In the heart of Lake Nona’s Medical City, it is impossible to miss the 65 acres that make up the Orlando VA Medical Center. ‘For Those Who Served’ is engraved at the entrance and found in the actions of employees. The 1.2 million square foot building encompasses services specialized to meet the needs of Veterans. As the front doors glide open, visitors find the first step to receive care, known as the Enrollment Office. Once the Enrollment Office has completed the process, eligible Veterans are open to begin taking control of their health. Within the facility’s walls holds many functions. Clinics for specific services make up the first floor of the medical center. The clinics comprise of Primary Care, Audiology, Prosthetics, Cardiology, Dialysis and much more. Beyond appointments, the inpatient unit holds 134 inpatient beds to help Veterans get back on their feet. The range of treatment is from acute to critical care. As part of inpatient care, Veterans are offered the latest technology. Surgeries are less invasive with the help of robotic technology. The da Vinci Xi is a surgical robot used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical specialties. It does not stop there, Veterans can comfortably undergo an MRI and PET CT scans with ambient lighting that draws Veterans to their choice of location. The procedure walls can change to a preferred color or look like a tropical postcard. Innovative technology is only one of the many ways the Orlando VA proves patients are always the top priority. The renowned tools and operations are only part of what makes the facility unique. The employees are what truly make the VA Mission possible- “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan” by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s Veterans.” With countless programs coordinated by employees, there is a little bit of something for every Veteran. The flexible programs are contoured to fit each Veteran that walks through the doors. Making dreams come true, Whole Health gives options and transforms lives. As put best by the Whole Health Coordinator JoAnne Anderson,

“Whole Health moves our healthcare approaches from what is the matter with you as a Veteran to what matters to you.” What matters most to Veterans may be to run a marathon or to try something new. Stepping away from prescriptions and stepping toward evidence based proven exercises provides the opportunity to meet set goals. Whether Veterans want to learn handson how to cook recipes or join a yoga session. There are many avenues to empower and equip patients to achieve and sustain their best lifestyle. Always looking and establishing ways to improve, Veterans can meet their health goals through smart devices. Today it is not rare to Facetime or Skype with family, friends or colleagues. Imagine being able to do the same for health purposes. VA Video Connect (VVC) is that. Anywhere to anywhere is now possible. VVC is an app that allows Veterans to enjoy their morning coffee in their homes or an environment of their choosing. The app directs the session into a virtual medical room hosted on a secure website. Many opportunities await Veterans to dive into. New experiences and breaking from boundaries can be found outside of the medical center as well. Surrounding the facility is the Fisher House, Community Living Center (CLC), Domiciliary and the Simulation Learning Education and Research Network (SimLEARN). Broadening our mission beyond medical

needs are the surrounding components that help to better assist Veterans. Imagine a free home away from home. The Fisher House provides a 14,500-square feet exclusive home made for loved ones of Veterans and active duty military members. Free of charge lodging and meals often prepared by volunteers allow for guests to instantly feel the weight lifted off their shoulders once seeing their new temporary home. Breaking from the stigma of mental health, the medical center continues to further extend mental health treatment. The Domiciliary is a foundation for Veterans to rebuild who they are. As a residential rehabilitation, the therapeutic approaches help to mold a chance of success. Veterans experience new adventures including playing tennis at USTA, riding horses, producing artwork and many other niches. Other than a temporary home, the CLC is a permanent home for Veterans. The Center is not your typical Granddad’s home. The vibrant group never has an average day, with Olympic games or musical therapy sessions- every day brings something new. Breaking edge technology is not only found inside the medical center. SimLEARN serves as VA’s national hub for simulation healthcare training. Serving the largest integrated health care system in the world, SimLEARN provides an ever-growing body of curricula and best practices to improve care. Thousands visit every day, whether it is for examinations, completing cancer treatment, or participating in support groups- you name it, we do it. CENTRAL FLORIDA MONTHLY

This September, the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona celebrates another first as it prepares to host the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals for the first Over the next three years, the USTA National Campus will host the premier 16-and-under world team competitions, marking the first time the event will be held in the United States since the 1994 finals, which were staged in Tucson, Ariz. The event has been held in Budapest, Hungary, the past two years, with the U.S. Junior Fed Cup team won back-to-back titles. In 2018, the team was led to victory by teenage phenom Coco Gauff, who, less than a year later, found herself playing in the main draw of the US Open. This year’s event will feature some of the top up-andcoming junior players in the country representing the U.S. and competing against other nations from around the globe. The competition includes 16 nations on both the boys’ and girls’ sides, competing first in round-robin groups, then in a knockout bracket to determine the winner. The U.S. has won five Junior Fed Cup titles (2008, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018) and three Junior Davis Cup titles (1999, 8

