RESIDENTS COME TOGETHER TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT WITH CHALK ART Lake Nona is known for its one-of-a-kind public art displays. From the multi-colored “Glass House” to “Disco” the chrome dog sculpture and the iconic “Beacon” tower in Lake Nona Town Center, the community’s signature artwork has been the backdrop for countless special moments and celebrations. Recently, Lake Nona residents added their own illustrations to the community’s public art program using one simple tool: chalk. Thanks to the “Chalk Your Walk” challenge, more than 100 families in the Laureate Park neighborhood have decorated their sidewalks and driveways with doodles and designs spreading positive and reassuring messages, thanking hospital staff and first responders, and encouraging others to stay home. This effort to share joy and solidarity, while also practicing social distancing, provided the entire community with a special reason to get outside and explore what new creations have been added to the neighborhood.
From obstacle courses to sing-a-longs, residents put their artistic talents on display. Resident Maggie Fischer drew a stunning “Nona Lisa” interpretation of the famous “Mona Lisa” in addition to a re-creation of “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” “I think it’s really important to balance out a lot of the fears and unknown that’s going on right now with inspiration,” said Fischer. “There have always been times like this, and I think humans in general have a good history of bringing something beautiful out of something negative.” Other colorful displays featured an interactive element – including a butterfly wings, a surf board, and weightlifting – where neighbors walking by could become part of the picture. If you see any chalk art in the community, make sure to share your photos by tagging @LearnLakeNona on social media and use #LNChalkWalk.

Light the Night Parade The Orlando Police Department wrapped the Orlando VA Medical Center in vibrant blue and red lights to show support to our healthcare team and to salute our Veterans. Words can’t come close to describing the instant love felt by all. It is times like these that the community comes together and reminds us all that we are not in this fight alone.
When asked what his first step was, he responded, “You have to find what is going to fit you and why you gained weight. I did not want to sacrifice my hunger, I wanted to eat. I knew there was a way, I just had to find There isDonation a way you can eat and still Beepit. & Park Pizza not gain weight. For me that is counting my carb intake.”

A special delivery from Park Pizza & Brewing Company Lake Nona was delivered to our healthcare heroes with the help of the Beep mobile! The bags of fresh salads and boxes filled with delicious pizza brought much needed smiles to our team. Thank you to the local Lake Nona organizations for giving back and thinking of us! You made many people’s day.
OUR HEROES Balloons As OVAMC employees arrived to work, many could not help but to smile as the community continues to show love. A Veteran owned business, Kjuana’s Event Decor, constructed a handmade balloon sign to show appreciation to our healthcare team at the OVAMC Employee Entrance gate. “ We want the medical staff to know how much we truly appreciate them, their support, and their effort in caring for the COVID-19 patients, providing treatment, and helping to keep the community healthy! I hope they enjoy the display and feel the love as they arrive to work in the morning! “ -Ms. Kjuana, U.S. Army Veteran and Owner 10

Employee Spotlight OVAMC Employees have volunteered to be at the front lines to help prevent exposure and protect Veterans and employees. Their dedication goes beyond the usual callThey are standing tall and ready to fight the pandemic. When you think of frontline employees fighting the current COVID-19 pandemic, you think of those with blue scrubs performing medical procedures. Although, those wearing brown scrubs are you as important in keeping a safe and healthy environment. Without precise diagnostic information provided by our Laboratory scientists, answers to many life-and-death healthcare decisions would not be possible. These healthcare heroes complete 4,500,000+ tests per year to ensure our #Veterans receive specific care to reach their greatest potential. Although their uniform does not include a cape, especially during these times each team member deserves one. Thank you for devoting your passion to help in the current pandemic fight! A special thank you goes out to the OVAMC Housekeeping Aid team! Their efforts keep our facilities pristine clean and extra safe as we work to fight COVID-19.
“Serving Veterans means a lot to me, especially being a Veteran myself. Anything I can do to make their trip to the VA better, I will do. My job is probably the most important with the current virus. When cleaning the patient rooms, I always think about if I were sick how I would expect and want the cleanliness of my room to be. -Jason Bailey, OVAHCS Housekeeping Aid and U.S. Army Veteran
World of Beer (Downtown Orlando Pub) Donation World of Beer (WOB) stopped by the OVAMC recently to personally thank and give back to our frontline night shift team. WOB donated moving boxes full of food to ensure the night shift staff start off their evenings with their tummies full and ready to serve our Veterans! Thank you for thinking of our frontline healthcare heroes!
OVAMC Domiciliary Chalk Fun The OVAMC Domiciliary Veterans traded in their indoor activities for some outside chalk art fun. The main entrance is now covered in bright colors and inspirational messages to remind us all that we are in this together!

