Book wedding photography early BY DON GRONNING OF THE MINER

PRIEST RIVER – Lining up a wedding photographer is something that should be arranged as soon as a wedding date is set, professional wedding photographers say. “Most photographers that shoot a lot of weddings have filled up most of the prime wedding days by early spring for the rest of the year,” says Priest River’s Whitney Kinney of WINK Photography. “Highly sought after shooters are sometimes booked years in advance. When you know a wedding is coming, it is time.” Kelly Quaschnick of Creatively Yours Photography agrees. “The northwest has a short wedding season,” she says. “Booking a photographer is one of the first things they should do as soon as they know the date.” Quaschnick has booked wedding shoots as far as a year and a half out and as early as a month before the wedding. So what should a couple expect to spend for wedding photography? “It depends on what you are looking for and what your budget can afford,” Kinney says. “You generally will get what you pay for.” She says some photographers who are just beginning their wedding photography careers will photograph a wedding for as little as $500. But for a professional to cover the wedding day and deliver the finished images for purchase, the consumer should expect to be starting in the COURTESY PHOTO|WHITNEY KINNEY

$1,000 range and extending to several thousand dollars. “Prints, albums and, if available, the digital images are usual sold as packages on top of the cost to cover the day,” she says. Quaschnick says cost varies a lot, but to get a professional photographer, $2,500-$3,500 isn’t unreasonable. “A professional is worth the money,” she says. Kinney says when you start to get into the professional class of photography you are getting a seasoned shooter, sometimes two, who have a feel for the flow and stresses of the day. “They know when and where they need to be to get the shots you want and can usually help with some of the timeline planning to help get great pictures throughout the day.” Many photographers will also cover an engagement session and sometimes

the rehearsal as part of their package. Quaschnick offers an engagement session. “It’s about a month before the wedding and a little more casual,” she says. It also helps prepare for the wedding day shoot. “You’re more comfortable because you’ve worked together before,” she says. Kinney agrees. “A engagement session for save the date and invitation letters is also a great way to get to know your photographer and become comfortable with them,” she says. Kinney likes to shoot as many pictures as possible before the wedding. “That way people can just enjoy the wedding and the reception to follow,” she says. Just how long this takes depends on how many people and what photos are important to the families. “It can take two to five hours to

get fair coverage, but it generally is a whole day event,” Kinney says. Kinney says she has shot weddings in spectacular locations like the Teton Mountains in Wyoming. But Pend Oreille and Bonner counties are long on beauty. “We honestly have so many venues right here in Pend Oreille and Bonner counties that are stunning and tasteful, both indoor and out,” she says. “We also have so much beauty in our area it makes it easy to sneak off and get amazing outdoor photos regardless of the location of the

ceremony.” A lot of money gets spent for a wedding on one-time things. The dress doesn’t get worn again. The flowers wilt. The cake gets cut. “I stress to my clients that the pictures are what you and your spouse take with you into your life together,” Kinney says. Kinney says she gets a lot of satisfaction out of wedding photography. “It is a great feeling to give the moments captured on film back to them, some of which they didn’t even see the day of the event,” she says.

NEWPORT – “Flowers set a photo of people apart from a photo of a wedding,” says Elin Kovash of Fleur de Lis Floral and Home in Newport. “And it’s all about the photos.” It doesn’t matter the budget or the timeframe, it’s possible to have outstanding flowers to complement any type of wedding. Kovash says she finds that flowers are the last vendor booked when a couple is planning their wedding. “We’re dealing with what’s left – what’s left of time and what’s left

of money.” Kovash knows she can deliver on any budget however. She does find that some brides come into her shop with some impossible expectations, mostly due to Pinterest and bridal magazines. Pinterest, she points out, doesn’t say where or when a wedding happened. “South Africa does these big flower weddings,” she said. “They’re very affordable there, but not here. (And) brides magazines are the worst.” She read an article recently about inexpensive winter wedding flowers that suggested white peonies. While Alaska does have extensive peony greenhouses, on average, peonies cost $20 per stem, outside of peony season. Lilly of the Valley is also requested a lot, Kovash said. Each spike is only about six inches tall – a little tiny thing. Retail, it costs about $18 per stem. There are alternatives. A South

