Elizabeth Rowe, Old News (foam), 2014, Ink on newspaper Courtesy the artist
Elizabeth Rowe 12 January — 5 April 2015 Floor 1 Elizabeth Rowe has an art practice rooted in drawing and collage. Her drawings involve the use of pen, pencil, gel pens, ink and silkscreen printing to build layers of colour on photographs taken from broadsheet newspaper print and popular magazines. Her collages involve the careful selection of seemingly disparate found images sourced from women’s magazines, National Geographic volumes, and old books in the artist’s personal collection. The various collage components are assembled and reassembled incrementally, before being applied directly to a surface. Beginning with a period of research and experimentation in the studio, Rowe will use her residency to make a new work that will be applied directly onto a wall in the Garman Ryan hall. Watch Rowe’s work unfold in the gallery from 17 February – 5 April 2015. Elizabeth Rowe lives and works in Birmingham. In 2013, she was awarded a Turning Point West Midlands-funded residency at Dudmaston Hall, a National Trust Property in Shropshire. During 2014, Rowe has been making new work for an exhibition on the underground rail network in Lyon, France, supported by a Feeney Fellowship from the John Feeney Charitable Trust. www.elrowe.com

Martin Parr Black Country Stories 4 October 2014 — 11 January 2015 Floor 3 Over the last 4 years, Magnum photographer, Martin Parr, has created a photographic portrait and archive of life in the Black Country through photography, film and oral histories. Martin has made many visits to Walsall, Wolverhampton, Sandwell and Dudley, meeting a wide range of local people. He has visited shops and markets, places of worship, football grounds, factories, pubs and clubs, dances and parties, cafés and restaurants, dog training classes, summer fêtes and street parties celebrating the Royal Wedding and Diamond Jubilee. Four specially commissioned films offer a fascinating insight into Teddy Gray’s Sweet Factory in Dudley; the world of Black Country pigeon fancying; Stourbridge’s Tudor Crystal; and the coach holiday company JR Holyhead, based in Willenhall. Commissioned and produced by Multistory, working in partnership with The New Art Gallery Walsall and Wolverhampton Art Gallery with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

FOUND 30 January — 3 May 2015 Floor 3 FOUND brings together important works by a group of contemporary artists who work with found images. Transforming, cutting, or re-interpreting visual material sourced from the internet, magazines, old books, anonymous family albums and personal collections, the artists explore themes of loss, memorialisation, collective experience, and socially-constructed hierarchies concerning gender, race, religion, history and mass culture. Drawing attention to our relentless consumption and self-projection of visual information in a digital age, the selected works reverberate and bring into question the feeling of being suffocated and framed by representations of other people’s lives, tastes and experiences. FOUND includes in-depth presentations of work by Paul Chiappe, Vesna Pavlović, John Stezaker, Ruth Claxton and Ellen Gallagher and features new work specially commissioned by The New Art Gallery Walsall.

Sikander Pervez
4 December 2014 — 18 January 2015 Floor 4 The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to present this new work by South Korean artist Lee Bul which was commissioned jointly by The New Art Gallery Walsall, Birmingham Museums Trust and Ikon Gallery with support from the Art Fund as part of Art Fund International. This compelling sculptural work is suspended like a chandelier from the gallery ceiling, where its crystal, glass and acrylic beads play with the natural light to activate the space. The work is one of a series created by the artist that reflect on the failings of utopian optimism, as characterised by the architect Bruno Taut (1880-1938). Preview: 3 December 2014, 6-8pm
30 January — 19 April 2015 Floor 4 Sikander Pervez transforms mundane objects such as chairs, walls and plinths into poetic visual forms by challenging our perceptions of the usual functions associated with them. He will be creating a brand new sculptural installation for his first solo exhibition since graduating from Staffordshire University. Sikander was selected from New Art West Midlands 2014, the best of the graduates from West Midlands Universities for this significant development opportunity. Darren Banks The Raven
4 December 2014 – 26 April 2015 Floor 2
Churton Fairman Courtesy Mandy Fairman-Dick
Churton Fairman (1924-1997) - better known by his alias Mike Raven – had an extraordinary life. Starting out as an aspiring ballet dancer and photographer, he then became a pirate radio dj, pioneer of blues music and one of the first presenters on Radio One. He was also a horror movie actor, starring alongside the likes of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. In the 1970s he gave up his celebrity lifestyle and moved to Bodmin Moor in Cornwall to become a sheep farmer and wood carver. Fairman’s sculpture, which explored religious themes, was exhibited alongside work by Henry Moore and Jacob Epstein, and was well received and collected during his lifetime, but since then has been all but forgotten. Artist Darren Banks, who discovered he had a family connection to Churton Fairman and was intrigued by his life story, has recently created a body of work inspired by Fairman’s legacy. Banks’ practice examines the relationship between objects and film, so he was drawn to Fairman’s work as both a sculptor and and horror movie actor.

