Grizzly Football Top returnees: Seniors Danny Bradbury, Tug Smith, Johnny Miller, Jacob Tanner and Adam Moorhead; juniors Luke Nichols, Jacob Kirkwood, Troy Hill and Gus Newman; sophomores Michael Owen and Tiegen Prange Top prospects: Jesse Cummings, a junior running back/defensive back is a new player. Newport coach Dave Pomante is hesitant to name top prospects but there are several new, young faces on Newport’s varsity team this year, including some big freshmen, like 5 feet 9 inch, 170 pound linebacker/tight end Jevin Stricker; 6 feet, 175 pound lineman Mathieu Kirkwood; 5 feet 10 inch, 175 pound lineman Ethan Kramer; and 6 feet, 175 pound tight end/defensive end Aaron Eggleston. Other freshmen include receiver Dylan Schoener, tight end/linbacker Tanner Batie and lineman Dillan Nokes.
graduated. The Grizzlies lost a dozen seniors to graduation. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast A League: “If we develop mental toughness, we will be competitive,” Newport head coach Dave Pomante said. The Grizzlies made it to the state semi finals last year, beating league champ Colville in a key playoff game to get there. Newport plays in the Northeast A League, which is made up of teams from Colville, Deer Park, Freeman, Lakeside, Medical Lake, Newport and Riverside. Chewelah is not in the Northeast A League this year. They are now playing in Northeast 2B North. Strengths: Pomante says the team has a great core of returners.

Grizzly Volleyball Top prospects: The top prospects for the Grizzlies this year are Anna Wyrobeck, offensive hitter and defensive specialist, and Madi Bradbury, middle hitter and blocker. Key losses: The key losses for the Grizzlies are outside hitter Faith Hood, libero Trystan Porter, middle blocker Kyleah Mercurius, outside hitter Crystal Miller and opposite hitter Madi Hofstee. Overall projections of the team’s chances in the Northeast A League: “Our league is always competitive, and this year will be no different. Our focus this year is on building championship program and mindset. With dedication and hard work we have the potential to finish in the top three,” coach Hansen said. Strengths: “This is the most cohesive group of girls I’ve ever coached. They are totally committed to each other and playing better every day,” Hansen said. Newport ended last season with 2 wins and 11 losses. Weaknesses: “We are a very young varsity team this year. Most of the team only saw playing time on the
junior varsity team last year,” the coach said. Additional comments: “We open against one of the toughest teams in the state (Freeman Sept. 4). This will be a defining moment for our team. All the work we have put in this year and over the summer will be tested,” Hansen said. Rule changes that affect your team: “The loss of Chewelah from our league cuts our schedule by two games, and more importantly it changes the allotments the Northeast A League receives for post-season play,” coach Hansen said. Head coach: Shannon Hansen Age: 48 Coaching experience: Hansen has been with the Grizzles for three years and coaching for 20 years in Texas and Idaho. Occupation: Hansen is the administrative secretary for the school district and a writer. Athletic experience: Hansen played volleyball and basketball in high school, and was a member of a competitive dance team.

Grizzly Girls Soccer Top returnees: Seniors Emily Bronkhorst, Madysen Baldwin and Cydni Lewis; juniors Chloe Walker and Kaylee Solis; sophomores Solei Carter, Brenna Ells, Ruth Hildreth and Brook Marsengill Top prospect: Newport girls’ soccer coach Jeremy Lewis pointed to freshman Eveyln Jurgens as a top prospect. “She’s fast and athletic and primarily playing defense right now,” Lewis said. “She knows how to handle the ball really well.” Key losses: Former seniors Jocelyn Endicot, Victoria Helton, Tessa Pillers, Stephanie Huang, Tiara Hamberg, Lydia Jurgens, Paige Dice, Makayla Pym and Corinna Cauchy all graduated. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast A League: Though Lewis was mum on where he thinks his team stands, last year the Lady Grizzlies’ overall record was 7-4-2 and they ended the season in seventh place. Throughout this season, Newport will face off against NEA teams Freeman, Medical Lake, Deer Park, Lakeside, Riverside,
Davenport and Colville. Strengths: Lewis said the core of the team has talent, noting the girls with more experience on the field would help lead the others in communication. Weaknesses: “Overall we’re very young and not very deep,” Lewis said.
Head coach: Jeremy Lewis and Laura Varity
Occupation: Lewis is a family physician at Newport Hospital and Health Services and Varity works at Ponderay Newsprint Co. Athletic experience: Varity played collegiate soccer.

fullback, Teagun Holycross, a junior running back/defensive back RB/DB, and sophomore quarterback/linebacker Coby Rogers are considered top prospects by the Spartans’ new head coach Justin Torfin. Kellogg won the league last year, with the Spartans finishing second for the second time in as many years. The Spartans also made it to state for the second time in the last two years.

