ARTS & CULTURE T HE B E AC O N AN D C ODE WA LL - LA KE N O N A T O WN CEN T ER
At the heart of Lake Nona’s Town Center stands “The Beacon and Code Wall.” “The Beacon” is a six-story landmark that comes to life at night with a visual experience of video, music and interactive elements. Alongside stands “Code Wall,” installation of specialized dichroic glass with imagery and messages written in binary code. At night, “The Beacon” comes to life with a visual experience of video, music and interactive elements. Both pieces were designed in partnership by Lake Nona artist JEFRE. Likewise, “Code Wall” serves as a parking area and an interactive piece of visual art. For a fun learning experience, we invite visitors to interpret the binary code written in its dichroic glass while you’re here: simply look for the plaques that will assist you to read the binary around the wall. In the code, you’ll learn about the vision and purpose of Lake Nona—a community built to inspire.

EAST LAKE TOHO AN O U T DO O RSMA N ’S P A RA DISE
Prior to 1884, Lieutenant Colonel W. E. Cadman’s dream was that Lake Tohopekaliga would be dredged and Narcoossee would become an important shipping port with windows to the world. At that time, the lake came close to Highway 15. In 1882, Hamilton Disston’s dredging of the canal started on the Southport Canal, between Lake Toho and Lake Cypress. When that work was completed, attention was turned to the canal connecting Lake Toho to East Lake Tohopekaliga (East Lake Toho). That cut was finished in 1884. East Lake’s water level dropped 3 to 5 feet rapidly in one month when the dams holding the water between Lake Toho and East Lake were cut in 1884. These lowered lake levels made steamboat passage more difficult, meaning East Lake Toho would never be the major shipping port dreamed of. Shortly after, Hamilton Disston bought the reclaimed land. In 1885, a steamer, “The Colonist” was built for shipping and transportation by locals in the area. It was used between Narcoossee and Kissimmee until the Sugar Belt Railroad was extended. As the railroad tracks spread further, travel across land became faster and more efficient for people and goods. In 1910, the Corps of Engineers dropped the water table 27.5 feet, drying out much of the surrounding land, and many towns sprang up in Osceola County. Today, covering a staggering 11,968 Florida acres with a diameter of 5 miles, East Lake Tohopekaliga is the second largest lake in Osceola County. Only trailing its larger, sister-lake, Lake Tohopekaliga. East Lake Toho is part of the Upper Kissimmee River Chain of Lakes, which comprise the headwaters of the entire Everglade system. Three communities surround the lake: St. Cloud, Narcoosee and Runnymede. East Lake Tohopekaliga is part of the Central and Southern Florida (C & SF) Flood Control Project authorized by Congress in 1948, consisting of a series of lakes, water conservation areas, canals and levees. The South Florida Water Management District operates the C & SF project in accordance with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regulations. A series of canals along the Kissimmee River and the chain of Lakes control water levels and supply municipal water.

Water flows into East Lake Toho from Boggy Creek to the north, Lake Runnymede to the southeast and from Lakes Hart and Mary Jane to the north by way of Lake Ajay. Water from East Lake flows into Lake Tohopekaliga (also known as West Lake) through the non-navigable St. Cloud Lock Canal at the lake’s southwest shore. Boat access to East Lake Toho is available in the city of St. Cloud on Lakeshore Drive and at the East Lake Fish Camp ramps on the north side of the lake. East Lake Toho is beautiful beyond measure, and thousands of tourists flock to its shores here every year. Lake waters are exceptionally clear with visibilities between 7 and 9 feet. Outdoor activities are king, and you are sure to find a place to indulge your every whim. Chisholm Park, located three miles south of Narcoosee, has pavilions, public restrooms, picnic areas with grills, a playground to entertain the children, a volleyball pit, ball fields, a boat ramp and a wonderful sandy beach area. The Lake Front at St. Cloud, situated along the southern shore of East Lake Tohopekaliga, is another ideal area to take the family. Picnic tables, a boisterous playground area, sandy beach, walking paths, bike trails and a boat launching area perfectly complement the shiny green of the trees and the sparkling blue of the lake’s cool waters. If you want a one-of-a-kind experience at East Lake Tohopekaliga, go for an airboat ride. This unique and exhilarating way of seeing the lake will introduce you to various native flora and fauna. Glimpse fish beneath the boat, deer along the shores and alligators soaking up the warm rays while sunning. East Lake Toho will not disappoint fisherman looking for trophy fish either. Black crappie, bluegill, catfish, largemouth bass and red-ear sunfish are all known to bite at the lake, with bass being the most popular. You may choose to take your own boat, launched from a public boat ramp, or take a private charter for your fun day of fishing in the sun.
So, grab your sun screen and cooler and enjoy an amazing day on the lake!

