napa valley The Ideal Destination for Grape Cultivation
Growing the Perfect Grape
By: Sarah Recalde
Napa Valley, known for its vineyards and beautiful landscapes, owes its winemaking success to three key factors: geography, climate, and soil. These elements work together to create an ideal environment for grape cultivation, resulting in high-quality wines that have made Napa one of the world's top wine regions.
Geography
Napa Valley spans roughly 30 miles from San Pablo Bay to Mount St. Helena. Surrounding mountains shield the valley from the Pacific Ocean's cool influences. The diverse topography, ranging from sea level to 2,600 feet, creates various microclimates. Vineyard location within this terrain affects sun exposure and grape ripening.
Climate
Napa enjoys a Mediterranean climate, found in only 2% world. Warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters extend the growing season, nurturing slow grape ripening and complex flavors. The marine influence brings cool, moist air from San Pablo Bay, resulting in foggy mornings and optimal temperature fluctuations. This preserves the grape's sugar-acidity balance, crucial for high-quality wines.
Soil
Napa Valley boasts over 100 distinct soils, from volcanic to alluvial. Each soil type's drainage, fertility, and mineral content contribute to unique wine flavors. The valley floor hosts rich, fertile soils ideal for robust red grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon. In contrast, the hillsides and mountains have well-drained, less fertile soils, suited for a wider range of grape varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Chardonnay.

The Essence of Napa Grapes
Napa grapes are globally celebrated for their rich flavors, unique profiles, and unmatched quality. Here we explore a few popular varieties, tasting notes, ideal drinking temperatures, and decanting suggestions.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon pride of Napa Valley. Robust and full-bodied, it showcases flavors of dark berries, cassis, black currant, and hints of oak. Often accompanied by a velvety texture and firm tannins, this wine exhibits depth and complexity.
OPTIMAL DRINKING TEMPERATURE: 60-65°F (15-18°C)
DECANTING TIME: 1-2 hours, allowing the wine to breathe and soften its structure.
Sauvignon Blanc
Known for their vibrant acidity and refreshing nature, Napa Sauvignon Blancs are zesty and invigorating. Flavors of citrus, tropical fruits, grassy notes, and minerality dominate the palate, creating a lively and crisp drinking experience.
OPTIMAL DRINKING TEMPERATURE: 45-50°F (7-10°C)
Merlot
DECANTING TIME: No decanting required, but a brief aeration can enhance the wine's aromatic expression.
Napa Merlots are smooth and approachable. With flavors of ripe plums, red berries, chocolate, and herbal undertones, they delight the palate. These wines are often medium-bodied with supple tannins, striking a perfect balance between fruitiness and structure.
OPTIMAL DRINKING TEMPERATURE: 55-60°F (13-15°C)
DECANTING TIME: 30-60 min. allowing the wine to open up and reveal its complex aromas.
Chardonnay
Always elegant, Napa Chardonnays range from crisp and refreshing to rich and buttery. Common flavors include green apple, citrus, tropical fruits, vanilla, and toasty oak.
OPTIMAL DRINKING TEMPERATURE: 50-55°F (10-13°C)
Zinfandel
DECANTING TIME: Minimal to no decanting required, but swirling the wine in the glass can enhance its aromatic qualities
With their bold, fruit-forward profile, Napa Zinfandel's burst with blackberry, raspberry, spice, and sometimes a touch of pepper. Ranging from medium to full-bodied, these wines exhibit moderate tannins and offer a robust drinking experience.
OPTIMAL DRINKING TEMPERATURE: 60-65°F (15-18°C)
DECANTING TIME: 30-60 min., allowing the wine to soften and its flavors to integrate.

The Art of Wine Tasting
With the multitude of wine varieties available, wine tasting can seem like a daunting task. However, with the right approach, it can be an enjoyable journey of discovery that helps you appreciate the complexity and beauty of wine. Remember, the goal of wine tasting is not just to identify a good wine. It's about exploring your own preferences, understanding the subtleties that differentiate one wine from another, and most importantly, enjoying the rocess. So raise a glass to your new journey into the world of wine tasting. Cheers!