REGENERATIVE SPORTS, SPINE AND SPA REGEN’S MISSION IS TO GIVE YOU EXCEPTIONAL ONE-ON-ONE

EXPERIENCE THAT LEADS YOU DOWN A PATH TO NATURAL HEALING Think about your last visit to see a physician. Did you get all your questions answered? Did you leave feeling like your expectations were met or did you feel like a number on a page being pushed through a very transactional system where you’re desired outcomes weren’t a part of the treatment process? Regen‘s mission is to give you an exceptional 1 on 1 experience that leads you down a path to natural healing, so you can live life without limitations from pain. In 2017, nearly 4 trillion dollars was spent on healthcare; however, only 10% went to conservative care. In other words, the majority of the population is having unnecessary surgeries or are being handed a prescription for medication that doesn’t get to the root cause of their pain. The team at Regen believes in using the power of the body’s natural healing ability through regenerative medicine, stem cell therapy, physical therapy and exercise. With nearly 20 years of expertise in her field, Dr. Pallavi Cherukupally has done well over 15,000 nonsurgical procedures to help people recover from back and neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, and hip pain. Previously a practitioner in the Atlanta area, she was voted a Top Doctor 4 times from 2013-2017 and most recently in Orlando for 2018. “I had stem cell injections from my own bone marrow in my lower back discs and my knee with Dr. Cherukupally and I am so thankful and satisfied with the results. I had lower back pain and sciatica for 10 years and now I am pain free and feel better and better every day. I recommend stem cell treatment with Dr. Cherukupally to everyone. I promise you will not regret it.” - W.R. As a medical doctor (MD) who received her training at LSU medical school, University of Chicago for residency, and fellowship training for spine and sports medicine - she finds her passion in getting people back to enjoying their lives, whether that’s a sport they love, a job they can no longer perform, or just for overall health and daily life. Daniel Tribby, her business partner, has 15 years of experience in the physical rehabilitation field as a Certified Athletic Trainer. He received his training in Kinesiology (the study of human movement) 10

and has been actively involved in the treatment of athletic injuries since 2004. Also, previously in Atlanta, he has published articles in Back Pain magazine and has been working with Dr. Cherukupally since 2006. He holds specialty certifications in ergonomics, concussion evaluation, and neuromuscular education. “I have had a long history of low back pain. I have been to physical [rehabilitation] at several different locations, but not one as hands on as [Regenerative PT and Wellness]. Daniel has put together an incredible team (Amy and Bri) that make your goals their own. It’s been a long road for me, but this team has put me back on track. I could not be happier with my progress and all thanks to [Regen].” Daniel’s personal health mission is to help educate people on how to recover from bone, muscle, joint and spine injuries without surgery or medications. Prior to opening Regen, Dr. Cherukupally and Daniel were both working in the medical field, but had a dream of opening their own practice that would accomplish three objectives. First, they wanted to create a space where people could be examined as a whole person rather than their injuries alone. Through their experience working in other offices and with their own injuries, they have seen a common thread in many other physicians offices: a tendency to think of clients solely as an injured body part without taking the time to step back and examine the whole body. Secondly, they wanted to offer an allencompassing practice that would satisfy all your physical needs. A one stop shop of sorts, where you have access to all the top regenerative medicine and stem cell procedures and 1 on 1 physical rehabilitation and exercise programs all under one roof. This greatly improves the communication between their team of specialists and ultimately their client’s outcomes. Lastly, Regen seeks to empower others working in this field by giving them the opportunity to treat clients the way they were trained to. In the vast majority of medical practices, health providers typically see a large volume of clientele on any

given day, limiting their ability to examine, diagnose, and offer treatment to the best of their abilities. Dr. Cherukupally and Daniel understand how much time, effort, and preparation goes into becoming a medical provider and that is why they will never ask their employees to sacrifice quality of care. Their clients get the time they need to tell their story and ask questions.

their injuries, and look forward to continuing that trend in the Orlando area.

For nearly 2 years, they have been able to meet these objectives by offering people access to exceptional customer service and treatments that don’t involve surgery or prescription pills. They are grateful to have clients who have trusted them with

club has access to from Moss Park. Smiles returned as some of the awkwardness was replaced by the realization that they were moving the boat.

South Orlando Rowing Association (SORA), a Lake Nona area community rowing club serving school aged youth rowers and adult crews, held it’s annual open house event, Breakfast at the Boatyard from 8:30am-Noon on Saturday, August 17th. This event featuring an introduction to the sport and some great home-cooked breakfast was open to the public and gives everyone a chance to try this full body, low impact sport. As one of the High School crew’s captains, Abby Dutton said to a group of new rowers she was teaching the sport “This isn’t like football or basketball. Nobody who comes out to try our sport has ever done it before so it’s a level playing field.” There were plenty of smiles as rowers were shown around the boatyard, introduced to the shells (boats), oars and rowing machines that rowers use for training.

