Welcome To The New Art Gallery Walsall Designed by Caruso St John architects The New Art Gallery Walsall opened in February 2000 in the heart of Walsall town centre. Our renowned Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to the Borough in 1973 by Kathleen Garman, widow of the great 20th century sculptor Jacob Epstein. Kathleen was originally from nearby Wednesbury, and although she had spent much of her life in London, wanted to give something back to the Black Country where she had grown up. The Collection includes 365 important works by celebrated artists including Epstein, Van Gogh, Monet, Constable, Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Lucian Freud, alongside a wide range of artworks from across the world. Our Permanent Collection, formed in 1892, has over 3000 works, from Victorian genre paintings to contemporary installations. The changing exhibition programmes focus on the very best in international contemporary art and our Artists’ Studio and Artist Development programmes support artists from across the region. Our education and events programme provides a broad cultural experience for everyone.

2 February — 6 May 2018 Boyd & Evans, Vija Celmins, Ralph Fleck, Noémie Goudal, Scarlett Hooft Graafland, Esther Johnson, Richard Long, Ben Rivers, Hiraki Sawa, Emma Stibbon. As part of a season of exhibitions exploring the theme of wilderness, The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to present paintings, drawings, photographs and film works by a group of artists whose works engage with the natural world and
our innate need for solitude, peace and open space. From barren high-altitude salt deserts and snow-blanketed mountain tops to environments in transition such as coastlines and volcanos, the artists bring into view the truly wild places on our planet. Film works by Ben Rivers and Esther Johnson focus on marginal individuals who have chosen to move away from society, living precarious existences in remote places where nature rules.
In Conversation Thursday 15 March, 6.30-8pm, talk starts 7pm prompt, £5 An opportunity to watch Hinterland (2002) by Esther Johnson, followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker, Wilderness curator, Zoë Lippett and Steven Bode, Director of Film and Video Umbrella. Johnson’s film focuses on a community living on the Holderness coast, the fastest eroding coastline in the UK. Book your place in advance by calling the Gallery on 01922 654400.
2 February — 6 May 2018 To coincide with Wilderness, we are delighted to present a selection of works by acclaimed Latvian-American artist Vija Celmins (b. 1938) drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection. Celmins’s densely layered drawings and prints engage with the natural world; the surface of the ocean, expanses of desert, a spider’s web or star-filled night sky. Her images prompt questions around representation, perception and human experience and remind us of the complexity of the simplest things we observe in nature. Preview Thursday 1 February, 6-8pm All welcome.
The ARTIST ROOMS touring programme is delivered by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate in a partnership with Ferens Art Gallery until 2019, supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, by Art Fund and by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland. Stargazing Party Tuesday 27 February, 6pm-8pm To celebrate the Gallery’s 18th birthday this February, we are holding a special Stargazing Party. We especially welcome all those turning 18 in 2018. See Events page for further details.

20 February — 13 May 2018
Mike Nelson is known for his installations, which often take the form of extended labyrinths; immersive environments that involve the viewer. Lionheart, 1997/8 consists of junk materials painstakingly collected from specific locations by the artist and assembled to create a fictional drifter’s camp, complete with skins, traps, darts, trophies and beer cans. The work has been re-constructed by Nelson especially for this exhibition, Preview Thursday 1 February, 6-8pm Join us in the company of the artist All welcome
providing a rare opportunity to see an early work by the British artist, whose installations usually only exist for the time period of the exhibition they were made for. Mike Nelson represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2011. Lionheart was purchased for the Gallery’s Permanent Collection in 2002 via the Contemporary Art Society Special Collection Scheme, an important seven-year collecting initiative (1998 2005), which enabled 15 regional museums to collect significant works by leading contemporary artists.
In Conversation Thursday 8 February, 6.30 – 8pm, £5 Mike Nelson will give a special talk about his work. Limited places, book in advance by calling the Gallery on 01922 654400.
Leah Carless works with sculpture to explore ideas around making and materiality and the emotional qualities we attach to physical objects and processes. Her practice involves the investigation of notions of physicality in contemporary society; in particular, what it might mean to have a fleshy body in a consumer culture saturated by visual imagery. Leah will use her residency to develop a number of silicone membranes, employing traditional sculptural materials as well as materials relating to everyday health and beauty products found in supermarkets.
Through these works, she will explore and reveal the hidden processes involved by using materials in both solid and fluid states. She will also develop the spatial dynamics involved with their presentation. Leah Carless (b. 1982) works between Birmingham and London. She graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA Sculpture in 2016 and was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries. Recent exhibitions include Steppes, 2017, Two Queens, Leicester; I’m Every Woman, 2016, KH7, Aarhus, Denmark; Left to Right, 2016, Copperfield Gallery, London and SWEAT, 2016, Camden Arts Centre, London.