There are several common markers that can be found in both red and white wines. Appreciating these shared attributes allows us to delve deeper into the art and science behind winemaking.
Acidity
Acidity is a fundamental characteristic present in both red and white wines. It contributes to the crispness and freshness of a wine, making it lively on the palate. White wines are generally associated with higher acidity, which provides a zesty and tangy sensation. Red wines, on the other hand, exhibit a more moderate acidity, which helps balance their flavors.
Tannins
Tannins are compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems that give wine its structure and texture. Although red wines are renowned for their tannins, which provide a drying sensation in the mouth, some white wines also possess a subtle amount of tannin. These tannins often come from extended skin contact during the winemaking process or oak aging, adding complexity and a slight grip to the white wine.
3
Fruit Flavors
Both red and white wines can display an array of fruit flavors, offering a delightful sensory experience. White wines often exhibit flavors of citrus fruits, such as lemon, lime, or grapefruit, as well as stone fruits like peach, apricot, and pear. Red wines commonly feature dark fruit flavors like blackberries, cherries, and plums, along with notes of red fruits such as strawberries and raspberries. These fruit characteristics vary depending on grape variety and winemaking techniques.
4
Herbal and Floral Notes
Herbal and floral aromas and flavors can be found in both red and white wines. White wines may showcase herbal notes like freshcut grass, basil, or thyme, while also displaying floral characteristics such as jasmine, elderflower, or honeysuckle. Red wines can offer herbaceous nuances like mint, eucalyptus, or rosemary, accompanied by floral hints like violets or lavender. These herbal and floral elements contribute to the overall aromatic profile of the wines.
Wine Tasting Tips:
Take Notes: Record your impressions of each wine. This can help you remember which ones you liked and why.
Look
Hold the glass by the stem and observe the wine against a white background. The color can tell you a lot about the wine. White wines gain color as they age, while red wines lose their intensity. Look out for clarity and brightness. It's a visual feast before the actual tasting, and it gives you clues about the wine's character and age.
Swirl
Gently swirl your glass, this aerates the wine and releases its aroma. The swirling action helps the wine interact with oxygen, enhancing its natural bouquet. Plus, it's a great way to observe the wine's body: notice how slowly or quickly the wine falls back down the sides of the glass, often referred to as the 'legs' or 'tears' of the wine.
Smell
5
Oak Influence
The use of oak barrels during the aging process is a common practice in winemaking, and it can impact both red and white wines. Oak imparts flavors of vanilla, spice, and toasted notes, adding complexity and depth to the wine. While red wines often spend more time in oak, resulting in more pronounced oak flavors, some white wines also benefit from oak aging, acquiring a creamy texture and flavors like butter, caramel, or coconut.
6
After swirling, place your nose into the glass and take a deep breath. Try to identify the different scents. Wine aromas can range from floral to fruity, from earthy to spicy. This step is crucial because a large part of our taste perception actually comes from our sense of smell.
step 4
Sweetness Levels
Both red and white wines can range in sweetness levels, from bone-dry to dessert-sweet. Dry wines contain minimal residual sugar, providing a clean and crisp taste. Off-dry wines have a touch of sweetness that balances the acidity, while semi-sweet wines have a more noticeable sweetness. Dessert wines, often enjoyed after a meal, can be intensely sweet, with flavors of honey, dried fruits, and syrup.
Taste
Take a small sip and let the wine move around your mouth. Try to identify the balance between sweetness, acidity, tannins, and alcohol. Note the wine's body, or how it feels in your mouth (light, medium, or full-bodied). Consider its flavor intensity and complexity, and the length of the finish, which is the taste that lingers after swallowing.
step 5
Evaluate
Take a moment to reflect on the wine. Did you enjoy it? What flavors stood out to you? Was the wine balanced? This step is about your personal preference and developing your palate. Each wine has its own story and taking the time to understand it can heighten your wine tasting experience.
