The Dairy | April 2017

Dear All,

I am delighted to introduce you to our new internal magazine The Dairy, which we will be publishing quarterly. We hope it will be a really interesting read on the ongoing work of the National Dairy Council as well as an overview of the dairy industry in Ireland and around the world. We have had a busy start to the year particularly in the area of leveraging scientific evidence to reinforce the benefits of dairy among two key segments; sports enthusiasts and the

2

over 65s. Our new publications have provided us with strong media opportunities while also establishing new partnership opportunities. Our Health & Wellbeing Evenings have taken us to Bantry and Tralee where working with Drinagh and Lee Strand Coops we have engaged with over 800 attendees looking at physical, mental & nutritional health. In February, we had a meeting with our colleagues at the European Milk Forum in Brussels where we discussed a number of ongoing promotional initiatives across Europe including Milk Moments and the ongoing Cheese Up Your Life Campaign, now in its third year. We also looked a new campaign around butter and had a very productive session around dairy reputation across markets also looking at the areas of climate change and environment and its ongoing impact on the industry. A great deal of our work centres around managing reputation of the dairy industry and our communications team use a tool to monitor commentary and sentiment on a regular basis across traditional and social media. One of the things we have noticed recently is a move towards a more balanced approach around dairy in general with nutritionist and dietitians promoting and advocating the benefits of dairy as part of a healthy balanced diet. We have recently launched our Moo Crew programme for Primary Schools across Ireland. Now in its 5th year, almost a third of all primary schools took part in the programme in 2016, you can read about it more inside. The other exciting campaign we have launched is the Cheese Up Your Life campaign, which is part of an EU-wide programme across four markets and includes a recipe competition and Cheese Symposium taking place in Brussels in June. The most recent big project is HealthFest, a popular event on health and wellbeing

for 3,000 Transition Year students, which was held in the RDS on 26th April. On the Health and Nutrition front, we are delighted to announce a recent partnership with Cappagh Hospital, Ireland’s National Centre for excellence in Orthopaedic to raise awareness and build education around the importance of bone health. We continue to build excellent strategic relationships with our healthcare partners including the INDI, safefood, Food for Health Ireland, the Institute of Sport and Healthy Ireland. Our Nutritionists, Marianne and Caroline continue to work on some excellent research programmes on nutrition across Ireland’s academic institutions including UL, Trinity and UCD. We continue to champion the importance of good sports nutrition and our campaign Powered by Dairy is rooted in promoting the importance of milk and dairy products in sports nutrition, particularly for recovery after exercise. To highlight these beneficial roles, the NDC have developed a number of Powered by Dairy resources about which you can read about more later. It just remains for me to say we hope you enjoy our first issue of The Dairy and we would be delighted to hear your feedback or suggestions on content you would like to see in the next issue.

Kind regards

Moo Crew offers curriculum linked learning supports for teachers such as lesson plans, videos, games, lunchbox tips and activities which are web-based and available at www.moocrew.ie. They can explore the journey ‘from farm to fridge,’ while learning about a healthy, balanced diet underpinned by nutritional expertise.

“We know from its success in previous years that children enjoy getting involved with Moo Crew. It helps us to work with children in an interactive way and to get kids thinking about how exercise fits into their daily lives; which interests me as a sprint hurdler and athlete,”

“Learning about food as a source of nutrition and the ways to consume a healthy, balanced diet to support growth and health – these are really important life skills which help kids to

make smart choices,” - Derval O'Rourke

Moo Crew is designed for implementation in busy classrooms. It also nurtures creativity, team building, literacy and numeracy skills. Milly the cow, the popular Moo Crew mascot, continues to add colour and fun with her exercises, tips and favourite recipes.

INTERESTING FACTS ON CHEESE Fact 1 Archaeological studies have shown the origin of cheese dates as far back as 6,000 BC. Studies also show that during that era cheese was made from cow’s milk and goats in Mesopotamia. Fact 2 There are more than 2,000 varieties of cheese available worldwide, mozzarella is the favourite around the globe, and the most consumed. Fact 3 People of Greece are the largest consumers of cheese worldwide. An average person from Greece consumes around 27.3 kg of cheese every year, about ž of which is feta cheese. Fact 4 Cheese production around the globe is more than the combined worldwide production of coffee, tobacco, tea, and cocoa beans. Fact 5 The first cheese factory was established in Switzerland in 1815, however successful mass production began in 1851 in the United States.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

AUBREY KEE SITE MANAGER AT AURIVO CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LIMITED 1.

