GRIZZLY BOYS BASKETBALL Top returnees: seniors Koa Pancho, Rylan Hastings, Robby Owen, Kade Zorica and Owen Leslie; juniors Danny Bradbury, Adam Moorhead and Tug Smith. Pancho was first team all-NEA league last season, and Owen Leslie and Danny Bradbury made second team all-NEA league. Top prospects: Newport coach Jamie Pancho says there is a strong junior varsity. “We have a number of new JV players coming into the program who will make an impact on our JV team this season,” he said. Pancho says he’s looking to bring some of them up to varsity to give them some court time by mid-season and beyond. Junior varsity players like 6 foot 1 inch freshmen Ben Krogh, Michael Owen and Steve Burkett may see some varsity action before the year is out.
player to graduation - Christopher Ownbey. Overall projection of team’s chances in the Northeast A League: “The NEA is going to be tough night in and night out,” Pancho says. “We expect to get the best from every team we play. The guys feel confident that we have a chance to compete for a league championship and district title.” Newport had an historic season last year, finishing sixth in the state, the highest finish in school history and bringing back a state trophy. The starters are back this year. The team hopes to win a state championship this year. Newport plays in the Northeast A League with Chewelah, Colville, Riverside, Medical Lake, Lakeside, Deer Park and Freeman.

GRIZZLY WRESTLING Top returnees: Seniors Braedon Corkrum and Tessa Pillers; juniors Jed Cupp, Tyler Ward, Chris Rivard, and Megan Mason; sophomores Bailey Corkrum, Nate Allen, Sierra Mason, Gus Newman, and Gage Seger. “Two of our senior wrestlers are (or should be) set to have strong senior seasons,” said Newport wrestling coach Adrian Bojorquez. “Tessa Pillers and Braedon Corkrum. Tessa is looking into a few colleges at NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) level to possibly wrestle for them. Providence University in Montana and Waldorf University in Iowa. Tessa could really seal the deal if she has a strong finish to her senior year. Corkrum came up two points short of participating in the State tournament last year. “He is super hungry and is very determined to improve and fight for a spot on the podium at state this year,” said Bojorquez. Top prospects: “We have several kids who I anticipate will do well this year,” Bojorquez said. Those include Braedon Corkrum, Sierra Mason, Megan Mason, Tessa Pillers, Nate Allen, Jed Cupp, Josh Stricker and Gage Seger.
with teams much better this year. We only won one league dual last year, but I think we have the potential to earn two or three league duals this year.” Strengths: The Grizzlies biggest strength this year, from last year, is the fact that there are several more volunteer coaches coming into wrestling practice and working with the athletes, according to Bojorquez. “It makes the flow and competitiveness of practice much better,” he said. Weaknesses: “Our biggest weaknesses are that we are a young team and we are missing a few weight divisions.” Changes in rules: Bojorquez added that there is one rule change that will affect all teams. Wrestling will continue on the edge of the mat, as long as there are two points of contact in bounds (one point of contact from each wrestler or two from one wrestler). This means a wrestler can be pinned while his body is not in bounds. Points of contact are considered parts of the body that are at or above the knees. So a foot or lower leg does not count as a point of contact.
Key losses: None Overall projection of team’s chances in the league: “To be honest, we are still rebuilding the program,” said Bojorquez. “But I can say with confidence that we will compete

From Page 7 Intermountain league is made up of teams from Timberlake, Bonners Ferry, Kellogg and Priest River. The Spartans got into the district championship game last year, where they lost a 45-44 heartbreaker to Timberlake for a state playoff slot. They finished the year with a 7-16 overall record and a 3-5 Intermountain League record. Strengths: Wylie says he looks to the Spartans to play well as a team, work hard and not give up. “We have really good shooters, and strong post players who can rebound and score inside the key,” he says. Weaknesses: Having just eight varsity players has to count as a weakness. Wylie says besides depth, the Sparts aren’t that tall – their tallest player is 6 feet 3 inch senior Dylan Glazier. The Spartans have four players over 6 feet tall. Wylie says they have a guard-heavy roster.
Additional comments: “This team is a hard working group, with a never give up attitude,” Wylie says. “I predict by late December this team will start to click and we should end on a great second half of season.” Head coach: Kevin Wylie Age: 33 Coaching experience: Wylie has nine years experience. He has been head varsity coach for Priest River the last three years. Occupation: Wylie works as public works supervisor for West Bonner Water District. Athletic experience: Wylie played junior high and high school ball. “After high school I stayed involved playing in competitive leagues in Spokane, and Coeur d’Alene,” he said. Cochrane and Poe both took after-school jobs. Strengths: “We’re a physically and mentally tough team,” said Hellinger. “We train really hard and put in the time at practice. We’re not afraid of pain and working hard.”