Cleanse Your Palate: Between tastings, cleanse your palate with water or neutral foods like bread or unsalted crackers.
Temperature Should be Just Right: . Too cold can mask the flavors, while too warm can make the alcohol more pronounced.
Practice Makes Perfect: The more you taste, the better you will get at identifying different types of grapes, regions, and wine-making styles.

Building Community
By: Ethan Wescoatt
On the corner of Fifth and Main nestled against the glittering Napa River lies the Napa River Inn: a historic hotel that maintains cozy vintage luxury in the present day. From shopping center neighbors like Celadon, Sweetie Pies Bakery, and Napa General Store to the rest of town, there is no place that makes the festivities of Downtown Napa more accessible. But the proud two-story structure occupied by the inn and neighboring storefronts has not always been a retail complex. From the tall silo at the building’s center to the weathered brick walls themselves, the Historic Napa Mill carries vestiges from a simpler time when Napa was a humble industrial town.
Before the tourism industry earned the city a ground-up makeover, before the valley’s viticulture became a sensation worldwide, before the word ‘Napa’ was a household name, Napa City was a place eager to establish itself. The Mediterranean climate made farming and viticulture the prime economic staple with gold and quicksilver mining endeavors following close behind. Carving its way through the valley and city center, the Napa River made for easy transportation and allowed shipping ventures to thrive. One such venture belonged to Captain Albert Hatt: a shipman and businessman who supported his family with his steamship and enterprising eye. In January 1882, Hatt famously purchased a riverfront property from William Coombs, son of city-founder Nathan
Coombs, for one dollar. Within two years, the Hatt Building was erected: a two-story warehouse to facilitate Hatt’s growing volume of goods. Beyond just a shipping warehouse, Hatt constructed an indoor skating rink on the building’s second story establishing the building as a place of commerce as well as a social hub. Hatt understood the constant evolution of Napa City, and he saw that his building reflected that. The family business ran smoothly under the leadership of the captain and his son, Albert Jr. until surmounting family tragedies and old age forced Albert Sr. to sell the warehouse in 1912.
Captain Hatt sold the building to the Kieg family, where Robert Edward Kieg bought out his other sibling’s shares and assumed the role of proprietor. Under Kieg’s stewardship, the Napa Milling and Warehouse Company flourished, where it produced and stored farming essentials for numerous allied businesses. For a brief time, the other Kieg siblings ran an egg candling business from the back portion of the mill. In the 1940’s, the family added the iconic silos to the building, radically improving the feed-making process. But like their predecessors, age and waning
interest in the mill led the Kieg family to sell the family business. After a period of uncertainty wherein the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Hatt/Napa Mill Building was acquired by the Napa Mill Development Company in the 1980’s. In June 2000, the Napa River Inn opened its doors, followed swiftly by the A. Hatt Building and Sweetie Pies Bakery in August, The Napa General Store in June 2002, and Celadon in July 2022.
With the future of the historic building secure and the vision of Captain Hatt and the Kieg family realized, the Napa Mill continues to embody the ever-growing nature of the city and stands as a symbol of its versatile community.

A Legacy Reborn
Unveiling the Timeless Charm of Chateau Buena Vista
By: Ethan Wescoatt
From walking the vineyards to feeling the stone in the buildings, it's evident that Napa is a place steeped in rich history, where enterprising individuals left their homes behind and California became the embodiment of a promising future. There is no winery more symbolic to this ideal than the Chateau Buena Vista. Established in 1857, the winery has been crafting premium vintages before the name Napa had become synonymous with wine country.
