EDITOR’S NOTE Hi

there, neighbors. On behalf of the whole team at Central Florida Monthly, we’d like to extend a warm welcome to you.

is our roots. (Cue Barbara Mandrell) We were Narcoossee before Narcoossee was cool, y’all. And CFM exists because of our desire to build relationships that matter.

Over the past 12 years, you’ve known us as a newspaper, The Narcoossee Navigator, and now as a magazine, Central Florida Monthly. During that time, you’ve watched us slowly evolve—witnessing our bumps and bruises, in addition to our more graceful moments. And we deeply appreciate your patience and support as we’ve grown.

Our mission is to make you feel at home in the East Orlando, Kissimmee and St. Cloud area by helping you build meaningful personal and professional relationships. And we’ll continue doing that by providing the information, resources and connections you need to live, work and play here. But going forward, we’ll do it on a larger (and more visible) scale through print, digital, social and events—not just our one-on-one interactions.

But there are some important things we’ve never formally shared with you, or said often enough, and we’d like to share them with you now. We deeply love our community—the only thing deeper than our love of this community

In this issue, we’re focusing on matters of the heart. Head to page eight and find out why you’ll be seeing, wearing and drinking RED this month. On page 22, get your daily dose of community love: see who got the nod at our

Best of 2016 awards party—we’ve got the full list of nominees and winners, plus some snaps from the party at Lakehouse in Lake Nona. And if you’re not a social media type—but aspire to deepen your relationships—you’ll want to read our story about breaking the code of human connection on page 18. It’s easier (and more fun) than you may think. And finally, take a look at page 20 for information about our “Home is Where the Heart Is” contest.

heart SMARTS In a month that’s all about matters of the heart, you’ll be seeing, wearing and even drinking red. We’ve got the, um, vital details below, including hashtags we’ll use so you can keep up with the latest on social media. AMERICAN HEART MONTH An estimated 85.6 million people in the U.S. are living with cardiovascular diseases, including heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and chest pain—you don’t have to be one of them. In February, area hospitals will host a variety of free events to help get your finger on the pulse of heart disease. And all month long, we’ll be sharing these events on our social media accounts using the hashtag #cfmhasheart. NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY, FEB 5 Did you know heart disease is the number one killer of women? Sadly, one in three women dies of heart disease and stroke each year. And that’s why National Wear Red Day is held on the first Friday in February: to raise awareness about this disease and women’s heart health. #GoRedWearRed THE SOCIAL AT ABC FINE WINE & SPIRITS, FEB 8 Whether you prefer tall, dark and handsome; smooth and sexy, great legs or good body, you’ll find your match at our February wine tasting event. Sample over 50 wines, beers and spirits; nosh on small bites provided by local restaurants, mix and mingle with fellow wine lovers, and take home a keepsake glass—only $5 with a CFM wristband. What’s not to love? RSVP on our Facebook page to get yours. #cfmsocial #winewednesday NATIONAL DRINK WINE DAY, FEB 18 The whole point of National Drink Wine Day is to share the love and health benefits of wine. Wine plays an important role in our lives. Seriously! Positive benefits of moderate consumption include reduced risk of heart disease and enhancement of food, relationships and life. #nationaldrinkwineday n

Human connection lies at the heart of human well-being. It’s up to all of us—doctors, patients, neighborhoods and communities—to maintain bonds where they’re fading, and create ones where they haven’t existed. Dhruv Khullar, NYT

A

re you more concerned about the image you project than being yourself on social media? If you’re like us, you’re probably more focused on your popularity (likes, follows) than the quality of your relationships. But at the end of the day, relationships are what we all really want. And all the selfie sticks and good lighting in the world won’t help start, maintain or deepen a relationship. So, what does it take to have the relationships we want? We don’t usually take advice from large-scale visual-art installations, but The Code Wall in Lake Nona offers three sound suggestions to

build quality relationships: inspire, connect and participate.

INSPIRE: Encourage Each Other It doesn’t matter how smart, talented or pretty you are. As a human, we all have moments when we don’t feel good enough. This is why inspiration is so powerful. A kind word, beautiful image or even a simple thumbs up on Facebook can give us the encouragement we need to turn “No, I can’t” into “Yes, I can.” And here’s the neat thing about inspiration: it always comes from others; it’s a gift that’s mysterious, unexpected and uplifting. And we all have the power to inspire others.

CONNECT: Be Yourself

We need each other. According to noted author and research professor Brene Brown: “A deep sense of love and belonging is an irresistible need of all people. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong. When those needs are not met, we don’t function as we were meant to. We break. We fall apart. We numb. We ache. We hurt others. We get sick.” The best thing we can do to connect with others is be vulnerable, and that means being ourselves. When we put ourselves out there, we risk rejection and being hurt. And by opening up to others, we open the door for them to do the same with us.

PARTICIPATE: Engage With Your Friends and Followers

Just like any other living thing, relationships need to be nurtured in order to grow. And your social relationships are not exempt from

this rule. You have to engage with your friends and followers on social media—just like in real life. Or IRL as the kids say. According to Dhruv Khullar, M.D., “Human connection lies at the heart of human wellbeing. It’s up to all of us—doctors, patients, neighborhoods and communities—to maintain bonds where they’re fading, and create ones where they haven’t existed.” In order to break the code of human connection on social media, we need to encourage each other, be ourselves and nurture our relationships. We look forward to connecting with you on social media and IRL at our monthly networking event, The Social. Are you ready to get social, neighbors? n

STONE CARE

Traditional

CONTEST: WHAT DOES HOME MEAN TO YOU? Whether it’s the structure you live in, the people you share it with or the place you dwell (East Orlando, Kissimmee, St. Cloud—Holla!), there’s no other place like it. Home is where your story begins. And we’d like for you to tell your story with a photo or story on Instagram, a 140-character (or less) tweet on Twitter or a post on Facebook. Photos and videos are encouraged. This isn’t about slick production. It’s a call for authentic expression of what gives you goosies when you think of the word home. Show us the people, places and things that make you feel at home—where your heart is.

This contest is open to all of our readers and is proudly sponsored by Fusilier Realty Group. For more details about the contest, rules and prizes, please visit cfmonthly.com. n