Weaknesses: The Spartans don’t have a heavyweight wrestler this year, and could use a few more athletes. “It’s not too late to get involve in this season, if there’s kids out there who want to join,” Bojorquez. Overall projection of the team’s chances in Intermountain League: Considering the Spartans won the district championship in 2017-2017 and had several wrestlers place at state last year, Hellinger said the Spartans plan to defend their championship and place in the top 10
at state. “I’m so proud to have the assistant coaches we do, and the support they lend our kids,” Hellinger said. “I’d put my lot in with this team any day.”

PANTHER BOYS BASKETBALL Top returnees: seniors Dylan Hendershott, Colton Hansen, Tanner Shanholtzer; juniors Ethan Hardies, Cameron Cotter; sophomores Trevor Shanholtzer and Devin Browneagle. Top prospects: Cusick coach Rob Seymour has high hopes for Kobe Seymour, who transferred to Cusick from Inchelium, as well as eighth grader Colton Seymour, who scored 17 points in his first varsity start. Key losses: The Panthers will miss the play of Bryce Nomee, who graduated. Overall projection of team’s chances in the league: Seymour
predicts his team will finish first in the Northeast 1B League’s North division. The North division is made up of Curlew, Inchelium, Northport, Republic and Selkirk. The Panthers finished last season with a 10-12 overall record and tied for second in the division with a 9-6 league record. Strengths: Seymour says his team has quickness, depth and shooters. In their first two games, the Panthers rained down 3-pointers, hitting a dozen in a losing effort against Bonners Ferry and 13 in a league win against Republic. Weaknesses: Seymour says the team is young and not particularly tall.
Additional comments: Seymour is enthused about the season. “Cusick will be a competitor this season, don’t count us out,” he says. Head coach: Rob Seymour

Top returnees: Selkirk won’t have any returning seniors this year, but juniors Ben Fristad and Thomas Huttle are back, as are sophomores Steven Davis and Ryan Zimmerman. Top prospects: Zech Curran, a 6 foot sophomore, Justin Krabbenhoft, a 6 feet 2 inch sophomore, Jay Link, a 6 foot sophomore and Ty Taylor, a 5 feet, 9 inch sophomore are among the top prospects. Key losses: The Rangers will miss the play of graduates Ben Avey, Jacob Couch, Austin Robertson and Brayden Taylor. Overall projection of team’s chances in the league: “The team should be very competitive and fighting for the top spot in the Northern Division,” Ranger coach Kelly Cain says. The Northeast 1B League North division consists of Curlew, Cusick, Inchelium Northport Republic and Selkirk. Selkirk finished last year with an 18-6 record. They were the top team in the Northeast 1B North conference last year, with a 12-3 league record, ahead of Inchelium and Cusick, who both had 9-6 league records.
Strengths: Cain says the team has a good young core with a big upside potential. “With good length we should be able to develop into a tough defensive/rebounding team,” Cain says. The team has the potential to have multiple capable scorers. Weaknesses: The team isn’t long on varsity experience, with only two upper classman returning from last year’s squad. Trying to replace the strong leadership from last season will be one key to the team’s success, Cain says. Head coach: Kelly Cain Age: 54 Coaching experience: Cain has 34 years coaching experience, including eight years as head football coach and 29 years as head basketball coach. Occupation/Teaching experience: He has 30 years experience as a teacher. Athletic experience: Cain played high school football, basketball and baseball for Mount Vernon High School. Assistant coaches: Jeff Miller

RANGER WRESTLING Top returnees: Seniors Hunter Carmen, Ryan Issakides and Calvin Rood; sophomore Wyatt George Top prospects: Selkirk wrestling coach Keith Saxe believes his senior group will prove promising. Key losses: Seniors Zayren Bubb, Tristan Chantry, Wyatt Stoddard and Jared Taft Strengths: “We have three athletes who have wrestled since they were five years old,” Saxe says of Carmen, Issakides, and Rood. Weaknesses: Selkirk wrestling num-
bers went down, from 12 athletes in the program last year to only six this year. Overall projection of team’s chances in the 1B Northeast League: Saxe’s projections for his team are a bit hesitant, based on the low enrollment in this year’s program. “Numbers are down, so we’ll see how we do,” he said. “The wrestlers are working hard to stay in shape and keep their weight down.”
