EDITOR’S NOTE

Hi

there, neighbors. Do you remember what it was like to move into your current house or apartment?

No matter if it’s new construction, a fixer upper or something in between, moving into new digs is exciting because you get to transform raw physical space into the home of your dreams. Today, as I put finishing touches on the March issue of Central Florida Monthly, I couldn’t help but think how this magazine is like a new house—full of possibilities. But it will never truly feel like home without your input. Because this magazine isn’t just mine (and the CFM team’s!)—it’s ours. I envision Central Florida Monthly becoming your literary home—in print, online and on social media. A place where you feel comfortable and where you belong. Because you should. A place where your story matters. Because it does. A place where we share information and ideas about our community and work together to make it everyone’s dream home. Because it can. And that’s why, in this issue, we’re kicking off CFM’s I Live Here project: Because we believe everyone has a story that’s worth telling. And we want to make it easy for you to share your story and read your neighbors’. On pages eight and nine, you’ll find our first I Live Here profile of Randal Lakes residents Christine Hartmann and Elvis Burrows, and their fur baby Bowser Burrows. So adorable. If you’d like to participate in CFM’s I Live Here Project. There are three simple rules. You must:

we’ll schedule your photo shoot and put you in the queue for publication. And, of course, we’ll give you the heads up when we publish your Q&A online. Because #InternetFamous. On pages 16 and 17, you’ll find our first installment of a new monthly news roundup called ICYMI (In Case You Missed It). We believe everyone should have access to information about our community. And because so much happens so fast in these parts, we feel a monthly recap will help keep everyone in the loop. We’ll cover things like new development, retail, restaurants and community wellness initiatives. But we’ll try to break it down in a less newsy (and more fun!) way. Because press releases are b-o-r-i-n-g.

If you’re more of a breaking-news type, connect with us on social media where we curate news from other outlets and even break a story of our own every now and again. And if you’ve got scoop, please share it. And finally, I want to give you the heads up about something we’re launching in our April issue: in-depth neighborhood profiles. The first article will be Living in Lake Nona and we’ll feature a new spot every month. You probably realize I’m not telling you about the upcoming feature without an ulterior motive. Because, at this point, we’ve got a little history and you know that’s how I roll. <wink wink nudge nudge>

Having worked in the cosmetic industry from a representative to becoming the vice president of finance for a nonprofit organization, it proves there is nothing too big or too small that she can’t handle. “Running my own agency helps me utilize my many skills attained over the years,” Quevedo stated, which is why she continues to have a proliferate business in the Orlando area since 2014. She has been able to successfully use her passions for finance and sales to run a blooming business, develop her team and build the relationships with her customers in the community. Her parents, who emigrated from Cuba, also influenced and exposed her to the meaning of hard work and dedication. “The best value they taught me was to be proud of whatever I wanted to do and to do it to the best of my ability.” Quevedo specializes in auto, motorcycle, flood, life and homeowners insurance along with planning expected and unexpected life events. "We cannot always avoid accidents, but we can be prepared to deal with them. When you are prepared, these events pass with a bit more ease." Insurance cannot be purchased online when the average person does not understand what each coverage entails. Elvis was still there finishing his Masters in Hospitality Management, once he graduated he chose to come to Orlando to continue training and I took the plunge soon after. Do you hold an annual pass? If so, to which park? I do not own an annual pass…YET! I need to get one for Universal Studios. What is the last book you read? The last book I ever finished in its entirety was one of the Harry Potter books back in Junior High. Elvis is more the reading type and is currently reading “Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business.” Name your favorite tattoo: I have none, but if I had to choose a tattoo on someone else it would be, hands down, Elvis’ Olympic Rings tattoo from his participation in 2008.

I LIVE HERE. Elvis& Christine Everyone has a story that’s worth telling. And that’s why we’re starting the I Live Here project. We want to make it easy for you to share your story, read your neighbors’ stories, and make this place where we all live feel more like home.

Q&A with CHRISTINE & ELVIS Name and age: Christine Hartmann & Elvis Burrows, 27; Bowser Burrows, 2. Hometown: I (Christine) grew up in Saint Charles, IL, a western Suburb of Chicago, while Elvis grew up in Freeport, Bahamas. Bowser spent his early weeks in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

8

CENTRAL FLORIDA MONTHLY

Current Neighborhood: Randal Lakes. We chose Colonial Grand fairly easily since they have no breed restrictions. Whenever Bowser makes a trip to the front office he walks away with treats and a tennis ball. How do you pay the bills? Elvis is a man of many talents: swimming professionally for the Bahamas, assistant coaching the swim team at Rollins, as well as a manager at Jimmy Hula’s. I coach club volleyball at Nona Sports.

What do you create? I’m definitely the handy type who likes to DIY and Pinterest all day. When we moved here I couldn’t find the perfect dining table or the perfect desk, so naturally, I’ve struck up an interest in building furniture with two-by-fours. Elvis liked my new desk so much we got rid of his and customized a new one just for him! How did you land in Orlando? I went back to Chicago for a new job after graduating from University of Kentucky,

Only in Orlando moment? This happened shortly after moving in to Colonial Grand. Elvis was walking Bowser and happened to see a huge snake—not exaggerating, it was about 3-4 feet long—and it was thick. It was right by our front door, so I ended up calling George at Reptile World asking if he wanted it. His response was along the lines of “if it’s venomous I’ll come get it, if not leave it alone.” We sent a picture and he said it wasn’t venomous, so we let him be. Now, I am always on the lookout for snakes when I take Bowser on walks.