Our 2nd floor Garman Ryan temporary exhibition space will host a new installation by Banks, which will reference Fairman, alongside works by Epstein and Gaudier-Brzeska in our collection. The New Art Gallery has been gifted one of Churton Fairman’s sculptures, which will go on display for the first time in our Religion room as part of this exhibition.
The Clive Beardsmore Gift
Interventions in the Garman Ryan Galleries 4 December 2014 — December 2015 Floors 1 and 2 An Introduction to The Clive Beardsmore Collection 4 December 2014 — 15 March 2015 1st floor corridor The 2015 interventions into the Garman Ryan Collection will be a selection from a new substantial gift of artworks donated to The New Art Gallery by a private collector, Clive Beardsmore. Clive has a longstanding association with the Gallery, having early in his career served as an assistant to the then curator Michael Mosesson in the 1970s, at the time Walsall received Kathleen Garman’s gift. Throughout a career which has encompassed working as a town planner, lecturer, assistant curator, occasional artist’s model, and continues as a professional historical researcher, Clive has been a long-term supporter of the Gallery, and now his personal collection finds a permanent home here.

In such times of austerity, and with Walsall Council having to make huge savings over the next four years, we are indebted to this philanthropic act and delighted to receive such a generous donation to our Collections.
David Hockney, The Print Collector (Portrait of Felix Man), 1969, lithograph. Copyright the artist.
Twenty of the 200 works received will be presented as interventions throughout the first and second floor galleries in 2015, in the themed Garman Ryan rooms, featuring works on paper by leading Modern British Artists such as Edward Bawden, John Bratby, Laura Knight, Graham Sutherland and Keith Vaughan, all artists previously not represented in our collections. This Gift has enabled us to fill gaps and expand our holding of Modern British works in particular. There will also be an introduction to this Gift on the 1st floor corridor for three months, highlighting the different facets, and the personal nature of the collection and the relationship between private collector and artist. Preview: 3 December 2014, 6-8pm

A personal look at the Clive Beardsmore Collection Join Collections Curator Julie Brown to explore the personal side of The Clive Beardsmore Collection in the 1st floor corridor, looking at a selection of festive cards as this month’s Artworks of the Month. Saturday 24 January, 2pm David Hockney, The Print Collector Who is Clive Beardsmore? Who is the man represented in this print by David Hockney? Why collect art? Join Collections Curator Julie Brown, as she introduces The Clive Beardsmore Collection and takes a look at the January Artwork of the Month.
The Garman Ryan Collection The Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to the Borough of Walsall in 1973 by Lady Kathleen Epstein (nĂŠe Garman), widow of the great 20th century sculptor, Jacob Epstein. Kathleen was originally from Wednesbury and, although had spent most of her life in London, wanted to give something back to the Black Country where she had grown up. She had formed this important collection with her close friend, Sally Ryan, granddaughter of an American tycoon and talented sculptor in her own right, following the death of Epstein in 1959. Together they collected 365 important works, including those by renowned artists such as Van Gogh, Monet, Constable, Picasso, Degas and Matisse, as well as by friends and family members such as Epstein, Matthew Smith, Theo Garman and Lucian Freud, alongside artefacts from many cultures around the world. Works are displayed in the thematic groupings prescribed by Kathleen on her donation, which allows the opportunity to make unexpected links and comparisons across different cultures and centuries.
The Permanent Collection The New Art Gallery has an impressive Permanent Collection of approximately 3000 works, which have been collected since the foundation of the original art gallery in Walsall in 1892. As well as historic works and works with a particular resonance to Walsall, the Gallery retains a strong commitment to contemporary collecting, reflected in acquisitions made through the Contemporary Art Society Special Collection Scheme and Art Fund International, as well as collecting works from contemporary artists who have exhibited or had residencies at the Gallery.
