Meet the Walks Expert Trip Planner for 2022 14/15
We are delighted to introduce Emma Bennett, who has a wealth of precious knowledge and valuable experience. In this issue we put our questions to Emma to find out more about her adventures.
What is your ultimate walking experience?
The first time I summited a mountain as part of a tour, I found the camaraderie in the group really special, and I loved being part of a group that all helped each other through a steep climb.
What is the best piece of advice you give to your clients?
Always wear your walking boots on the flight so there is no chance of losing them! You can usually replace any of your kit, but your trusty well-worn in walking boots are invaluable!
Which walking destination do you think will top the hot list in 2022?
I think our more off-the-beaten-track trips in Europe will be very popular. Montenegro on Foot and our Peaks of the Balkans trips offer the chance to do this, allowing you to enjoy some sunshine, all without travelling too far from home.
Where would you recommend for something a bit out of the ordinary?
Kyrgyzstan! If you have not already looked into walking in the Tien Shan mountains you really should. Affectionately nicknamed ‘the alps of Central Asia’ the scenery in Kyrgyzstan is mesmerising with rolling alpine meadows and snow-capped jagged peaks. It is completely unexpected and a real treat for anyone who enjoys going off the typical tourist trail.
Which are the top destinations on your wish-list?
Puglia in Italy, I love combining my walking with great food and culture. I have heard such great things about the Puglia region - I cannot wait to visit!
What destination has been most memorable in terms of food, whilst travelling overseas?
Eating locally and within smaller communities is a great way of enriching your trip and helps you learn more about the people you meet along the way. Spending time in Gers in Mongolia and making and then eating my own noodles in Kyrgyzstan are high up my list of special food memories.
Where in the world is your favourite walking location?
Nepal. Every time I go back, I discover something new and it is always, absolutely stunning. The people are so friendly, you cannot help but be inspired by the generations of Sherpas and the stories of their climbs.
Where do you recommend visiting for the best selfguided experience?
For me it must be Italy or Greece! Being able to linger over long lunches and beach swims in the evening. I love the flexibility of a self-guided trip, being able to set your own times to include whatever you enjoy on holiday is wonderful.
Where would you recommend for a more challenging walk?
This might come as a surprise, but our Hiking in the Pindos Mountains trip in Greece. It will get you to places seldom visited and into some unique scenery as well as visiting three of the country’s highest mountains.
Although much of your week is spent arranging holidays what do you do in your spare time?
I am a qualified mountain leader so I am often out in the summer volunteering with charity challenge groups taking on some of our most beautiful mountains and marathon-length hikes through our cities. It is a great tonic to being at my desk in the week!
We offer plenty of options for year round walking. Have a look at the handy planner below to work out where to go, and when, for your 2022 walking adventures.