How did you get into your job?

After 15 years in the textile industry, with several overseas assignments, I returned to Ireland in 2008 looking for a new industry to apply my experience. At the time Donegal Creameries

18

was expanding into Value Added products and Private Label supply. I joined Donegal Creameries as Operations Manager in April 2008. In 2012 by means of acquisition, I joined Connacht Gold, which was later to become Aurivo. 2.

What are your responsibilities?

Currently as Site Manager, I am responsible for all activities on site associated with delivering milk products to our customers and providing support services to them. This includes purchasing of packaging materials, scheduling milk deliveries into site, overseeing packing and despatch of milk products to customers, along with the related quality and maintenance functions.

3.

What does an average day look like?

First thing , I check in with our Raw Milk people to verify the volumes of milk being delivered. Then I tour the production facility, talking with Production management, Production Planners, machine Operators, Lab and Maintenance staff. Thereafter I could be involved in routine meetings on e.g. Quality, Production efficiency or Health & Safety. I could also be involved in Project-type meetings e.g. Energy-reduction, Capital Planning or NPD.

The Dairy | April 2017

In any week I normally host at least one supplier meeting on site. I also meet customers either at our site or theirs, depending on the nature of the meeting.

4.

What is the best thing about your job?

There is plenty of variety and no two days are the same. I feel I can make a difference in supporting the team in developing the business. We have seen the business grow 300% in volumes over seven years, by making plans and then pulling them through to completion. I get a buzz from adding value by solving problems, through discussion in a team setting, delivering results for customers and the business.

5.

What are the challenges?

The pace of change in the dairy industry means that my day is very different now compared to say five years ago. This is exciting but requires constant learning and re-evaluation of our approach to problems and our resource needs. Naturally, in my role I need to ensure the site is ready for the challenges ahead and communicate to the team.

6.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Regardless of my role, with continued development of the business, I’d like to think I’ll be looking back and remarking how we removed more ‘glass ceilings’ and paradigms from our thinking. I hope I’ll also be reflecting on how I ever survived without the new knowledge and understanding I’ll have then.

7.

What skills do you think you need to succeed in your role?

Communication and relationships are vital in my role. All stakeholders are people first, and as such I need to earn their trust by keeping them informed what’s important and what it means for them. In the FMCG industry, it’s important to be able to co-ordinate many activities and multi-task. Often there’s little time for decision-making, so decisiveness is certainly an advantage. I would say it helps to maintain awareness of my role in delivering customer-satisfaction. I support the team who actually touch the products, deliver the service and add the value for customers and stakeholders.

THE ROLE OF MILK IN SPORT Interesting research is gathering pace on the specific benefits of milk in sport, with potential roles in the areas of recovery nutrition being explored. Effective recovery from an intense exercise session is essential to perform well in the next training session, match or competition. As well as being an affordable, natural, versatile and widely available choice after exercise, milk naturally contains nutrients that can help address the 3 ‘R’s of post-exercise recovery:

1) REFUEL: Milk contains lactose which can help to start the refuelling of carbohydrate stores. 2) REPAIR: Milk provides the high-quality proteins, whey and casein. Protein plays a valuable role in the normal growth and maintenance of muscles. 3) REHYDRATE: Milk is a fluid (naturally composed of about 87 % water) and naturally contains electrolytes such as potassium

21

THE NATIONAL DAIRY COUNCIL SPORTS NUTRITION HANDBOOK Our new Sports Nutrition Handbook - ‘Fuelling Wise for Sport and Exerice’, which is endorsed by the Sport Ireland Institute - covers a wide range of topics including body weight; carbohydrate; protein; fat; recovery nutrition; supplements; and the role of milk as part of Body Composition. NDC NUTRITION NEWS NDC AND FHI PARTNERS IN COMMUNICATING EXCITING DAIRY RESEARCH

Food for Health Ireland (FHI) is a leading innovation team of worldclass science and industry experts that conduct research on novel ingredients from milk, which can offer health benefits to a wide range of consumers. The National Dairy Council partner with FHI to

22

facilitate the communication of their exciting research outputs to health professionals and where relevant, to consumers. The most recent good news story from FHI, which was published in the scientific journal, Nutrition and Diabetes and also featured in the Dairy Reporter, showed that Irish people with higher dairy consumption had a lower BMI, an indicator of body fatness. It also showed favourable associations between dairy intake and other markers of metabolic health such as blood pressure and cholesterol..
