Meet the

BARNES & GEHRING FAMILIES

he beautiful, tree-lined streets of Live Oak Estates haven’t existed for long, but the Gehring family have called it home since the neighborhood began 23 years ago. When they first moved there were nothing but cows nearby. The nearest grocery store was 30 minutes away and they had to drive to Hunter’s Creek to do any shopping. Since then, the community has grown substantially and the Gehring’s have become an important part of it. Amy is a fourthgrade teacher at North Lake Park Elementary and Jim runs a business, Village Originals, selling minerals, gems, and other types of stones. In fact, Jim’s business is what brought them to the area. He originally had a shop in the Church Street Exchange. As for Amy, she says that she really enjoys seeing her students grow and learn at a special time in their lives. “They’re at a great age where they can appreciate your humor and sarcasm and they still love you.” She helped start the PTA program at the school when her children attended, and now she’s back as a teacher herself. What they enjoy the most about Live Oak Estates is the laid-back feel of the community along with neighbors that have become

extended family. Amy and Jim are originally from Ohio, and the trees that line the streets give them the feel of home, minus the winter weather. Amy still has family there, but they enjoy making the trip to see her in Central Florida. Plus, with their hectic schedules, it’s harder for the Gehring’s to make it to Ohio. Their youngest daughter, Nina, 13, is a high-level gymnast who has been training since the age of four. These days most weekends are spent traveling to competitions around the state and around the country. Nina says that she hopes to compete at the collegiate level one day. Their other three children are very busy as well. Sam, 18, will start school at Valencia in the fall. Nicholas, 23, is an FSU graduate who’s now involved in the family business, and their eldest son is a fighter pilot for the Air Force. In fact, he and his wife Lexi just informed Amy and Jim that they’ll be grandparents soon! “Our family is growing quite a bit,” says Amy, “and we’re excited about it.” He and Lexi will be moving overseas soon as part of his service, but the Gehring’s see it as a great opportunity to travel to new parts of the world. The tight-knit community has led Jim and Amy to call this their forever home, they say that

they are proud to live here and live amongst so many wonderful people. The Barnes family also enjoy the relaxed vibe of Live Oak Estates. Erik and Kerri have lived in the community for 11 years. They love the acre lots and the space provided in the community. Erik says that he loves seeing the wildlife that make their way through. “Every morning I can see deer, rabbits, raccoons and other animals,” says Erik, “it’s really cool to be able to enjoy that so often.” He also enjoys being able to see the stars so clearly at night thanks to the lack of light pollution. The Barnes family says that it is this combination of being so close to the city but feeling like they are in the wilderness that makes this area unique. The family also loves the fact that there is so much for their kids to do nearby. They have three daughters, Avery, Ansley and Addisyn, who are involved in a multitude of activities. Avery will be starting high school at Bishop Moore in the fall. She was also one of a handful of students chosen to perform in a competitive cheer squad. Ansley will be starting middle school and trying out for the soccer

For the last year he’s coached Addisyn and Ansley’s soccer team. “I absolutely love coaching,” says Erik, “so I get to further my passion for coaching and helping young athletes and see my daughters have fun.” Erik helped coach the Lake Nona Junior Lions football team before recently making the switch to soccer for his girls. He says that it has been a learning experience since Erik did not grow up playing soccer. However, he has used his background as an athlete along with lessons that translate across many sports like spacing and getting into an athletic position to help make his transition seamless. One of the best parts of coaching for Erik was seeing Addisyn’s team win the championship at the YMCA last year. He says that seeing the team

What is your favorite part about living in your neighborhood? Our absolute favorite part about living here is how quaint, peaceful and private our neighborhood is.

Jeffrey: I came here with my family from California to start up a family car repair business which I managed successfully for fifteen years.

Nicole: We have some pretty awesome neighbors too our favs being my parents and my grandmother.

Favorite Local Hangout? We are loving all the new places in Lake Nona. Chili’s is our #1 and the kiddos love it too!

Current: St. Cloud, Fl.

Favorite family activities? We enjoy spending time together with both of our families so close by; we love going to the beach, traveling, going to theme parks, having family game night, flag football nights for the boys and of course worshipping at our church. Springs, lakes or oceans? OCEANSSSS! We are fortunate living in Central Florida and enjoy the quick road trips to many different beautiful beaches with our family. The beach is definitely our happy place. Only in Central Florida moment? Trying to drive somewhere without getting on a highway! If you could change one thing about Central Florida what would it be? What are you most proud of? Nicole: My baby boys (7 & 9 1/2 yrs) that we absolutely adore! I’m such a proud wife, mom and business owner! I truly believe in doing what you love and loving what you do! Jeffrey: I am most proud of my family. We have a loving marriage and two amazing boys! I am so proud of the life we have built together. With all of it’s growth, what are you most excited about coming to Central Florida? We are excited for all the healthy and new choices to eat and shop at that are so close to home! Dog person, cat person, or other? We would love to get the boys a dog in the near future. n