CENTRAL FLORIDA FIREHOUSE SUBS RESTAURANTS
DONATE MORE THAN 2,100 MEALS TO LOCAL HEROES To thank healthcare workers and first responders for their service during this time of uncertainty, Firehouse Subs franchisees across Central Florida have partnered with the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation to donate more than 2,100 meals to local healthcare workers, first responders and individuals in need. Franchisees Don Davey and Scott Anthony donated more than 500 meals to healthcare workers, first responders and employees at Advent Health Hospital in Apopka, Deland Police Department, Orlando Police Department, City of Altamonte Springs Police Department, Orange County Fire Rescue Station 36, Osceola Regional Medical Center, Solaris Healthcare in Ocoee, Advent Health in Kissimmee, Orlando Health in Winter Garden and Nemours Hospital. The two own 13 Firehouse Subs restaurants in the Orlando area and are honored to give back to the communities who have supported them for nearly two decades. “Supporting public safety efforts and our local heroes has always been a part of what we do at Firehouse Subs,” said Davey. “It’s more important than ever in these times, and we have to do what we can to support each other.” “We want our local heroes to know that we appreciate what they do for us,” Anthony said. “If we can brighten their day by providing a hearty meal, we are more than happy to do that.”
Area Representatives and Franchisees Mike and Suzanne Kelly oversee all of the Central Florida Firehouse Subs restaurants and own restaurants in Leesburg, Clermont, Orange City and Lake Mary. Seeing a need in their communities, the Kellys partnered with the Foundation to donate hundreds of meals from their restaurants, including more than 200 meals to healthcare workers at Advent Hospital and South Seminole Hospital. Over on the coastline, Franchisees Jeff and Britt Diaz have donated more than 100 meals to the Titusville Fire Department and people in need. The couple own three Firehouse Subs restaurants located in Titusville, Rockledge and Indian Harbour Beach.
Meliany VanNostrand, owner of five Firehouse Subs restaurants in the Orlando area, provided 400 meals to feed the entire staff at Advent Health in East Orlando after hearing from a local nurse that most healthcare workers are too busy to eat lunch some days. “When I heard that our local healthcare workers were struggling to find time to take a break and eat a filling, flavorful meal, I knew we had to help,” said VanNostrand. “I called Advent Health in East Orlando the next day and asked what day is typically the busiest for them. We prepared and delivered meals to feed all of the nurses and doctors in the hospital that day. It’s the least we can do to thank the people who selflessly keep our communities safe.” Over 1,100 meals were donated from Firehouse Subs Franchisees Doug and Heather Hubbard to feed medical professionals at St. Cloud Regional, Advent Healthcare in St. Cloud, Advent Healthcare Celebration Hospital and deputies at the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department. The Hubbards own two restaurants in St. Cloud and Hunter’s Creek. Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has partnered with Firehouse Subs restaurants to feed tens of thousands of healthcare workers and first responders across the U.S. on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as individuals and families in need and seniors who are unable to leave their homes through the Foundation’s COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund. Throughout the month of April, all funds collected by Firehouse Subs restaurants through Round Up, canister donations and recycled pickle bucket donations will support immediate COVID-19 disaster relief efforts through the Foundation. Since March 18, this partnership has provided more than 39,000 meals to firefighters, police officers and healthcare workers, as well as individuals and families in need and seniors who are unable to leave their homes. Visit www.firehousesubs.com to find the closest restaurant and order online. Donations to support Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation’s relief efforts can be made at https://firehousesubsfoundation.org/donate/. CENTRAL FLORIDA MONTHLY
