Newport: Travled to Freeman From Page 1B

“Defensively we were pretty solid and Gracie StrangeOwl , Taylor Belton, Aryonna Willoughby all contributed,” Lewis said. Newport beat Kellogg 4-1 Thursday, Sept. 10. “We started out kinda sluggish but overall controlled the game throughout,” Lewis said. Faith Rosen scored two, Lewis had one, and Emily Jurgens scored a goal. “Our goalie Tiara Hamberg played well and is getting better and more confidence with time. Stephanie played solid as usual in our middle,” Lewis said. Newport fell to Clarkston 7-1 Saturday, Sept. 12. “Clarkston had a lot of skilled kids

with speed that we could not match,” Lewis said. “We held our own for about 20 minutes but then their speed wore us down. We got a good look at how the game should be played and hopefully we are better in the long run for it.” Overall Lewis is pleased, even with the loss. “Our effort was good and that is what I ask,” he said. Tiara Hamberg at goalie had plenty of action and experience. Faith Rosen had a corner kick in the 79th minute that she scored off of to avoid the shutout. “We start league play next week and should be ready,” Lewis said.
