A Conversation with...Robert (Bob) Woollard Author: Aricia de Kempeneer As one of the lead organizers for the 2017 World Summit on Social Accountability, presented by The Network: TUFH, Dr. Robert (Bob) Woollard has lived and breathed social accountability throughout his career. From developing medical institutions based on socially accountable principles to co-chairing the Global Consensus on Social Accountability for Medical Schools (GCSA), Dr. Woollard has been instrumental in championing the cause around the globe. We caught up with Dr. Woollard after the World Summit to get his thoughts on the work that took place during the Summit and on what the future holds. Dr. Robert (Bob) Woollard

Why is this topic of social accountability so important in 2017 and why was it well placed in Tunisia? The fundamental base for social accountability is social justice. The world has become increasing inequitable and the social determinants of health are key in the health of a population. This World Summit provided a nice framework indicating how we can do something about that. Medical schools are most of the times wealthy, no matter the economic state of the country, and fairly influential. If we want to have an impact, we need to do it through medical schools. Secrets of Successful Fundraising… An Interview with Gustaaf Wolvaardt Author: Alberta Steans-Parsons and Faith Nawagi Secrets of Successful Fundraising - Fostering Social Accountability through Implementing Donor-Funded Projects How have you successfully raised funds? Give some points about - fostering social accountability through implementing donor funded projects? Fundraising is now an integral part of the work of all the senior managers in FPD, we actively develop the competency of selected managers, those are good writers, in proposal writing through a 12 month proposal writing fellowship, they are supported by a proposal support unit that continuously scan the environment for calls for proposals. We now annually submit around 200 proposals and have progressively increased our success rate to above 50%. To date we have raised in excess of US$ 350 million from more than 200 donors and funders.

Dr. Gustaaf Wolvaardt

Foundation for Professional Development

We have reinterpreted the three scholarships of higher education to entrench social accountability across all or work, teaching and learning is interpreted as "developing people” and most of our training programs are aimed at improving the ability of the health workforce to respond to priority health needs in our society. Board of Director’s Corner Greetings Network: TUFH Community, For close to 40 years, the Network: TUFH has been instrumental in the areas of community health and health professions education and policy. When I began this journey as Executive Director two years ago, one of my goals was (and still is) to help usher the organization into a new era and, through the Board of Directors, we are doing just that. From operating under a new governance structure to strengthening the organization’s relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Network: TUFH is better poised to tackle the critical challenges in our field and make our communities healthier and safer. But, the work of the Board is far from complete and we need your help—join a task force, help plan our 40th Anniversary Celebration, reach out to old members, or simply contact our office –we can surly use your help and expertise. Onward and upward!
