Gradually the skyline of the city is covered by black strokes left by the pastel. The landscape I animated no longer looks the same due to the urban renewal program in Hong Kong. In this work, I focus on the process of making an animation and restrict the role of animator, as the length of the animation is solely based on the natural consumption of the pastel. anima mentis-----------

A

nima Mentis, a video with stereo sound by Scott F. Hall, Eleni Manolaraki, and Elise Frost, overlays two separately filmed women engrossed in seemingly diametric pursuits: one endlessly turns the pages of books while the other moves and poses her body sequentially. Their activities are synchronized to sound which audibly recalls clockwork. The two figures embody the western binary between body and mind while commenting on the artificiality of this stark division. Their combined urgency as enhanced by the sound, the physical and mental contortion implied in their frantic activities, their paradoxically symmetrical movement, and their equally frustrated womanhood reveal more similarities between the physical and the mental than allowed in the traditional body-mind paradigm.

Wu Siou Ming [Taiwan] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBrvFU11Bqw 00:06:08

[the multiple exposure project zine 2.0] www.themultipleexposureproject.co.nr

Siou Ming is an audiovisual artist, his work include A/V, installations, live performance, incidental music, covering sound art and ambient electronic music. From hearing and perception side, Siou Ming’s work not only explores different values, people’s faith in modern life but also petites perceptions from living environment and where the various forms of existence are.

Artist Statement: My thoughts always proceed from experience of hearing to discuss how we sense our body in the expansion of experience in contemporary era. Along the way of abstract hearing thinking, I try to understand hearing and carry out new possibilities. How could we perceive sound and extend our experience to the poetry of existence?

In such a context, I care about the evolution between sound and environment and borrow a little concept of “place”. I think the environment will shape our emotional system, affecting our expression by using sound. I also aim to express the endemic emotional system by using sound and investigate various levels of production between sound and environment. In other words, I put the place as the subject to see the structural state of pre-production of sound, and see how we could transform sound into re-production of the local emotional system and personal signification.

daydream and

kundalini

stavah---------------

T

he human being is a miniature universe. Looking into our body means looking into the universe within, looking at “self-as-subject”. One aspect is masculine, and the other aspect is feminine, dynamic, energetic and creative. The feminine aspect is called Kundalini. This potential energy is said to rest at the base of the spinal cord. She will touch each chakras, which are affiliated with the senses (SMELL, TASTE, SIGHT, TOUCHING, HEARING, INTUITION) and then unite above the crown of the head with the masculine energy, the EQUILIBRIUM, the pure consciousness.

This is a metaphor for the spiraling energies of consciousness that move within us when spiritual awakening takes place. Kundalini works with whatever we have built ourselves to be. Whatever our encrustations and blocks, the fire in perfect equanimity uses everything good and bad to fuel the flame of consciousness. Chakras are the energy centres of the soul. There are actually more than 7 Chakras. The 7 Chakra system is the most conventional system to follow when obtaining ‘enlightenment’.

[the multiple exposure project zine 2.0] www.themultipleexposureproject.co.nr

There are chakras which are energy points or knots in the body, located at the physical counterparts of the major plexuses of arteries, veins and nerves. There are 7 chakras that are considered to be the most important ones and they are affiliated with the sense of SMELL, TASTE, SIGHT, TOUCHING, HEARING, INTUITION, EQUILIBRIUM, respectively. It is an ancient concept common in the East and the West, long time forgotten among people.

catharsis-----

W

ith the tip of a pencil, the line is marking

within the space of a sheet of paper. Its contact generates a script with fast and determined pace. Daring but fearful, sincere but nostalgic. Four individuals and their pencil reach a catharsis, preparing a letter for an absent reader and releasing all kinds of memories. Housed in a video, each sheet is seen broken, wrinkled or folded, state in which it becomes unreadable, then begin a transforming process. Slowly, the fire consumes the object sign of the catharsis; destroyed yet purified, memories translated into lines are offered as simple ashes.
