Welcome To The New Art Gallery Walsall The New Art Gallery Walsall opened in February 2000 in the heart of Walsall town centre. Our renowned Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to the Borough in 1973 by Kathleen Garman, widow of the great 20th century sculptor Jacob Epstein. Kathleen was originally from nearby Wednesbury, and although she had spent much of her life in London, she wanted to give something back to the Black County where she had grown up. The Collection includes 365 important works by celebrated artists including Epstein, Van Gogh, Monet, Constable, Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Lucian Freud, alongside a wide range of artworks from throughout the world. Our Permanent Collection has a range of over 3000 works, from Victorian genre paintings to contemporary installations. The changing exhibition programmes focus on the very best in international contemporary art and our Artists’ Studio and Artist Development programmes support artists from across the region. Our education and events programme provides a broad cultural experience for everyone.

CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS

Mat Collishaw, All Things Fall, 2014, steel, aluminium, plaster, resin, LED lights, motor, 200cm x 200cm x 200cm. Courtesy of the artist and Blain | Southern

EXHIBITION GALLERIES | FLOORS 3 AND 4

Mat Collishaw Until 10 January 2016 The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to present a major survey exhibition by British artist Mat Collishaw, the first in a UK public gallery for over ten years. The exhibition includes photography, film, sculpture and installation and testifies to the richness and breadth of Collishaw’s practice, highlighting and exploring some of the overriding themes and preoccupations within his work. Mat Collishaw is fascinated by the darker side of human nature. He has never shied away from difficult or challenging subject matter; ideas that deal with death, destruction and decay are revealed as beautiful, hypnotic and compelling. In Collishaw’s world, seduction meets repulsion, the shocking becomes alluring, the beautiful becomes squalid and desire meets pain. As an artist, he is especially aware of the power of the image to manipulate and he draws his inspiration from a range of sources such as the media, popular culture, nature, mythology, the slick vernacular of advertising, the rich seams of art history and the proliferation of images available through the internet.

In Conversation Thursday 12 November, 6.30pm Join the artist for a talk about the exhibition. £3. Booking essential. For details see the Events Calendar.

Concurrent with his exhibition in Walsall, Collishaw presents an exhibition of new work, In Camera, commissioned by GRAIN and The Library of Birmingham, inspired by the Library’s internationally renowned photography collections (18 September 2015 — 10 January 2016). The New Art Gallery Walsall and The Library of Birmingham have jointly commissioned a limited edition print to mark the exhibitions. The print can be purchased from The New Art Gallery Walsall Shop, priced £235 (unframed). The exhibition continues on Floor 4 where All Things Fall is on display until 31 January 2016.

Curator’s tour Saturday 28 November, 2pm Join Deborah Robinson, Head of Exhibitions for an informal tour of the exhibition. Free, just drop in!

CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS

Jan Vanriet The Music Boy 29 January — 8 May 2016 Jan Vanriet is a hugely influential painter and poet from Belgium. He has exhibited widely across the world, representing his country in the biennials of Sao Paolo, Venice and Seoul yet this is his first exhibition in the UK. Much of his work is rooted in his family history. His parents met in the Mauthausen concentration camp and their stories and memories of the Second World War and its aftermath continue to influence his paintings. Themes of love, loss, identity,

destiny and disappearance pervade his work. Yet there is also an inherent playfulness and lightness of touch and an evident mastery of the medium of paint. The Music Boy is a polyptych of four paintings depicting his grandmother and uncle – his mother’s twin brother – playing the accordion as a boy before the war. Jan Vanriet was born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1948. He lives and works in Antwerp.

Laura Lancaster, Threshold, 2015, oil on linen, 240x480cm Courtesy of the artist and Workplace Gallery

EXHIBITION GALLERIES | FLOORS 3 AND 4

Laura Lancaster 29 January — 8 May 2016 Laura Lancaster is a painter who draws inspiration from forgotten and discarded photographs and home movies, found in flea markets, charity shops and through ebay. Once precious and significant to someone, they are now detached from their original contexts and instead, they become animated through Laura’s luscious, gestural and expressive application of paint. These lost and dislocated souls, caught in the ambiguous space between figuration and abstraction, compel us to reflect on time, memory and loss.

Preview Thursday 28 January 2016, 6-8pm Friends, family and colleagues welcome

This exhibition will bring together a range of works by the artist including a new series of diptychs which are drawn from the very first and last frames of found super 8mm home movies. With the inclusion of sprocket holes and marks on the film, the paintings are portraits of the medium of film as much as their subject matter. The juxtaposition of the first and last frames implies the passing of time through the lost narrative that bind these moments together. Laura Lancaster was born in Hartlepool in 1979 and she lives and works in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Jacob Epstein with Torso in Metal from Rock Drill, unknown photographer, c.1952, Epstein Archive, The New Art Gallery Walsall

COLLECTION EXHIBITIONS

Epstein’s Rock Drill Transformed by War Until 24 January 2016 Rock Drill is Epstein’s most radical and celebrated sculpture, often described as ‘the best thing he has ever done’. The totemic sculpture represents ‘a dramatic, revolutionary moment when sculpture in Britain first became uncompromisingly modern.’ However between the end of 1915 and the beginning of 1916 Epstein destroyed the original Rock Drill, discarding the drill and mutilating the figure; to form the truncated Torso in Metal from Rock Drill. Exhibition talk Saturday 3 October, 2pm Join Epstein Research Assistant Elin Morgan for an in-depth look at the exhibition. Free, all welcome.

Marking the centenary of Epstein’s dismantling of Rock Drill, and bringing together important works from the collections of Tate, The British Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Birmingham Museums Trust, this exhibition will reveal how the sculpture’s un-making is as significant as its making.

This body of work is the largest individual donation to our collections since The Garman Ryan Collection.

Works from The Clive Beardsmore Gift are exhibited throughout Floors 1 and 2 in the 10 themed Garman Ryan galleries. This exhibition features works on paper by leading Modern British Artists such as Edward Bawden, John Bratby, Graham Sutherland and Keith Vaughan.

Jessica Holt Untitled, 2014, steel, rock. Photo: David Rowan

ARTISTS’ STUDIO / RESIDENCIES

Jessica Holt 3 November — 1 December 2015 Jessica Holt’s sculptures explore the relationship between volume, mass, surface and structure. Her works are grounded in the pared-down minimalist aesthetic prevalent in America during the 1960s and early 1970s. Rocks act as bases for delicate steel structures, creating a tension between the natural and man-made. The elegance, lightness and seeming fragility of the metal structures is counterbalanced by the heavy mass of the supporting rocks.

Jessica graduated from Birmingham City University in 2014 and was selected for New Art West Midlands 15.

Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary 5 January — 27 March 2016 The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to be working with disability-led arts organisation, Shape, to offer a significant residency opportunity for a mid-career artist to develop their practice and profile. The Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary was set up in the memory of the life and work of sculptor, Adam Reynolds (1959 – 2005).

The bursary is offered annually via an open submission process in collaboration with partner galleries and museums across England.
