Grizzly Boys Basketball Park and Freeman. He says Freeman will be solid, despite a weak football team this year. The same players don’t play both sports at Freeman, he says. Lakeside will have the core of their team back and Deer Park is expected to be solid, especially with the transfer of a top player from Chewelah. Newport went to state last year, ending the season with a 17-8 record. He says the whole league should be competitive. Riverside has a new coach, former Newport coach Steve Bryant.

TOP PROSPECTS: Sam Thomas didn’t play much varsity last year, although he was on junior varsity. Head coach Jamie Pancho expects him to perform on varsity. KEY LOSSES: The Grizzlies lost some key players to graduation, including Koa Pancho, Rylan Hastings, Robby Owen, Kade Zorica and Owen Leslie. OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE NORTHEAST A LEAGUE: Newport coach Jamie Pancho says the Grizzlies should compete for a league title again. Newport plays in the Northeast A League with Chewelah, Colville, Riverside, Medical Lake, Lakeside, Deer

STRENGTHS: Pancho says the team has speed and experience. Playoff experience from some starters will help. Newport had a good turnout, with 30 players. Players not on the football team have been practicing for a month, he said. WEAKNESSES: Pancho says with several of Newport’s players on the

OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE LEAGUE: Coach Mike Frederick candidly says he doesn’t know where the team will finish in the league with the loss of four seniors. “Our goal is to be a major player in the second half of the season as we continue to improve,” Frederick said. The Grizzlies finished last season with six wins and eight losses in the Northeast A League. The Grizzlies will compete against Medical Lake, Lakeside, Freeman, Chewelah, Colville and Deer Park. Medical Lake made it to the semi finals last year in state, with 14 wins and zero losses. They will be one of the teams to beat.

Grizzly Wrestling TOP PROSPECTS: Newport High School wrestling coach Adrian Bojorquez didn’t single out any one wrestler in particular, but he is impressed by the incoming freshmen that are participating. “We have a strong freshman turnout and most of them have wrestling experience,” Bojorquez says. KEY LOSSES: Braedon Corkrum, Tessa Pillers, and Megan Mason. OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE LEAGUE: “If we’re middle of the road, I would be happy,” Bojorquez says. “We’ve worked steadily to build the wrestling program up, and right now I just want to see that continue.” STRENGTHS: There are around 30 wrestlers in this year’s program, something Bojorquez appreciates. “We have more kids signing up for wrestling, which means we can fill more slots and not as many forfeits,” Bojorquez says.

Spartan Boys Basketball TOP RETURNEES: Seniors Keegan Hegel, Brandon McCracken, Robbie Anselmo and Brett Gordon; juniors Caden Brennan, Cole Thompson, Ben Zapfe and Jantzen Lucas. TOP PROSPECTS: Trentyn Kreager and Travis Mathews are two freshmen coach Kevin Wylie thinks will do well this year. KEY LOSSES: Dausen O’Brien, Ronnie Downs, Kody Salesky, Dylan Glazier and Dylan Johnson will be missed. OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE LEAGUE: “We have a good chance at winning league,” Wylie said. Along with Priest River, the Intermountain League is made up of Timberlake, Kellogg and Bonners Ferry. A senior heavy Kellogg team was defeated in the state title game in double overtime last year. But nine seniors from Kellogg graduated. Timberlake also made it to state last year and will have most of their players back, so they look to be strong. Priest River had a 2-15 overall record THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13 VS. NEWPORT:

ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS: “This team is one that works really hard, they are a great group of men that are fun to be around,” Wylie says. “They will accomplish a lot this season.”

COACHING EXPERIENCE: Wylie has four years coaching experience at the junior high level, two years as a JV coach and is in his fourth season as head coach for Priest River. Spartan Girls Basketball TOP RETURNEES: Seniors Liann Kren, Jasmine Martin, Abby Barnes and Tabitha Richey; juniors Karah Fink, Adrie Minish, Maddy Rusho, Heather Pound, and Shayla Martinez and sophomores Makia Fitzmorris and Hannah Palfrey.

TOP PROSPECTS: Liann Kren, Jasmine Martin, Makia Fitzmorris, and Karah Fink. KEY LOSSES: There were no seniors last year, so the Spartans did not have any key losses to graduation. OVERALL PROJECTION OF TEAM’S CHANCES IN THE LEAGUE: In addition to Priest River the Intermountain League is composed of Timberlake, Bonners Ferry and Kellogg. Two time defending state champion Timberlake has to be considered one of the teams to beat. They had 21 wins and four losses last season. Douglas said the Spartans have a good chance to be second or third in the league this year. STRENGTHS: “We have three seniors who I’ve been coaching since fresh-

man year who know the program’s potential,” said Douglas. “We have players who are able to play more than one position, knowledgeable returners who understand the plays and game, quick guards and big posts.”

WEAKNESSES: Douglas said the girls have to overcome their attitude coming off of last year’s losing season. The Spartans won four out of 18 last season. Douglas says the team will have to have confidence in themselves. The lack of players is another weakness for the team. “We only had 14 girls turn out for basketball this year,” Douglas said.

ATHLETIC EXPERIENCE: Douglas played sports all through school.

Spartan Wrestling TOP RETURNEES: Seniors Arron Reyes and Brandon Downs, sophomores Colby Poe, who didn’t participate in wrestling last year due to an after school job, and Graden Hanes. “Brandon is our team captain and our school’s second fourth year state placer in wrestling since 1990,” Priest River Lamanna High School wrestling coach Jesse Hellinger says. “Arron took second place in state last year and is a fast, strong wrestler. Colby and Graden have won all their matches so far in the season. It’s just a strong group.” TOP PROSPECTS: Hellinger says he expects great things from freshman Keith Poirier, who has already started the season with a 5-0 record with four of those wins by pin. “He is showing great promise,” Hellinger says. KEY LOSSES: Former seniors Riley DeMent, Sammy Hernandez, and

Larry Naccarato. “Riley really set the tone for what this team is,” Hellinger says. “He showed us what you could achieve on the mat and in the classroom.”

STRENGTHS: “We’re aggressive and we come out attacking,” Hellinger says. “We win with honor and lose with dignity.” WEAKNESSES: With only 12 wrestlers this year, the Spartans have holes in some of their weight classes, which lead to forfeited matches in the season. “We don’t have anyone in the 132, 138, or the 182 pound division,” Hellinger says. “If we have to forfeit those categories during duals, that’s an immediate loss of six points. We’re not large on numbers, but we’re deep on quality.” OVERALL PROJECTION OF THE TEAM’S CHANCES IN INTERMOUNTAIN LEAGUE: Considering the

Spartans had several wrestlers place at state last year, Hellinger said Priest River plans to place in the top 10 at state. “We finished 10th overall last year and I think we can do just as good, if not better,” Hellinger says. “It’s been one of the proudest things I have ever done in my life, is to coach this team.” HEAD COACH: Jesse Hellinger FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14

TOP PROSPECTS: Freshmen Kyden Nomee, Celias Holmes, and Colton Seymour are considered top prospects. Seymour started for the high school varsity last year as an eighth grader. KEY LOSSES: The Panthers will miss the playing of Colton Hansen, Dylan Hendershott and Tanner Shanholtzer, who all graduated. To get to the state tournament, North teams need to go through the Northeast 1B South FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14
