Dean Kelland uses performance, photography, film and period materials to explore representations of class and masculinity in British situation comedy. His residency will explore the idea of the sitcom as a social mirror in relation to three situation comedies of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s: Hancock’s Half Hour, Steptoe & Son, and Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?

Jochem Hendricks 18 January — 7 April 2013 Floor 3 Jochem Hendricks’ works are playful, challenging and provocative. They are often highly engaging on an aesthetic level, yet beneath the surface lie elaborate back-stories which frequently test the boundaries of ethics and morality. Artists have traditionally been masters of artifice and illusion and exactly how Hendricks engages with this tradition is open to interpretation. Like many conceptual artists, he encourages us to challenge the ways in which we view the world. Hendricks works in a wide variety of media, including sculpture, film, installation and more recently, painting. This exhibition offers an opportunity to view his artistic development from the late 1980s until the present day. This project is organised in collaboration with John Hansard Gallery, Southampton and Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich, Switzerland. Humankind has long been fascinated by animals, who in turn, have been subjected to research, collection, categorisation, documentation, display and experimentation. Each of the artists within the exhibition creates works which involve an intensive scrutiny of animals and nature as well as a critical engagement with the ways in which we have attempted to understand and control the natural world. Both Tessa Farmer and Polly Morgan will be creating brand new works for the exhibition.

Our creatures 26 April — 30 June 2013 Floor 3 As part of this project, artist Mark Fairnington has curated an historic exhibition which focuses on portraits of animals. Images and objects are brought together that depict in particular the domestic and local relationships between people and animals and show how these could be pragmatic, eccentric, brutal and loving.

This exhibition will bring together a diverse range of contemporary artists, who through their work, confront and challenge our attitudes towards the natural world, and in particular, the animal kingdom.

25 January — 28 April 2013 Floor 4 Students from Walsall College have come together to co-curate Let go of certainty, an exhibition inspired by some of the universal themes in Damien Hirst’s work, such as death, destruction, belief and rebirth. This powerful display features contemporary works drawn from the Gallery’s collections by Vidya Gastaldon, Phil Brooks, Christopher Le Brun, Dorothy Cross, Christian Marclay, Andrew Tift, Tom Ormond and Ron Mueck, among others. The Garman Ryan Collection Jacob Epstein and Damien Hirst Birth, Death and Religion Jacob Epstein and his work are central to the Garman Ryan Collection. During 2013 the collection acts as host for Damien Hirst’s work enabling visitors to view both artist’s work together.
The Epstein Mysteries App The New Art Gallery Walsall launches 'The Epstein Mysteries'. A fun way to explore some of the amazing stories about the Garman Ryan Collection and to discover more about the artists, the art works and the extraordinary people connected with them.

Spanning the two ends of the 20th century, these two great artists share many similarities. Both artists were and still are regarded as extreme innovators who shocked and scandalised both the art world and the general public with their artworks, challenging the attitudes and social conventions of their day. Though Jacob Epstein died in 1959 –six years before Damien Hirst was born– they both deal with the universal themes of life, birth, death and religion which have been the subject matter of artists for many centuries. The work they both produce around these interrelated concerns highlights the way that artistic practices have changed throughout the 20th century along with our social attitudes towards them. The selected works by Epstein in this exhibition drawn from Walsall’s collections highlight these themes.

In Conversation Saturday 23 February 2pm Jo Digger, Head of Collections, will talk about the life and work of Jacob Epstein and its relationship to the themes within Damien Hirst’s work. Free Talks introducing the Garman Ryan Collection take place every Wednesday and Saturday at 1pm.
Bob and Roberta Smith’s Epstein Archive Gallery was created after a 2 year residency with contemporary artists Bob and Roberta Smith. Working in collaboration with Archive Curator Neil Lebeter, they rifled through the letters, photographs and documents held in the Epstein Archive, creating new works and short films in response to what was found. Displaying contemporary art and archives side by side, Bob and Roberta Smith’s Epstein Archive Gallery showcases the extraordinary and tragic story of the Epstein-Garman family. The book of the project, How To Let An Artist Rifle Through Your Archives, is to be published in the summer.

Art Library & Archive The Writing Squad For Young Writers in Walsall
Saturday 2 Feb, 2 March, 6 April, 4 May. 10.30am–12pm The Art Library hosts a writing group for young people aged 8 to 12 who are interested in writing poems, plays, stories or songs! The Walsall Writing Squad will be led by professional writers and will include lots of fun writing activities and a chance to learn about being a writer. There is a total charge of £12 for the first 3 sessions or £5 per session if paid on the day. The Art Cart comes out every weekend and all school holidays to help you explore our collections. It has different free activities and moves somewhere new in the gallery every month.
Frisky Bags
These are rucksacks stuffed full of activities to help you explore around the gallery together as a family. Ask to borrow one for free from reception. Great for children 6-12 year olds.

DiSCO is a safe place for families to explore art together. You can touch, look, draw, play and create to help you understand the artworks on display. Dress up, design a 3d townscape or create some computer art.

Saturday 2 March, 11am–4pm £20 including materials. Inspired by the themes in Hirst works on display, in this workshop we will produce a hand cast and a life mask. Making impressions in alginate and casting in plaster, we will also look at a range of other mould making and casting materials including clay, latex, silicone, various types of plasters and resins. The session will cover all the basic elements of life casting, so is accessible to everyone from complete beginners to students and practising artists. This new 3-part course explores the links between contemporary art and historical art from the Renaissance right through to Modernism. The first session discusses the controversial work of Damien Hirst, where Hirst’s Trinity –Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology is on show at The New Art Gallery Walsall. The second session explores representations of gender and sexuality in works from the Barber’s collection challenging our ideas about femininity and masculinity. Finally, in session three you will visit Ikon to examine the finely detailed drawings of John Flaxman in the exhibition Line to Contour, whose practise involved intense academic study of the human form. Dead Day
Learn, have fun and celebrate the traditions and history of Sikh culture through a packed afternoon of interactive activities. Vaisakhi celebrates the birth of the Sikh nation which formed in 1699 and also celebrates the harvest in the PunJab in Northern India. Entertainment will include: Gidha Dance and Bhangra performed with live music by the best local and regional dancers and musicians. There will also be arts workshops, photography exhibition and displays. Join us for this free family day of arts and culture.
