PARTICIPATING IN WORSHIP

The Lutheran Church is a liturgical church. Lutherans believe that the Gospel is not only good news that Jesus has saved sinners, but also a power God uses to create and strengthen faith in Jesus. Lutheran worship places the Gospel as the central focus in an order of service called the liturgy. In message and meal (Holy Communion), in specially selected Bible readings, and in carefully crafted songs, prayers and confessions, the liturgy points to Jesus as the Savior of all. To participate in the service, follow along through these liturgies. Lutheran worship is specifically designed to include the participation of the people. We are not here to be an audience, we are here to speak and sing the Word of God to each other. Parts marked with a thin outline are spoken by a leader, and parts fully filled in are spoken by the congregation. Congregational parts are also printed in bold. Here are the parts for this week: b Bishop a Assisting Minister C Congregation

HOLY COMMUNION

Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at 6:15 a.m. GATHERING

Stand The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

p As a community of faith, rooted in the hope of the resurrection to eternal life, we lift our voice in praise and thanksgiving, and so we begin our worship in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen Kneel/Sit Silence for reflection and self-examination.

CONFESSION

p We lift our heads and bow our hearts before the throne of God assured that our heavenly Father listens to our supplications. Let us in confidence lift to almighty God all those things that have kept us away from him: the things we should have done but did not do—the words we should have spoken, but decided to keep silent—the thoughts that were inappropriate and kept us from centering on him, his Word and will. C Almighty gracious and loving God, we are your children. We believe that it was for us and people like us that you sent your Son, Jesus Christ to live our lives and to die on the cross for us. We thank you for all your gifts and means of grace. On our part, we have not done, nor said, nor thought the way you want your children to do, speak and think. For these and for all our shortcomings, we come to you in confidence, believing that you never turn any of your children away. So we ask you to forgive us those sins we intentionally committed and those we committed without even noticing. We seek your forgiveness Lord, and we ask you to lead us in a life of faith and true discipleship. Through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen FORGIVENESS

p Be assured, my friends, that the God of our faith is a loving and forgiving God. You need to worry about your sins no more. God’s love for you surpasses all understanding. I therefore assure you that if you meant what you asked for, God will forgive you all your sins: in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen

51

p Blessed is the kingdom of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen KYRIE

p With reverent hearts, we pray to you, O Lord, C Lord, have mercy.

p For the Church throughout the world, for all Christians and for the prosperity of the faithful, we pray to you, O Lord, C Lord, have mercy. p For our Bishop John and workers in the church. For all the clergy and those who dedicated their lives to preach, teach and live exemplary Christian lives, we pray to you, O Lord, C Lord, have mercy. p For peace on earth, for an eradication of hate, violence and abuse; for all those who labor and toil to make a living, we pray to you, O Lord, C Lord, have mercy. p For the sick and suffering, the hungry and homeless, the lonely and forgotten, refugees and the marginalized, the addicted and the recovering, we pray to you, O Lord, C Lord, have mercy. p For the protection of the men and women serving in the armed forces, that their mission be that of spreading peace and an end to all wars, we pray to you, O Lord, C Lord, have mercy. p Help us, save us, protect us, guide us and have mercy on us, O holy Father, by your grace, C Amen p Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest, C Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest. p To God be glory forever, C To God be glory forever. p Alleluia! Amen! C Alleluia! Amen! Stand

PRAYER of the DAY

p The Lord be with you. C And also with you.

62

p Let us pray. Glory to you, King, God Almighty. Even though we are sinners, you brought us to a new day and lead us into your holy house. Accept our prayers as you accepted those who are sainted in your kingdom. Despite our defiled lips, we pray that our hearts are pure and our spirits humble, so that our praise may be offered to you not because of fear, but because your Spirit lit the lamp of faith in our souls. Continue to bless us that we will be true to your Word, committed to our faith and honest in teaching and preaching the Gospel. May all our words magnify and glorify your name, Father, + Son, and Holy Spirit. C Amen

FIRST LESSON

Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or comeliness that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? 9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the will of the LORD to bruise him; he has put him to grief; when he makes himself an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand; 11 he shall see the fruit of the travail of his soul and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous; and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. –Isaiah 53:1-12 RSV 53:1 2

After the reading:

C Thanks be to God. PSALM

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom then | shall I fear?* The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I | be afraid?