Opens 17 March
We are privileged to be the first venue of 2018 to exhibit Hans Holbein’s A Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling, as the centrepiece in our Family Gallery. Shown alongside are complementary works from our Permanent Collection encompassing key collections themes Portraits and Animals and Birds.
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of our Permanent Collection in 2017, we invited the public to vote for their favourite works for a People’s Choice exhibition. The winners from each of our collection themes can be found in the temporary exhibition room on Floor 2, with a trail of the subsequent most popular works presented throughout our themed gallery spaces, alongside works from our Garman Ryan Collection. A Victorian style hang in our Main Hall presents an array of more favourites, showing the depth and variety of our collecting since 1892.
The 2018 annual Collections galleries re-hang focuses on individual artists who each have a distinct body of work within our Permanent Collection. Each of our themed collection rooms will feature multiple works from a single contemporary artist, alongside highlights from our renowned Garman Ryan Collection. Artists from our Permanent Collection represented include Frank Auerbach, Rachel Goodyear, Chantal Joffe and George Shaw.
A recent acquisition to our Permanent Collection, Cornelia Parker’s print series Thirty Pieces of Silver will be on display in our Floor 2 temporary exhibition space, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy. Parker, who graduated from Wolverhampton Polytechnic, was elected a Royal Academician in 2010. In this body of work Parker has re-appropriated a group of found glass photographic negatives of antique silverware, continuing her interest in objects and their histories, the material of silver, and the medium of photography.

Andrew Tift is a figurative artist specialising in portraiture. Having grown up in Walsall, where he still lives, Andrew has continued to find inspiration through the Gallery’s collections and exhibitions. Regular visitors will be familiar with many of his works including his extraordinary portraits of Kitty Garman. recent experimental works. Consistent throughout all of his work is a fascination with people, exquisite attention to detail, a connection with art and artists of the past and considerable technical skills. This exhibition will celebrate the artist’s work to date and demonstrate the breadth of his recent practice. A publication will accompany the exhibition with an essay by Charlotte Mullins.
In September 2016, Mahtab Hussain travelled to Kashmir; to the place where his parents had once called home. He was able to meet members of his family for the first time, including his great grandmother, and to witness the kind of life he may have lived, had history taken a different turn. Born and raised in Glasgow in the 1980s, Mahtab Hussain, like many others, experienced racism and discrimination. He was frequently made to feel like he did not belong in Britain yet he knew no other home. Now living in the British Midlands, Preview Thursday 24 May, 6-8pm All welcome
Mahtab has developed an artistic practice which reflects on ideas of homeland, race, identity and cultural difference. This exhibition presents a powerful and poetic reflection on ideas of home; of belonging and displacement. It also represents a deeply emotional personal journey of discovery and offers a revealing insight into the people and the landscapes of Kashmir. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication published by Ikon Gallery and supported by the British Council. It includes texts by Jonathan Watkins, Frank Uekötter, Josiah McNeil and Mahtab Hussain.