According to SORA’s Program Director Kelly Hagan, the goal of this event is to expose an amazing sport to as many people as possible because at the scholastic level it’s a great character and team building sport for kids not to mention the scholarship opportunities at the college level. For adults, rowing a low-impact, full-body workout that is unparalleled in its ability to provide a fun and rewarding exercise experience. SORA has been a thriving crew team in the Lake Nona area for many years with aspirations to make a competitive impact nationally but provides coaching and opportunity for all levels of rower. Under the guidance of head coach Terry Davision, program director Kelly Hagan and new coach Deidrah Kennedy, SORA is hoping to continue to grow the club and make this sport a part of Lake Nona’s healthy lifestyle initiatives.

2.

The biggest challenge is teaching the basic rowing motion. This introduction happened on the rowing machines (called Ergs) before the new rowers got on the water. Since the biggest misconception of rowing is that it’s mostly an “arm sport” our volunteer group of teachers worked their charges through the rowing motion that begins with a strong push from the legs which slides the whole body back on a moving seat mimicking those found in every crew shell. After the new rowers were shown proper rowing technique, they were led to the dock, where they were shown how to hold an oar properly, and how to safely step into the boat.

3.

Each group, made up of 4 experienced rowers and 4 firsttimers, took their seats in an 8+. This is a boat comprised of 8 rowers along with a coxswain, who steers and directs the boat. They soon found out that while the motion was the same, rowing is not as easy on the water as it is on the rowing machine. The great news is that with a little practice, they all began to get their oars in the water and take some tentative strokes on beautiful Lake Mary Jane, one of two lakes the CENTRAL FLORIDA MONTHLY

CENTRAL FLORIDA MONTHLY

According to Gallup’s State of the American Workplace 2017 report, 33 percent of American employees are engaged and performing to their full potential and almost half are struggling to balance work and life. Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute (HPI) has been helping individuals and companies reimagine their work life balance for more than 30 years in Lake Nona and now the company is in a new global headquarters. “We tap into how people are, what motivates them, what will have them be their best selves,” said Lowinn Kibbey, Global Head of HPI.

Every aspect of the LEED-certified training and research facility is built to optimize human performance within a healthy, highly efficient, and sustainable environment. Over the years, HPI has researched the specialty field of employee engagement. Before combining their programs in 1992, co-founders Dr. Jim Loehr, Ed.D and Dr. Jack Groppel, Ph.D studied performance and engagement for decades on their own. Loehr, a performance psychologist, began training and

studying athletes in the 1970s while Groppel pioneered the Corporate Athlete® concept, helping both business executives and athletes increase performance levels. They discovered early on that having a fully engaged workforce is integral to success and only possible when employees are expanding and managing their energy effectively in order to meet the enormous demands placed on them both personally and professionally. HPI provides the fundamental skills to meet those demands through Performance and Resilience courses for professional athletes, Fortune 500 CEOs and you! Courses are open to the public and designed to provide you with ways to manage your energy and maintain wellbeing beyond the program.

Health and wellbeing are at the forefront of Lake Nona’s focus and design. With its expanded location and continued focus on research, wellness, and personal performance, HPI adds to Lake Nona’s larger human performance and training hub including the U.S. Tennis Association National Campus, the Orlando VA’s SimLearn Center, and opening early 2020, the KPMG Learning, Development and Innovation Facility. Visit www.humanperformanceinstitute.com to learn more and register for a course.

Performance courses focus on managing energy while Resilience courses focus on managing stress. Both courses offer a single day program with an alternate two-and-ahalf-day Performance course option. Keynote presentations and online courses are also available. In addition to learning about physical fitness, participants are introduced to tools that encourage them to continue exercising after they leave – tools such Johnson & Johnson’s “7 Minute Workout” designed by Chris Jordan, Director of Exercise Physiology at HPI. Did you know that you can fit a workout in with seven minutes and zero equipment? “If you were to come through this program, I hope that you would go home with a whole new sense of what you’re here for, that you have a sense of meaning in life that is so powerful that you begin to notice that 30, 60, 90 days from now, you’re treating yourself differently,” said Kibbey. The HPI campus features a unique connection to nature from the moment you arrive. Did you know that you can mentally reset in 16 seconds? A scenic, mindfulness walking path outside the facility guides you through a 16-second meditation, creating the opportunity for you to recover in today’s 24/7 world. Try it right now with these steps: deep breath in, chin up, smile, exhale, deep breath in, shake your arms out, roll your shoulders, exhale, deep breath in, moment of focus, picture success, exhale, deep breath in, I am thankful for ____, hold that thought, and exhale. “This space is really different than a lot of other spaces,” said Kibbey. “This is an experience.” A plant wall welcomes you at the entrance while floor-toceiling windows create clear views of nature with natural light illuminating community spaces. These biophilic, natureconnected design principles are known to help reduce stress and improve wellbeing. Adding plants inside your home can give your space the same experience. As you move throughout the property, there is a thoughtful approach to addressing physical, mental, and emotional needs. From the Corporate Athlete Course to the state-ofthe-art fitness center, HPI’s products and services emphasize Johnson & Johnson’s commitment to promoting health and wellness.
