Welcome To The New Art Gallery Walsall Designed by Caruso St John architects The New Art Gallery Walsall opened in February 2000 in the heart of Walsall town centre. Our renowned Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to the Borough in 1973 by Kathleen Garman, widow of the great 20th century sculptor Jacob Epstein. Kathleen was originally from nearby Wednesbury, and although she had spent much of her life in London, wanted to give something back to the Black Country where she had grown up. The Collection includes 365 important works by celebrated artists including Epstein, Van Gogh, Monet, Constable, Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Lucian Freud, alongside a wide range of artworks from across the world. Our Permanent Collection, formed in 1892, has over 3000 works, from Victorian genre paintings to contemporary installations. The changing exhibition programmes focus on the very best in international contemporary art and our Artists’ Studio and Artist Development programmes support artists from across the region. Our education and events programme provides a broad cultural experience for everyone.

Andrew Tift immortalise 25 May — 2 September 2018 The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to present a major solo exhibition by Walsall artist Andrew Tift. The exhibition will bring together brand new works combined with selected works from the artist’s past practice and will comprise paintings, drawings, sketchbooks and for the first time, a series of photographs. Focusing around the genre of portraiture, it is a consciously eclectic show bringing together works ranging from more formal commissioned portraits and personal projects with specifically chosen sitters to more experimental work, in which the artist has challenged himself, pushing the boundaries of portraiture and reflecting on enduring themes such as the cycle of life, the passing of time and the persistence of memory. This exhibition celebrates the artist’s work to date and demonstrates the breadth and quality of his practice.
Preview Thursday 24 May, 6-8pm All welcome.

Mahtab Hussain Going back home to where I came from 25 May — 2 September 2018 In September 2016, Mahtab Hussain travelled to Kashmir; to the place where his parents had once called home. He was able to meet members of his family for the first time, including his great grandmother, and to witness the kind of life he may have lived, had history taken a different turn. Born and raised in Glasgow in the 1980s, Mahtab Hussain, like many others, experienced racism and discrimination. He was frequently made to feel like he did not belong in Britain yet he knew no other home. Hussain has developed an artistic practice which explores ideas of homeland, race, identity and cultural difference. This exhibition presents a powerful and poetic reflection on ideas of home; of belonging and displacement. It also represents a deeply emotional personal journey of discovery and offers a revealing insight into the people and the landscapes of Kashmir. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication published by Ikon Gallery and supported by the British Council. It includes texts by Jonathan Watkins, Frank Uekötter, Josiah McNeil and Mahtab Hussain. It is available in the Gallery Shop for £20.
Mahtab Hussain Mitti Ka Ghar 25 May 2018 — 24 February 2019 This exhibition will extend from Mahtab Hussain’s Floor 3 exhibition Going back home to where I came from and will include a wealth of opportunities to engage with over the summer . Preview Thursday 24 May, 6-8pm All welcome. In Conversation Wednesday 18 July, 6.30 – 8pm, £3. Mahtab Hussain will talk about his work with writer, curator and artist, David Campany. Please book a place by calling 01922 654400. A Collaboration with Grain and Redeye.

COLLECTION EXHIBITIONS
Artists in Focus Until 2 December 2018 This year’s display from the Permanent Collection looks at 10 individual contemporary artists who each have a distinct body of work, related to one of the key collection themes. This is presented as a trail through the Floor 1 and 2 galleries. Included are recent acquisitions by Chantal Joffe, bright pastel drawings of her daughter and friends which are placed in the context of our Children room; prints by George Shaw based on his painstaking studies of the council estate where he grew up in Coventry; and a series of thought-provoking drawings by Robert Priseman, representing locations of mass school shootings in America.

EXHIBITIONS
Grace A Williams Intermission 10 August — 11 November 2018 Grace A Williams uses found and archival footage to explore feminist power dynamics in the history of magic, mythology and film. Intermission is a two-screen projection focused on the gaze of two unknown black men whose enigmatic portraits appear on nineteenth century photographic slides found by the artist. The images appear as artefacts of ethnographic portraiture, highlighting the role of the camera in colonial ‘othering’; a position frequently attributed to the feminine. Williams’ hand tinting of the found images references the role of women as colourists and ‘ink and paint girls’ in photographic and cinematic histories, while the use of dual screens traces early film, where an intermission signalled a physical break in footage as well as a moment of awakening in the audience. A limited edition C-type print by Grace A Williams is available in the Gallery Shop.

Hetain Patel Don’t Look at the Finger 22 June — 29 July 2018 Don’t Look at the Finger is a major new moving-image work by artist Hetain Patel. The film follows a ceremonial encounter between a man and a woman, within a grand architectural setting. The characters communicate through a feat of choreography that draws on martial arts and signed languages to express a ritualistic coming together. Shot with production values that emulate Hollywood films, it features specially designed costumes and an original soundtrack by composer Amy May. Commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella with Manchester Art Gallery and QUAD, Derby. Supported by Arts Council England. Initial research supported by Jerwood Choreographic Research Project.

The Building as Material II 11 June — 25 August 2018 The New Art Gallery Walsall was designed by Caruso St John as an inspirational piece of architecture for Walsall. To mark the building’s 18th birthday earlier this year, the Gallery invited proposals from West Midlands-based artists in response to the theme: The Building as Material. Artists were asked to consider the raw materials and physical identity of the building as well as the concept of the Gallery as a ‘big house’ to be explored and discovered. From this Open Call, one artist will be selected for a residency in the Gallery's 1st Floor Artists' Studio this summer. The successful artist will produce a focused body of work inspired by the architecture, which will be shared via a public event and documented as part of an ongoing archive of building residencies.
