Statement of Interest

ard: 2005-2006

All of my life I have been very interested in how things work, and the most popular words that left my mouth as a kid were why and how. As I grew older, I thought that I wanted to become an engineer, and as I tried to cast art aside to focus on school I found that I needed to release my creativity. This lead me to photography, traditional art and most recently, web and graphic design. I realized that what I wanted to do was design, but a part of me still wanted to become an engineer. When I found the Industrial Design program, I immediately knew that it was the career for me. It seemed like it had been designed just for me and was the perfect mix of arts and academics that I had searched for. I believe that the Carleton Industrial Design program, being closely associated with the other Engineering and Design programs, will satisfy both the artistic and academic sides of me. I look forward to the chance to let my ideas free and transform my many hobbies into a career that’s right for me. Sincerely,

Pixel Matter Magazine

A 16 page magazine created as the Culminating Performance Task for my Yearbook Class. All pictures, layouts and articles were done by me. The magazine was completed in one month, and it focuses on local arts and culture. The Magazine was also accompanied by a CD with supporting files for the Photoshop Tutorial. The design for the CD is shown above. Also, the Pixel Matter logo, shown above, combines both self made and downloaded fonts.

Version One

Green Team Webdesign

A webdesign created for a fictional environmental company. Sketches made before the creation of the designs were used to create the finished products. The second version was created to simplify the design, and give it a more modern look. Both designs use natural textures such as soil and wood, emphasizing the companies relationship with the environment. Designed using Photoshop CS4, and a Wacom tablet.

Logo Development

The logo is created as an energy efficient light bulb mixed with bamboo.

Hear No Evil

See No Evil

A photography class project constructed around simplicity and contrast. A white background was used to contrast the purity of the photo with the evil it is portraying. Also, the contrast between the dark macro photos and the bright subject emphasize both the subject and the macro photos that the model is holding. Taken with a Nikon D60 and postprocessed in Photoshop CS4.

Media Project

An English media project in which a product was fabricated, and was later sold in an auction. An advertising campaign was created using Harry Potter, a well known character in the school community, to attract potential buyers. The design of the gingerbread house was inspired by the Hogwarts castle featured in the popular children’s movies. The project was done in a group of 6, but the design of the gingerbread house itself, the web site, and the posters were all done by me. 1- A sketch made before the fabrication of the gingerbread house. 2- 3-D drawings made of gingerbread using Sketch Up. 3- Pictures of the finished product 4 -The Webdesign used for the mini site advertising the gingerbread house. 5- The five posters which were used to advertise the gingerbread house, made in Photoshop. All photographs used were taken by me.