73

When evildoers came upon me to eat | up my flesh,* it was they, my foes and my adversaries, who stum- | bled and fell. 3 Though an army should en- | camp against me,* yet my heart shall not | be afraid; 4 and though war should rise | up against me,* yet will I put my | trust in him. 5 One thing have I asked of the LORD; one | thing I seek;* that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days | of my life; 6 to behold the fair beauty | of the LORD* and to seek him | in his temple. 7 For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe | in his shelter;* he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling and set me high up- | on a rock. 8 Even now he lifts | up my head* above my enemies | round about me. 9 Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation with sounds | of great gladness;* I will sing and make music | to the LORD. 10 Hearken to my voice, O LORD, | when I call;* have mercy on me and | answer me. 11 You speak in my heart and say, | “Seek my face.”* Your face, LORD, | will I seek. 12 Hide not your | face from me,* nor turn away your servant | in displeasure. 13 You have been my helper; cast me | not away;* do not forsake me, O God of | my salvation. 14 Though my father and my moth- | er forsake me,* the LORD | will sustain me. 15 Show me your | way, O LORD;* lead me on a level path, because | of my enemies. 16 Deliver me not into the hand of my | adversaries,* for false witnesses have risen up against me, and also those | who speak malice. 17 What if I had not believed that I should see the goodness | of the LORD* in the land | of the living! 18 Oh, tarry and await the LORD’s pleasure; be strong, and he shall com- | fort your heart;* wait patiently | for the LORD. –Psalm 27 LBW 2

SECOND LESSON

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a man examine himself, and so eat of 11:23

84

the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are chastened so that we may not be condemned along with the world. –1 Corinthians 11:23-32 RSV

C Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

C Listen, listen, God is calling through the Word, inviting, offering forgiveness, comfort and joy. The Gospel is announced.

GOSPEL

a The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixth chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; 54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever.” –John 6:53-58 RSV 6:53

After the reading:

p The Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. APOSTLES’ CREED

p With the Church on earth and the Church in heaven, we join and confess our faith. C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PEACE

p The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. The ministers and congregation may greet one another with a gesture of peace, using these or similar words:

Peace be with you.

} Peace be with you.

MEAL

p Let us pray: God, our Creator, C You open wide your hand and satisfy the desire of every living creature. We surrender our lives to service in your kingdom. We bless you for your tender nurture and care. Help us to delight in your will and walk in your ways, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen p The Lord be with you. C And also with you.

GREAT THANKSGIVING

p We remember the fathers of the church and the faithful saints whose faith brought us thus far, to celebrate the great gift of life, the body and blood of the Lord. C We praise you, O Lord. p Lift up your hearts, C We lift them to the Lord. p Let us give thanks and praise to God our Father, to Christ our Savior and to the Holy Spirit out Sustainer. C It is right to give him thanks and praise. p Yes, it is our duty to give you our thanks and praise, Lord, King of Israel. For it is you who sent your Son to become human and to die for us so that we might not die but have eternal life. And so, we join our voices with the voices of all the faithful of every time and every age, praising you and saying: C Holy are you, Lord our God. With one voice we celebrate your gift of life to us. And as the people welcomed your Son to Jerusalem as their King, so we welcome him to be the King of our lives and with their words we say: Hosanna in the highest, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. p Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth. In mercy for our fallen world you gave your only Son, that all those who believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. We give thanks to you for the salvation you have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Send now your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we may receive our Lord with a living faith as he comes to us in his holy supper. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. p In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. C Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen

10 6

LORD’S PRAYER

p Let us pray with confidence in the words our Savior gave us: C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Sit

COMMUNION

As the ministers give the bread and cup to each communicant, they say these words:

The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you.

The communicant may say: Amen

Stand

p All those who ate the bread of life and those who drank from the cup of salvation in faith are assured of eternal life. May you be strengthened and kept now unto eternal life. C Amen POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

p Let us pray. You are always mindful of your creation, O Lord, and you keep us close to you. We thank you for the blessing of receiving the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. May we in faith be enriched in love towards all people and service for the glory of your holy name now and unto ages of ages. C Amen p Bless we the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

SENDING BLESSING & DISMISSAL

p The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make his face to shine upon you, the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen p You heard the Word, ate the body and drank the blood; the worship ends and the service begins. Go in peace and serve the Lord. C Thanks be to God!