Where can we find you on the web? Instagram for the most part: @lord_bowser (yes, the dog is on IG) @charty32, and @elvisvb n

Dog person or cat person? Dog people for sure, but cats are cool too. If you could change one thing about Orlando, what would it be? If I could change one thing, I would put it closer to the beach.

Last thing you ate at a food truck? I can’t remember the last time we went, but I keep wanting to try the Mofongo truck that’s on Narcoossee. What is your favorite farmers’ market and why? Winter Park. There is this awesome vendor who sells fresh-squeezed orange juice, sometimes with pineapple, mango, etc. It’s the greatest thing I’ve ever drank. Butterbeer, Dole whip, or ____________? Butterbeer! I’m a big sweet tooth and Butterbeer is delicious. My other guilty pleasure is Menchies! Springs, lakes, or oceans? Elvis is definitely an ocean person, I guess I’d say I’m an ocean person too, but since moving here I’ve wanted to go to some springs and see all the manatees.

How you can participate: There are three simple rules to participate in CFM’s I Live Here Project. You must:

1. answer all of the questions. 2. be willing to be photographed in your neighborhood. 3. live, work or play in one of the zip codes we cover: 32832, 32827, 34771, 32809, 32812,32822, 32829, 34741, 34744 or 34773.

ICYMI

O

ur little corner of the world has enjoyed a healthy bit of news since our last issue. In case you missed it (ICYMI), here are the highlights.

Lake Nona

Micro-Apartments, Renderings and Retailers, Oh My! Tavistock’s 11-story mixed-use project in Lake Nona Town Center, currently known as The Distillery, is expected to break ground in April. It’s set to be the area’s first microapartments. So, what’s the dealio with micro-apartments? Micro-housing is trending in tech hubs across the country. It’s targeted to Millennials, a group who values location over square footage and amenities. How small is micro? The average micro-apartment is too small to hold a bed, couch and dining table at the same time. But if you dial Uber Eats and work from your laptop on the regs, it probably appeals. Don’t get it? #theolds Technically, this project will only feature six micro-apartments, each clocking in at 358 sq. ft. The other 151 units will be a mix of studio, one- and two-bedrooms.

16

CENTRAL FLORIDA MONTHLY

But when there’s a tour of occupied units, we’ll be first in line for our ticket. Tavistock also released renderings of its 348unit Ariel Apartments complex. (We’d much rather peek inside a micro-apartment, wouldn’t you?) Eight new retailers were announced for Lake Nona Landing: Lowe’s, TJ Maxx, Mattress One, Firehouse Subs, Anthony Jewelers, UPS, GNC, and Rubio’s. Neighbors expressed mixed reactions about the new group of retailers. Everything from “Oh wow—a mattress store!” <insert eye roll> to “Is there an expected timeline? Excited for Rubio’s!!!” to fears about Lake Nona losing its character in a sea of big-box retail. What do you think? Tavistock submitted an application for a second office building in Lake Nona Town Center. If approved, it will join phase one of the Town Center, anchored by the likes of Marriott Courtyard/Residence Inn and Chroma Modern Bar + Kitchen. All this construction talk is making us hungry. You? Well, chew on this: Lake Nona is now home to Bosphorous Turkish Cuisine and will

be joined by Keke’s Breakfast Cafe in winter 2017. High-end Italian coffeehouse Tutto Caffè is also looking for digs in the neighborhood.

Nemours received initial approval for its pediatric lung transplant program; if approved, it will be the first in the region.

Hello, Healthtopia

Lee Vista

Two wellness initiatives for the community were announced during the Lake Nona Impact Forum, a wellness conference for industry leaders.

Kissimmee

Jiyo, Technogym and Nemours Lung Transplant Program

After leading a guided meditation for 500 neighbors in Crescent Park, Deepak Chopra— yup, *that* Deepak—announced a partnership between Lake Nona and Jiyo, his new health and wellness app. The app will be customized for Lake Nona residents and will feature content focused on personal growth, exercise, nutrition, sleep, and relationships. It’ll also feature health-related events in the area. Technogym will effectively turn Lake Nona into a wellness lab where its sleek workout devices measure, monitor and report on our collective health. LP Fit, USTA National Campus, Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, and The Lake Nona Courtyard and Residence Inn by Marriott will be the among the first spots outfitted with Technogym equipment.

Be still our fried chicken-loving hearts! Bochon, the Korean fried chicken chain, plans to open this summer in the Lee Vista area.

Kissimmee’s heating up, y’all. According to GrowthSpotter: “Orlando-based Elevation Development has started clearing land for the first phase of its Parkview retail project on Kissimmee’s W192 tourist corridor and may have found a buyer for the 120-room hotel pad slated for Phase 2.”

St. Cloud

The City of St. Cloud is seeking $1 million from the state to help finance phase one of Centennial Park, which includes a central water feature and stage. Someone’s got a mad crush on St. Cloud. CalAtlantic Group scooped up Phase 1 of Sunset Groves in the East Narcoossee community for a cool $6.3 million. n

CURB B

appeal

ig home improvement projects often require saving money and hiring a contractor. And they’re totally worth it. But sometimes, our inner decorator wants his or her dream home today—not next year. Get your decorating fix with these three simple DIY projects.

PAINT YOUR DOOR Add a pop of personality to your home by painting the front door in a fun color. It’s a low-cost and low-commitment way to add a lot of charm without spending a lot of time or money.

INSTALL HOUSE NUMBERS Say buh-bye to faded old house numbers and replace them with a more stylish option. Everywhere from IKEA to your local hardware store offers unique ways to personalize your home.

ADD SYMMETRY Sometimes, adding curb appeal isn’t about adding something new; It’s about creating balance with planters and design accents so your eye is drawn to the focal point—your chartreuse front door, for example. n