American hydrangea, which “takes up a lot of real estate,” costs about $7 per stem. “I believe I can work with any budget. But I can’t give you peonies in December for most budgets,” Kovash said. What she wants all brides to know is that they don’t have to follow the trends. “I wish that brides realized there are more choices than you realize. You don’t have to do blushy peonies because Pinterest says that’s what to do. There’s a lot more choices than you realize,” she said. And some of those trends don’t give you the best results anyway. The trend has always been to put a bride in a white or cream dress, with white or blush colored flowers, and put the bridesmaids in colorful dresses with colorful bouquets. She SEE FLOWERS, 9

likes to turn that around. “Those lighter colors don’t show up in the photos. Let’s get some color in your bouquet, especially if you are wearing white or ivory,” Kovash says. The Newport area tends to be about three years behind the current global and national trends. There’s still a lot of baby’s breath, burlap and mason jar motifs going on here. And brides are still choosing the blush tones. She is seeing more dark plumbs mixed in this year, which she didn’t see in Newport last year. She says pink really stands the test of time, and she is loving the greenery bouquets she’s seeing trending nationally. Greenery was Pantone’s color of the year last year and this year it is electric purple. The other big trends she’s seeing is texture in bouquets; not just various flowers, but thistles, pods and pinecones are popular – anything that gives texture. Huge oversized arm bouquets are also en vouge, horizontal cascades of flowers, rather than the vertical cascades that used to be popular.

Pend Oreille Wedding Planner

Kovash says here she is still seeing a lot of what she calls the “lollipop” bride’s bouquet, which is a small, round tight group of flowers. “Sometimes that lollypop doesn’t really help your hips out in a white dress,” she says. While she has little luck swaying bride’s minds who come into her shop, she’s does try to impress upon them the importance of getting some color in their bouquets, especially if they are having DIY photography, or anyone other than a top-notch photographer, as it’s difficult to get pale flower shades to pop in wedding photos. “I get a kick out of it because I wouldn’t hire a professional and them tell them how to do their job, but that happens in flowers all the time,” Kovash says. The most common flower brides want are still peonies. “Peonies are the gold standard for weddings,” she says. She also does a lot with hydrangeas, as they take up space, are affordable and beautiful. Kovash suggests talking with your florist after the bridesmaids dresses SEE FLOWERS, 19

there’s no reason this group must be limited to women on her side and guys on his, or even that it’s limited to humans – a beloved pooch can make for an adorable ring-bearer, after all. Photography is an essential element of your big day, but think beyond the images you’ll capture throughout the wedding and reception. Photos lend a personal touch, no matter what your color scheme or theme. Integrate photos of the two of you at various stages of life, together as a couple and with loved ones (perhaps even some you’re honoring in memoriam). You can display these at a table with the guest book, as part of the table centerpieces, or even on the gift table. Or take things digital and load all your images into a slide show set to music. Make favors meaningful. Forgo more common items like bubbles and chocolate, and instead send a little of yourself home with your guests.

Maybe it’s a memento from a place with special meaning to you both, or a bottle opener shaped like a bicycle to represent the way you met. Just think about the moments and things that define you as a couple and do some searching online. You’ll probably be surprised by how quickly the options pile up. Serve up a menu that shows guests more about your life together. Your loved ones can order basic beef or chicken anywhere. Instead, give them a glimpse into you. Make your main course the same food you enjoyed on your first date or during another monumental moment in your courtship. Or plan the entire menu around a region that you hold close to your heart. Weddings are filled with traditions, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put your own touches on the day for a special event filled with memories that are uniquely your own. Music an important part of wedding celebration

BY BRAD THEW OF THE MINER

NEWPORT – We have all seen that one DJ at your second cousin’s sisterin-law’s wedding that just didn’t know what they were doing. From playing the wrong song at the wrong time to blurting out a curse word over his microphone, everyone tells them self, “Oh gosh, I would never hire that company, my wedding will be much better!” So, fast forward, to your big day, you have everything planned out. The venue, catering, photographer and the officiant, all lined up and ready to go. But now you are just going to use an iPod, because music is music, right? Well, I am here to tell you that there are some companies that really want to make your day everything you want it to be, then there are others just collecting money to set up speakers and play music. If you are like me, you want someone who can control a room and make the entire night an enjoyable experience, from start to finish. But here is the thing: iPods don’t direct your party. They don’t create a special moment. They don’t assist the newlyweds through all the ups and downs of a wedding. They play music, and if that is all you want, you are more than welcome to use an iPod, but I can assure you it will not be the same experience as having a well practiced Master of Ceremonies. You might be thinking, “Oh, but I have heard DJs are expensive.” They can be, depending on what they offer. A DJ will cost somewhere between SEE DJ, 11

about $750 and $1,500, less than 10 percent of your total cost of the wedding, which averages around $35,000. From organizing the order of events and coordinating with other wedding professionals, announcing the formalities, making little announcements throughout the night and keeping the energy high on the dance floor, the DJ keeps the party flowing. But how can you tell if the company you are trying to hire is reputable and will do what you want them to do? Ask them. If you are speaking to a professional, they will want to meet with you, get to know you and your family, and try to create the most special moment of your life, as perfect as you want it. They will seem interested in how your engagement has been, and how everything started.

