RACHEL S. MOORE
Before the curtain rises for what I know will be a mesmerizing performance by The Joffrey Ballet, I want to welcome you to The Music Center and our iconic Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. It is our honor to bring The Joffrey Ballet back to Los Angeles and to The Music Center for the first time since the 2018 Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center residency of the company’s beautiful Romeo & Juliet. Many Angelenos have a strong affinity for The Joffrey Ballet given its eightyear residency at The Music Center (from 1983–1991), and it is wonderful to have them back gracing the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion stage!
What you will see from The Joffrey this time is truly incredible as we present the Los Angeles debut of the company’s award-winning Anna Karenina. This powerful story about forbidden love is a glorious, stunning production, and the dancers are exquisite. With new choreography by Ukrainian-born choreographer Yuri Possokhov and a new score by award-winning composer Ilya Demutsky, this production is another example of the expansion of the ballet canon with stories centered on powerful women. Last summer, we were delighted to present the debut performance of Dutch National Ballet with Frida, the story of Frida Kahlo, and this coming July, we will present Ballet Hispánico (July 12–14) with an explosive portrait of Eva “Evita” Perón in Doña Perón. I hope you will join us to explore her legacy in a piece danced by the company that is considered the largest Latine cultural organization in the United States and one of America’s cultural treasures.
With these dance residencies, we are striving not only to dimensionalize the stories told onstage, but also to expand the reach and impact of the companies and these works by bringing dance-related opportunities to more people in Los Angeles. In the case of The Joffrey Ballet, we were delighted to partner with the company and the Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities Department to bring free dance workshops to senior citizens around Los Angeles County, featuring a Joffrey Ballet teaching artist. All workshop participants were also invited to attend a dress rehearsal of Anna Karenina
Summer is well underway at The Music Center, and we would love to have you come dance with us as we return with our much-beloved free program The Music Center’s Dance DTLA, offering eight Friday nights of dancing under the stars on Jerry Moss Plaza. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, X and Threads (@MusicCenterLA) for information about upcoming programs or visit musiccenter.org for more details.
Special thanks both to the amazing Glorya Kaufman, whose leadership has made it possible for us to experience some of the world’s most talented dance companies, and to Center Dance Arts, founding supporter of Dance at The Music Center, for their passion and dedication to dance in Los Angeles.
Enjoy the performance!

Train Station of the St. Petersburg Railway
An old station guard walks, forcing himself against a strong wind. Walking through the snow, the guard leaves behind a foot trail. A faceless crowd emerges from the shadows. The old man accidentally falls on the tracks and is crushed by an oncoming train. Among the horrified crowd are Anna Karenina and Alexey Vronsky. Anna and Vronsky meet and sense an immediate attraction.
ACT 1
SCENE 1 | MOSCOW

A longtime family friend, Constantine Levin, enters the salon. He is clearly in love with Kitty and makes a proposal, but she does not share the same feelings and declines with a heavy heart. Vronsky arrives and is greeted by Kitty, but he is distracted by a brief glimpse of Anna, who is leaving the house as he enters. Vronsky shows Kitty polite affection. Countess Nordston invites everyone to participate in a séance. During the séance, Vronsky has a vision of Anna.

NOTE FROM YURI POSSOKHOV
CHOREOGRAHER OF ANNA KARENINA
Anna Karenina is one of the most famous stories in all of literature. The novel is celebrated, both for its status as a 19th-century masterpiece and for the way it captures our imaginations still today. It is a ubiquitous cultural phenomenon, a story passed down from generation to generation, much in the manner of a timeless folktale.
As a choreographer, I had wanted to make this ballet for a long time. There were many opportunities to do so, but the circumstances were never right. When The Joffrey and Ashley Wheater, whom I’ve known for many years dating back to our time together at the San Francisco Ballet, approached me to create a world premiere in 2019, all the missing pieces fell into place. Conceiving a new full-length production, especially one of such incredible magnitude, was seamless at The Joffrey. Once the process began, it was impossible to contain the excitement.
The revival of Anna Karenina recalls the beautiful artistry that has come to define this production. Bringing the Australian Ballet on as a producing partner allowed us to commission an original score by the brilliant Illya Demutsky, one of the most sought-after composers working today. In addition, our award-winning set and costume designer, Tom Pye, is an artist in every sense of the word. His designs are both breathtaking and innovative; and our lighting designer, David Finn, has created such a magnificent sense of place that it often feels like a dream. Finn Ross’s projections veil and unveil the heart of the narrative, magnifying and articulate.
“What
you’ll see tonight is the result of many months of planning, collaboration and execution.”
I am deeply indebted to The Joffrey and my collaborators for making this Anna Karenina a reality, and I am especially thankful for The Joffrey artists and their work ethic. They bring this fascinating and complex story of love and family to life, a story that is truly for everyone.

