Timothy W. Liezert is Director for the VA Medical Center in Orlando, Florida serving an area of nearly 90,000 Veteran patients. The new Orlando VA Medical Center at Lake Nona is located on a 65-acre campus in the burgeoning Medical City. The 1.2 million square foot facility cost $600 million to construct. The medical center boasts a large multispecialty outpatient clinic, 134-inpatient beds, 120-community living center beds and a 60-bed domiciliary. Due to his key role in spearheading this cutting-edge project, a great source of pride for the Lake Nona community, Liezert is recognized as December's Community Innovator. Prior to his appointment in 2006, Liezert served as Acting Director/Associate Medical Center Director at the VA Western New York Healthcare System. Liezert began his VA career as an Engineering Co-operative student at the Cleveland Ohio VA Medical Center and worked in Engineering and Facilities Management. Liezert received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Akron. He later received his Masters of Business Administration degree from Western Michigan University. Liezert is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Q: How will the new Veteran's Hospital serve as a model for other VA Hospitals across the nation? (Message Point: describe the unique design characteristics of the Medical Center)
A: When establishing the requirements for our new Veteran’s Hospital we included a number of unique goals that makes this facility much different than the rest. We chose to create a “stage” where healing could occur by maximizing concepts of healing environments, such as introducing abundant light into spaces; creating spaces of introspection such a gardens, vistas overlooking water elements, and designated conservation areas. We also worked to reduce the level of noise both created and heard in the medical spaces. We worked to reduce the industrial feel of the Medical Center by separating the logistical flows of materials and goods from the spaces our Veterans would use daily. Most importantly, our Medical Center needed to be built in a way that respected and honored the Service of our Veterans. We believe that our design incorporates a monument to the service of our Veterans, while it addresses their need for a healing environment. We hope this may serve as a prototype for other Healthcare Organizations in the future.