SERVICE of the WORD

Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

Stand The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. b In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen

b God of faithfulness, we come, young and old, from different places and diverse backgrounds to offer this time of worship to you. Help us to so focus our thoughts on you that we experience afresh your grace, mercy and love as new gifts in our lives. We praise you for blessing us in this way and for revealing your love in Jesus Christ. With his endless love flowing through us and the Holy Spirit guiding us, may our faithfulness also be great and our love for all you created never cease. In Jesus’ name we pray. C Amen b Let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of one another. Kneel/Stand Silence for reflection and self-examination. b Merciful God, C when we think of your great faithfulness and steadfast love, we confess how far we fall short of both. There are times when we judge others by our standards of faithfulness rather than yours. We confess that there are times when we believe that our works of faith earn us salvation. And there are even times when we consider that our faith grows when we only speak words about faith without making that faith evident in and through our lives. We confess also that our busyness can so distract us that we let opportunities to plant even the smallest seeds of faith slip by. Forgive us and increase our faith, O God, so that we can uproot all obstacles which hinder our faithfulness. b And dear God, forgive our indifference towards the plight of those whose lives are impoverished because of situations beyond their control: Liturgy reprinted from Lutheran Book of Worship. C families without the basic necessities of life, increasing numbers of displaced people in the world looking for places of security and peace, Christians who are killed because they put their faith in Jesus the Christ, people denied fullness of life because of chronic illness and those of all ages who are physically or mentally challenged, the unemployed and underemployed, those who are victims of violence or abuse, those who are addicted to drugs of any kind. This we pray in Jesus Christ, your Son our Lord. Amen b Jesus our savior and redeemer, you challenge us to live by your Gospel. Forgive us when we fail to practice with our lives what we proclaim with our lips. C Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Amen b God makes all things new. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old has passed away; everything has become new! My sisters and brothers, if you believe the Gospel, if you trust in the promises of God made through Jesus Christ and if you have truly confessed your sins, I, an ordained servant of his, assure you that in Jesus Christ you are loved, you are blessed, you are forgiven. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen

WORD FIRST LESSON

“And if you obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments which I command you this day, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God. 3 Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your ground, and the fruit of your beasts, the increase of your cattle, and the young of your flock. 5 Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading-trough. 6 Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.” –Deuteronomy 28:1-6 RSV After the reading: l The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 28:1

The heavens bear witness to your won- | ders, O LORD,* and to your faithfulness in the assembly of the | holy ones; 6 for who in the skies can be compared | to the LORD?* Who is like the LORD a- | mong the gods? 7 God is much to be feared in the council of the | holy ones,* great and terrible to all those | round about him. 8 Who is like you, LORD | God of hosts?* O mighty LORD, your faithfulness is | all around you. 9 You rule the raging | of the sea* and still the surging | of its waves. 10 You have crushed Rahab of the deep with a | deadly wound;* you have scattered your enemies with your | mighty arm. 11 Yours are the heavens; the earth al- | so is yours;* you laid the foundations of the world and all | that is in it. 12 You have made the north | and the south;* Tabor and Hermon rejoice | in your name. 5

–Psalm 89:1-12 LBW

SECOND LESSON

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are plain: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissension, party spirit, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. –Galatians 5:16-25 RSV After the reading: l The word of the Lord. SERVICE for HEALING & HOLY COMMUNION Thursday, August 8, 2019 at 6:15 a.m. GATHERING

Stand The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

p In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen p Sisters and brothers: Arise! Arise and lift your hearts! Arise and lift your eyes! Arise and lift your voices! The living God, the moving Spirit of God has called us together in witness, in celebration and in struggle. Let us with praise and thanksgiving reach God and worship the ever living Lord. C We give thanks to you O God, for the marvel of creation that surrounds us. For all the wonders of life you reveal to us. May our lives and our work be reawakened and reformed by the power of your grace. Let us see your glory, your justice and your peace. p You have given us your world and placed the future in your hands. Nourish us, O God, inspire and empower us to make your reign manifest in our day. C Amen p The Lord be with you. C And also with you.

