WHAT MATTERS TO YO U?

By Andrea N. Madrazo Thursday, January 16, 2020

W

hen your heart fails, and you are only given 12 more years to live. What do you do? Standing taller than ever 30 years later, Harrison Greene, Air Force Veteran, trashed his cigarettes and took on meditation. Meditation and many other non-traditional approaches (Yoga, Qi-Gong, Tai Chi, Zumba, Pain School, etc.) to healthcare can be found across the Orlando VA Healthcare System thanks to the VA Whole Health Program. The cutting-edge care does not resemble a doctor’s office that centers around questioning what is wrong with you, but instead centers around what matters to you. Meditation is not new to Mr. Greene so upon his discovery of the Whole Health Program, he felt right at home. He says, “I went to the Introduction to Whole Health meeting. The meeting described all aspects and from then on - I was like bring it on! ”Grounded in mindfulness and renewal, Veterans no matter their walks of life or pain levels, discover what many thought they never would find. From nerve damage to weak knees, Veterans find their niche in the program and completely transform. Meditation is Mr. Greene’s niche. As a Veteran, husband, volunteer and so much more, his mind is constantly running. Meditation is his escape from the day-to-day. The power of meditation steps away from the constant influx of racing thoughts and focuses on the present - The here and now. With a big grin, Mr. Greene says, “After 30 years of meditating,

I had the best experience in my life at an Orlando VA Medical Center meditation class with Dr. Shilpa Shukla. I do not know why everyone doesn’t do it [meditation]!” Referred to as the ‘Meditation Guru,’ Dr. Shukla hosts the weekly class to spread the peace meditation brings to her to Veterans. She says, “Meditation has changed my life for good. It makes such a difference in my life, I want to share the wealth, peace and balance with Veterans too. It makes it wonderful for everyone!”As part of Whole Health, coaches work with Veterans and loved ones to support their goals. Mr. Greene’s experiences with coaches has formed unbreakable bonds. He says, “In the Whole Health experience, coaches do not talk at you, they talk with you. They are part of the group. They are just as involved in what they are teaching you as you are listening to them. You forget they are coaches, they become someone like you helping you out. The coaches participate right alongside you. ”The focus is you - and all that comes with you - Your mind, body and soul. Said best by Mr. Greene and the core purpose of Whole Health, he says “I feel like I have been rejuvenated.” When was the last time you did something for you? Take control of your health with Whole Health! 8

IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH AT HOME Did you resolve to get more sleep this year? it is something our body reacts to in so many ways,” said Or maybe you’re trying to eat healthier, be more active or simply make more time for you. No matter what your personal health and wellness goals are, there’s one place where they all begin – at home! Understanding that health begins at home, the innovators behind Lake Nona’s Wellness Home built on Innovation and Technology (WHIT) are sharing some tips to support a healthier lifestyle. Throughout the home, located in Lake Nona’s Laureate Park neighborhood, you’ll find the latest health solutions and technologies that promote healthy living in a real-life environment – like SleepScore’s Sleep Sanctuary in the master bedroom. The sleep sanctuary features exclusively curated products and solutions that not only help people get better sleep, but also help them track and understand their sleep patterns.“We all sleep, every day for our whole life. And during sleep, our bodies recover, our minds re-energize, and our wrinkles soften. We wake up energized, refreshed, our creativity is enhanced, and our performance improves,” said Colin Lawlor, CEO at Sleepscore Labs and WHIT innovator. Lawlor’s team helped create the sleep sanctuary at WHIT where everything from the mattress to the curtains are curated to promote better sleep. The bedroom also features lighting solutions that help promote the body’s natural response to the sunrise and sunset. “Light is a nutrient, it is something we internalize,

Fred Maxik, Founder & Chief Technology Officer at Lighting Science responsible for lighting features throughout WHIT. Besides the bedroom, there’s another peaceful place just inside the front door at WHIT demonstrating how a small space in the home can rejuvenate your brain. “Your brain is who you are. It’s the way that you sense, communicate, remember and make decisions,” said Ricardo Gild-DaCosta, CEO of Neuroverse and WHIT innovator exploring how your home environment can impact your brain and mental health. The wellness hub of the home, the kitchen, was reimagined to inspire healthier habits from growing food to smarter storage and disposal. “It’s time to add ease and joy to establishing daily habits that nourish us to promote vitality and longevity. The food we eat powers our existence. It impacts our cognitive performance, physical performance, emotions, and more,” said Veronica Schreibeis Smith, founder of Vera Iconica Architecture and innovator behind the Vera Iconica Wellness Kitchen™ at WHIT. From room to room, the innovators are exploring ways to collaboratively bring together nutrition, exercise, rest, sleep and socialization to improve health and wellness from the core of our daily lives – our home. Here are some of their tips to help support your daily health and wellbeing.

GET MORE SLEEP

EAT HEALTHIER

Set aside one hour before lights out for a relaxing nightly routine. Use the time to prepare for the next day, brush your teeth and do something calming such as taking warm shower or relaxing with a book.

It’s difficult to move forward with healthy habits if you have old items encouraging past behavior. Empty every cupboard, your refrigerator, and pantry. Once emptied, remove expired products and unhealthy, processed foods with preservatives and thickeners. Replace with whole foods that have simple ingredients.

1. Establish a bedtime ritual

2. Dim the lights

Exposure to artificial, blue light both before and during sleep suppresses melatonin, the hormone that helps your sleep-wake cycle. Dim the lights and avoid electronic devices, such as cellphones, TVs, and computers at least one hour before bedtime to prepare for sleep. Once you’re tucked in, make sure it’s all lights out.

3. Keep it quiet

Even when sleeping, your brain is actively listening and noises in the bedroom can disrupt your sleep. Do what you can to block outside noise and if necessary, try a white noise machine.

BE MORE ACTIVE 1. Exercise daily

Keeping your workouts on an optimal schedule is great for your sleep. Try to exercise in the morning, or at least three hours before bedtime to avoid overstimulation when it’s time for bed.

2. Get sunshine

If you are feeling a bit tired, it may be time for a healthy dose of Vitamin D. Vitamin D, also known as the “Sunshine Vitamin”, is critical to your body’s physical and mental function and not getting enough can leave you feeling downright sluggish. Luckily, getting a boost of Vitamin D is as simple as getting outside and soaking up some sun.

1. Purge

2. Storage and Organization

Use clear glass or silicone food containers where you can see your food and bulk goods. Group utensils, tools and items with similar uses in the same area where all items can be easily seen. For example, chopping and slicing tools together, cookware and bakeware together, all small appliances together, and so on. This will increase efficiency and ease of use.

3. Engage Your Children

Help children establish strong foundations and healthy food relationships, learning best practices to optimize nutritional value. Keeping a stool nearby is a simple way for them to be involved with food preparation on a daily basis.

MAKE MORE TIME FOR YOU 1. Make room for relaxation

Create a space in your home where you can go to peacefully recharge your mind and body. It can be as simple as a corner in the family room with a comfy cushion, essential oil diffuser or salt lamp.

2. Practice meditation

Beyond physical space to relax, make time in your daily routine for you. Consider using this time to clear your mind and refocus your brain through meditation.
