CONWAY CHAIN OF LAKES ENJOY THE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER ON ONE OF ORLANDO’S CLEANEST FRESH WATER LAKES
The Lake Conway Chain of Lakes is one of Orlando’s most popular lakefront communities. Similar to the Windermere/ Butler Chain of Lakes and the Winter Park Chain of Lakes, the Lake Conway Chain has a rich history and features some of Central Florida’s most valuable waterfront properties. The Conway Chain is comprised of Lake Gatlin, Lake Conway, Big Lake Conway, and a number of canals along the way. Locals will often use terms like Middle Conway, South Lake Conway, and Little Lake Conway when discussing what are essentially four different pools of the two main Conway lakes. Native Americans called the region surrounding the Conway chain of lakes “Okehitanatchee,” translated as “land of fair waters.” In 1843, Benjamin Whitner of nearby Mellonville was awarded a contract to survey lands in this vicinity, and named Lake Conway for his superior Valentine Yelverton Conway, Surveyor General of Florida. Until development and drainage changes in the 1900s, seasonal rains transformed the Conway chain into one big lake. Now Hoffner Avenue divides North and Middle Lake Conway, and Nela Avenue divides Middle and Little Lake Conway. Early settlers used the lake for drinking water, bathing, food, and entertainment. Prominent Orlando citizens such as the Dickson family of Dickson and Ives Department Store had
summer homes on the lake where they came to fish and swim. Crittenden Dock was located where Randolph Avenue, a road Will Wallace Harney named for his wife’s family, dead ends at Lake Conway. It has long been a favorite recreation spot, and as early as 1882 guests at the adjacent Macy Hotel used it to launch pleasure cruises and fishing expeditions. The Crittenden family acquired the site and built a dock that was popular with swimmers and boaters. In 2000, Charles and Pearl Crittenden deeded the property to Orange County for use as a public boat ramp. The Lake Conway Chain of Lakes’ proximity to Downtown Orlando is truly unique. Homes around the Conway Chain are just minutes from Downtown, Orlando International Airport, several major hospitals, and the very popular SODO shopping and dining district, along with the up and coming Hourglass District.
“
The sandbar, located on the north lobe of the South Lake is always a good spot to tie up in the sun, relax with your favoritea cold beverage, while you catch up with friends, family and neighbors.
”
The lakes of the Conway Chain are some of the best in Orlando for watersports. Because the lakes are large and deep, and the canals that interconnect the lakes are well-maintained and navigable year round, you can almost always find good water for whatever type of activity you seek. According to Wakeboarding Magazine, Lake Conway is one of the Top Five Wakeboarding lakes in the state of Florida. Besides being home to many professional watersport athletes, this spring fed lake offers an optimal landscape for skiing, paddleboarding and boating. Additionally, these lakes tend to be a great social scene. Barbecues, dock parties, bonfires and sunset cruises are the norm along the white sandy shores of the Lake Conway Chain. The Conway Sandbar is known for fun in the sun. The sandbar, located on the north lobe of the South Lake is always a good spot to tie up in the sun, relax with your favorite cold beverage, while you catch up with friends, family and neighbors. Don’t be surprised if by the end of the day, if you’ve made a few new friends too! Grab your sunscreen, sunglasses and cooler and hit the waters of the Conway Chain. Start a new weekend tradition!

Guests can rent a court by the hour or the Nemours Family Zone, which features smaller court designed for children, are free to use when programming is not scheduled. With summer around the corner, the USTA National Campus is gearing up for another successful year of summer camps. Registration is now open for Summer Camp 2019 at the USTA National Campus. This year’s camp will offer a wide variety of options for kids of every skill level, ages 5-17, including both morning and full-day sessions. Summer Camp 2019 will feature professional coaching and tennis training, combined with the perfect blend of competition, camaraderie and fun. In addition to morning on-court tennis training and afternoon match-play opportunities, the camp’s expert coaching staff will help guide players in developing comprehensive and individualized training plans. They will also offer personal guidance on tournament play and competitive scheduling. The camps consist of nine one-week sessions that can be registered for individually. The sessions begin on Monday, June 3, and run through Friday, Aug. 9. There will be no camp the week of July 1-5 in observance of Independence Day. Full-day camp runs from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and includes lunch for each camper. Morning camp runs from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Prices vary, based on age and skill level. Anyone interested in Summer Camp 2019 or any of the other USTA National Campus programs are encouraged to visit www.ustanationalcampus.com. In addition to the weekly and daily programming, the USTA National Campus hosts more than 100 local, regional, national and international events each year. In July, the campus will host some of its most anticipated events yet, as World TeamTennis comes to the courts in Lake Nona for the first time. The Orlando Storm will make its debut as a WTT expansion franchise this year, led by Orlando resident and world No. 14 Madison Keys. WTT introduced professional team tennis to the world in 1974, with Billie Jean King famously serving as its co-founder. The new teams in Orlando and Las Vegas join the league’s existing franchises – New York Empire, Orange County Breakers, Philadelphia Freedoms, San Diego Aviators, Springfield Lasers and Washington Kastles – for play in July 2019. The WTT season consists of seven home matches and seven away matches for each team and will run from July 14-31. The Storm begin with a pair of home matches on July 14-15 and continue the home slate July 17-18 and July 24, 26-27. In 2018, each of WTT’s teams incorporated select tennis stars from the ATP and WTA tours – including seven-time Grand Slam singles champion and 13-year WTT veteran Venus Williams, 2019 Australian Open and 2018 US Open women’s singles champion Naomi Osaka, 2017 US Open women’s champ Sloane Stephens, and twins Bob and Mike Bryan, the most decorated doubles team in tennis history.