PRAYER of the DAY

p Living God, open our hearts that we may feel the breath of your healing spirit. Unclench our hands, that we may reach out to one another. Open our lips, that we may drink in the delight and wonder of life. Unclog our ears, to hear your agony in our humanity. Open our eyes that we may see Christ in friend and stranger. Breathe your Spirit into us and touch our lives with the life of Jesus Christ, your Son our Lord. C Amen

23 1

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS Kneel/Stand Silence for reflection and self-examination.

p Let us confess our sins: C Lord, I confess that I often have refused the gift of your spirit. Content in our dimness, we shrink from your light. Comfortable in our coolness, we withdraw from your fire. We would be moved, but carefully. We would feel, but mildly. We would see your face, but dimly. Forgive us for begrudging the coming of your Spirit, or for accepting your fire, only to smother it selfishly. Forgive us, and visit us again. We pray, now, in the name of Jesus, not for warm thoughts, but for burning hearts. For there is much that we must see, and much that we must do. Amen. p If you do not do away with the yoke, the clenched fist, the wicked world. If you give bread to the hungry and relief to the oppressed, your light will rise in the darkness and your shadows become like noon. The Lord will always guide you, giving you relief in the desert places and forgive all your sins. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen

WORD FIRST LESSON

For wickedness burns like a fire, it consumes briers and thorns; it kindles the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke. 19 Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts the land is burned, and the people are like fuel for the fire; no man spares his brother. 20 They snatch on the right, but are still hungry, and they devour on the left, but are not satisfied; each devours his neighbor’s flesh, 21 Manas seh E phraim, and E phraim Manas seh, and together they are against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away and his hand is stretched out still. 10:1 Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, 2 to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! 3 What will you do on the day of punishment, in the storm which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth? 4 Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away and his hand is stretched out still. –Isaiah 9:18-10:4 RSV 9:18

After the reading:

l The word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God. PSALM

I will exalt you, O LORD, because you have lift- | ed me up* and have not let my enemies triumph | over me. 2 O LORD my God, I cried | out to you,* and you restored | me to health. 30:1

24 2

You brought me up, O LORD, | from the dead;* you restored my life as I was going down | to the grave. 4 Sing to the LORD, you ser- | vants of his;* give thanks for the remembrance | of his holiness. 5 For his wrath endures but the twinkling | of an eye,* his favor | for a lifetime. 6 Weeping may | spend the night,* but joy comes | in the morning. 7 While I felt secure, I said, “I shall never | be disturbed.* You, LORD, with your favor, made me as strong | as the mountains.” 8 Then you | hid your face,* and I was | filled with fear. 9 I cried to | you, O LORD;* I pleaded with | the Lord, saying, 10 “What profit is there in my blood, if I go down | to the pit?* Will the dust praise you or de- | clare your faithfulness? 11 Hear, O LORD, and have mer- | cy upon me;* O LORD, | be my helper.” 12 You have turned my wailing | into dancing;* you have put off my sackcloth and clothed | me with joy. 13 Therefore my heart sings to you | without ceasing;* O LORD my God, I will give you | thanks forever. 3

–Psalm 30 LBW

SECOND LESSON

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband; 3 and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them; 4 he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.” –Revelation 21:1-4 RSV 21:1

MEAL GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Lord, Holy Father, through Christ our Lord, who for our sake came down and took on our form to free us from the disease and plague of sin. He touched and he healed and now he left for us a memorial that whoever receives his body and blood will be renewed. Therefore with

angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify his holy name, ever more praising you and saying: C Blessed is your name, Jesus. Blessed are you, Jesus. You came to rescue us from sin and the pain of the world. p Our Lord Jesus, in the night in which he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat this is my body which is given for you for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me. Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks and gave it to them to drink saying: Drink of it all of you, this cup is the new covenant in my blood shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. LORD’S PRAYER

p As the Lord taught, we boldly pray: C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Sit

p Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, we rejoice that you desire to make public profession of your faith and be reminded of your responsibility in the life of the church as a disciple of Christ, baptized and redeemed through the blood of the risen Lord. In holy baptism, our Lord Jesus received you and made you members of his family of faith, the church. You have learned from God’s Word his loving purpose for you and for creation. You have been nourished at his holy table and led to be witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, therefore, I ask you to confess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church, the faith in which you were baptized. C I do. p Do you believe in God the Father? C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. p Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. p Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