Spartan Cross Country Key Returnees: Seniors Caleb Gleason, Cameron Parkes, Jordan Phillips; juniors Kyler Lord, Izzie Schmidt, Sharnai Hogan, Julia Rantala; sophomores Graden Hanes, Annika Rantala and Amber Johnston; freshman Kymara Fulton Top prospects: Freshmen Kaden Fulton, Travis Mathews, Brian Lord, Conor Berns, and Ericka Swoboda Key Losses: Konner Durham, Slava Negreiev, Spencer Sedgwick, Rheini Proctor, Paula Willin, Karleigh Durham and Katelyn Marks Strengths: The Spartans have a strong sense of togetherness and they work hard, coach Clark said. Weaknesses: They need better communication and to change some mind sets. Overall projection of the team’s changes in the Intermountain League: “We are going to be in the top two boys’ and girls’ teams this year unless something happens to change things,” coach
Clark said. He predicts the boys will finish first, followed by Timberlake, Bonners Ferry, Coeur d’Alene Charter and Kellogg. He expects Priest River girls to finish second behind Timberlake, with Bonners Ferry, Coeur d’Alene Charter and Kellogg rounding out the standings. “I am excited about both the boys’ and girls’ teams. I think that everyone has something to offer in this group. We are strong and should be proud by the end of the season. Cameron Parkes and Caleb Gleason will lead the boys with a number of boys that will quickly close the gap with our leaders. I am not sure who will lead the girls. It will be a tight race for the lead. That is good for our girls, not bad! They are talented. Goals are to get our first No. 1 league championship. State will speak for itself.” Additional comments: “I believe that we are stronger in the boys, and we have the ability to be in the girls. We will need a few additions for the girls, or a few girls that decided not to come out this year to change their
minds and join us. We could also use some new talent from the unknown. Maybe a home schooler, new student, or a student from a local private school to come join our team. We would welcome you gladly,” Coach Clark said. Last year, the Spartan boys finished ninth at state. Parkes was the district champion and 18th at state. Gleason was district runner-up and 29th at state. The girls were 10th at state. Rantala took fourth at districts and
28th at state. Schmidt was 11th at districts and 50th at state. Head Coach: Lance Clark Age: 41 Coaching Experience: Clark has 15 seasons as Priest River Lamanna High School Head Coach and 21 seasons as a running coach.

Spartan Boys Soccer Top prospects: Though soccer coach Rob Lawler didn’t single out any individuals as top prospects, he said the team has a, “standout freshman class” with endurance, skill, and are, “all-around athletes that see the game well and position themselves well both defensively and offensively. Key losses: Former seniors Drayven Ayers, Kris Morey and Robert Irvine graduated, and current senior Matthew Brengle, who did not return due to concussion concerns, and junior Bonin Nordby. Overall projection of the team’s chances in the Intermountain League: Last year the Spartans finished with a 1-14-1 record and placed sixth in the league. This year, “I think we’ll be in the middle,” Lawler said. He pointed to St. Maries and Bonners Ferry as “very tough” teams to compete with. He added
that Priest River is on equal ground with Grangeville and Orofino. Strengths: The Spartans’ freshmen team coming in and competing at varsity level, with a lot of depth offensively. Weaknesses: “We lost a lot of our defense, so we have to rebuild those skills while other teams have fresh legs and more subs than we do,” said Lawler. “We’re going to have to overcome that.” Additional comments: “I’m super excited about the kids who have

Key losses: Senior Hailey Hatfield and freshman Halie Moore Overall projection of the team’s chances in the Intermountain League: “I think we’ll come in third,” new girls’ soccer coach Rachel Davis said. The Lady Spartans already had an exciting start to this season, tying with long-time opponent Timberlake 4-4 last month. Strengths: “We have a great defense,” said Davis. Weaknesses: First time soccer players learning the various positions on the field is something the team will have to work on, said Davis. “We have new players learning positions, so getting that drilled and down is a challenge,” Davis said. some young players this year, two of them being eighth graders,” he said. The North division is now made up of Cusick, Selkirk, Columbia, Curlew, Northport, Republic and Tekoa-Rosalia. Tekoa-Rosalia is a new addition to the league and Inchelium isn’t fielding a team. The other conference is the Northeast 1B South, made up of Almira/CouleeHartline, Bridgeport, Entiat, Odessa, Pateros, Waterville-Mansfield, Wellpinit and Yakama Tribal. In week 10 of the season, the No. 1 team from the North division will play the South’s No. 1 team for the one and two seeds to state. The division’s No. 2 teams will play each other for the number three and four seeds. When the crossover games happen and the best of the conference play the best from Northeast 1B south conference, Almira/Coulee-Hartline and OdessaHarrington have to be considered the best of that conference. The No. 1 and No. 2 teams from the North will play their counterparts from the South for seeding to the state tournament. The top two teams from each conference will go on to state. The No. 3 teams from each conference will play for the last remaining playoff slot. Strengths: Coach Alex Laughery says the Panthers have good returning skill positions, including Jed Cupp back as starting running back. Weaknesses: “Our size will be one of our weakness this year,” Laughery says. He says starting such a young team will likely create some problems for at the beginning. this year and there are lots of good returnees. The Rangers expect Shelby Rood, Kaitlyn Chantry and Nicol Lyons to replace the losses from Emma Avery and Mykenzie Maupin’s graduation. Key losses: The Rangers will miss defensive specialist Emma Avery, and Mykenzie Maupin who graduated last year. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast 1B League: Coach Zimmerman said she expects the team to do as well as last year or better. Last year the Rangers finished the regular season in first place in the Northeast 1B North League with a school record of 14-1. They went to the state tournament and finished eighth. Strengths: The Rangers benefit from a seasoned team with lots of experience, tough hitters, a great setter, and an awesome defense, according to Zimmerman. “Jenna Couch is in my opinion, one of the best setters in the state,” Zimmerman said in an interview last year. “Al-
lison Petrich is a wonderful middle/ outside hitter. She is young and learning, improving every day. Passing was excellent from Emma Avey, Quinn Zimmerman and Bree Dawson.” Weaknesses: The Rangers lost two of its players this year to graduation. At the end of last season Zimmerman said that the loss of the two girls would be hard because it is a close team, but they were priming several players to step into the positions. Changes to rules that affect the team: The league lost two teams this year, Inchelium and Wellpinit, but gained Harrington.
