Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser’s Beach Volleyball Academy is back in action at Boxi Park! Lake Nona residents and pro beach volleyball players Phil and Jennifer Dalhausser launched the academy earlier this year with classes designed for kids and teens of all skill levels and social leagues for adults. They also offer one-on-one private training or small group sessions for athletes looking to take their game to the next level or students interested in collegiate scouting. But, if you ask Phil, the academy is just the first step in making Lake Nona a national destination for aspiring beach volleyball professionals. “I want to build a beach volleyball community for junior players around here and slowly turn it into the East Coast headquarters for beach volleyball,” said Phil. “Everyone goes out to Los Angeles, but the cost of living is so expensive and beach players don’t make much money starting out. With the academy in Lake Nona, we can offer players the option to work and play in a community based around wellness and health and sports.” As a UCF business graduate and Olympic gold medalist, Phil has a vision to build a beach volleyball community in Lake Nona. He and Jennifer both started with indoor volleyball later in life but made the switch to beach volleyball after just one practice. With the academy in Lake Nona, they hope to inspire younger generations to kick up some sand and dive in to beach volleyball. “I think beach volleyball is a sport that once you play, you’re hooked,” said Jennifer. “I love the vibe, the energy, and the lifestyle around it. After my first practice, I fell in love and stuck with it through high school and college. After college I transitioned to beach volleyball and it made my indoor game one hundred times better! I was quicker, stronger, moved easier, and jumped higher.”

Phil agreed, “My high school had indoor volleyball and I finally decided to try out beach volleyball my senior year. Like Jenn, I was hooked after that first practice.” In addition to teaching the volleyball fundamentals, like Phil and Jennifer’s favorite skill – passing, the power couple hopes that academy students learn valuable life lessons like leadership and learning to live in the moment. “The biggest lesson I like to teach is being present,” said Phil. “I always joke with our kids when we’re playing around that we’re not thinking about our next TikTok, we’re thinking about our next pass.” Jennifer adds, “Another thing we like to teach is trust in the process. In everything you do, there will be steps you have to take to be successful. A lot of our kids come from indoor volleyball and expect to be perfect right away and tend to give up a little quicker. We tell them it’s okay to make mistakes and trust that those mistakes help you learn.” What’s next for Phil and Jennifer on their mission to make Lake Nona the country’s go-to beach volleyball destination? “We’d love to have more courts and host tournaments,” said Jennifer. “You can only practice for so long before you want to test your skills in a competitive way.”

TIPS FOR OVERCOMING

HOLIDAY TEMPTATIONS F R O M T H E D I E T I T I A N S O F T H E O R L A N D O VA

The season of time spent with family, friends, and FOOD is here! This is probably the hardest time of year to stick to your exercise regimen and meal planning with treats everywhere you look - A little here and there may sound harmless, but it will add up faster than you think! Below are some helpful tips to keep you on track and not gain unwanted pounds during the holidays:

• Have a healthy breakfast or snack prior to a

holiday meal or party. If you arrive hungry, you are more likely to overeat.

• Try drinking water before, during, and after your meal to help reduce calorie intake.

• Focus on your family and friends. Holidays are

about spending time with them, not about food. Come up with fun activities so you aren’t fixated on the food around you.

• Limit

“tasting” while you cook- Sometimes we tend to taste a little more than we should. Save the calories for the actual meal.

• Bring your own healthy recipe or treat.

• Be cautions of desserts- Choose a dessert containing fruit if you are unsure.

• Avoid “seconds.”

• Eat from a smaller plate- This will help you control your portions and limit calorie intake.

• Slow down when eating - Take your time,

chew slowly, and give yourself time to listen to your body when it’s satisfied.

• Go for a walk. Once you are done eating, take your family out for a stroll to burn some calories.

• Continue your exercise regimen and meal

planning right after the holiday meal. This means avoid the leftovers [Unless it’s lean protein and vegetables].
