Artists' Studio They Are Here 14 October — 20 December 2013 They Are Here is a collective practice steered by Harun Morrison and Helen Walker. The duo have worked together since 2005, often extending their collaboration to include others in the development of an artwork or its delivery. They Are Here’s works can be read as a series of games that offer alternative ways of engaging with a situation, history or ideology.

They Are Here will use the Artists’ Studio to extend their ongoing enquiry into personal, collective and institutional memory, taking the Garman Ryan Collection as a starting point for the creation of new work. Drawing on the history of certain objects, the duo will explore the idea of ‘lost’, forgotten and damaged works, coming together with Gallery audiences to consider the more specific and personal ways that loss might be manifested. Look out for an invitation to interact with They Are Here during the months of November and December. theyarehere.net Artists’ Studio event Saturday 26 October, 2pm Join Harun Morrison and Helen Walker for an introduction to the practice of They Are Here.

The New Art Gallery, in partnership with Turning Point West Midlands and other partners, delivers a programme of studio visits, business development workshops, events and residences to help support artists in the region.

Ged Quinn 9 October 2013 — 5 January 2014 Floor 3 The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to present a major solo exhibition of paintings by Ged Quinn. The exhibition will survey Quinn’s practice over the last four years, bringing together paintings from private collections in Europe and America as well as a brand new body of work created especially for this project. The exhibition will testify to the breadth of the artist’s practice and will include landscapes, portraits and still lifes, resplendent in references to history, myth and popular culture from across and through time. Although Quinn has shown extensively in Europe and America, this will be his first major solo exhibition in a public gallery in the UK since Tate St Ives in 2004 and Tate Liverpool as part of the 2008 Liverpool Biennial. A substantial publication accompanies the exhibition with texts by Michael Bracewell and Dr Brian Dillon as well as colour reproductions of all works exhibited. The publication is co-published with Stephen Friedman Gallery, London and supported by Walsall Museums and Art Galleries Development Trust.

Chiharu Shiota 17 January – 30 March 2014 Floor 3 In January 2014, The New Art Gallery Walsall will present a major solo exhibition by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota. The exhibition will comprise two epic, spectacular and poetic site-specific installations as well as drawings and videos by the artist. Chiharu Shiota frequently uses found objects within her sculptural installations, particularly those that resonate with personal and emotional histories. Doors and windows from demolished and derelict buildings, clothing, shoes, old furniture and vintage suitcases are frequent motifs within her work. Such objects evoke powerful and emotive human stories of journeys, of migration, of love and loss.

Damien Hirst, He Tried to Internalise Everything, 1992-1994, Glass, steel, silicone rubber, Formica, MDF, chair, general anaesthetic machine and gas cylinders, 84 x 84 x 228 in (2134 x 2134 x 5791 mm). Damien Hirst He Tried to Internalise Everything, 1992-1994 Until 23 November 2013 Floor 4 He Tried to Internalise Everything is from Damien Hirst’s 1990s series Internal Affairs, a group of glass-walled cells containing everyday objects such as tools, clothing and furniture arranged in scenes that suggest a human presence. Hirst took his title from a 1990 crime-thriller film in which a Los Angeles police department set up an independent body to examine their own affairs. In this installation, medical objects - an anaesthetiser and two gas cylinders containing a medical stimulant and suppressant - become metaphors for states of mind and the split personality of a modern man whose mood swings have been manipulated by modern science. On loan from Arts Council Collection, He Tried to Internalise Everything is the last in a series of satellite exhibitions to accompany a large display of works by Damien Hirst, on show throughout the Garman Ryan Galleries until 27 October as part of ARTIST ROOMS On Tour.

Chris Clinton Dead Media 17 January — 6 April 2014 Floor 4 Chris Clinton uses familiar objects and reclaimed materials to create artworks that refer obliquely to contemporary popular culture and our disregard for outdated media. This exhibition will bring together the artist’s full series of paper-coil dartboards for the first time, alongside a new sculpture spectacularly realised using multiple reels of VHS magnetic tape. Sourcing his rare, novelty dartboards from internet auction sites, Clinton painstakingly unwraps the coiled paper before reforming the dartboard to reveal colourful concentric circles and geometric patterns. The references to Hollywood films, comic books, cartoons or consumer brands visible in the original dartboard image are completely destroyed in the re-wrapping process, reminding us of the fleeting lifespan of novelty items.

