The New Art Gallery Walsall
is an internationally famous world class gallery on your doorstep. It’s a place for everyone. A 21st century building housing a modern and contemporary art permanent collection over 2 floors, a temporary exhibition programme over a further 2 floors, an interactive gallery, art library and roof terrace overlooking the regeneration and developments in Walsall.
The New Art Gallery Walsall is here for you and your group to explore. Visiting an art gallery helps pupils with different learning styles develop confidence, gives them an out of classroom learning experience to write about, helps them engage with the world and brings art to life. The New Art Gallery Walsall offers you and your pupils inspiration from world class art on display that provides stimulus for cross curricular learning and developing communication skills, problem solving, critical and contextual studies, creative thinking and personal learning.

Do you feel like an alien in an art gallery? Come along and meet our alien, find out how he feels and about the patterns on his skin. You can make some alien antennae for yourself, hear a story and make a badge. There are bugs everywhere you just need to look. Come and explore the gallery, find the bugs, hear a story and make your own bug to take around the gallery. Invoices for workshops are sent to the school after the workshop has taken place. Workshops cancelled within 2 weeks of the planned date incur the full cost of the workshop.
Pupils look, draw, explore and develop understanding about sculpture and its’ materials. Then create individual sculptures with mod roc. This workshop links well with work on portraits. Pupils explore, discuss, draw and then learn printmaking techniques inspired by the collection to create a two colour print. This workshop links well with most themes.
Landscapes
Learn about foreground, middleground and background and how your viewpoint changes what you see. Pupils then create their own 3d landscape box.
Vessels
Artist Days Schools can book workshops with artists at the gallery to create a bespoke programme. The workshops inspired by the gallery displays are negotiated between the artist and the school. Fees from £250 per day. Please contact the gallery for more information.
Exploring the shapes, volumes and patterns in the vessels on display pupils can construct their own 3d vessel from recycled materials.

Special Needs Schools
Any of the workshops and talks detailed can be booked for special needs groups. Contact us to discuss how we can meet the needs of your group. We can run talks that include touching the artworks and audio description. We use picture cards to aid explanations in practical workshops. Practical workshops for special needs groups are 50% of the full cost. Teachers - Continuous Professional Development
The gallery offers skill development and discussion sessions to inspire and use artwork in cross curricular study and classroom practice. These sessions help you gain confidence in art skills, understanding contemporary art and using an art gallery with your group. A session can be weekday, weekend or twilight. The Art Library is full of resources to accompany the gallery’s collections and exhibitions programme. The librarian can offer group introductions, informal talks about the library and support student research. Please phone in advance if you intend a whole class to use the library. Books – including art movements, architecture, exhibitions at the gallery and collection catalogues. Children’s books – introducing shape, colour, famous artists and stories.
Archives – documents, photographs and audio visual material about the building and the family behind the collections. You can access these by appointment. Access to these artefacts is being developed by the archivist and Bob and Roberta Smith, check out the website for an update on this project.
Gallery Shop A great range of the latest contemporary art books and teaching resources. Drop by and have a look on your visit. Souvenirs and pocket money toys are always available.

Borrow a set of clipboards for during your visit.
Suggested timetables
Download a suggested timetable for your group to spend time in the permanent or exhibition galleries. There are tasks as well as discussion questions. Ideal for KS3. Or ask us to help create a specific timetable for your group.

The gallery supports the Town Maths trail developed by Education Business Partnership.

Borrow a tray of modelling material for every pupil to model a sculpture in the gallery.
