EIGHTH ANNUAL LAKE NONA IMPACT FORUM E X P L O R E S I N N O VAT I V E H E A L T H C A R E S O L U T I O N S
“The Lake Nona Impact Forum is a sensory experience,” said Lake Nona Institute Executive Director Gloria Caulfield. Each year, the Lake Nona Institute Impact Forum brings renowned thought leaders and fresh ideas from across the health care industry to Central Florida. From mental health and performance to the impact of smart technology, this year’s Impact Forum featured incredible conversations around health and innovation. Seattle Seahawks Quarterback and co-founder of Limitless Minds, Russell Wilson, was joined by his brother and business partner Harry Wilson and Lake Nona resident Charles Woodson to talk about mental wellbeing and its impact on success both on and off the field.“You don’t need to be sick to get better,” said Russell Wilson. “If you want to be great, your lifestyle can’t be random. You need to have a plan.” Making mental health a priority was explored at other panels throughout the Impact Forum including one with actress Brooke Shields and AdventHealth President and CEO Daryl Tol.
“The way we go through school, everything is important besides how we feel. We always have to worry about passing a test or finishing a project or homework. I don’t think we take enough time in school to say how’s your day or how are you feeling,” said Urban Yogi Jaytaun McMillan. “We usually teach older kids. With young kids, you always expect high energy, but for these kids to sit down and focus and participate in the meditation and relaxation – that was quite impressive.” Back at the Impact Forum, other panels took a closer look at the importance and economic impact of children’s health. “Adverse childhood experiences have a long-lasting impact on health,” said American Medical Association President Patrice Harris, MD whose work in Chicago is helping to address childhood trauma, poverty, housing and more. She was joined by Nemours Children’s Hospital CEO R. Lawrence Moss, Vassar College President Elizabeth Bradley, and Market President for AmeriHealth Karen Dale in a discussion about medical care for children and how that impacts America’s economic future.
“Maybe there’s strength in asking for help. Maybe there’s strength in admitting,” said actress, model and author, Brooke Shields in a discussion about recognizing and overcoming her own postpartum depression. “The healthier I became, the better I was at career, and the better mom, wife and friend I was.”
During the Impact Forum, Dr. Moss released “How Children Can Transform the Economy… And Health Care,” the first in a series of white papers about the direct connection between healthy children and long-term U.S. economic growth and security. Visit nemours.mediaroom.com if you’d like to read a copy of the white paper.
Throughout the three-day event, New York-based Urban Yogis kept guests active with morning yoga, meditation, and stretch breaks. In their home state, the Urban Yogis help introduce the transformative tools of yoga and meditation to at-risk youth. While in Lake Nona, they made time to visit NorthLake Park Community School where they taught yoga to first and second graders during their P.E. classes.
Other timely panels focused on health care policy, nutrition, the healing power of the arts, innovation in wellbeing, and addressing the coronavirus. To watch the collection of panels from the event, visit the Lake Nona Institute’s Facebook page at www.facebook. com/lakenonainstitute.

THE HEART O F
A SOLDIER
By Andrea N. Madrazo | Wednesday, February 26, 2020
Diagnosed with death to losing over 100 pounds in the midst of receiving a heart transplant, if Norris McMiller, U.S. Army Veteran, does not inspire you to live a healthy life, nothing else can! Once taking 1,100+ pills a year, to now what he says feeling “free and clear,” he took gut- wrenching news and turned it into a change for the better.
how soon or how I would react when it was right on my doorstep.” Thankfully for him, a fellow U.S. Army Veteran served twice- to his country and to Mr. McMiller by giving him a second chance at life- His heart. Taking his health back, he set out on a journey alongside his wife, Patty McMiller, to ensure he did everything in his power to not let the diagnosis of death creep back.
The unfathomable happened when Mr. McMiller was told death was soon to come for him due to his enlarged heart. He says, “When I was given the diagnosis of death, I knew it was going to happen, but I didn’t know
A decrease in seven sizes and with a priceless smile to match, he has found how to not only lose weight, but how to maintain a healthy weight. It is not a diet to the McMillers, it is a lifestyle.
When asked what his first step was, he responded, “You have to find what is going to fit you and why you gained weight. I did not want to sacrifice my hunger, I wanted to eat. I knew there was a way, I just had to find it. There is a way you can eat and still not gain weight. For me that is counting my carb intake.”
His secret is to only eat 100-150 carbs a day, on top of portion control, hydration and being creative with foods. His method makes it almost impossible to make an excuse.
Aside from watching what they ingest, the duo chooses to walk daily as a form of exercise and to step away and reflect. The walks help to keep their energy levels up and their bond stronger.
He says, “Making excuses is easy, once you stop making excuses, it is so simple to be healthy and make a change. That change does not take place until you put it into action. It is not rocket science!”
All of these tools together, and with the help of a heart transplant, Mr. McMiller can see his grandchildren grow up, achieve what he was told he wouldn’t be given the chance to and live his life the way he wants to.
While keeping in mind, “The expectation is not to be a ‘Gym Rat’, it is to be active,” he says. Since the weight loss journey, Ms. Miller had a front row seat in watching her husband transform and also has joined his change for the better. She says, “He really wants to go out and do things now. I definitely feel better too.”
With the widest grin, Mr. McMiller proudly says, “I am the guy who survived death.”