32 2

p You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in Holy Baptism: to live among God's faithful people, to hear his Word and share in his supper, to proclaim the Good News of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of our Lord Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? C I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. Those making affirmation kneel. A brief silence is kept so that prayer may be made for them.

p Let us pray. Gracious Lord, through water and the Spirit you have made these men and women your own. You forgave them all their sins and brought them to newness of life. Continue to strengthen them with the Holy Spirit, and daily increase in them your gifts of grace: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. C Amen p Father in heaven, for Jesus’ sake, stir up in these your children the gift of the Holy Spirit; confirm their faith, guide their lives, empower them in their service, give them patience in suffering, and bring them to everlasting life. WORD FIRST LESSON

Now as Solomon finished offering all this prayer and supplication to the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, where he had knelt with hands outstretched toward heaven; 55 and he stood, and blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying, 56 “Blessed be the LORD who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised; not one word has failed of all his good promise, which he uttered by Moses his servant. 57 The LORD our God be with us, as he was with our fathers; may he not leave us or forsake us; 58 that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, his statutes, and his ordinances, which he commanded our fathers. 59 Let these words of mine, wherewith I have made supplication before the LORD, be near to the LORD our God day and night, and may he maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel, as each day requires; 60 that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God; there is no other. 61 Let your heart therefore be wholly true to the LORD our God, walking in his statutes and keeping his commandments, as at this day.” –1 Kings 8:54-61 RSV 8:54

After the reading:

l The word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

PSALM

Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel | of the wicked,* nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats | of the scornful! 2 Their delight is in the law | of the LORD,* and they meditate on his law | day and night. 3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that | do not wither;* everything they | do shall prosper. 4 It is not so | with the wicked;* they are like chaff which the wind | blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when | judgment comes,* nor the sinner in the council | of the righteous. 6 For the LORD knows the way | of the righteous,* but the way of the wick- | ed is doomed. 1:1

–Psalm 1 LBW

SECOND LESSON

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For he who has died is freed from sin. 8 But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. 9 For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 The death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. –Romans 6:1-11 RSV 6:1

After the reading:

l The word of the Lord. Stand The Gospel is announced.

C Thanks be to God. GOSPEL

a The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the seventh chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. “Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for this is the law and the prophets. 7:7

34 4

“Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. 18 A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. –Matthew 7:7-19 RSV 13

GREAT THANKSGIVING

p Lift up your hearts and give thanks to God. C Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth, you made us in your image, to love and to be loved. Whenever we have turned away, and our love has failed, your love has remained steadfast. By the suffering, death, and resurrection of your only Son, Jesus Christ, you delivered us from sin and death and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. Amen p Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of your tender love gave your only Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer death for our redemption; who upon the cross made a full, perfect, and sufficient oblation for the sins of the whole world; and commended us in his Holy Gospel to continue a perpetual memory of his precious death until his coming again. C Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Glory be to you, O Lord, most high. Amen p In the night Jesus gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, gave it to his disciples, and said: Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. And so, in remembrance of your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice in union with Christ’s offering for us. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. C Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen LORD’S PRAYER

p Let us pray with confidence in the words our Savior gave us: C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. HOLY COMMUNION with INSTALLATION of a BISHOP Friday, August 9, 2019 at 3:00 p.m.

BRIEF ORDER for CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

Stand The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. b In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen b Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen b If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Kneel/Stand Silence for reflection and self-examination. b Most merciful God, C we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen b Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen

WORD FIRST LESSON

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified. 4 They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. 5 Aliens shall stand and feed your flocks, foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers; 6 but you shall be called the priests of the LORD, men shall speak of you as the ministers of our God; you shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their riches you shall glory. 7 Instead of your shame you shall have a double portion, instead of dishonor you shall rejoice in your lot; therefore in your land you shall possess a double portion; yours shall be everlasting joy. 8 For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. –Isaiah 61:1-8 RSV After the reading: l The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 61:1