SHAMROCK AUTOBODY
Q&A WITH MIKE REILLY SR. FOUNDER/OWNER OF SHAMROCK AUTO BODY So tell our readers a bit about Shamrock Auto. How long have you been in business in St.Cloud? Shamrock Auto first opened in February of 2000 at our current location in St. Cloud. So, 19 years plus and the business is stronger than ever. We are so grateful for the support we’ve received from the community since day one.
I understand Shamrock is family owned and multigenerational? Yes, Shamrock is a multi-generational, family-owned business. My father had his own auto body shop when I was a child. From an early age I was going to work with him and, as I became a young man, began to work in the shop as well. That is how I ended up in the business. Guess it’s in our DNA. Eventually, I decided to open my own shop and now my son, Mike Reilly, Jr., has worked alongside me for the last 7 years. My wish is to pass the business down to him, and hopefully, his son as well.
Our state-of-the-art Body Shop is ICAR Certified, the Service Center is ASE Certified and we also have two Master Techs in our Service Center. We are committed to spending the time and resources to make sure all our employees are trained and certified on the latest equipment. Whether you drive a jeep or a Jaguar, Shamrock has, and can, repair it.
At Shamrock, you have such longevity with your employees. Once they join the Shamrock team, they stay long term. What do you attribute this too? Again, this comes back to our core value and drive, family. My employees become family when they start their career with Shamrock. I do my very best, day in and out, to take care my family, friends and employees. I believe in taking care of and giving back to anyone who has taken care of me. At Shamrock, it’s just the way we do business.
You have been so successful in St. Cloud and are looking to branch out into new areas with new locations. What
What was the inspiration behind Shamrock Auto?
areas are you looking to expand the business into?
Shamrock Auto came from a drive to be independent. Growing up, I always knew one day I would have my own shop like my father. Shamrock is drawn from my family’s heritage, we are first generation Irish. My wife and I moved our family here from Ireland in 1996.
We have been so fortunate to have our shop in St. Cloud for this long and we love serving our community. With that being said, and the way the area is growing, our next area of interest is Lake Nona. It only makes sense. With the current growth along Narcoossee Road into Lake Nona, it’s a natural fit. The residents in Nona have a love for community like we do. When we do open our second location in Lake Nona, we want the residents to already know us, or at least feel like they do. We look forward to working very hard to earn their trust and business. Like in St. Cloud, residents can trust and depend on Shamrock Auto Body for any of their repair needs.
Can you tell us the services Shamrock provides? Shamrock Auto offers a wide variety of services. Our Paint and Body shop can reapir everything from minor cosmetic damage to a major collision. We have an Auto Repair (Mechanic) Shop that does everything from oil changes, tires, to complete engine and transmission repair. We also handle your insurance claims to make the process of getting your car repaired after an accident, easier. We understand how stressful being in an accident can be and we do our very best to assist our clients with the smallest of details. Our shop can handle all repairs from A to Z to keep your car running and on the road. We are happy to offer complimentary towing to all our local customers within a 10 mile radius.
What sets Shamrock apart from the other body shops in the area? We are one of the last independent and family-owned body shops in our area. Shamrock is a growing business that continues to keep the small town and family values in place that have gotten us to where we are. We treat our customers like family.
What current certifications do your employees hold to keep you on the cutting edge of the autobody industry? 14
CENTRAL FLORIDA MONTHLY
After meeting you both, it’s obvious how much you care about and give back to the local community. Why is community and giving back, so important to you and your family? Our community has been very good to us over the years. We would not still be in business without their support and loyalty throughout the years. Giving back and helping local residents within the community is priority number one at Shamrock!
Lastly, if there is one thing you would like our readers to know about Shamrock, what would that be? We ask for anyone who does not know us to come and get to know us. We always do our very best to be fair and honest with our customers. If you ever need help, we are a phone call away and want everyone to know that. We promise to treat you like family.