So, you have already spent a bit to make your venue, decorations, tuxes and dress perfect, having a DJ come in dressed in a dirty T-shirt and jeans just seems to ruin the whole evening. This can be a big clue to whether or not you have a professional. A T-shirt and shorts are just fine for setting up, but once that Ceremony starts, that attire just doesn’t cut it. Talking about look, does their equipment look good and compliment your wedding colors or decorations? Ask them if their system has different configurations or if they use dance floor or atmospheric lighting. Usually if they have atmospheric and architectural lighting, they should be able to customize the color of their system to your wedding colors, and that always has a cool look to it. A professional DJ can make a big difference in the wedding.

Rebel weddings: Matrimony outside the box BY SOPHIA ALDOUS OF THE MINER

A wedding should enhance the bond between couples and evoke a feeling of love and joy to come--obvious, right? But we all don’t have the same idea of what that looks like, which is why some brides and grooms prefer to share their special day outside of the traditional settings. No church or long white dress? No problem. From something as bold as skydiving to getting married at the starting line of Bloomsday, to the more reserved, but freethinking approach of getting married in your front yard with a beloved family member officiating. One such couple taking a slightly different take on their wedding day are Melissa Boober, 37, and Tim Hart, 48, of Federal

Way, are cutting out the church and having their ceremony and reception in the same spot, the George Town Ballroom in Seattle, complete with a rockabilly theme. Boober, who has family in Newport, says she and Hart weren’t interested in revisiting the typical wedding scenarios. “We both wanted something that reflected who we are as a individuals and as a couple,” Boober says of the theme. “We’re fun-loving and a little bit goofy, so we wanted to show that, and for our guests to have a good time.” The coupe plans to wed in May of this year. Instead of doilies and flowers, there will be vinyl LPs as table arrangements, Hart’s outfit includes wingtips and leopard print, and Boober’s dress will come down at the knee with polka dots, as opposed to the SEE REBEL, 13

usual tuxedo and white, floor-length dress combination. A friend will officiate the ceremony in the ballroom. “We’ve both been married once before, so we’re at a point where we’re really not into the whole white wedding/church thing,” says Hart, a sign that music will be key in the couple’s special day. to and the tunes will run the gamut form Frank Sinatra, Elvis and even the Sex Pistols. “We both feel that a lot of weddings are too stuffy and too much of a dog and pony show,” Hart says. “And I’ve seen couples under so much pressure from their families that the groom and bride are just stressed out on what should be a wonderful day to start the rest of their lives. Because at the end of the day I’m just looking forward to marrying my best friend.”

WEDDING PLANNING 101

First comes the proposal then comes the wedding planning. There are dozens of decisions that need to be made before it’s time to walk down the aisle, which can be overwhelming for brides and grooms. To help make it less stressful, these tips from Macy’s can help couples through the entire wedding-planning process, from on-trend apparel and accessories for the entire wedding party to all the essentials to create a perfect registry. SEE PLANNING, 15

PLANNING: FROM PAGE 14

Dressing the Ladies When it comes to bridesmaid dresses, the mix-and-match approach is trending in popularity. Start by deciding on a color palette, such as lilac, champagne and petal pink. Then have each bridesmaid choose her favorite style within that range of hues. Bring it all together by choosing a uniform look for makeup, shoes and accessories. There is no better time to thank the ladies than the morning of the big day. A few thoughtful gifts can go a long way, such as matching robes, tumblers to stay hydrated throughout the day and cosmetic cases to stow makeup essentials. Dressing the Gents Similar to bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen attire can be dependent on the venue and overall event aesthetic. While a suit can fit the bill for a country club wedding, a city affair may call for the sleek finishes of a tux. Tuxedo accessories, such as cuff links

or bow ties, make great groomsmen gifts and are classic pieces they can use time and time again. Creating the Perfect Registry When building a registry, it’s never too early to start. People want to give gifts as soon as they know a couple is engaged. Start by taking inventory of what you already have, what you need and what you want to upgrade. It’s also recommended to update the registry regularly so there are enough gifts to choose from, especially if there is an engagement party and bridal shower coming up. To get started, some popular registry items include stand mixers, craft beer glasses, Dutch ovens, bath towels and vacuums. For extra guidance, couples can speak to advisors who can help with the full registry building process at Macy’s stores. In the boudoir: Photos are more than just a gift