We are thrilled to welcome The Joffrey Ballet back to The Music Center with its production of Anna Karenina, after the company’s long absence from Los Angeles. The ballet is a streamlined retelling of the Tolstoy classic, reduced to 12 scenes as opposed to the 239 chapters in the novel. It follows the story of Anna Karenina, who falls in love with Count Vronsky, leaves her husband Alexey Karenin and their son, which she ultimately regrets, and takes her own life. The work was co-commissioned by The Joffrey under the leadership of Ashley Wheater, the company’s artistic director since 2007, and The Australian Ballet.
Anna Karenina had its world premiere in 2019 to great critical acclaim at The Joffrey’s home theatre in Chicago. The choreographer, Ukrainian-born Yuri Passokhov, was awarded the Benois de la Danse (often referred to as “the Oscars of dance”) for best choreography that year. His choreography for this production, while contemporary by definition, is based in classical ballet technique, with the women dancing in pointe shoes.
The ballet is set to a commissioned score by Ilya Demutsky, performed here by a live orchestra comprised primarily of members of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra. The music includes complex harmonies as well as melodies from folk songs popular during Tolstoy’s lifetime. It also features a vocalist, which is very unusual for ballet scores.
The costumes, which were created by British designer Tom Pye, evoke the Imperialist Era of the 19th century; however, the scenery, also by Pye, which includes film projections, is decidedly contemporary. From a single piece of furniture in one scene to a fully realized train station in another, the settings help to evoke the 19th century, but with 21st century design aesthetics.
Thank you for joining us for this performance of The Joffrey Ballet’s Anna Karenina. I hope you enjoy it!

ASHLEY
WHEATER, MBE, The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director
The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet Ashley Wheater has dedicated his life to dance. He was born in Scotland and trained at The Royal Ballet School in England. He worked with Frederick Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan and Michael Somes in numerous ballets at Covent Garden, including Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Manon, Anastacia and The Dream. Wheater danced with Rudolf Nureyev in Nureyev and Friends at the London Coliseum.
On Nureyev’s advice, Wheater joined the London Festival Ballet and danced in Nureyev’s Romeo and Juliet and Sleeping Beauty. He danced in Glen Tetley’s Sphinx and Greening and in Festival Ballet’s large repertoire of classics and new creations. Under the artistic direction of John Field, he was promoted to Principal Dancer at the age of 20.
In 1982, he joined The Australian Ballet where he continued dancing principal roles in both classical and contemporary work, especially in the John Cranko full-length ballets.
In 1985, at the invitation of Gerald Arpino, Wheater joined The Joffrey Ballet. For the next four years, he performed various works by American choreographers including William Forsythe, Gerald Arpino, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor and Laura Dean, as well as repertoire by Ashton and Cranko.
Joining the San Francisco Ballet in 1989, he continued his creative career working under Helgi Tomasson, and with choreographers James Kudelka, David Bintley and many more. In 1997, he retired from dancing and was appointed Ballet Master and, later, Assistant to the Artistic Director at the San Francisco Ballet.
Since his appointment in 2007 as artistic director of The Joffrey Ballet, his passion and commitment to The Joffrey have been evident in the quality that he has brought to the dancing and to the repertoire. He has invited world-renowned choreographers, as well as fresh
young talent, to create new work for the company. Wheater has added new full-length works to The Joffrey’s repertoire, including Lar Lubovitch’s groundbreaking Othello, Ronald Hynd’s The Merry Widow and Yuri Possokhov’s Don Quixote
In 2008, Wheater was the recipient of the Boeing Game-Changer Award in recognition of his commitment to community engagement in Chicago and to the celebration of diversity through dance. He sits on the Advisory Board for Dance Magazine, serves as the Artistic Advisor for ChiArts and is the Advisor to the Arts for the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. In 2010, Wheater, representing The Joffrey Ballet, was named Lincoln Academy Laureate, the highest honor presented by the State of Illinois, and in 2013, the Chicago Tribune named him “Chicagoan of the Year.” In 2015, Wheater received the University of Chicago Rosenberger Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the Creative and Performing Arts. In December 2019, he was appointed to be a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES
Support from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors plays an invaluable role in the successful operation of The Music Center.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
As a steward of The Music Center of Los Angeles County, we recognize that we occupy land originally and still inhabited and cared for by the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh and Chumash Peoples. We honor and pay respect to their elders and descendants — past, present and emerging — as they continue their stewardship of these lands and waters. We acknowledge that settler colonization resulted in land seizure, disease, subjugation, slavery, relocation, broken promises, genocide and multigenerational trauma. This acknowledgment demonstrates our responsibility and commitment to truth, healing and reconciliation and to elevating the stories, culture and community of the original inhabitants of Los Angeles County.
We are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these ancestral lands. We are dedicated to growing and sustaining relationships with Native peoples and local tribal governments, including (in no particular order) the:
• Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians
• Gabrielino Tongva Indians of California Tribal Council
• Gabrieleno/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians
• Gabrieleño Band of Mission Indians-Kizh Nation
• San Manuel Band of Mission Indians
• San Fernando Band of Mission Indians
Janice Hahn Supervisor, Fourth District
Hilda L. Solis Supervisor, First District
Lindsey P. Horvath Chair, Third District
Kathryn Barger Supervisor, Fifth District
Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District
This acknowledgment, however, is empty without our efforts to counter the effects of structures that have long enabled injustice against Native Americans. The Music Center is committed to working with First Peoples to build and sustain partnerships and grow collaborations that engage and respect the knowledge, expertise and agency of First Peoples, past, present and future. The Music Center strives to be a champion of the arts in Los Angeles for all people. We are listening, learning, unlearning, and will evolve in the work ahead.