The story begins in 1840 with the arrival of one Agoston Haraszthy: an eccentric Hungarian viticulture-minded nobleman and the self-proclaimed Count of Buena Vista. Despite the heat of the California Gold Rush, Haraszthy made the pioneer’s pilgrimage in search of the perfect land and environment to grow grapes. This so-called ‘purple gold’ of his happened to be Sonoma, where he planted vineyards and began making wine under the name Buena Vista Winery.
However, in 1869, the tides of fortune took an unfortunate turn. The Count of Buena Vista traveled to Nicaragua where he met an untimely end. Records state that while crossing alligator-infested waters, the supporting branch snapped, and he vanished without a trace never to be seen or heard from again. Back at the winery, a crisis of its own unfolded. A phylloxera epidemic, microscopic insect pests that cause crippling root disease, tore through the vineyards in Sonoma severely hampering production. The Prohibition Era hit California especially hard, halting 90% of all wine production across the state until its repeal in 1933.
Buena Vista’s brutal drought finally ended in 1949, when the
then-owners Frank and Antonia Bartholomew enlisted the expertise of their renowned winemaker friend, André Tchelistcheff. Under Tchelistcheff’s expertise, Buena Vista Winery experienced a well-deserved renaissance, producing award-winning vintages and reclaiming its esteemed position within the wine community. Fast-forward to 2011, when the Buena Vista Winery came under the leadership of Jean-Charles Boisset from the historic wine family, Boisset Family Estates, hailing from Burgundy, France. Boisset shared a deep love and understanding of Haraszthy's original vision. After a year of extensive renovations to the original building, repairs to the Champagne Cellar following
the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and a partnership with winemaker Brian Maloney from sister winery Deloach, Buena Vista celebrated its grand reopening. Boisset envisioned the winery not only as a producer of exceptional wines but also as a vibrant social hub for culture and community. Since 2015, Buena Vista began to host live history reenactments, where actors would come in costume and bring characters like the Count of Buena Vista and his family, the Bear Flag Revolt, and the Double Wedding of the Century to life.
A decade later, Boisset brought the renowned Sonoma winery to Napa with the opening of the Chateau Buena Vista. Located in the Gordon Building on First Street, the new tasting room offers visitors the satin seat of luxury. Relish in Champagne and Caviar, or indulge in Cabernet and Chocolate: handcrafted delicacies from Earth & Sky Chocolates paired to perfection with award-winning reds. Don’t feel like choosing? Opt for the Ultimate Indulgence and experience all Buena Vista has to offer.

Erin Riley formulated the idea of Be Bubbly and opened doors in August of 2020. Riley’s love and passion for “bubbles” is evident when you see Be Bubbly’s 12-page menu; finding the perfect wine is not unrealistic despite the plethora of offerings.
Be Bubbly is known for two of its house pours, a blanc de noir from the Montagne de Rheims and a brut from Côte des Blanc. The wine chiller is stocked with whole bottle purchasing options, each an
adventure from all over the world. Half-bottles and magnums abound. They host live entertainment on special occasions as well. The vibe is fun, chill and informative, all at the same time.

Where Wine and Golf Collide
Chardonnay Golf Club | A Perfect Fusion
By: Peter Posert
If golfing is part of your wine country adventure, a local secret awaits just 8 miles south of town—the Char-donnay Golf Club. As a semi-private club, it graciously extends its doors to the public. Nestled amidst rolling hills and vineyards, this challenging course offers a delightful mix of holes, featuring six par 3's, 4's, and 5's each.
General Manager Bob Becker shares his insights: "In Chardonnay, locals know that scoring well depends on conquering the par 3's. Playing them with finesse leads to success. With ex-pansive greens spanning up to 125 yards wide, precise putting becomes the key on these narrow surrounds."
Situated near San Pablo Bay, the course undergoes seasonal transformations influenced by changing weather patterns. During summer, the wind blows eastward toward Sacramento, while winter brings a westerly breeze from the bay. Consequently, the course feels alive, ever-evolving, and offers a constant challenge.
Surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills, with no houses in sight, the setting provides a reju-venating retreat from work or wine caves. The symphony of chirping avian creatures, including water birds along Fagan Creek and soaring raptors above, harmonizes with the presence of silent land dwellers
like rabbits, foxes, and a hidden bobcat family near hole #16.
According to Becker, the club restaurant at Chardonnay exudes a "Napa-chic" ambiance. "We serve both the classics and exceptional seasonal specials, such as mouthwatering Tri-tip and succulent scallops." The experienced and dedicated staff contribute to the overall excel-lence. Restaurant server Andrea Rodriguez adds her perspective, saying, "I adore the breathtaking view and the opportunity to meet wonderful people."
Becker sums it up by saying, "When players sign up, we warmly say, 'Welcome home.' That's the language of local golf here in Napa Valley."

Breathing new life into Napa’s antiques
By: Peter Posert
Finding durable goods and ever-fashionable attire is not an easy task even when browsing the best department stores the Bay Area has to offer but in downtown Napa there are two stores, Antiques on 2nd and Bombshell Vintage, that feature hard-to-find collectibles, everyday housewares and durable clothes from days gone by.
The two stores are owned by Jennifer Smith, arguably the Contessa of Cool—or at least vintage goods —in Napa. Smith says she believes that inherent in the concept of ‘style’ is an ineffable, longevity factor.
Smith started out running a stall in Antiques on 2nd fifteen years ago, and three years ago made a deal to buy out the owner and run the store herself. Being in Napa, many people come in for wine–related goods, but that is not the biggest seller in local antique stores.
“Bauhaus and mid-century rock. Victorian is down,” Smith says. “Young people are antiquing for better quality and better-for-the-environment reusable reasons.”
Wandering around Antiques on 2nd, you see gorgeous hand-stitched clothing, fountain pens and old waffle makers; you get lost in the bargains. Over here is a cool bowling shirt from 1954. Over there is a set of crystal wine goblets at one-half the price of new. The next vendor’s stall has evening gowns for a night out waltzing to a big band.
Akin to the clothes and wares in her stores, Smith believes in the longevity of Napa City, too. “There is so much room for growth in this town,” she says. “Opening a second store, Bombshell Vintage, a clothing store dedicated to French and English fashions of the past 30 years, has been a dream come true. I just love fashion, all kinds of fashion.”

New trends take hold on 1st Street
By: Elena Seabrook and Paulina Kopache
Downtown Napa’s 1st Street is one of the liveliest areas in the wine country to enjoy unique wines, eat decadent meals, and indulge in the local shopping experience. However, fine wine is not the only treasure this abundant region has to offer. 1st Street is home to a vast expanse of alluring local boutiques, a sample of which we have outlined here in our walking guide of the local area.
KJB
One of our favorite 1st Street boutiques is KJB. It is a small-scale boutique with a moody, elevated ambiance and an incredible selection of quality clothing. Denim brands such as Moussy, AGoldE, Citizens of Humanity, GRLFRND, and Mother
Denim were neatly folded throughout the store, lining the walls, filling up all the display tables, and stacked up toward the ceiling. High-end sweat sets from Aviator Nation were neatly folded on a decorated display table. Graphic t-shirts from vintage inspired brands like Madeworn and Re/Done also caught our attention. This boutique is a must-stop for the hottest trendsetters.
Miah
Wrapping up our boutique journey is Miah. In this neat, well merchandised shop, we found many lovely, quality, basic staples for the young fashionistas of Napa Valley. Neutral colors are one of the trendiest things to wear this fall and winter, and this is the place to shop for it. From comfy lounge pieces to curl up with in the winter, to chic bodysuits and jeans to go out on the town in, this boutique has it all. Moreover, their array of accessories, such as hair clips, wide brim hats, along with gorgeous suede boots and delicate heels are sure to complete the perfect outfit.