40 Permanent Collection Gems

To celebrate the Ruby Anniversary of the Garman Ryan Collection 16 November 2013 — 16 November 2014 Floors 1 and 2 This series of year long interventions into the Garman Ryan Collection has been selected by our fantastic Front of House team. They had the opportunity to go ‘behind the scenes’ and delve into the Collection Store to find out more about the Permanent Collection and choose their favourite works to be brought out on display. Members of the team on duty in the galleries will be happy to tell you more about the project and the works they selected. There is a diverse range of work on display, from a collage made by Dean Kelland following his Artist Residency at the Gallery in 2013; to a new sculpture acquisition by Damien Hirst’s fellow YBA Angus Fairhurst; and old favourites such as the portrait of Sergeant Major William Purvis; along with contemporary visitor favourites such as Peter Calleson’s Dead Angels.

The 40 works reflect the 40th Anniversary of the opening of the Garman Ryan Collection in 2014. The Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to the people of Walsall by Lady Kathleen Epstein, and first went on display in July 1974 on the first floor reference room of Walsall Library. In line with Kathleen’s wishes the works are displayed in themed rooms, and the interventions complement these themes.

their skill in the medium of mezzotint, for which they won many international print prizes.

In 1968 Dorothea Wight founded the Studio Prints workshop in London. For the next four decades, along with her partner Marc Balakjian, they collaborated with a number of leading modern British artists such as Julian Trevelyan, Anthony Gross, William Turnbull, Celia Paul, Frank Auerbach and Lucian Freud.

This exhibition acts as a retrospective for Dorothea, who sadly passed away in May 2013, and celebrates the couple’s contribution to 20th century British printmaking.

This two part exhibition brings together a selection of the work produced at Studio Prints for other artists, as well as presenting the distinct work of Dorothea Wight and Marc Balakjian. Exhibiting their work together for the first time, it highlights

George Grosz The Big NO 2 January — 16 March 2014 Floor 1 George Grosz (1893-1959) was one of the greatest satirical artists of the 20th century. A co-founder of the Berlin Dada group and a revolutionary in the 1920s, he made hundreds of drawings depicting the vices and injustices of a society on the brink of economic and moral collapse. This exhibition will feature works from his two most powerful series; Ecce Homo from 1923 and Hintergrund of 1928. These portfolios were originally published by the left-wing publisher Malik Verlag. Born from the same society that inspired Christopher Isherwood's 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin (on which the musical and film Cabaret was based), these drawings present a caustic view of Germany in the traumatic years of the struggling Weimar Republic. The Big NO derives its title from George Grosz's autobiography A Little Yes and a Big No.

The Garman Ryan Collection

Art Library & Archive

The Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to Walsall in 1973 by Kathleen Garman, the widow of the renowned sculptor Jacob Epstein. It features 365 works by a range of important artists, such as Epstein, Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Lucian Freud. This collection is on permanent display on our 1st and 2nd floor galleries. We also hold an Epstein Archive, featuring letters, photographs and documentation from the Garman and Epstein family history, and continue to collect work with links to this important collection.

The Art Library is a resource open to everyone with free Internet access, a large range of art books, exhibition catalogues, magazines and art education resources. Members of staff can help with any specific queries relating to the Gallery’s Collection and Exhibitions.

The Permanent Collection

40th Anniversary Appeal

The New Art Gallery also has an impressive Permanent Collection, featuring a range of works collected by the Gallery since 1892, when it was founded to provide culture for the citizens of Walsall. As well as many historic works, the Gallery has a strong commitment to contemporary collecting, reflected in purchases made through schemes such as the Contemporary Art Society Special Collection Scheme and Art Fund International, and in the acquisition of new works from artists who have exhibited or had residencies at the Gallery.

We would like to hear from anyone who remembers the opening of the Garman Ryan Collection in 1974 and would like to share their memories and stories from that time. Or anyone with a connection to the Garman Ryan Collection, in the lead up to a special 40th Anniversary exhibition, which will take place in July 2014, 40 years since the Collection was first viewed by the public in Walsall. Jacob Epstein and Damien Hirst Birth, Death and Religion Until 27 October 2013 Spanning the two ends of the 20th century, these two artists share many similarities. Many of their innovative works were considered shocking and scandalous on their inception, and they challenged the attitudes and social conventions of their time, in dealing with universal themes, such as birth, death and religion.
