Hiking Trails of Cape Verde
We were delighted to arrange a self-guided trip to Cape Verde for awardwinning travel writer Sarah Baxter. Sarah travelled on a bespoke trip exploring the beautiful island of Santo Antão, and below shares an insight into her off-the-beaten-track adventure.
The trail clung to the bare, ochre cliffs, seemingly defying gravity, while the Atlantic thundered below. Any whales out there – and they were there, so I’d been told – were invisible in the white-capped fizz. I almost couldn’t take it all in: the brutal drama, the deafening roar. Then, rounding a bluff, I saw the village of Fontainhas ahead, its rainbow-hued houses balanced on a ridge so narrow it seemed a gust of wind might topple it into the abyss. It stood as a testament to human perseverance in the face of Mother Nature at her most raw.
This wasn’t the Cape Verde most people know — if they know it at all. Most brochures that feature this remote archipelago off the West African coast highlight the beach-lazing beauty of Boa Vista and Sal. But Santo Antão, Cape Verde’s wildest isle, is something entirely different. It’s a place where the earth feels naked and exposed, as if still recovering from its volcanic birth; a place of towering crags and parched ravines, improbably perched hamlets, and valleys of vibrant green. A landscape of extremes, it’s not an easy place to live. But, as outsiders are beginning to discover, it’s a wonderful place to walk. The trails used by locals for centuries –often the only way to navigate here – make it a hiker’s heaven.
There’s no airport on Santo Antão – there’s barely a scrap of land flat enough. I reached it via a short ferry hop from neighbouring São Vicente and, not long after disembarking, was trekking up the Ribeira do Paúl. This striking valley is Santo Antão at its lushest.
Its jagged sides are cut with terraces; sugarcane and banana palms swayed in the breeze, and farmers, bent double, worked fields of spring onions and manioc. Climbing further, I reached a few houses on a ridge, where the enterprising Alcinda Fonseca has set up a café. As I sipped a cup of her freshly brewed coffee, she pointed to the bushes where the beans had grown. It was like drinking the essence of the island itself: strong, earthy, unyielding.
There’s no way to get to Alcinda’s other than on foot, as is the way with much of Santo Antão. It was only by hiking that, over the course of a week, I discovered the abandoned village of Aranhas, its stone houses crumbling toward the sea. It’s how I stumbled upon a man feeding sugarcane into his trapiche, the machine extracting juice to make potent local grogue. And it’s how, after hair-pinning up the mighty rock face of the Ribeira das Patas, I met Juan Bautista, who ekes out a living growing corn atop the otherworldly plateau. The views from here, across the dry, snaking riverbeds and up to the island’s highest peaks, were magnificent. Juan’s story of survival – which I gleaned through a mix of sign language and guesswork, as he spoke no English – was even more moving.
Santo Antão is not like anywhere else. Hiking here isn’t just about breathtaking scenery. It’s about connecting with a place that feels elemental, where every step seems to take you closer to the edge of the world.
"What a wonderful surprise – the walking and scenery exceeded expectations, I loved the mix of natural drama and human interest."
Sarah travelled to Cape Verde in March 2024

Discover the Ancient Greek Islands
Walks Sales Consultant Aleksandra Godawa-Hodge shares her highlights of exploring the Greek Islands Santorini and Naxos, discovering unrivalled scenery across dramatic coastlines and the fascinating history of ancient Greece along the way.
In ancient Greece, the olive tree symbolised Athena's victory over Poseidon, connecting walkers to the country's rich mythology to this day. In the Cyclades, the timeless competition between sea and mountains remains, offering scenery as dramatic as the legends that shaped it. Exploring Santorini and Naxos, I encountered these breathtaking landscapes that came alive with Mediterranean flavours, and the fascinating olive oil heritage that defines these islands.
Walking in the Cyclades felt like stepping into a myth. In Santorini, I discovered the narrow streets of whitewashed villages perched on volcanic cliffs, their vibrant blue domes blending seamlessly with the sea and sky. Pausing at a cliffside café in Fira, I savoured crispy tomatokeftedes, Santorini’s famous tomato fritters, and a glass of indigenous Assyrtiko wine, the perfect end to a hike with views that seemed to stretch into eternity. With clearly marked paths and thoughtfully preserved ancient routes, the network is perfect for walkers of all levels.
Naxos was equally captivating but offered a slower, more rural charm. I wandered cobblestone lanes through villages where time seemed to stand still, discovering ancient ruins and a hilltop castle overlooking the sparkling Aegean. The most challenging hike was to the summit of Mount Zas, the mythical birthplace of the ruler of all the gods, Zeus. This trek to the highest peak of the Cyclades
rewards every effort with breathtaking panoramas. Proud locals claim that the jewel of the island remains the Temple of Apollo in the capital.
Exploring Greece’s islands is an experience unlike any other. Whether tracing trails on Corfu’s dramatic coastline or marvelling at Crete’s rugged gorges, each hike reveals stunning scenery and a glimpse into Greece’s rich history. Walking here isn’t just about the landscapes; it’s about being part of a story thousands of years old, where nature and myth intertwine.