HAR MONY PRESERVE
WEDDINGS & EVENTS TAKING YOU FROM “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” TO “I DO” What sets Harmony apart from other venues?
Tell us more about the B&B and the projected timeframe for opening.
Harmony Preserve is a unique venue due to its location. It is nestled among 260 acres of wildlife preserve land. No matter where you decide to host your event, you always feel close to nature. Harmony Preserve is home to Cat Lake, our most popular ceremony location. Majestic oak trees spring up from the bank of the lake creating an ethereal and majestic feel to the wooded area. This pristine natural wonder is truly a stunning backdrop.
Our current time frame for the Bed and Breakfast is to have it completed and operational before the end of 2019.
Harmony is located in East Osceola County, how accessible is it form Orlando? Located just south of Orlando, Harmony Preserve can be accessed via the Florida Turnpike and 417-Narcoossee Road. Melbourne and the East Coast is a short drive down Highway 192.
Tell us about the different locations throughout Harmony available for ceremonies and receptions. In addition to Cat Lake, couples can host their ceremony in our quaint outdoor courtyard complete with market lighting and pergola. Don’t worry about the time of year, in our courtyard the grass is always green…because it’s AstroTurf! Couples that are passionate about the sport have the option to say their nuptials on their favorite hole on the golf course! Receptions can be held in the courtyard or in our Grand Ballroom. The Grand Ballroom, which is currently being completely renovated will be the epitome of southern charm and elegance. Polished concrete floors, flowing white silk curtains, romantic chandeliers with crystal accents, towering mirrors adorning the walls.
Are there places for guest to stay on property overnight? Presently, the closest accommodations are within 10 miles from Harmony Preserve but we are in the works to have a Bed and Breakfast on property.
The Bridal Suite and Ballroom are also undergoing major high-end renovations. Can you tell us more about this? The bridal suite is also being completely renovated and will make every bride feel like a Queen. The bridal suite will have coordinating concrete floors, extended mirrors and updated LED lighting throughout the entire hair and makeup area. The lounge will be furnished with a luxurious blush colored velvet couch, ghost chairs and a chic cowhide rug and sit underneath a crystal chandelier. The attached bathroom is partial ADA accessible.
Does Harmony offer full service event planning? Harmony Preserve includes rehearsal and “day of” coordinating in our packages. We also offer Full Service Wedding Planning and coordinating at an additional cost that starts the day you book!
What is your favorite location on property for weddings and why? Our personal favorite location on property is Cat Lake. The niche in the woods that opens up to giant oaks with the breathtaking lake in the background is perfect. Then the light filters through the trees at sunset, the view is absolutely stunning.
What is a piece of advice you’d give to couples looking for the “perfect” wedding venue? Some advice for couples looking for the “perfect” venue would be to find a place that has the ability to transform into your vision. You don’t want a place that only offers one “style”. Harmony Preserve prides itself on being able to showcase a modern bride with the latest trends and then can be turned into a traditional and romantic theme the next day.

AWESOME SAUS PIZZA
DISH SERIES
Ingredients + Instructions 1.
Pull out your pizza dough and bring it to room temp. (store bought is ok for at home). Leave for a minimum of 2 hours before moving onto the next step.
2.
Pre-heat your oven as hot as it gets, place a pizza stone in the center of the oven on a rack. Let your oven pre-heat and heat the stone for 20 minutes before moving to the following step.
3.
You want to start with the dough at room temp., press the dough into the semolina and sprinkle with a little regular flour on top. Press the dough into a disk concentrating your presses on the outer edges of the dough, pick up the dough and make your hands into fists stretching along the edges. It is recommended to check online for a video of this as explaining through text will lose a lot of the finite details.
4.
16
Once you have your dough stretched into a shape you are happy with (the rounder the better), place it onto a semolina dusted “pizza peel”, you can also fashion one out of a piece of very heavy cardboard or an upside down baking tray. Once on the peel, shake it lightly, the dough should glide around.
CENTRAL FLORIDA MONTHLY
5. 6. 7.
Start with the tomato sauce straight in the middle of the dough, work it out towards the edges with a large spoon or ladle.
8. 9. 10.
Your intention is to center the pizza on the stone, don’t miss or you are cleaning the oven for 3 hours.
Evenly sprinkle on your cheese and likewise distribute the sausage, peppers, onions, mushrooms and sliced garlic. Jiggle the pizza peel, your pizza should move around on it slightly. open your oven, be careful, at about a 25 degree angle jiggle the peel back and forth while aiming for the back of the stone in the oven.
Bake on the highest setting for 7-10 minutes, check it at about 5, you may need to spin the pizza 180 degrees. Remove using tongs and slide it onto your cleaned peel. Let rest 2 minutes, finish with the salt and brush the crust with olive oil. Cut and serve.