Boho Lifestyle
Boho Lifestyle is the definition of California Wine Country couture. This neat, spacious shop carries all the necessary clothing pieces you need in your wardrobe. From neutral pieces and classic jeans to silky tops, and western boots. Considering how cold it can be in the area, the fuzzy sweaters and outerwear caught our eyes immediately. To top off your trendy outfit, they had a beautiful selection of jewelry and accessories.
State and First
Located on a corner block is State and First, a high end men’s and women’s boutique. Our experience browsing the curated racks of fine clothing was magnificent. State and First caters to an elevated and mature demographic. Most of their clothing fits into a sophisticated, high quality category. It appears this boutique was just as ready as we are for the bouts of chilly weather California can get. Soft cashmere sweaters and long sleeve blouses took center stage on their elegant displays. Our eyes darted around the neatly merchandised shop, pausing to admire the cases of glistening name brand jewelry and the nappa leather purses and crossbody bags. Although much of the beautiful products at State and First cost a pretty penny, the quality of each piece is outstanding and unmatched.

The Artistry of Winemaking & Blending
soils, and terroir to explore, every year presents its own challenges," Doran enthused. "Yet, the joy lies in achieving some flavor consistency for the market, which is where winemaking and blending come into play."
Blending with Alison is akin to attending a masterclass in nuanced and balanced winemaking. On one hand, she understands that the less a wine is blended, the more it showcases the distinctive characteristics of the vineyard and vintage. On the other hand, there is a business aspect to consider — meeting the demand for consistent flavors often requires more blending. Napa Valley winemakers must strike a delicate balance, ensuring both uniqueness and consistency in every bottle.
By: Peter Posert
Winemaking is an art of taste. Experience and sensory training inform how every wine is crafted. In Napa Valley, Alison Doran stands as one of the most knowledgeable and respected winemakers, now considered an elder stateswoman in the craft. Her inspiring journey serves as a beacon, particularly for young women contemplating a career in the world of wine.
Alison's immersion in the wine industry began early in her life. During the 1960s, her father acquired the renowned Simi Estate when she was just a child. Roaming through the vineyards, cellars, and labs, she absorbed knowledge about the wine growing seasons and worked alongside her father, cultivating her passion for winemaking. To this day, she possesses a remarkable ability to discern a vine's variety from the fragrance of its blossoms in June, a skill few winemakers can match.
During the late '60s, Alison found guidance from the esteemed Andre
Tchelistcheff, considered the grandfather of America's wine industry, who directed her early career and facilitated her first lab positions in Europe and California, as he did for many others. In the mid-1970s, she became one of the first female graduates of the wine program at UC Davis. Within a few short years, she ascended to the position
of Winemaker in 1981, marking 42 harvests ago. Later, in the early 2000s, she became Levendi Winery's inaugural winery hire in Napa Valley.
"Napa Valley offers an incredible opportunity for site-specific winemaking. With numerous appellations and unique microclimates,
For over two decades, Doran has crafted exquisite wines at Levendi, earning high ratings. While she oversees every aspect of the wine growing process, including cluster counts, harvest dates, and cellar techniques, it is the final blending and finishing stages that ignite her passion the most. She employs a strategy of pinpoint accuracy when blending wines. "At the outset, you must define your vision for a wine. Each wine carries expectations of flavor and intensity, while also reflecting its origin, site, and varietal. Site-specific winemaking is our ultimate goal," Doran stated. Blending, even when incorporating minute percentages of one wine into a base wine, remains one of the enigmatic aspects of winemaking, requiring sensitive training and years of experience. "I only blend when necessary. I allow the vineyard to establish the foundational flavors, and then I create wines that are harmonious," Doran explained. "Yet, when the flavors 'lock in' consistently, it brings an overwhelming sense of joy."
It is the discerning palate and extensive experience of winemakers like Alison Doran that truly elevate the wines they produce, making them a delightful experience for all.
