July 25 & 26 Bull of the Woods
Lifelong resident of Priest River BY DON GRONNING OF THE MINER
PRIEST RIVER - It’s not that unusual for somebody to live their entire life in one town but Darrel Wear, the 2014 Bull of The Woods, has lived on the same property his entire life. “I’ve lived here 72 years,” Wear said. He grew up at the family place along Highway 57 just north of the high school in Priest River. Wear and his twin brother, Don, live in houses on the family lot. While not identical twins, they do bear a striking resemblance. “A lot of people can’t tell us apart,” Wear said. His wife, Connie, can verify that. In the past, sometime even she mixed them up. “A lot of people tell me I have two husbands,” she jokes.

Wear was selected Bull of the Woods for this year’s Timber Days celebration. Wear certainly qualifies for the honor. He started working at the Carney Post Yard at age 14, along with his brother Don. “We’d pile posts in railroad cars,” he says of his weekend and summer job. After he graduated high school, Wear joined the Army. He served two years, including a stint in Vietnam. He worked in supply and transportation at Ft. Lewis, but soon found himself transferred to Oklahoma for artillery training and on to Vietnam. He ended up refueling aircraft at a small airport. Wear says he was fortunate to not have been injured in the conflict. “A week after I left, they blew up our depot,” Wear SEE BULL, 3C

said. When he got back to Priest River, he went to work in the woods with his father, Tom Wear. They worked with Ray McFall. “Dad ran a jammer and I hooked,” he said, referring to the practice of throwing a hook around a log to hook it to pull up on the truck. He held a number of similar jobs over the years, working for Hans Japson, Leonard Byers and Gropp Logging. “At that time, you could go to work anywhere you wanted,” he said. In 1967 he marred Connie Byers. They have been married 47 years. “My girlfriend introduced us.” Connie says. “We didn’t date very long before we were married.” It wasn’t long before they had their two children – Tom and Brenda. One of his longest jobs was

and the Wears stayed at camp a lot. “About the only time we came home was payday,” Wear says. Their children also stayed in the camps. “They were camp kids,” laughs Connie. The Wears camped at Camp 9 at Huckleberry Bay at Priest Lake. Life in the camps could be exciting. “I remember one time we had a bear come through the cookhouse,” he says. Wear also worked for Ron McDonald, Rick Pettit and Reynolds Logging, retiring from full time logging in 1962 because of bad knees. “My knees got so bad, I couldn’t move around much,” he says. He eventually had both knees replaced. Still, he enjoyed his career
working in the woods. “I enjoyed the different places you see and the people you meet,” he says. Working in the woods is a dangerous profession and Wear considers himself lucky to not have been seriously injured. The worst thing that happened to him was a cut lip that required some stitches. Some of his co-workers weren’t as fortunate. “I carried some people out of the woods,” Wear says. Throughout his life, he has enjoyed hunting and fishing, something he still does. He doesn’t hunt for trophies, however. “I’m not a horn hunter,” he says. “I would rather have a good doe than a burley buck.” The love of hunting and fishing was passed on to the children and grandchildren. “My grandson is a good fly fisherman,” he says. That would be Jake Wear of Rathdrum. Wear’s son, Tom, inherited his father’s love of motor vehicles. There will be four generations of Wears riding in Tom’s 2002 Dodge pickup in the parade. Darrel Wear has liked cars all his life, even picking up a few trophies racing at Deer Park. He remembers some of the favorite cars he has owned, including a 1950 Chevy that he raced, a ’53 Ford and a ’59 Catalina convertible. His favorite might have been a 1969 Dodge Coronet. He was one of the founders of the original Asphalt Angels

We’re proud of our Timber Industry workers and proud to sell their fine products • The typical 2,400 square foot, single-family home requires about 16,000 board feet of framing lumber and over 14,000 square feet of other wood products including plywood, oriented strand board, glulam beams, wood I-joists, laminated veneer lumber, hardboard, particleboard and medium-density fiberboard (MDF). • 220 logging trucks are needed to carry one million board feet (MMBF) of raw logs. That’s 4,500 board feet per truck. • Roughly 35 jobs are created for each million board feet of wood processed. Each million board feet of timber harvested provides $614,000 in personal income and $2.6 million in sales of goods and services.

They also enjoy making the rounds at the area’s casinos. “But we only take $20 a piece,” says Connie. “That way we don’t get home and find we lost the rent money.”
It’s inevitable, but things have changed over the years in Priest River. Going to the store isn’t the same, for instance. “It used to be, you’d go to the store and you’d see people you know,” he says. “Now I go to the store and I don’t know hardly anybody.” Still, Priest River is his lifelong home and he wouldn’t live anywhere else. “There’s good hunting and fishing,” he says. “It’s a good all around place to live.”