BY SOPHIA ALDOUS OF THE MINER

NEWPORT – At first Destiny McGuire hadn’t planned on doing a boudoir photo shoot. In fact, her best friend, Maxine Barber, planned it for her. The 21-year-old bride-to-be and former Newport resident had no idea until the day before the photo shoot was scheduled to take place. “It caught me off guard and I wasn’t sure I even wanted to do it,” says McGuire, maiden name Smith, who married her husband, Kavick McGuire in August 2016. “But ultimately I did it because I wanted to have the perfect gift for my groom.” Boudoir photography has grown in popularity over the past decade, both as a way for women to boost confidence about their bodies and sensuality and as a gift from wives and girlfriends to their significant others. It can be done with lingerie, in the nude, and/or the clothing of the woman’s husband or boyfriend, like a t-shirt or sports jersey. “Sometimes there’s the misconception that it (boudoir) is always in the nude, or has to be done a specific way, but really it’s whatever makes the person feel the best about herself,” says Kelly Quaschnick, 38, owner of Creatively Yours Photography. Quaschnick has done approximately 25 boudoir shoots over the last three years and her clients range in age from twenties to early sixties. Before each photo shoot she always does a consultation with her clients to find out what they want. “I had a client who knew that she had a good-looking backside, and that’s what she wanted to highlight,” COURTESY PHOTO|CHRISTOPHER DEMLOW

explains Quaschnick. “Other times there are women who are feeling shy, who may need a little guidance in putting together a shoot, and that’s okay too. Don’t let the idea that you need to lose 10 or 20 pounds stop you. Sensuality and sexiness is how you feel, and when you feel hat way, it comes through in your photos.” McGuire admits that she was nervous at first and had no clue what to do when she and Maxine arrive at the Foxwood House in Newport for the photo shoot. However, with some helpful instruction from the photographer on how to hold poses, and some tension relieving joking, she started to enjoy herself. She credits Maxine and the photographer for encouraging her to overcome her anxiety. “The thing about boudoir shoots is every woman wants to do one, even

if it’s just for themselves,” says McGuire. “It is a huge self-esteem booster; I left that photo shoot feeling like the sexiest, most empowered woman in the world. But most women will make excuses not to do them (boudoir shoots) because the first few moments before you start enjoying yourself is so vulnerable. So they will tell themselves they’ll do it after they lose another 10 ponds, or when the stretch marks fade, or whatever the case may be. “But doing a boudoir photo shoot before your wedding is not only the most perfect gift for your groom, but it is truly a gift for yourself. Be yourself and seduce the camera. You will leave that shoot feeling beautiful, desirable, powerful, confident, and nothing can be more important than feeling this way for your big day, and you will still be feeling that way, trust me.”

She offers a shotgun package for $100, which includes the bride’s bouquet and the groom’s boutonniere. From there, as budget allows, you can include the bridal party, parents and grandparents, and the minister, which Kovash recommends to really finish of the appearance of the bridal party. She has all her prices on her website, categorized in packages. The bride and groom pick a package, the colors and the general style, and Kovash picks the rest. “You really get the most bang for your buck,” she says. “I have so many girls come in who don’t have a budget and I’m really shooting in the dark.” As far as time, Kovash has put weddings together in a matter of

days. “As long as you don’t need that South African flower grown on the side of a particular mountain that I have to order in,” she says with a laugh. She points out that as more and more wedding venues open up in the Pend Oreille River Valley, it’s becoming a sort of destination for weddings. “We have everything here, except for the wedding dress,” she says. “You really could come to this area, and get everything you need except the dress.” For those brides who are looking to be a bit adventurous, Kovash is dying to do a hot pink and lime wedding. “I want to do one of those big, overblown bridal arches in hot pink and lime,” she said. Or, a bohemian wedding with macramé and elk antlers. Around here, she may get her way with the elk antlers.