PSALM

Be joyful in the LORD, | all you lands;* serve the LORD with gladness and come before his presence | with a song. 2 Know this: The LORD him- | self is God;* he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep | of his pasture. 3 Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his | courts with praise;* give thanks to him and call up- | on his name. 4 For the LORD is good; his mercy is | everlasting;* and his faithfulness endures from | age to age. –Psalm 100 LBW 100:1

SECOND LESSON

Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are competent of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from God, 6 who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not in a written code but in the Spirit; for the written code kills, but the Spirit gives life. 7 Now if the dispensation of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such splendor that the Israelites could not look at Moses’ face because of its brightness, fading as this was, 8 will not the dispensation of the Spirit be attended with greater splendor? 9 For if there was splendor in the dispensation of condemnation, the dispensation of righteousness must far exceed it in splendor. –2 Corinthians 3:4-9 RSV After the reading: l The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 3:4

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL

The Gospel is announced. a The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the seventeenth chapter.

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify thy Son that the Son may glorify thee, 2 since thou hast given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom thou hast given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. 4 I glorified thee on earth, having accomplished the work which thou gavest me to do; 5 and now, Father, glorify thou me in thy own presence with the glory which I had with thee before the world was made. 6 “I have manifested thy name to the men whom thou gavest me out of the world; thine they were, and thou gavest them to me, and they have kept thy word. 7 Now they know that everything that thou hast given me is from thee; 8 for I have given them the words which thou gavest me, and they have received them 17:1

44 6

and know in truth that I came from thee; and they have believed that thou didst send me. 9 I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom thou hast given me, for they are thine. 18 As thou didst send me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth. 20 “I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. –John 17:1-9, 18-21 RSV After the reading: a The Gospel of the Lord.

SERMON

NICENE CREED

C We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20) Hear also the words of the apostles: “Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you guardians, to feed the Church of the Lord which he obtained with his own blood.” (Acts 20:28) “Try hard to show yourself worthy of God’s approval, as a laborer who need not be ashamed; be straightforward in your proclamation of the truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

GREAT THANKSGIVING

50 12

` Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: Endless is your mercy and eternal your reign. You have filled all creation with light and life; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Through Abraham you promised to bless all nations. You rescued Israel, your chosen people. Through the prophets you renewed your promise; and, at this end of all the ages, you sent your Son, who in words and deeds proclaimed your kingdom and was obedient to your will, even to giving his life. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

51 13

C Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. ` Therefore, gracious Father, with this bread and cup we remember the life our Lord offered for us. And, believing the witness of his resurrection, we await his coming in power to share with us the great and promised feast. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. ` Send now, we pray, your Holy Spirit, the spirit of our Lord and of his resurrection, that we who receive the Lord’s body and blood may live to the praise of your glory and receive our inheritance with all your saints in light. C Amen. Come, Holy Spirit. ` Join our prayers with those of your servants of every time and every place, and unite them with the ceaseless petitions of our great high priest until he comes as victorious Lord of all.

LORD’S PRAYER

` Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Sit

INSTALLATION of ELECTED OFFICERS

Sit The bishop-elect announces the names of the individuals and the offices to which they have been elected. The individuals to be installed come forward. ` St. Paul says, “Just as each of our bodies has several parts and each part has a separate function, so all of us, in union with Christ, form one body, and as parts of it we belong to each other. Our gifts differ according the grace given us. If your gift is prophecy, then use it as your faith suggests; if administration, then use it for administration; if teaching, then use it for teaching. Let the preachers deliver sermons, the almsgivers give freely, the officials be diligent, and those who do works of mercy do them cheerfully. (Romans 12:4-8) ` Will you assume the office to which you have been elected, and will you endeavor to discharge its duties faithfully, to the glory of Christ our Lord and in service to his holy Church? } I will, and I ask God to help me. ` And you, people of God, will you support and pray for these individuals in this work? C We will. ` Each office is committed to you in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen ` Let us pray. Gracious Father, you call your people to service and give them varied tasks in the world and in your Church. Grant these officers grace and strength, that they may serve you faithfully to the glory of your name; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen The bishop-elect addresses the newly installed officers: ` The God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in you that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory forever and ever.
