Welcome To The New Art Gallery Walsall Designed by Caruso St John architects The New Art Gallery Walsall opened in February 2000 in the heart of Walsall town centre. Our renowned Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to the Borough in 1973 by Kathleen Garman, widow of the great 20th century sculptor Jacob Epstein. Kathleen was originally from nearby Wednesbury, and although she had spent much of her life in London, wanted to give something back to the Black Country where she had grown up. The Collection includes 365 important works by celebrated artists including Epstein, Van Gogh, Monet, Constable, Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Lucian Freud, alongside a wide range of artworks from across the world. Our Permanent Collection, formed in 1892, has over 3000 works, from Victorian genre paintings to contemporary installations. The changing exhibition programmes focus on the very best in international contemporary art and our Artists’ Studio and Artist Development programmes support artists from across the region. Our education and events programme provides a broad cultural experience for everyone.

CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS | FLOOR 3
Legacies: JMW Turner and contemporary art practice 22 September 2017 — 14 January 2018 JMW Turner, Christopher Le Brun, Cornelia Parker, Gerry Fox, Idris Khan, Susan Hiller, Bob and Roberta Smith, John Smith, Elizabeth Magill, Dorothy Cross, Jonathan Wright. The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to present a major exhibition considering the legacy of JMW Turner through the lens of contemporary art, highlighting the ongoing relevance of his work for artists practising today. A master of history, landscape and marine painting, Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) challenged accepted conventions in art, often shocking his contemporaries with his innovative techniques and candid portrayal of the modern world. Tate is home to the largest collection of Turner’s works in the world and almost all of the works accepted by the nation as part of the 1856 Turner Bequest. Legacies will present a selection of oil paintings, sketchbooks and watercolours from the Turner Bequest, alongside work by contemporary artists who have made work after Turner or evoke Turnerian subjects and themes in their art. Considered together, these works provide an interesting context in which to consider the impact of one of England’s most celebrated painters on the course of British art.
Preview Thursday 21 September, 6-8pm. All welcome.
The exhibition includes Turner’s first exhibited oil, Fisherman at Sea, 1796, along with two 200-year diagrams, which the artist created to illustrate his lectures as Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy. Legacies also provides a rare opportunity to see Cornelia Parker’s Room for Margins, 1998, an installation comprising six canvas liners and five sets of canvas tacking edges, removed by conservators in the 1950s and 1960s from paintings by Turner in Tate’s collection. Re-purposed by Parker, the damaged liners and edges are revealed as precious objects of beauty in their own right. Two newly commissioned works by Dorothy Cross and Jonathan Wright also spotlight aspects of Turner’s life and work, specifically his extensive travels and relentless recording of social change. Legacies is presented as part of a threeyear partnership with Tate involving major loans from the Tate collection to exhibitions at The New Art Gallery Walsall. To coincide with the exhibition, Jonathan Wright has produced two limited edition prints inspired by Turner, Star and Empire – Tower, each in edition of 25 and available from the Gallery Shop priced £150.

CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS
Barbara Nicholls Sedimentary Flow Until 19 November 2017 Barbara Nicholls' monumental watercolour works emerge by manipulating the behaviour of pigment in ever-increasing quantities of water. "Nicholls has followed the idiosyncrasies in the behaviour of her materials and has orchestrated them into resonant shapes that, while never declaring themselves in any specific identity, nonetheless touch collective memories of the experience of natural spaces, of the landscape. In that way, she formulates a new reality. Martin Holman In Conversation Saturday 11 November, 2pm Join the artist and Deborah Robinson, Head of Exhibitions for an informal tour of the exhibition. Wanting to Say Finding a Place in the Past
Until 25 February 2018
From 13 October 2017
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of our Permanent Collection in 2017, we invited the public to vote for their favourite works for the annual re-display of our Collections Galleries. A special Winners Room, of the most popular works from each of our collection themes, can be found on Floor 2, with a trail of the subsequent most popular works presented throughout our themed gallery spaces, alongside works from our Garman Ryan Collection. A Victorian style hang in our Main Hall presents an array of more favourites, showing the depth and variety of our collecting since 1892. Come and see if your choice is on display!
In the Long Gallery on Floor 1, this exhibition launches the Midlands Art Papers online research resource, developed by the Department of Art History, Curating and Visual Studies at the University of Birmingham. This project aims to develop new research, unearth hidden histories, and make links between the wealth of material in the region’s public art collections. This display uses Walsall’s Permanent Collection, presenting works which reference storytelling, history, memory and identity.

of Scotland. Celmins’s densely layered drawings and prints engage with the natural world, in particular nature’s surfaces and skies, prompting questions around representation, perception and human experience. On Floor 4, there will also be a rare opportunity to see Mike Nelson's 1997 installation, Lionheart from the Gallery's Permanent Collection. With this work, Nelson creates a fictional drifter's camp, providing an immersive and visually-arresting environment for the viewer to walk within.

ARTISTS’ STUDIO | FLOOR 1
Adam Grüning 17 October — 17 December 2017 Adam Grüning works with installation, photography and video to explore the relationship between authentic and inauthentic experience and notions of value and spectacle. His still-life photographs refer to idealised home and office interiors and the stock imagery he encounters in his design day job. Grüning is interested in modes of display and the often incongruous way in which objects are paired in commercial imagery to suggest particular narratives and lifestyles. His works re-appropriate and subvert such images, highlighting the gap between digital and real life environments. Adam will use his residency to produce new photographs and an artist book, taking the format, style and illustrations of The Studio Year Book as a starting point. This annual illustrated magazine of decorative art was printed from 1893 -1964, before being absorbed into Studio International. Illustrations of modern interiors dating to the late 1950s and early ‘60s from books housed in the Gallery’s Art Library will provide a focus, along with catalogues containing aspirational lifestyle imagery. Drop-in open studio event: Saturday 11 November, from 1pm An opportunity to view the artist's printed sourced material and work in progress.
