Welcome To The New Art Gallery Walsall Designed by Caruso St John architects, The New Art Gallery Walsall opened in February 2000 in the heart of Walsall town centre. Our renowned Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to the Borough in 1973 by Kathleen Garman, widow of the great 20th century sculptor Jacob Epstein. Kathleen was originally from nearby Wednesbury, and although she had spent much of her life in London, she wanted to give something back to the Black Country where she had grown up. The Collection includes 365 important works by celebrated artists including Epstein, Van Gogh, Monet, Constable, Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Lucian Freud, alongside a wide range of artworks from across the world. Our Permanent Collection, formed in 1891, has over 3000 works, from Victorian genre paintings to contemporary installations. The changing exhibition programmes focus on the very best in international contemporary art and our Artists’ Studio and Artist Development programmes support artists from across the region. Our education and events programme provides a cultural experience for everyone.

CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS

Jan Vanriet The Music Boy Until 8 May 2016 Jan Vanriet is a hugely influential painter and poet from Belgium. He has exhibited widely across the world, representing his country in the biennials of São Paulo, Venice and Seoul yet this is his first exhibition in the UK. Much of his work is rooted in his family history. His parents met in the Mauthausen concentration camp and their stories and memories of the Second World War and its aftermath continue to influence his paintings. Themes of love, loss, identity,

destiny and disappearance pervade his work. Yet there is also an inherent playfulness and lightness of touch and an evident mastery of the medium of paint. The Music Boy is a polyptych of four paintings depicting his grandmother and uncle – his mother’s twin brother – playing the accordion as a boy before the war. Jan Vanriet was born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1948. He lives and works in Antwerp.

Laura Lancaster Until 8 May 2016 Laura Lancaster is a painter who draws inspiration from forgotten and discarded photographs and home movies, found in flea markets, charity shops and through ebay. Once precious and significant to someone, they are now detached from their original contexts and instead, they become animated through Laura’s luscious, gestural and expressive application of paint. These lost and dislocated souls, caught in the ambiguous space between figuration and abstraction, compel us to reflect on time, memory and loss.

In Conversation Saturday 12 March 2016, 2pm Join the artist for a tour of the exhibition. Free, all welcome

This exhibition will bring together a range of works by the artist including a new series of diptychs which are drawn from the very first and last frames of found Super 8mm home movies. With the inclusion of sprocket holes and marks on the film, the paintings are portraits of the medium of film as much as their subject matter. The juxtaposition of the first and last frames implies the passing of time through the lost narrative that binds these moments together. Laura Lancaster was born in Hartlepool in 1979 and she lives and works in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Land, Sea and Air 27 May — 4 September 2016 Maps have continued to provide a potent source material for artists for many years. They provide attempts to make sense of a world that is ever in transformation, whether in terms of physical manifestations such as valleys, rivers and canyons; or blurred or contested borders, betraying evidence of conflict, resistance, negotiation and power. For others, maps serve to support a sense of identity or an engagement with a specific time and place. Maps can be used to communicate Preview Thursday 26 May, 6-8pm All welcome

a myriad of information. However, the focus for this exhibition will be on land, sea and air, bringing together bodies of work by artists that are varied in approach and whose works span a period of over forty years. Together, they reflect on the personal, the poetic and the political. Artists include Frank Bowling, Tiffany Chung, Agnes Denes, Tania Kovats and Cornelia Parker.

ARTISTS’ STUDIO

Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary Caglar Kimyoncu Until 27 March 2016 The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to be hosting the 2015-16 Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary, an annual residency established by disability-led arts organisation, Shape, to support mid-career disabled artists to develop their practice and profile. This year’s recipient, digital and video artist Caglar Kimyoncu, will use the bursary to extend his research into the issue of the militarisation of youth and provide a

space for those voices he identifies to be excluded or marginalised in society. His residency is informed by his perspective as a disabled person and background as the son of a professional soldier.

Artist introduction and film screening Saturday 6 February, 2-3pm Join Caglar as he opens out his residency ideas for consultation with a screening of his film, COnscription (2013).

Open studio sharing event Saturday 5 March, 2-4pm, drop-in Caglar will share audio bites and film clips gathered from his research in Walsall.
