A: The Lake Nona Life Project is a long-term community health and wellness research study that was launched last year as an initiative of the Lake Nona Institute, with founding sponsorship from Johnson & Johnson Health and Wellness Solutions, and support from GuideWell Innovation. Modeled after the famous Framingham Heart Study, the Lake Nona Life Project is designed to study the connections between lifestyles and health among those who live and work in the 11-square-mile Lake Nona community. Increasingly, we talk about the importance of lifestyle on personal health. But modern communities are a complicated intersection of home and work life affecting diet, activity levels, sleep quality and many other health factors. The Lake Nona Life Project will give us an unprecedented opportunity to gain new insights into the effects of lifestyle – including how we live and work in our communities – on health and well-being that can help future generations. Q: What is your role with the Lake Nona Life Project? A: There are many different ways the community can get involved in this project, and

my job is to help each person identify the level of participation that best suits them. I work closely with a talented team of student research assistants and together we meet with residents in their homes or at community events. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for residents to learn about the Lake Nona Life Project, and to help them complete the registration process. For people who are busy and pressed for time, the basic survey participation level is perfect. This is a once-a-year, 30-minute questionnaire about your personality, health, and lifestyle that can be completed online or by phone. For others who have more time, or a deeper interest in health-related research, there are additional sub-studies on topics related to diverse health problems (e.g. sleep disorders, allergies, stress management). Community members can also become “Champs” of the project, and work directly with me and the student researchers to spread the word.