Hiking through History in Peru
Walks Sales Consultant Rhiannon Lewis recently travelled to the land of the legendary Incas, Peru, to discover the beautiful Andean landscapes, visit preserved archaeological sites steeped in history, and experience the vibrant heritage and traditions of the local people.
When considering different types of holidays, cultural, gastronomic, historical, adventure, nature, and city breaks often come to mind. What makes hiking holidays magical is their ability to effortlessly combine several of these elements into one enriching experience. My recent journey to Peru was a hiking holiday infused with culture, history and nature.
Beginning in Huaraz, I set out to explore the old Inca Road, a remarkable pathway winding through Andean mountain landscapes, lush valleys, and serene rivers. Known as the Qhapaq Ñan, this mid-15th-century road network was a vital pathway of the Inca Empire, connecting its vast territories. Walking the less-discovered sections of the Inca Road, far from the well-known trails near Machu Picchu, gave me a deep sense of connection to the surrounding unspoiled nature. It felt as if I was seeing the landscapes much like the Incas did centuries ago.
Along the trail, I hiked stone-paved sections of the road leading to archaeological sites of former farming terraces, ceremonial sites, settlement ruins and checkpoints. Each site held its own story and historic significance not just for the Incas but also for the Quechua people who now call the land home. Our guide shared tales of the road’s historic importance and its role in modern culture.
Beyond the history and culture, I was completely immersed in the high Andean landscapes. I crossed clear rivers on stepping stones, ascended rugged valleys to panoramic views, and descended into green river gorges. Passing through traditional farmlands, I observed wild llamas and alpacas grazing freely and at night the sky filled with
stars, making it clear how those of the past could navigate so easily by the stars alone. Each new landscape revealed the diverse beauty of the Andes.
This holiday offered far more than a hike, it was an educational, cultural, and nature-filled adventure. Walking in the footsteps of the Incas, I gained insight into their heritage and the vibrant traditions of modern Peru while enjoying awe-inspiring scenery.
At Walks Worldwide, we have hiking holidays to suit all, from groupguided to private-guided treks, where the key element and joy of hiking is enhanced by discovering culture, history, and nature.

Off The Beaten Track
Walks Worldwide Manager Alistair Grice provides an insight into the benefits of journeying across seldom explored routes around the world. Here he highlights some of our favourite destinations offering unique perspectives and exciting opportunities for those looking for adventure.
Whilst it’s true that the path well-trodden will deliver great views and trails, getting off the beaten track opens the door to a world of excitement and discovery, with the lure of the unknown bringing a certain magic to what you come to discover. Perhaps a spectacular view only few have laid eyes on, or an exciting path that exposes a rare species or an extraordinary landform, remaining a well-kept secret.
Exploring lesser-known parts of the world exposes you to intriguing landscapes and regions that few people are familiar with. On the Berber trail, stray from busy Marrakech and experience a variety of colour and vegetation as you traverse a series of fascinating passes across the High Atlas Mountains, admiring dramatic panoramas along the way. Visit timeless mountain villages, where you're greeted with friendly hospitality and mouthwatering Moroccan cuisine.
The Himalayas are another unique area of the world to trek, where diverse landscapes are fused with a rich tapestry of culture and tradition. Whilst these majestic mountains can be challenging, the experience is said to be transformative, immersing you in a world of natural magnificence and new perspectives. Our trip takes you across the iconic Singalila Ridge, the natural border between Nepal and India offering some of the most rewarding scenery of any trek.
The breathtaking country of Jordan is another stunning part of the world that's less commonly explored, again offering much more than stunning views and unique landscapes, with its remarkable archaeological sites providing an experience like no other. Hike through the picturesque Wadi Rum desert, and traverse the Dana
to Petra trail stopping along the way to admire impressive architecture, ancient buildings, and learn about the history of this extraordinary country.
Whilst Sweden is perhaps a more familiar destination, our trip across the Sörmlandsleden hiking trail showcases some of the most diverse and picturesque vistas in Europe, with views of serene forests, beautiful lakes and quaint, historical villages.
Another unique and exciting trip is soon to be launched in Colombia, where colonial architecture, breathtaking mountain panoramas and traditional villages are amongst the wonderful experiences to be had.

Client Reviews
As a team of travel experts, helping avid walkers have amazing holidays is at the heart of everything we do. Over the past year, we’ve sent fellow hiking enthusiasts all around the world, from breath-taking summits in Tenerife to the beautiful seaside towns of Italy. Here are some reviews from our clients’ recent trips.
"The walks were really enjoyable and well-planned, and the hotels were high quality and in excellent locations close to amenities. The views from the top of Mount Teide were amazing and we enjoyed walking around the volcanic rocks including the famous "Roque Cinchad" at the base of Mount Teide. As experienced hikers this was a great challenge."
Lisa B, Trails of Tenerife & La Gomera, March 2024
"This trip was just as described but better, packed with walking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, skidooing, and dog sledding - all brilliant and exciting. There was excellent food, great facilities and we had a fabulous cabin that was so comfortable and just what we wanted. Our local guide Anton was great, and just right for the group. He was knowledgeable, upbeat, relaxed and yet on point to make sure we got through the itinerary. Excellent all round."
Claire F, Call of the Wild, Finland, March 2024
"We enjoyed booking free days to explore the locations and go for nature walks, and loved that it's like a treasure huntlooking for the next marker whilst having the reassurance of Komoot if we were unsure! The best day was the hike up to Panocratior, up into the clouds, which felt like a different world with just us and the birds. Marcella, the guide, was fantastic, and so helpful with excellent knowledge about the trail and advice on where we might see birds."
Susan R, The Corfu Trail, May 2024
"Liguria is a beautiful region with a wealth of graded walking routes. We were very pleased to be staying in Sestri Levante which is a beautiful seaside town with very few tourists & loads of great restaurants and cafes. The number of well-marked hiking paths meant we could explore routes away from the busy Cinque Terre town. Rhiannon was very knowledgeable and easy to communicate with."
Caroline S, Walking the Ligurian Riviera, Italy, May 2024
"The hikes in and around the Pindos Mountains of Greece were amazing. Yiannis was a terrific guide, with a depth of experience in these mountains. The holiday had a good pace, and long days interspersed with short days. There were too many (highlights) to recount; every day was a new adventure. Truly an unforgettable trip!"
James S, Hiking in the Pindos Mountains, Greece, June 2024
